High inflation and jittery consumer sentiment, spooked by erratic trade policies, pulled down U.S. same-store sales by 0.5% on-year in the first quarter — a surprise miss against expectations.
Yet, all is not burnt crust and bad news. Domino&#8217;s surpassed earnings estimates with an EPS of $4.33, compared to $3.58 in the same quarter last year.
Smart tech investments by Domino&#8217;s, such as AI-based order preparation and their AnyWare platform, are likely to keep holding investor faith. On top of that, its new agreement with DoorDash (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DASH#NASDAQ">DASH</a>), which is launching nationwide in May, Domino&#8217;s has laid the groundwork for a possible comeback in the second half of the year.
This resiliency might make <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">ETFs holding restaurant stocks</a> an excellent opportunity for investors seeking to ride out economic volatility. Funds exposed to names such as Domino&#8217;s, McDonald&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MCD#NYSE">MCD</a>), and Chipotle (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMG#NYSE">CMG</a>)—all firms focusing on tech development and value-for-money strategies—may provide a defensive yet lively play.

Domino's Pizza Earnings Miss: 3 ETFs That Could Still Deliver Tasty Returns In 2025

We've been getting&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/economic-data-earnings-results-ambiguous">ambiguous signals in the economic data</a>.
On one hand, the soft, sentiment-oriented data has been disappointing. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sca.isr.umich.edu/">University of Michigan</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.conference-board.org/topics/consumer-confidence">Conference Board's</a>&nbsp;surveys of consumer confidence have turned sharply lower in recent months. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nfib.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/NFIB-SBET-Report-March-2025.pdf">NFIB's Small Business Optimism index</a>&nbsp;has tanked. Sentiment among&nbsp;<a href="https://www.apolloacademy.com/corporate-confidence-declining/">CEOs and CFOs</a>&nbsp;has turned south. Purchasing managers at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ismworld.org/globalassets/pub/research-and-surveys/rob/pmi/t4rf202503pmi.pdf">manufacturing</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ismworld.org/globalassets/pub/research-and-surveys/rob/nmi/5tagrob202503svcs.pdf">services</a>&nbsp;firms have also become increasingly cautious. And it's all because of the Trump administration's volatile position on tariffs — which most people&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/wall-street-brief-explanation-tariffs">agree are net negative for the economy</a>.
On the other hand, the hard data, which reflects actual activity, has been strong. <a href="https://www.tker.co/i/161227758/review-of-the-macro-crosscurrents">Retail sales</a> hit a record high in March, and weekly card spending data suggest that strength has continued into April. Durable goods orders and shipments continue at elevated levels. Meanwhile, key labor market metrics including job creation, unemployment, and claims for unemployment insurance continue to trend at levels associated with economic expansion.
This narrative of contradictions is illustrated nicely in this chart from Goldman Sachs, which shows how soft data has been surprising to the downside while hard data has been surprising to the upside. In other words, sentiment has been weaker than expected while realized activity has been stronger than expected.

Renaissance Macro's Neil Dutta wrote about these "data discontinuities" in his April 21 note.
"It's probable that much of the recent upside surprises in hard data reflect pulling forward activity in the anticipation of tariffs," Dutta wrote. "Consumers pulled forward auto sales and consumption on other household durables, as an example. Firms likely pulled forward some orders too. That likely gives the veneer of strength in the recent high-frequency dataflow."
During much of the economic expansion that began in 2020, it's paid off to focus on what&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/october-retail-sales-strong-sentiment-inflation">consumers</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/weekly-macro-soft-vs-hard-data">businesses</a>&nbsp;did (i.e., the hard data) over what they said (i.e., the soft data). The Federal Reserve&nbsp;<a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/notes/feds-notes/tracking-consumer-sentiment-versus-how-consumers-are-doing-based-on-verified-retail-purchases-20250424.html">just published research</a>&nbsp;explaining this phenomenon.
But in a world where many are&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/sales-pull-forward-frontrunning-tariffs">aware of the inflationary risks of new tariffs</a>, this&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/economic-data-earnings-results-ambiguous">pull-forward of sales</a>&nbsp;comes with two issues: 1) it masks what may be a much&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/hot-economic-charts-that-cooled">weaker underlying economy</a>, and 2) we could get&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/i/158036475/brace-for-payback">depressed sales in the future</a>&nbsp;when these pulled-forward sales would've normally occurred.
"[R]ecent hard data in the U.S., mostly for March, are overstating activity and it's worth noting that conditions were not especially strong to begin with," Dutta added. "The collapse across a range of survey-based measures of activity suggest that actual activity will continue to slowdown, in a potentially abrupt manner. Recession may already be here."
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The big picture &#x1f5bc;&#xFE0F;</h2>
We'll only know with the benefit of hindsight whether or not we're in a recession or going into a recession.
However, we know that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/hot-economic-charts-that-cooled">the economy had been cooling</a>&nbsp;and that the threat of tariffs&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/stock-market-history-with-recessions">increased the risk of recession</a>.
Importantly, as long term investors, we should understand that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/stock-market-history-with-recessions">recessions</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/bear-markets-in-context">market downturns</a>&nbsp;will happen as you build wealth with stocks.
The economy has been in expansion&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/i/135828032/most-actual-news-about-the-economy-and-the-stock-market-isnt-bad">about 80% of the time</a>. Similarly, stocks have been in a bull market&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/i/135828032/most-actual-news-about-the-economy-and-the-stock-market-isnt-bad">about 80% of the time</a>. Maybe we're currently going through an unpleasant period that has historically occurred about 20% of the time.

