A personal finance expert recently offered up some advice and commentary on President Donald Trump's potential tariffs.
Author Ramit Sethi is<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/05/38627546/i-will-teach-you-to-be-rich-author-ramit-sethi-became-a-self-made-millionaire-he-now-shares-his-simp"> best known for the book</a> "I Will Teach You To Be Rich," hosting the "Money For Couples" podcast and hosting "How To Get Rich" on Netflix.
Sethi offered some expert advice on how to survive these uncertain times due to Trump's tariffs.
Here are three of the key pieces of advice and commentary shared by Sethi, as reported by <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/meganeliscomb/ramit-sethi-trump-tariffs">Buzzfeed</a>.
Middle Class Hit Harder: Sethi said that tariffs will likely hit the middle class and poor Americans harder than wealthy people, something investors of all wealth levels should be aware of.
"There is good data showing that on an annual basis, these tariffs will hit the median American household, costing them over $2,500 per year. Trump's tariffs are directly a tax on the poor and middle class," Sethi said.
Sethi said tariffs could be instituted only to help provide a "big fat tax cut" for the wealthy.
Don't Panic On Retirement Accounts: While there are increased levels of uncertainty due to tariffs, the author cautions against making drastic moves and changing investment strategies.
"If you are in your 20s, 30s – even 40s – you can reasonably expect that the market will go up some years and it will go down some years," Sethi said.
The personal finance expert said young investors have a luxury that their investments will compound over time.
"What this means is, stop looking at your investment accounts and in general, keep investing consistently."
Sethi said there is a concern that seeing stocks go down and too many red days will lead to panic selling.
"I saw it happen in 2001, I saw it happen in 2008, I saw it happen in 2020. You can literally cost yourself millions of dollars if you make a panic decision."
Selling during a high volatile time could be one of the "worst financial decisions you can possibly make in your entire life," the expert warns.
Sethi said the stock market has recovered after world wars, during pandemics and other crises.
"I plan to be continuing to invest, and if you do the same, it will give you a very good shot at living at a very rich life."
Beef Up Emergency Fund: The personal finance expert said, instead of panic selling and worrying about retirement accounts, the number one focus should be on savings.
"I have an aggressive recommendation that I'm making, and that is to focus on assembling a 12-month emergency fund," Sethi said.
The expert said an emergency fund is typically recommended to be three to six months worth of funds.
"The only other time that I have recommended a 12-month emergency fund was when COVID hit, which should suggest the seriousness of the situation that we are in."
Sethi said that the tariff war likely isn't over and many other countries now see America as "an unstable partner."
"I see a lot of uncertainty ahead of us."
Sethi cautioned that companies may lay off employees in the future. Having an emergency fund could provide a cushion from a job cut or other hardships.
"You do not want to get into a situation where your back is against the financial wall, and you have to make really bad decisions."

'You Could Literally Cost Yourself Millions': Finance Expert Warns Against 'Panic Decision' On Trump Tariffs

The Board of Directors of General American Investors Company, Inc., a closed-end investment company listed on the New York Stock Exchange (GAM) authorized the repurchase of an additional 2,000,000 outstanding shares of common stock when the shares are trading at a discount from the underlying net asset value by at least 8%. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is fighting against criticism from recent stock buying activity that came shortly before <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/25/04/44697177/marjorie-taylor-greene-buys-the-dip-congresswoman-purchases-shares-of-apple-amazon-nike-and-more-following-tariff-related-sell-off">a market rally.</a>

What Happened: Disclosures from Rep. Greene (R-Ga.) showed her <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/gov-trades/members/marjorie-taylor-greene">buying shares</a> of several stocks as the market declined on news of President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs, as shown on the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/gov-trades/members/marjorie-taylor-greene">Benzinga Government Trades page.</a>
Those stocks quickly soared after Trump announced a pause to tariffs, turning Greene's investment of $21,000 to $315,000 into a quickly profitable one that drew attention from many accounts that follow Congress trading activity.
Greene bought shares of technology stocks like Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) and Qualcomm Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QCOM#NASDAQ">QCOM</a>) that were hurt by potential tariffs. Greene also disclosed buying Nike Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NKE#NYSE">NKE</a>) and Lululemon Athletica (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LULU#NASDAQ">LULU</a>) shares, which soared after Trump paused tariffs.
Greene took pride in her transactions, despite other members of Congress calling for an investigation into whether Trump and his allies participated in insider trading.
"I think that criticism is laughable. President Trump has been talking about tariffs for decades," Greene told reporters when asked about the trades at a recent town hall event in Georgia in a clip <a href="https://x.com/unusual_whales/status/1912456434081480777">shared </a>by Unusual Whales. The Congresswoman used the opportunity to boast about her stock performance, which ranked her as one of the top trading members of Congress in 2024.
"I don't place my buys and sells,&#8221; Greene said, citing an agreement she has with her portfolio manager, who handles all the buying and selling of stocks. "He did a great job. Guess what he did. He bought the dip. And that's what anybody that has financial sense does.&#8221;
Greene also said her portfolio manager did not have inside information, everything was public and a potential tariff pause wasn't a secret.

