Gains in some heavy-weighted tech stocks lifted the Nasdaq to a higher close, as it snapped a two-session losing streak, while the S&amp;P 500 Index finished with a modest loss. The 30-stock Dow Jones Industrial Average and the small-cap Russell 2,000 Index settled moderately lower.
Eight of the 11 S&amp;P 500 sectors finished in the red, with industrial, material healthcare and financial stocks seeing marked weakness. On the other hand, consumer discretionary, communication services and IT stocks found some buying interest.

Insights From Analysts:
After August proved to be a wild month for stocks, September has so far lived up to expectations of being a seasonally weak month, and an analyst cautioned that the near term does not hold out much promise. LPL Financial Chief Technical Strategist Adam Turnquist said the S&amp;P 500&#8217;s recovery has stalled just under its record highs hit in mid-July. 
The index stalled just around its 20- and 50-day simple moving averages. Turnquist noted that there is a price gap at 5,455 and further down, it has support around its August low of 5,119. In the event of a rally August and July highs of 5,648 and 5,667, respectively, will serve as resistances, he added.

&#8220;Momentum indicators have turned bearish, and signs of defensive leadership have begun to emerge, pointing to more volatility ahead,&#8221; Turnquist said, adding that &#8220;breakdowns in longer-duration Treasury yields, crude oil, and copper, along with a simultaneous breakout in gold, provide a warning sign of rising risks to an economic soft landing.&#8221;

Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GIII#NASDAQ">GIII</a>) jumped 22% during Thursday&#8217;s session after the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter adjusted EPS results and issued its FY25 guidance above estimates.
On the economic data front, U.S. private businesses added 99,000 workers to their payrolls in August compared to a revised 111,000 gain in July and versus market estimates of 145,000. U.S. initial jobless claims fell by 5,000 from the prior week to 227,000 in the week ending August 31, compared to market estimates of 230,000.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with healthcare, industrials, and financials stocks recording the biggest losses on Thursday. However, communication services and consumer discretionary stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones closed lower by around 219 points to 40,755.75 on Thursday. The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.30% to 5,503.41, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.25% at 17,127.66 during Thursday's session.

McKesson&nbsp;(NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/mck#NYSE">MCK</a>) is witnessing strong momentum, with its shares having rallied 18.3% year to date compared with 0.6% growth of the&nbsp;industry. The S&amp;P 500 Composite has risen 16.5% during the same time frame.

The rally in MCK&#39;s shares can be attributed to the strength of its robust U.S. Pharmaceutical business. This optimism, led by a solid first-quarter performance and increasing demand for healthcare, is expected to contribute further.

Revenues are expected to grow 15-17% from the prior-year figure.
The company recorded a significant uptick in its overall top line during the first quarter. This growth was primarily driven by the U.S. Pharmaceutical segment, which saw increased prescription volumes, including higher volumes from specialty products, retail national account customers and GLP-1 medications.
As a result of the major market disruption caused by COVID-19 during the past three years, McKesson has benefited from improved demand across numerous verticals within the medical sector, particularly surgeries. A rebound in demand-driven volumes is also being observed by the company. Sales are also being positively impacted by increasing product pricing.
In April, McKesson launched Project Oasis, an initiative aimed at advancing health equity for at-risk populations in underserved communities. The rising demand for extended and primary care is expected to drive the top line of the Medical-Surgical business in fiscal 2025.
However, a weak first-quarter Medical-Surgical business due to challenges in the primary care channel raises concerns.
