The bond market signals coincide with a deepening global market rout triggered by President Donald Trump&#8216;s sweeping new tariff policies. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Protecting Against A 1987-Style Crash</h2>
With the market continuing its relentless drive lower, there are a few outcomes that can unfold over the next week or two. Here are option trades (with fill prices) to capture extreme profits in one or more of these scenarios. But equally important, we look at trades to avoid because of poor pricing.
The most likely possibilities for the market in the near future are:
<ol>
<li>A sharp move higher, from extreme oversold conditions (no news)</li>
<li>A violent move higher, based on a truce in the ongoing trade war</li>
<li>A continuous move straight down for 30-90 days, like 2022</li>
<li>Or a violent move lower, on either no news or an acceleration in the trade war</li>
</ol>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The More Likely Scenarios</h2>
In our opinion, Scenarios 1 and 2 are the most likely to occur. Unfortunately, the options pricing to capture these moves is extremely poor, which generates mediocre profits even if the forecast comes true.
Recall that we discussed the 2022 Scenario discussed in an earlier Nuclear Option Substack post, with an example bearish trade in TSLA that was profitable. And because of the potential for a violent move up (on tariff / trade war truce) we would avoid re-initiating this trade because of the extremely high risk.
The final scenario, a violent move lower, perhaps Monday at the open (like 1987) is the only scenario with decently priced spread trades.
Our favorite trade from this morning was this:

<li>Long VIX Index 70-90 Call Vertical Spread Expiring April 16 at 0.20.</li>
</ul>
This trade risks 20- for a 2000- potential gain. Although it is a low probability trade, the potential profits more than make up for it. If we get a 1987 type crash on Monday morning, this is the trade have.

How to Protect Against A 1987-Style S&P 500 Crash Scenario

On Sunday, Ross Gerber, the CEO of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth &amp; Investment Management, shared a workaround to President Donald Trump's new tariffs on EU goods, revealing that U.S. consumers can avoid taxes by ordering items valued under $800 from the EU.
What Happened: Gerber highlighted an email from Swedish luxury shoemaker Morjas &amp; Company, which reassured U.S. customers that orders below $800 remain duty-free under current U.S. import regulations.
He shared this insight with his over 387,000 followers on X, formerly Twitter, writing, "Seems like if you order things in under $800 increments from the EU, then Trump can't tax you. Expect more of these emails from companies."
The email from Morjas explained that although the new tariffs have increased duties on EU products, the "de minimis rule" still applies to shipments under $800, meaning they remain exempt from additional duties or taxes.
&#8220;Steep tariffs on products from the European Union means that shipments above the 800 USD threshold may now be subject to higher import duties upon arrival in the U.S. The final amount depends on how customs classifies the products in your order,&#8221; the email read.