Ambiguous Signals In Economic Data

On Friday, AbbVie Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ABBV#NYSE">ABBV</a>) reported an adjusted EPS of $2.46, up 6.5% year over year and beating the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $2.38</a>.
The pharmaceutical giant reported sales of $13.34 billion, up 8.4% on a reported basis (+9.8% on an operational basis), beating the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/45011116/abbvie-q1-earnings-come-ahead-of-expectations-ceo-says-well-positioned-for-long-term" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $12.92 billion</a>.
It reported adjusted earnings per share of $2.46, beating the street view of $2.38.
BMO Capital Markets writes that every quarter seems to tell the same story. Analysts think they&#8217;ve accurately factored in Skyrizi and Rinvoq&#8217;s growth, only for AbbVie to outperform expectations once again.

Seigerman writes that AbbVie appears well-positioned to manage through Humira&#8217;s U.S. patent loss. With the acquisition of ImmunoGen and Cerevel, AbbVie is well-positioned to capitalize on Elahere&#8217;s growth and key readouts for emeraldine/tavapadon.
Vyalev was a minor contributor to AbbVie&#8217;s overall beat, but BMO Capital writes that investors may be underappreciating its growth and upside. With Medicare reimbursement not yet in place, the analyst sees more upside to analyst estimates over the coming quarters. Advancements with Vyalev appear to pair well with Cerevel&#8217;s tavapadon, which could also be commercialized in 2026, meaningfully expanding the company&#8217;s Parkinson&#8217;s portfolio.
Vyalev is&nbsp;a prescription medication used to treat motor fluctuations in adults with advanced Parkinson&#8217;s disease.

Music operating income increased by 28%&nbsp;to ¥97.4 billion. Pictures operating income declined by 18% to ¥34.0 billion. Entertainment, Technology, &amp; Services operating income remained flat at ¥77.1 billion.&nbsp;Imaging &amp; Sensing Solutions operating income declined 2%&nbsp;to ¥97.5 billion. Financial Services operating income decreased by 40% to ¥46.4 billion.
Sony expects fiscal 2024 sales of $88.00 billion or ¥13.20 trillion versus&nbsp;the&nbsp;$81.59 billion consensus.&nbsp;
Recently, Intel Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INTC#NASDAQ">INTC</a>) announced a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/price-target/25/04/44828811/intel-growth-challenges-are-not-over-despite-altera-stake-sale-analyst" rel="noreferrer noopener">51% stake sale</a>&nbsp;of its programmable chip business, Altera, to private equity firm Silver Lake Management for $4.46 billion, valuing Altera at $8.75 billion. Intel originally acquired Altera for $16.7 billion in December 2015.

What's Pushing Sony To Consider A Semiconductor Spinoff?

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) shares are trading lower Monday. Oppenheimer analyst Jason Helfstein maintained an Outperform rating on Amazon but lowered the price target from $260 to $220.
What To Know: Helfstein reduced estimates ahead of the company&#8217;s upcoming earnings report, citing uncertainty around the impact of tariffs on the e-commerce industry.
He believes third-quarter results will be hit the hardest, as Amazon sellers still have inventory purchased before tariffs took effect.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told CNBC some sellers are buying inventory ahead of time, with consumers also making purchases before expected price increases. Sellers are likely to pass higher tariff costs onto consumers, although no major shifts in behavior have been seen yet.
Helfstein lowered overall revenue estimates by 2% for fiscal-year 2025 and 1% for fiscal-year 2026, matching the reductions to North America forecasts. He also cut international revenue projections by 2% and Amazon Web Services revenue by 1%.
The analyst also cut EBIT estimates, expecting total EBIT to fall 19% in fiscal-year 2025 and 14% in fiscal-year 2026. North America EBIT is projected to drop 49% in 2025 and 35% in 2026, while International EBIT and Amazon Web Services EBIT are expected to decline 2% and 1%, respectively.

