What Happened: Tesla delivered 524 vehicles in Quebec in Q1 2025, an 87% year-on-year decline compared to last year, according <a href="https://www.ledevoir.com/economie/882790/quebec-tourne-massivement-dos-tesla?">to</a> data obtained by Le Devoir.
The report suggests that the decline in sales is a result of Musk's close involvement with U.S. President Donald Trump, but also because Quebec as well as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/03/44488018/canada-bars-tesla-from-ev-rebates-programs-in-response-to-illegitimate-and-illegal-us-tariffs">Canadian governments ended key incentives</a> for the company&#8217;s EVs in the province.
The report also mentions that new registrations for Tesla vehicles in Quebec fell to a two-year low, signaling increased avoidance among potential EV buyers for Musk's company.
Why It Matters: Tesla has been grappling with declining sales figures in multiple markets across the world. Recently, the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/eurozone/25/05/45616006/teslas-european-woes-see-no-end-april-sales-crash-49-as-rivals-race-ahead-in-ev-market">company's sales fell 49% </a>in Europe in April 2025 as BEVs recorded a surge in market share in the region.

Despite the declining sales in most regions, Tesla has maintained a strong growth in vehicle sales in the Chinese domestic market as the company <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/05/45614051/tesla-bull-gary-black-weighs-in-as-elon-musks-ev-giant-logs-over-11000-new-registrations-for-straight-second-week">registered over 11,000 new sales</a> for two consecutive weeks, which could provide some relief to the company ahead of the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/25/05/45662671/tesla-targets-june-12-for-robotaxi-launch-in-austin-elon-musk-says-company-ramped-up-fsd-testing-a-month-ahead-of-schedule">June Robotaxi launch</a>.

Tesla Deliveries Drop 87% In Quebec in Q1, Hitting 2-Year Low Amid Incentive Cuts, Musk's Political Ties

NIO Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>) shares are trading slightly lower in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/movers" rel="noreferrer noopener">premarket session on Wednesday</a>.
The Chinese EV firm is reportedly making strides in its national battery swap network with the completion of initial coverage across all districts in Tianjin, <a target="_blank" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/05/28/nio-swap-stations-coverage-all-districts-tianjin/" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a> CnEV Post.
The report adds that the company&#8217;s energy division, NIO Power, now operates 56 battery swap stations across Tianjin&#8217;s 16 districts, marking another step in its broader &#8220;Power Up Counties&#8221; expansion campaign.
NIO&#8217;s commitment to enhancing electric vehicle infrastructure also extends into northeastern China through a newly formed partnership with ZDK Group, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/05/45523879/whats-going-on-with-nio-stock-on-tuesday-3" rel="noreferrer noopener">state-owned firm based in Shenyang</a>.

The alliance will oversee the construction of 100 new battery swap sites across Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, and Inner Mongolia to support growing EV adoption.
The &#8220;Power Up Counties&#8221; initiative aims to build a dense, accessible network of battery swap stations across county-level regions nationwide. So far, NIO has completed deployment in regions including Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Guangdong.
In Tianjin alone, nearly 1 million battery swaps have been conducted, highlighting significant traction for this model of EV servicing, CnEV Post adds.
Unlike many provinces, Tianjin operates without county-level divisions, focusing efforts instead on urban districts.
This progress comes at a time of intensified competition in China&#8217;s EV sector.
Over the weekend, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/26/chinas-byd-sees-shares-plunge-8percent-as-ev-maker-cuts-prices.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">CNBC</a> report stated that rival BYD Co. Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) triggered market turbulence by slashing prices on its flagship electric models.
The move, aimed at driving sales and protecting market share, sent shares of NIO, XPeng Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>), and Li Auto Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LI#NASDAQ">LI</a>) tumbling as investors recalibrated expectations in light of a renewed pricing war.
As the Chinese EV market continues to evolve, investors might consider related exposure through ETFs like the Invesco Golden Dragon China ETF(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PGJ#NASDAQ">PGJ</a>).

What's Going On With NIO Stock On Wednesday?

