The resurgence for international ETFs comes as investors were not shy about pulling money from exchange traded products last month. August was the worst month for ETF outflows <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/markets/bonds/13/09/3883177/after-stellar-july-etfs-shed-15-billion-in-august">since early 2010</a>. However, the outflows data reveal an important point: That the bulk of the outflows, $13.8 billion to be precise, were attributable to the SPDR S&amp;P 500 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/spy#NYSE">SPY</a>).

Said differently, investors pulled money from U.S. stocks. ECON, the firm's largest ETF, is a big reason why.

No single holding can represent more than 10 percent of AADR's weight and sector exposure is capped at 45 percent while the fund limits total emerging markets exposure to 35 percent. Most of the fund's current developing world exposure goes to low beta Taiwan and Chinese technology names, which have <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/13/07/3767598/leave-the-banks-take-this-china-etf">been stellar performers this year</a>.

As Global Stocks Rally, Don't Forget These ETFs

The world of investing is littered with acronyms. Two of the most prominent are ETFs for "exchanged-traded funds" and ADR for "American depositary receipts" -- or shares of foreign companies that are listed on a U.S. exchange.

Leave it to savvy ETF sponsors to marry those acronyms: There are some ETFs on the market today that explicitly focus on ADRs. While some of these funds are often overshadowed by more traditional developed and emerging markets ETFs, some merit consideration for investors looking for international exposure.

With that, here are three ADR ETFs your broker probably forgot to tell you about:

AdvisorShares WCM/BNY Mellon Focused Growth ADR ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aadr#NYSE">AADR</a>)
As its name implies, the WCM/BNY Mellon Focused Growth ADR ETF seeks to deliver returns in excess of the BNY Mellon Classic ADR Index, but this actively managed ETF also looks to beat the MSCI EAFE Index.

The management team behind AADR looks to accomplish index-beating returns through several interesting factors. For starters, AADR is a highly concentrated ETF, meaning it generally holds just 20 to 30 stocks (currently about 30). However, that does not mean the fund is excessively weighted to a small number of its holdings. For example, Taiwan Semiconductor is AADR's largest constituent with a weight of 5.57 percent.

AADR focuses mainly on the consumer staples, discretionary, health care and technology sectors with a bias towards those companies that have wide moats, highly recognizable brands and a reputation for sound management. In addition to Taiwan Semiconductor, other top holdings include Core Laboratories (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/clb#NYSE">CLB</a>), Potash Corp. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pot#NYSE">POT</a>) and Lazard (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/laz#NYSE">LAZ</a>).

Critics have some ammunition with AADR. As an actively managed fund, its 1.25 percent expense ratio is high in the ETF world. Additionally, the fund is small by assets under management and thinly traded. Focusing on those factors means ignoring the fact that AADR has surged 34.5 percent since its July 2010 debut, a performance that easily tops that of the iShares MSCI EAFE Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/efa#NYSE">EFA</a>). 

BLDRS Developed Markets 100 ADR Index Fund (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/adrd#NASDAQ">ADRD</a>)
The BLDRS Developed Markets 100 ADR Index Fund, issued by PowerShares, focuses on developed market stocks, in this case nearly 100 of them, and is concentrated in its own right. In the case of ADRD, it is heavily concentrated at the country level where the U.K. and Japan combine for over 52 percent of the ETF's weight. Switzerland is the third-largest country exposure at 9.24 percent.

On the upside, ADRD features no exposure to Italy or Greece, and Spain accounts for just 4.71 percent of the total country weight. Financials are by far the largest sector weight in ADRD at over 24 percent. Health care is next at almost 16 percent and three European pharmaceuticals giants –- Novartis (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/nvs#NYSE">NVS</a>), GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/gsk#NYSE">GSK</a>) and Sanofi (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sny#NYSE">SNY</a>) –- are found among the ETF's top-10 holdings.

Other top-10 holdings include HSBC (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hbc#NYSE">HBC</a>), BP (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bp#NYSE">BP</a>) and Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-A). Like AADR, ADRD is small given its age (just $46.4 million in assets since a November 2002 debut). Not surprisingly, ADRD's Europe exposure has been problematic as the fund is off 6.74 percent over the past two years. In the ETF's favor are a trailing 12-month dividend yield of 3.3 percent and a favorable valuation, including a price-to-book ratio of just 1.35, <a href="http://www.invescopowershares.com/products/overview.aspx?ticker=ADRD">according to PowerShares data</a>.

