Canalys Sees Mac Shipments Growing BY 14.4% In Q3 Before New Launches

There seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel for the PC market, as it continues its lean run in the recently concluded second quarter. The PC market has been on a secular decline for five years now, and the second quarter marked the eleventh straight quarter PC shipments fell year over year.
<h3>2Q Statistics</h3>
Estimates by Gartner as well as IDC underlined the underlying weakness in the PC market. The <a href="https://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3759964"> former </a> estimates that worldwide PC shipments fell 4.3 percent to 61.1 million units, while the <a href="https://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS42882717"> latter </a> forecast a 3.3-percent drop to 60.5 million units.
The difference between IDC and Gartner numbers is accounted for the form factor each counts as PCs.
<h3>What Is Ailing The Sector</h3>
IDC feels inventory build-up caused by shortages of key components such as solid state drives as one of the reasons for the weakness in the past several quarters. Though the second quarter of 2017 was less impacted by the shortages, increased cost of components hurt final sales value of systems, dragging down PC sales.
Gartner sang the same tune, tracing the weakness back to higher PC prices due to the impact of component <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/17/07/9766252/encouraging-signs-for-semiconductor-etfs"> shortages </a> of DRAM, SSD and LCD panels.
Sleek smartphones and tempting tablets have lured customers away from PCs, which they find to be anachronistic devices. The former two gadgets have now so much evolved that they offer all the functionalities of PCs, along with convenience of use and mobility only they can offer.
With consumers, PCs having almost become an obsolete product, commercial customers continue to patronize it, as they go for product upgrades and refreshes, triggering demand for PCs. 
However, one avenue of growth for the ailing device could be the demand for gaming hardware devices, which could prop up PC sales. 
<h3>PC Market Shipments Over The Years</h3>
After peaking at around 365.4 million units in 2011, PC shipments declined 4 percent to 351.1 million units in 2012, falling a steeper 10 percent in 2013 to 316.5 million units. After the decline tempered to 1 percent in 2014, shipments fell 8 percent and 6 percent, respectively in 2015 and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/17/01/8898762/study-pcs-no-longer-a-preferred-gift-item-as-2016-shipme"> 2016. </a>

<h3>Vendorwise Performance</h3>
 HP Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hpq#NYSE">HPQ</a>) has weathered the half-a-decade PC market downturn relatively better than it peers. IDC's 2Q17 estimates showed that the company retained the distinction of the top PC vendor for the second straight quarter, boasting of a 23-percent market share. 
Meanwhile, Gartner's research indicated that HP wrested the top slot from Lenovo Group Limited (ADR) (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/lnvgy#OTC">LNVGY</a>), which has become a force to reckon with in the PC market after it bought International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ibm#NYSE">IBM</a>)'s PC business in 2005. HP fared particularly well in the U.S., where it outperformed the regional market. 
Lenovo has remained the leader since 2013, with HP trailing behind it.

Dell Inc. has been become both Lenovo and HP. Meanwhile, Asus and Acer Inc (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aceyy#OTC">ACEYY</a>) has been running neck-on-neck, closely following Dell.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), despite its visually appealing Mac PCs, was clubbed under the "others" category until 2013. Apple shipped 19.6 million units of Mac in 2014, with shipments rising to 20.83 million units in 2015. However, shipments fell to 18.61 million units in 2016.

The PC market cannot be obliterated completely, as commercial customers still rely on them. That said, consumer PC sales are definitely on the wane. It remains to be seen how the industry stands up to multiple challenges before it.