Regulators from China's commerce ministry are set to meet with executives from several Chinese automakers, including EV giant BYD Co. Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>), to discuss the surge in zero-mile used car sales.
What Happened: The meeting is set to take place on Tuesday afternoon, according to an anonymous source cited in a report by Reuters published on Tuesday.
A zero-mile used car is a car that has been registered with the authorities and has number plates, which make it a ‘sold' car. However, the car has never been driven. The report suggests over 4000 vendors sell these cars domestically in China.
The meeting also includes China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), China Automobile Dealers Association (CADA), as well as executives from Dongfeng Motor Group Co., Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DNFGY#OTC">DNFGY</a>), the report suggests.
Why It Matters: The news comes in as used EVs are steadily picking up the pace. Recently, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) announced it will begin <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45487522/tesla-is-accepting-trade-ins-for-2024-cybertruck-amid-plummeting-sales-figures-report">accepting trade-ins </a>for the Cybertruck, a year after the company released the product into the market.
Elsewhere, BYD has been ramping up its European goals, as the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/05/45560953/byds-europe-pivot-in-full-swing-with-new-26000-affordable-ev-amid-tesla-sales-slump">company recently unveiled </a>its Dolphin Surf hatchback EV in the region. The Dolphin Surf is the Euro-spec version of BYD's best-selling Seagull EV.
BYD also <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45564693/byd-outsells-elon-musks-tesla-amid-european-plans-shift-into-gear">surpassed Tesla sales</a> for the first time recently as BYD registered 7,231 battery-electric vehicles in Europe in April, which was higher than Tesla&#8217;s 7,165 units during the same period, according to expert data.

Chinese Regulators Will Meet Tesla Rival BYD, Other Companies To Discuss 'Zero Mile' Used Cars: Report

Shares of Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) might be in for a rough week, according to the Managing Partner of The Future Fund, Gary Black, following the announcement of steep discounts by the company&#8217;s Chinese rival.
What Happened: Black took to X on Monday, addressing concerns regarding the latest price war in the highly competitive EV market and its impact on Tesla. He was referring to Chinese automaker BYD Auto Co. Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) and its recently announced discounts ranging from 6% and 20% across its EV franchises.
He notes that shares of BYD are down 7.7% in the Hong Kong stock exchange, which he attributes to the price cuts that are set to last until June 30. He also says that these cuts &#8220;will likely be matched by Chinese EV competitors,&#8221; hinting at a race to the bottom.

&#8220;This could weigh down $TSLA when it resumes trading Tuesday,&#8221; he says, despite the positive macroeconomic news, such as Trump&#8217;s decision to extend the tariff deadline for the EU, which Black believes holds limited upside for Tesla. 
On CEO Elon Musk's recent pledge to re-focus on Tesla, Black states bluntly that he views the announcement as a &#8220;non-event,&#8221; adding that it would do little to &#8220;change TSLA's declining delivery trajectory,&#8221; which consensus estimates peg at 1.7 million for the full-year, down 5% on a year-over-year basis.
Black also expressed skepticism over Tesla's upcoming low-cost EV, expected in the third quarter. He&#8217;s concerned that it may end up being &#8220;a scaled-down Model 3 or Model Y,&#8221; rather than an entirely new design. 
If that's the case, he argues, the vehicle likely won't expand Tesla's total addressable market or attract new buyers outside its existing base.

Why It Matters: Musk&#8217;s return to the company as its full-time CEO, following a brief stint in the government has led to a 49% rally in the stock since it was first <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44945402/wedbushs-dan-ives-raises-teslas-price-target-to-350-as-musk-promises-to-significantly-reduce-doge-time">announced last month</a>.
Wedbush Securities Analyst Dan Ives said last week that the company could be headed towards its &#8220;golden period&#8221; following Musk recommitting to the brand, predicting a <a href="https://benzinga.com/markets/25/05/45596536/tesla-bull-dan-ives-thinks-elon-musks-ev-giant-could-be-entering-a-golden-era-says-2-trillion-market">$2 trillion market cap</a> for the stock, citing its robotics and robotaxi plays.
Black, however, remains skeptical of the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45488706/gary-black-thinks-expectations-for-teslas-robotaxi-launch-are-too-high-currently-teslas-autonomy-cant">company&#8217;s robotaxi promises</a>, having said last week that &#8220;Tesla&#8217;s autonomy can&#8217;t be operated hands off/eyes off in most areas of the country,&#8221; calling the company&#8217;s claims into question, along with those of other Tesla bulls.
Ross Gerber of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth Management, who was a long-time Tesla bull himself, echoed similar concerns last week, citing his own experience using the Cybertruck&#8217;s FSD (Full Self-Driving) 13.2.9, which he found to be lackluster.
&#8220;This could be an extremely difficult time for them if they don't pull off or at least convince people that they have a real robotaxi business on the way,&#8221; Gerber said, adding that he believes the stock has been &#8220;overvalued for a while.&#8221;

