Wall Street opens the week on a quiet note, with major indexes steady as investors await potential trade breakthroughs during high-level <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">U.S.-China talks in London.</a>



The S&amp;P 500 is flat at 6,000, holding near record highs after rallying nearly 25% since the April 7 low, while the Nasdaq 100 inched 0.3% higher to 21,830.



Small-cap stocks continue to outperform, extending their catch-up trade, with the Russell 2000 up 0.7% to its highest level since early March.



The lack of market-moving economic data kept the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields little changed. The 10-year yield holds around 4.47%, while the 30-year sits at 4.96%.



Gold resumed its upward trend, gaining 0.8% to $3,330 per ounce after two days of declines. But it&#8217;s silver that continues to steal the spotlight, surging nearly 2% to $36.67 per ounce — the highest level since February 2012 — and up more than 10% over the past week, as investors seek the next bullish trade in metals following gold's 2025 breakout.



Other metals also rallied, with platinum up 4%, palladium rising 3.1% and copper gaining 2%.



Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) attracted fresh bids, climbing above $108,000 to its highest level since May 29.

The meeting came after President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed trade issues on the phone&nbsp;last week.



China has reportedly&nbsp;granted temporary approvals&nbsp;for the export of rare earths, while jetliner&nbsp;Boeing Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>) has&nbsp;begun commercial jet deliveries&nbsp;in China, CNBC <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/09/asia-stock-markets-today-live-updates-june-9-2025.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a> on Monday.



China's&nbsp;consumer price inflation&nbsp;dropped by 0.1% in May, compared to Reuters consensus estimates of 0.2%. The producer price index declined 3.3% compared to a 3.2% analyst consensus estimate.



China's export growth&nbsp;missed expectations in May, plunging 48.3% year over year as shipments to the U.S. declined sharply.



Rare earth elements play significant roles, from smartphones to electric vehicles to fighter jets. The U.S. depends on China for ~70% of imports of rare earth elements, signaling U.S. supply chain risks, SCMP <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scmp.com/economy/global-economy/article/3313697/ahead-us-china-talks-chinas-rare-earth-trade-data-may-shows-leverage-action" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a> on Monday, citing analyst estimates.



Beijing has maintained export controls on&nbsp;medium and heavy rare earths, which it announced on April 4 despite the Geneva, Switzerland understanding in May.



Last week, UBS Group&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/large-cap/25/06/45729089/china-stocks-get-boost-as-ubs-hsbc-cite-stimulus-hopes-tariff-truce-cheap-valuations" rel="noreferrer noopener">expressed optimism&nbsp;about</a> Chinese stocks, citing&nbsp;the recent tariff pause with the U.S., potential&nbsp;stimulus measures from Beijing, and attractive low valuations as key drivers.



Neil Hosie of UBS said Beijing's economic policy measures in September and the emergence of artificial intelligence start-up&nbsp;DeepSeek's affordable models sparked global investor interest in China equities.



Hosie said a 90-day tariff truce and Beijing's hopes for domestic stimulus have translated into higher inflows into China's markets.

Think late 2017: a suppressed VIX and steady S&amp;P rally laid the groundwork for early 2018's brutal snapback. Those who dismissed growing tail risks were caught flat-footed.



We're seeing similar dynamics this time: the VIX remains subdued, but subtle signals — like flattened skew and a sticky VVIX — suggest investors are quietly hedging rather than celebrating.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Are High-Beta Arenas The Next Market Move?</h2>



Sector-wise, this serenity has pumped up high-beta arenas. Tech-centric ETFs like the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) and the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMH#NASDAQ">SMH</a>) are pacing the gains while momentum names, especially the Magnificent Seven, continue to dominate flows. XLK has gained about 11% and SMH is up about 16% over the past month alone. The Mag 7-tracking Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAGS#BATS">MAGS</a>) is up 10.75% over the last month.



Meanwhile, defensive pockets like consumer staples and utilities aren't moving enough to signal that safety trades are safe.



Recent headlines may have cooled rising tensions with China and delivered solid jobs data, offering a backdrop of optimism. Some strategists even see room for the S&amp;P to drift to <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/third-time-lucky-citi-changes-its-s-p-target-once-more-after-index-hits-6-000-bd3fac80">6,300</a> or beyond later this year. Yet complacency is a restless beast.



The real question now is whether this serene setup turns into a springboard for more upside… or an overdue reversal. Without obvious catalysts &#8211; Fed moves, unexpected inflation or global shocks &#8211; the market may stay mellow. 



But volatility has a reputation for snapping back suddenly. And when it does, high-growth and leveraged names are often the first to feel the burn.



For now, investors have a choice: ride the calm or prepare for the turbulence when it returns. Quiet markets are attractive. Just don't mistake that silence for safety.

S&P 500's Steady Climb To 6000 Just Killed The VIX – What This Volatility Crash Means For The Next Market Move

Self-driving cars are poised to disrupt the $430-billion U.S. auto insurance market, according to Goldman Sachs, as fewer accidents and shifting risks could cut insurance costs by more than half over <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/expert-ideas">the next 15 years.</a>



In a research note shared Monday, Goldman analyst Mark Delaney indicated that insurance costs are projected to decline from roughly $0.50 per mile in 2025 to just $0.23 per mile by 2040.



That compression could severely challenge the current economics of the insurance sector.



&#8220;Autonomy could significantly reduce the number of auto accidents, particularly those caused by human error,&#8221; Delaney stated. 