Guggenheim BRIC ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/eeb#NYSE">EEB</a>)
Advertising a focus on the BRIC quartet, EEB is home to some of the most familiar emerging markets stocks that trade in the U.S. such as China Mobile (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/chl#NYSE">CHL</a>), Vale (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vale#NYSE">VALE</a>), Petrobras (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pbr#NYSE">PBR</a>) and Cnooc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ceo#NYSE">CEO</a>). That probably is not a good thing at the moment given the <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/13/03/3391403/good-news-emerging-markets-etfs-are-cheap">various headwinds facing Brazilian, Chinese and Indian equities</a>.

That is a good segue to the next point about EEB. This is not a criticism, but investors should note just how much BRIC they get with this ETF. Not much in terms of India and Russia, which combine for less than 12 percent of the ETF's weight. EEB is dominated by Brazil, which accounts for over 50 percent of the fund's weight. Six Brazilian issues are found among EEB's top-10 holdings.

It is EEB's Brazilian exposure that explains why the fund is off 3.51 percent in the past month. Additionally, this is a volatile ETF. EEB's allocates almost 44 percent of its weight to energy and bank stocks, giving it a beta of 1.07. EEB's standard deviation of 24.16 percent is more than 200 basis points higher than that of the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, <a href="http://guggenheiminvestments.com/products/etf/eeb">according to Guggenheim data</a>.

That may sound like bad news for the moment, but EEB offers utility to investors. In the event of a Brazil rebound, EEB could prove to be a conservative alternative to an all-in bet on a Brazilian stock or ETF focused solely on that country.

The concept of actively managed ETFs is nothing if not interesting, though it's probably inaccurate to say the idea is one that investors have swooned over. 
Yet, the actively managed space is where new entrants into the ETF arena typically head. Just look at the plans to get into the ETF game announced by the likes of Legg Mason (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/lm#NYSE">LM</a>), T. Rowe Price (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/trow#Nasdaq">TROW</a>) and others in the past year: They focus on the actively managed space. 
In other words, expect the number of actively managed ETFs to continue growing, but in that process, don't forget about interesting fund that has been around for just a few months: The WCM/BNY Mellon Focused Growth ADR ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aadr#NYSE">AADR</a>).
In its favor, AADR is home to familiar ADRs such as Baidu (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bidu#Nasdaq">BIDU</a>), Teva Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/teva#Nasdaq">TEVA</a>) and Nestle (PK: NSRGY), meaning the fund is diverse in terms of geography and sector exposure.
On the other hand, and this is a problem faced by many actively managed ETFs, volume is terrible. How bad? Well, its 12:45 EST right now and AADR shows no trades for today.
An expense ratio of 1.25% is also problematic, another issue facing plenty of actively managed ETFs.
The idea behind AADR is a solid one, but until fees come down and volume increases, AADR, like so many other actively managed ETFs is best left to watch from afar.

AdvisorShares Withdraws Application For Emerald Rock Active ETFs (LOWP, DIVI, GRV, AADR)

With the closure of two Grail ETFs this week, I am reminded of how differently ETF and Mutual Funds are viewed within our own industry. Earlier this year, we heard comments from Greg Johnson of Franklin Templeton Funds. He stated his firm had no plans to “paint by numbers” and instead his firm wants to “produce art by way of active management”. It reminded me of the same conference last year on a panel with Mellody Hobson and Matt Fink, who when asked about "actively managed ETFs", one of them responded "isn't that an oxymoron?” 
These snipes remind me of the "I am a Mac" and the "I am a PC" commercials. At their core, they are both computers, they are serving the same type of client with basically the same types of goals. Not counting the marketing around them, people basically pick the computer that works best for them and for some they actually use both for very specific reasons. 
ETFs are (legally) mutual funds (not the ETPs, or ETNs). However they are not marketed as “mutual funds” to avoid confusion, but the difference is solely designed to ensure that investors know ETFs have daily transparency and intra-day liquidity and mutual funds are not as transparent and only offer liquidity at the end of the day. Unfortunately for ETFs, the SEC only allowed them to be offered in an index-based format, so as people learned about them, the term ETF became synonymous with passive investment, but the term ETF has nothing to do with investment style, and of course now, thankfully the SEC is allowing more investment styles in this unique structure.
It will be interesting to see if the industry continues to position them as “competitors”. It does seem unusual, as the traditional mutual fund market place has been very comfortable with share class structures where each has their own unique features (no-load, A-Shares, C-Shares). It does seem with so many large firms in line to obtain their approval from the SEC to offer ETFs (Russell, Hancock, JP Morgan, T Rowe, and Eaton Vance), if they follow through with their plans, investors will benefit from a large educational push to ensure investors know the differences and select the right option for their own needs.