Price Action: Tesla shares were down 0.50% on Friday, trading at $339.34. Shares of BYD Auto were down 8.59% on Monday, and have extended their decline into Tuesday, with the stock trading down 2.25%, at $415.80 HKD, on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Gary Black Says Price War By BYD Threatens Tesla — Dismisses Elon Musk's Comeback As 'Non-Event'

President&nbsp;Donald Trump&nbsp;just fired a policy warning shot toward Apple Inc.&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), reiterating that he expects the company to manufacture iPhones sold in the U.S. domestically, not in India or anywhere else. If not, he warns, a 25% tariff <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45586328/itariff-threat-trump-turns-up-the-heat-but-apples-chart-still-holds-the-line" rel="noreferrer noopener">could be slapped on the tech giant</a>.

Tesla Back In The Trillionaire Club: EV Stock Revs Back With 40% Rebound, Robotaxi Update

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) battery supplier Contemporary Amperex Technologies Co. Ltd., plans to raise over $4 billion through a stock listing on Hong Kong's stock exchange.
What Happened: The Chinese battery giant will aim to raise the figure by selling over 117.9 million shares priced at HK$263 ($33.75) on the Hong Kong stock exchange, Reuters reported on Monday.
The report also suggests that the deal could be raised to $5.3 billion if an offer size adjustment and a Greenshoe option are implemented, which essentially allows the underwriters to sell more shares if there is sufficient demand.
This is the biggest listing on the planet so far this year, the report said and the final price for the listing could be announced on or before May 19. The company says it will use the money raised to develop its Hungary manufacturing facility.

As Chinese EV giant BYD Co., Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) is gearing up to expand its presence in Europe, satellite images show the company's facility in Hungary taking shape.
What Happened: The images showcase the facility, spread over an area of 1.15 square miles, which can produce over 200,000 units a year, Business Insider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/satellite-photos-show-byds-massive-hungary-factory-taking-shape-2025-4">reported</a> on Wednesday.
According to the report, BYD has invested over $4.5 billion in the factory's construction, and the company expects units to start rolling off the line sometime in the latter half of this year.
The company also has plans to set up a facility in Turkey in the near future, and is considering a third factory in Europe, the report suggests.
Why It Matters: The news comes in as BYD has recently <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44946809/byd-rejigs-european-strategy-amid-lack-of-market-knowledge-and-modest-dealer-network-report">rejigged its European strategy </a>by hiring executives well-versed with the European market from competitors, and trying to focus on Hybrid products.
BYD has since sold over 37,000 units in the European market in Q1 2025, compared to 8,500 units last year around the same time, that's a 335% YoY increase.
The company has also expressed plans to expand into other territories in Asia, as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/emerging-markets/25/04/44904375/tesla-rival-byd-targets-japans-minicar-market-with-for-new-affordable-ev">BYD will reportedly enter</a> the Japanese market with an affordable EV priced at around $17,000, putting it squarely against the Japanese minicars.

Tesla Rival BYD's Hungary Facility Takes Shape, Poised To Produce 200,000 EVs Annually: Report

Stellantis NV (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLA#NYSE">STLA</a>), parent company of Dodge and Jeep, will debut a solid-state battery in the Charger EV.
What Happened: Stellantis announced it will utilize Factorial Energy's solid-state batteries in a demonstration fleet next year in 2026, according to an official statement released on Friday.
The Detroit-based automaker had earlier said its STLA platform is suited for Factorial's solid-state battery tech. The STLA platform sees application in the Jeep Wagoneer S as well as the Dodge Charger.
The solid-state battery cells showcased a 375 Wh/kg energy density in over 600 charge cycles, and can charge from 15% to 90% in 18 minutes, the company said. The battery can operate in temperatures ranging from -22°F to 113°F.
"This breakthrough puts us at the forefront of the solid-state revolution," Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer Ned Curic said in the statement. "This achievement with Stellantis is bringing next-generation battery technology from research to reality," Siyu Huang, CEO of Factorial Energy, said.