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Autonomous Vehicles Threaten Auto Insurance Model, But Industry Has Time To Adjust</h3>



The U.S. auto insurance market stands at around $432 billion today, including $360 billion in personal coverage and $72 billion in commercial.



 As vehicles become safer and smarter, Goldman sees a major transformation in how risk is priced and how legal liability is assigned.



"The two primary long-term risks to auto insurers, are declines in accident frequency and changes in claim costs and legal liability," Delaney said.



Autonomy, especially through Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), is already reducing accident frequency while simultaneously pushing up repair costs due to increasingly complex vehicles. 



Goldman forecasts that even with declining accident rates, a modest rise in total vehicle count and higher cost per claim—driven by both tech-heavy cars and litigation—will support modest premium growth over the next 10 to 15 years.



&#8220;We expect a continuation of the modest real growth that the auto insurance market has produced over recent decades/years, driven by increases in the number of vehicles and above-CPI increases in cost per claim,&#8221; Delaney said. 



While the long-term outlook for autonomous vehicles shows potential growth, the Global X Autonomous &amp; Electric Vehicles ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DRIV#NASDAQ">DRIV</a>) has slipped 7% year-to-date, still reflecting some market skepticism.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Will Robotaxis Kill Traditional Insurance?</h3>



Self-driving vehicles are creating both threats and opportunities for the car insurance industry. Goldman estimates that the market for robotaxi insurance could reach $1 billion to $1.5 billion by 2030, still a small fraction of the broader market.



Yet, new players may enter the market posing a competitive threat to established insurers. 



&#8220;Some larger companies in the AV space could self-insure,&#8221; the note said, thus reducing the commercial opportunity for traditional insurers such as Progressive Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PGR#NYSE">PGR</a>) and Allstate Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALL#NYSE">ALL</a>). 



Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>), and Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>) are already offering insurance, though mainly on a small scale. Tesla earned about $317 million in insurance revenue in 2024, while Rivian partners with underwriters like Nationwide and Progressive to avoid taking on risk directly.



More than just who underwrites coverage, the very nature of auto insurance could change. 



According to Goldman Sachs, autonomy could shift insurance from covering driver error to managing product liability and cyber risks—areas that fall outside the traditional underwriting expertise of most insurers. 



Traditional insurers may need to invest in new capabilities to stay competitive, while automakers looking to expand into insurance will have to prove they can manage risk profitably without adding balance sheet losses.

Self-Driving Cars May Slash Insurance Costs 50% By 2040, Challenge Traditional Insurers: Goldman Sachs

As China&#8217;s May export data missed expectations just ahead of the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/politics/25/06/45832550/us-and-china-resume-trade-talks-in-london-after-trumps-call-with-xi-jinping">second round of U.S.-China</a> trade negotiations, leading experts are offering sharply divergent interpretations of how the data will be leveraged during the trade talks. 



What Happened: While Mohamed A. El-Erian, a senior economist and former CEO of PIMCO, has sounded an alarm over &#8220;worrisome&#8221; figures, Bob Elliott, the CIO at Unlimited Funds, suggests China faces &#8220;little urgency&#8221; to concede.



According to El Erian, recent Chinese trade and inflation data were particularly troubling as May&#8217;s export figures fell below consensus forecasts.



The exports in May grew by 4.8%, missing the expected 5%, &#8220;it highlights the growing pressures the Chinese economy is under,&#8221; said El Erian.



Despite a rise in trade surplus by 25% compared to the previous year, El Erian noted that inflation in China experienced its &#8220;fourth consecutive month of negative readings,&#8221; falling by 0.1%, and producer price index inflation registered a negative 3.3%.

In stark contrast, Elliott presented a more sanguine view, asserting that despite U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods &#8220;running at 30%,&#8221; recent data shows &#8220;little indication of a slowdown in the Chinese economy.&#8221; He believes these &#8220;stable economic conditions suggest little urgency for the Chinese to make a disadvantageous deal&#8221; in the ongoing trade talks.



He attributed this resilience to China&#8217;s strategic redirection of its export capacity &#8220;away from the US and to other jurisdictions.&#8221; While exports to the U.S. have indeed fallen by 34.5%, Elliott highlighted that &#8220;exports to other locations are up 11.4%.&#8221;

NASA Delays Boeing Starliner Flight To 2026 Amid Ongoing Technical Challenges

After a strong earnings response from Argan Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AGX#NYSE">AGX</a>), traders now look cautious about future upside, especially as earnings per share and growth expectations trim back. With high implied volatility and a likely consolidation period, this is the perfect time to sell options on the stock and turn that volatility into revenue.



The best trade in AGX&#8217;s situation is a short iron condor into July's expiration, as it&#8217;s a solid and low-risk way to collect revenue. 



A short iron condor is a limited-risk options trade in which we sell both a call spread and a put spread. Essentially, we&#8217;re collecting revenue from high options volatility while presenting a scenario where prices are bound within a range. 



The short iron condor requires margin that is calculated by noting the distance between the long strike and the short strike. In this case, that margin number is $1,000 for each iron condor sold:

The breakeven prices of the stock at expiration on this trade are $234.87 on the upper bound and $145.13 on the lower bound. If prices hold between these ranges, we will leave the trade with a 100% profit at expiration. 



As for risk, the margin requirement is $1,000 (for each short iron condor) minus the credit collected ($487), which exposes us to $513 of risk if prices expand outside our breakeven calculations above.