PC Market Downturn Continues Into Its Sixth Year

Gazing into the future of operating system, or OS, Loup Ventures said a combination of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/msft#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) is likely to win the Augmented Reality, or AR OS race. The firm noted that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/17/02/9033181/goldman-sachs-sees-increassed-likelihood-the-iphone-8-wil"> Apple </a> and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/goog#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/googl#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>), the prior OS winners won the mobile layer.
<h3>Opportunities For New Players</h3>
Gene Munster, managing partner at the firm, attributed this to the well-defined shifts and the existing players carefully positioning themselves to be sure they have a seat at the table. Munster feels the future won't be owned by the incumbents, as there is a move away from purely digital technologies into ones that combine the sciences, namely biology, chemistry, psychology. This, the analyst, sees would provide opportunities for the emergence of new players.
<h3> New Computer Paradigms Keep Emerging </h3>
Loup Ventures noted that once in every 25 years a new computing paradigm keeps emerging, creating an opportunity to own a new OS layer &mdash; like the PC in the late '80s powered by Windows, Mac and Linux, the internet in the late '90s powered by <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-01-04/google-moves-into-augmented-reality-shopping-with-bmw-gap"> Google </a> and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/amzn#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), mobile in the mid-2000s, owned by iOS and Android.
<h3>Sharing Knowledge On AR OS Layer</h3>
Although Munster believes most AR functionality will happen through the existing mobile OSes, he thinks in order to drive a true paradigm shift, AR wearables will need their own OS. The analyst is of the view that there are likely to be two or three winners on that count, which would render reach and scale difficult to achieve. There is likely to be one closed OS solution and one that is open, Munster added.
The leeway open systems allow for third-party developers to innovate on hardware and software features would make hardware commoditized. Munster sees definite challenges around miniaturization and battery. The analyst expects AR to be a culmination of several core disciplines such as UX design, maps, data, social, developers, content and payments.
On these core disciplines, Munster noted that Google scored the highest followed by Apple, Microsoft, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fb#NASDAQ">FB</a>), Amazon and Snap Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/snap#NYSE">SNAP</a>). Also taking the R&amp;D spending of these companies as proxies for their determination to make it big, Munster noted that Apple is spending the most followed by Google and Facebook.
<h3> AR OS Players And Their Status </h3>
<ul>
<li>Google: Discontinued Google Glass; Tango already has takers in the form of Lenovo Group Limited (ADR) (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/lnvgy#OTC">LNVGY</a>)'s Phab 2 Pro and ACER INC GDR(REP 5 ORD TWD10)REG'S (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aceyy#OTC">ACEYY</a>)'s Tango-ready phone. Google's AR OS is likely to be the winner for the open system, developing from a combination of Tango and Android, augmented by the company's machine learning efforts.</li>
<li>Apple: If the next iPhone integrated a dedicated 3D mapping chip, it could be the first AR hardware to gain mass adoption, enabling developers to create unique AR experiences on the iPhone. Additionally, Loup Ventures expects <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/17/02/9033267/munster-apple-is-taking-baby-steps-into-augmented-realit"> Apple </a> to show off the capabilities of the chip with help from Prime Sense and Metaio, its most recent AR software acquisitions.</li>
<li>Microsoft: Munster feels the company may be the furthest along in AR today, with the Hololens and its Windows Holographic OS. Given that the company had missed the bus in mobile OS despite being an early entrant, the company might be determined not to miss on AR. However, the company would be constrained by its inability to match up to Google in most of the core competences to win in AR, although it still holds an edge in productivity.</li>
<li>Facebook: Loup Ventures believes Facebook is experimenting with both AR and Virtual Reality, or VR, with the focus more on VR than AR. This is understandable, given Mark Zuckerberg's view that VR is five to 10 years ahead of AR. The company's relative weakness in maps and informational data and strength in social and content make it a potential winner in the VR OS layer.</li>
<li>Amazon: Amazon's foray into AR is not through wearables, but Alexa, an open OS. Munster sees Alexa-powered devices to eventually include cameras that will enable computer vision. The analyst feels the company might want to stamp its authority as a force in the OS layer for commerce.</li>
<li>Snap: Munster believes for Snap, communication is a key use for AR, with its camera and Spectacles. However, the analyst doesn't think Snap can win the AR race, as it can't offer incremental features beyond social to developers.</li>