Oppenheimer's Helfstein Cuts Amazon Price Target To $220 On Tariff Concerns

There's little doubt the tariff wars have taken a toll on Americans' investment portfolios. And with the markets still in disrepair, nobody knows when stocks will stabilize.
"The situation is volatile, to say the least," said Doug Carey, a financial advisor at WealthTrace, a retirement planning consumer software company. "President Trump has the final word on how much tariffs will cost because he is using emergency powers, citing the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), passed in 1977. These moves may be struck down in court, but for now, he can use them."
To peg a reasonable timeframe, Benzinga reached out to select market experts for their views on a permanent "ceasefire" in the tariff wars, which could help calm anxious investors and encourage them to return to the market.
Here's what they had to say on when the markets will come back to sanity.
Doug Carey: There will likely be several signs that the market is set to rebound after the tariff issue is settled &#8211; or at least stabilized. "Look for the stock market to rise substantially and for the dollar to strengthen," Carey said. "Gold, which has increased over 25% this year due to the fear of a larger trade war, will do poorly if the tariff drama ends."
Carey said technology stocks were hurt the most by the fear of a trade war. "For those who believe that there will be an end to this drama soon, the tech sector is a good place to invest," he added.
Javier Palomarez, founder &amp; CEO of the United States Hispanic Business Council: "The clearest signal would be a statement from the Trump Administration that the tariffs are being walked away from, as a result of negotiations or whatever the case may be," Palomarez said. "However, it's worth noting that declining stocks also represent robust opportunities. Ideally, one would purchase their investments just before such a statement."

"We're looking at a definitive resolution or rollback of tariffs; sustained rallies in equity markets, drops in the VIX volatility index, especially in sectors previously affected by tariffs; and overall improvements in global trade volumes, manufacturing indices, and corporate earnings," he said.
Investors should simultaneously evaluate asset allocations to achieve alignment with their long-term financial goals, considering a diversified mix of equities, bonds and other assets.​ "Then, as a general rule, prioritize investments in companies with strong balance sheets and consistent earnings," Zhen advised.
Jeff Weniger, head of equity strategy at the asset management firm Wisdom Tree: Weniger suspects the tariff issue is at the stage where the most aggressive bargaining chips are being methodically pulled off the table. "For example, India and Japan are priced at 84% and 77% probabilities, respectively, of coming to a trade deal with the Trump administration by July," he said. "Though other countries' probabilities are priced lower (China is 42%), this is a far cry from some of the intense pessimism that was being priced in earlier this summer."
For now, though, the worst of the drama is likely over. "The peak risk in markets was the 145% tariff on China, with similar reciprocity," Weniger added. "Those figures have been coming down for a few weeks, as has the tone of commentary from both the White House and Beijing."
Wenger also advised investors to keep an eye on volatility gauges such as the VIX index. "That index headed north of 60 on April 7th, a level of fear akin to readings that registered right after 9/11 and amid the bank and insurance company failures of late 2008," he added. "Fear levels on that order often precipitate heady gains in stocks."

Khandoshko believes investors shouldn't wait for an obvious turning point, because one may never come. "Rather than looking for a specific event or announcement, they should integrate tariff risks into their long-term strategy," she said. "This means evaluating how particular companies might be impacted if tariffs are imposed on their goods or services."
Others agree, adding that tampering with the nation's Treasury market is a bad idea going forward.
"There may not be an &#8216;all clear&#8217; signal on tariffs because of politics," said David Russell, global head of market strategy at TradeStation Group in Chicago. "Officials may quietly backpedal on them without a lot of publicity. This crisis started with a bang, but it might end with a whimper."
Russell also offers a "lessons learned" factor for investors to absorb when the tariff-related carnage is over.
"Investors have learned that the bond market matters," he noted. "Our system relies on a functioning Treasury market, which requires a degree of foreign participation. Undermining that system threatens the foundation of the stock market and the entire economy."

Sanders will have a chip on his shoulder after falling in the draft, but given the Browns' depth at the position, he may not see the field next season.

Shough could be the immediate starter for the Saints and get a chance to compete for the award.
Another trend to watch will be the tight end position with Brock Bowers (Raiders) placing second in voting last year after breaking several records for the position. No tight end has ever won offensive rookie of the year.
Tight ends Loveland and Tyler Warren (+3,000) were first round picks who will be likely day one starters and could compete for the award as long as no quarterback has a huge season.
In the last 10 seasons, there have been five quarterbacks to win the award, along with three running backs and two wide receivers.
Travis Hunter is the other topic to watch as he is a two-way player and expected to play both wide receiver and cornerback for the Jaguars, who moved up to take him in the 2025 draft.
Fanduel, owned by Flutter Entertainment (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FLUT#NYSE">FLUT</a>), also has betting lines of Hunter winning either rookie of the year award at odds of +440 and odds of him winning both offensive and defensive rookie of the year at +5,000.
With Hunter playing both sides of the ball, it may hurt his chances of winning either award, while playing both positions likely helped him winning the Heisman Trophy, which went to the best overall college football player for both offense and defense.
Across the last 10 drafts, the second overall pick won five Rookie of the Year awards for either offense or defense. That trend that could favor Hunter.