Why It's Important: Greene is Trump&#8217;s close ally. The timing of the buys shortly before the tariff pause was announced has raised red flags.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44806734/marjorie-taylor-greene-made-large-stock-purchases-ahead-of-trumps-90-day-tariff-pause-hakeem-jeffries-calls-it-problematic">urged a ban</a> on stock trading by members of Congress after news of Greene's trades circulated.
"We obviously continue to highlight while this is problematic," Jeffries told MSNBC.
Several Congress members have <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/05/39096827/exclusive-khanna-says-shameful-congress-members-profited-from-stocks-calls-for-trading-ban-makin">called for a ban </a>on the buying and selling on stocks and options by members of Congress, but the item has not been voted on in recent years.
Greene went several years without disclosing stock purchases before unveiling a handful in 2024 in May 2024. That disclosure has been followed up with trades every month or two, including the most recent trades.
As Benzinga previously reported, several of Greene's trades could be problematic given the timing and her committee assignments.
Greene <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44255172/marjorie-taylor-greene-buys-more-bitcoin-etf-shares-ahead-of-trumps-strategic-reserve-executive-order">disclosed buying shares </a>of the iShares Bitcoin Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IBIT#NASDAQ">IBIT</a>) ETF shortly before Trump announced he would make a Bitcoin Strategic Reserve.
Greene also disclosed buying shares of Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>) earlier this year. Greene serves on the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence under the House Committee on Homeland Security. Palantir is the recipient of government contracts related to Homeland Security. Critics argue that Greene and other members of Congress could have access to inside information from committee assignments and new contracts before they are made public.
While Greene insists she does not have prior knowledge of what stocks her portfolio manager bought or why he was able to time the bottom so perfectly, increased public pressure could lead to more discussion of banning Congress from trading in the future.

In a healthy economy, tariffs should have a long-term impact on the stock market.
But we don't live in a healthy economy.
Regardless of what any politician does to the stock market…
The Federal Reserve can add digits on a computer screen, and your stocks will skyrocket.
And that's exactly what they'll be doing soon.
Not necessarily because they want to…because they have to.
Here's the situation.
The U.S. is $36.6 trillion in debt.
$9.2 of that $36 trillion needs to either be refinanced or paid this year.
Let's examine both options and see how all roads lead to higher stock prices.
Option 1:
The $9.2 trillion is paid off.
There are only a handful of ways to make this happen.
<ul>
<li>Tax citizens to pay it off</li>
<li>Cut government spending and reallocate funds</li>
<li>Print money (Quantitative Easing)</li>
</ul>
Here's why printing money is the only logical choice of the 3.
The government collected ~$5 trillion in taxes last year.
Which means we're still $4 trillion short.
Plus, Trump is preaching zero income taxes.
So, raising taxes to collect $4 trillion more? Political suicide.
Paying off the $9.2 trillion with taxes is off the table.
Next, the government can cut spending elsewhere and reallocate funds.
Such as the military, federal programs, etc.
But that wouldn't work either.
Military = $900B
Social Security = 1.4T
Medicaid and other health insurance programs = $1.6T
Even if I tally up all government expenditures, it still doesn't pay off the debt.
And finally…the only possible choice.
The Federal Reserve will perform quantitative easing.
Which is a fancy way of saying they'll print money out of thin air.
This money will be used to purchase bonds from the US Treasury.
This directly injects cash into the financial system.
If the Fed creates $9.2 trillion, it's practically impossible for stocks not to rise.
Alright, so that's what'll happen if the Fed performs quantitative easing.
The other option is refinancing the debt at new interest rates.
Basically…kicking the can down the road.
The problem with refinancing at new rates is that interest rates are relatively high right now.
And the US is already paying ~$1.2T in yearly interest.
If we refinance $9.2T at current rates, that $1.2T in yearly interest would soar.
Not good.
So what's the solution?
Cutting rates, of course.
Afterwards, the debt will be rolled over.
So the Fed's options are the following:
Print $9.2 trillion (stocks would go parabolic)
Or cut rates, which means more lending will occur.
Lending with interest is how smaller banks effectively create money.
So no matter what happens, more money will be printed.
Which means your assets will rise.
There you have it.
Stocks will rise – regardless of Trump's tariffs.
All roads lead to the money printer.

The most likely answer is 2026.
We live in a global economy with 4-year debt cycles.