80% of S&amp;P 500 companies are <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-11/s-p-500-is-heading-for-a-rough-patch-as-buyback-blackouts-arrive">entering pre-earnings buyback blackouts</a>, according to Bloomberg. Analysts anticipate a potential rebound post-blackout. Historically, corporate buybacks have bolstered stock prices, and their temporary suspension, noted by Deutsche Bank, could lead to increased market volatility until early May. This backdrop has led to this list of Buyback ETFs to consider.



Additionally, this period might also witness a rotation into sectors that investors believe will benefit most during an upturn, Bloomberg noted, with recent breakouts in economically sensitive industries like semiconductors, homebuilders, and transportation.



I think that now could be a good time to put these buyback ETFs on one&rsquo;s watchlist. I feel that these ETFs could then be in an undervalued spot right now, given people&rsquo;s attention is either towards growth assets or holding off due to fears of shares and ETF units as being overpriced.



So with that being said, here are seven buyback ETFs for investors to consider scooping up for April.



<h2>Buyback ETFs: Invesco BuyBack Achievers ETF (PKW)</h2>

This ETF has <a href="https://stockanalysis.com/etf/pkw/">shown significant long-term outperformance</a> compared to broader market indices, gaining 62.89% over the past five years. It has an expense ratio of 0.62%.



The overall strategy of PKW is to boost one&rsquo;s exposure to companies improving their EPS. This is a common theme among the other buyback ETFs, as this is a signal that their shares could be potentially undervalued.



The ETF includes several significant holdings. T-Mobile (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/tmus-stock-quote/">TMUS</a>) is one of the largest holdings, representing 4.72% of the ETF&rsquo;s composition. Following closely is Booking Holdings (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/bkng-stock-quote/">BKNG</a>), which accounts for 4.52% of the fund. Johnson &amp; Johnson (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/jnj-stock-quote/">JNJ</a>) also plays a substantial role in the ETF with a 4.45% share. Comcast (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/cmcsa-stock-quote/">CMCSA</a>) makes up 4.25% of the portfolio, and Lockheed Martin (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/lmt-stock-quote/">LMT</a>) rounds out the top five with a 4.10% contribution.



<h2>iShares U.S. Dividend and Buyback ETF (DIVB)</h2>

This dual approach helps investors improve capital appreciation as well as income, thus it may be suitable for those with a long time horizon to get the most out of it.



DIVB, as of now, <a href="https://stockanalysis.com/etf/divb/">manages assets worth $338.30 million</a> with a very low expense ratio of 0.05%. It boasts a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 16.17 and offers a dividend yield of 2.91% on a dividend of $1.24. Over the past year, the ETF has seen a return of 13.98%. The fund currently holds 410 different assets.



The portfolio includes notable holdings such as Broadcom (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/avgo-stock-quote/">AVGO</a>), which represents 4.90% of the ETF. It is followed closely by Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/csco-stock-quote/">CSCO</a>), accounting for 4.77%. Qualcomm (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/qcom-stock-quote/">QCOM</a>) and Texas Instruments (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/txn-stock-quote/">TXN</a>) hold smaller percentages, contributing 2.88% and 2.87%, respectively.&nbsp;



<h2>Buyback ETFs: Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD)</h2>

SCHD is one of my favorite dividend and buyback ETFs. The reason being is that it has a great capital return record over the past five years, growing over 40%.



SCHD is a rules-based ETF. Primarily, it focuses on companies that have consistently paid dividends for at least 10 consecutive years. Beyond this, the ETF evaluates firms based on financial health and profitability measures such as return on equity, dividend yield, and dividend growth rate.



SCHD, launched on Oct. 20, 2011, <a href="https://stockanalysis.com/etf/schd/dividend/">controls substantial assets</a> amounting to $54.46 billion, with a low expense ratio of 0.06%. It offers a dividend yield of 3.48% from a total dividend of $2.67, reflecting a payout ratio of 50.69%.



SCHD includes Chevron Corporation (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/cvx-stock-quote/">CVX</a>), which constitutes 4.16% of its portfolio. Following Chevron, TXN makes up 4.11% of the fund. LMT is also a significant holding, accounting for 4.10% of the ETF&rsquo;s total assets.



<h2>AdvisorShares Dorsey Wright ADR ETF (AADR)</h2>

The ETF, launched on July 20, 2010, <a href="https://stockanalysis.com/etf/aadr/">has accumulated assets</a> totaling $26.41 million and holds 39 different investments. It has a high expense ratio of 1.10% and a P/E ratio of 14.45. The fund has demonstrated significant growth with a 1-year return of 27.01%. It offers a modest dividend yield of 0.71%.



AADR could be one way that investors can diversify their portfolios further through investing in a mix of emerging developed markets outside of the U.S. It gives investors exposure to industries that range from energy in Argentina to financials in Japan with a stake in its largest bank.



The ETF&rsquo;s portfolio includes Novo Nordisk (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nvo-stock-quote/">NVO</a>) with a significant representation of 6.40%. YPF S.A. (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/ypf-stock-quote/">YPF</a>), another major holding, accounts for 4.70% of the fund. New Oriental Education &amp; Technology (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/edu-stock-quote/">EDU</a>) also plays a substantial role, comprising 4.09% of the assets. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/mufg-stock-quote/">MUFG</a>) rounds out the notable entries with a 3.36% stake in the ETF.&nbsp;



<h2>Buyback ETFs: First Trust BuyWrite Income ETF (FTHI)</h2>

This helps to produce income, but the downside is that this comes at the expense of capital appreciation potential, which is par the course for covered call ETFs.



This ETF, established on Jan. 6, 2014, <a href="https://stockanalysis.com/etf/fthi/">manages assets totaling</a> $573.03 million and has issued 25.42 million shares. It features a relatively high expense ratio of 0.75% and a P/E ratio of 18.59. Notably, it offers a substantial dividend yield of 8.39.



FTHI is heavy with <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/technology/">tech stocks</a> as part of its composition. The ETF includes Microsoft (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/msft-stock-quote/">MSFT</a>) as its largest holding, comprising 7.35% of its portfolio. NVIDIA (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nvda-stock-quote/">NVDA</a>) also forms a significant part of the fund, accounting for 4.60%. Apple (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/aapl-stock-quote/">AAPL</a>) is another major component, representing 4.40% of the ETF.



<h2>Global X SuperDividend U.S. ETF (DIV)</h2>

This ETF seeks to invest in 50 of the highest dividend yielding equity securities in the U.S.



DIV has <a href="https://stockanalysis.com/etf/div/">assets totaling $606.94 million</a> and 35.76 million shares outstanding. It carries a relatively low expense ratio of 0.45% and features a P/E ratio of 9.11. The fund provides a dividend yield of 7.18% with an annual dividend of $1.21, reflecting a payout ratio of 65.45%.



It&rsquo;s clear that DIV is suitable for income investors due to its high dividend yield. However, it should be noted that the dividend is more or less all that one can expect from DIV, as the ETF&rsquo;s share price has dropped 28.66% over the past five years.&nbsp;



The ETF includes Berry Corporation (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/bry-stock-quote/">BRY</a>), which accounts for 2.49% of its portfolio. Virtu Financial (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/virt-stock-quote/">VIRT</a>) also forms a significant part of the fund, comprising 2.36%. Chord Energy (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/chrd-stock-quote/">CHRD</a>) rounds out this selection with a 2.26%.



<h2>Invesco International BuyBack Achievers ETF (IPKW)</h2>

The fund provides a dividend yield of 2.44% with an annual dividend of 96 cents, corresponding to a payout ratio of 23.88%.&nbsp;



The strategy of the ETF seems to work well, having gained 19.54% over the past five years. However, this is substantially below the total returns of both the S&amp;P 500 as well as the Nasdaq.



I think that the time will come when ETFs like IPKW will become outperformers. This could be through a result of overvalued U.S. equities, or when developed and developing economies overseas begin to hit an inflection point where their growth rates far exceed what can be found on U.S. soil.