Stellantis Announces Breakthrough Solid-State Battery With Factorial Energy, Company Says Technology Will Debut In 2026 Demo Fleet

BYD Co., Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) is pivoting its European strategy as the Chinese EV manufacturer looks to expand into the market.
What Happened: Failing to hire executives with an understanding of the European market, as well as a small dealer network, were some of the ‘strategic missteps' BYD took as it entered into Europe, sources told Reuters on Wednesday.
BYD targeted at least 5% of the European EV Market prior to beginning production at its facility in Hungary, the report says, citing former BYD European Chief Michael Shu. However, the company fell way below expectations, selling over 57,000 vehicles in 2024 with a 2.8% market share.
BYD had announced that Plug-In Hybrids would play a crucial role in its European strategy. That decision came after advice from the company's European special adviser, Alfredo Altavilla — a key figure in the rejig who convinced the brand that EV penetration in many European markets still lags behind ICE and Hybrids, the report suggests.
"It is necessary to educate customers in the green transition.&#8221; Altavilla shared in the report. BYD has since hired various executives from rival companies like Stellantis NV (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLA#NYSE">STLA</a>) as well as appointed executive VP Stella Li in charge of Europe, the report says.
The company's sales in Europe have since experienced a surge, having sold over 37,000 units in the region — including the United Kingdom — in Q1 2025. The company had sold just over 8,500 units last year, around the same time.
Why It Matters: BYD has recently made headway into Japan as the company targets the local minicar market with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/emerging-markets/25/04/44904375/tesla-rival-byd-targets-japans-minicar-market-with-for-new-affordable-ev">an affordable EV</a>. The company had also disrupted the Chinese domestic market by introducing its God's Eye driver assistance system even in affordable models.
BYD had recently unveiled<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/04/44630091/teslas-ev-crown-at-risk-as-byd-closes-in-with-breakthrough-charging-tech"> new charging tech</a>, which was capable of providing over 250 miles of range in just over 5 minutes of charging. BYD is now the world's largest battery EV manufacturer with over 15.7% of the global market share.
Elsewhere, other Chinese manufacturers are also making their way to the European market. However, it could prove to be difficult as Nio Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>) recently announced a delay to the launch of its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44915240/tesla-rival-nio-delays-the-european-launch-of-firefly-ev-report">Firefly EV in Europe</a>.&nbsp;

BYD Resets European EV Strategy After Missing 5% Market Goal Amid Poor Hiring, Weak Dealer Network: Report

Geely Automobile Holdings (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GELYF#OTC">GELYF</a>) announced that the company will share its battery safety patents at the Shanghai Auto Show.
What Happened: The Chinese automaker revealed on Wednesday the &#8220;Geely Global Safety Center,&#8221; which the company says is the world's largest standalone safety lab. It also unveiled a new battery brand dubbed the &#8220;Geely Golden Short Blade Battery.&#8221;
The company says that it will make the Geely Global Safety Center accessible to the automotive industry, as well as share its patent for a battery pack bottom impact testing device &#8220;to support the adoption of critical EV safety standards.&#8221;
Why It Matters: Geely's announcement follows a host of developments made by Chinese EV and battery manufacturers. Recently, Tesla Inc.'s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) battery supplier CATL unveiled <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44894382/tesla-battery-supplier-catl-unveils-new-fast-charging-battery-with-323-mile-range-in-five-minutes">a new battery</a>, which could provide 323 miles of range on a 5-minute charge.
BYD Co., Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) also showcased its advancements in the EV space as it revealed a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/04/44630091/teslas-ev-crown-at-risk-as-byd-closes-in-with-breakthrough-charging-tech">fast-charging technology</a> that could help EVs get a 250-mile range in just over 5 minutes.
Interestingly, Tesla also shared statistics for its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44943086/tesla-announces-more-than-double-the-energy-products-deployed-in-q1-2025-report">energy storage deployments</a> following Tuesday's earnings call, where the company says it deployed more than double the amount of energy storage products in Q1 2025 compared to the same time last year.

China's Geely To Share Battery Safety Patents, Unveils World's Largest EV Safety Lab At Shanghai Auto Show

Chinese electric vehicle heavyweight BYD Company (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) plans to break into Japan's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/electric-vehicle" rel="noreferrer noopener">light minicar</a> market.
Nikkei Asia <a target="_blank" href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Automobiles/Electric-vehicles/BYD-to-enter-Japan-s-mini-EV-segment-in-2026" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a> that the EV maker is planning an early 2026 entry into the market, which has been dominated by local players so far.
BYD is aiming to price its electric minicars at approximately 2.5 million yen ($17,558), placing them among the more affordable options in the segment.
The expansion aligns with the company's accelerating global growth, particularly in Southeast Asia.

In January, BYD revealed a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/43001408/grab-teams-up-with-byd-to-boost-ev-availability-for-southeast-asias-driver-partners" rel="noreferrer noopener">regional collaboration</a> to provide up to 50,000 electric vehicles for Grab's driver-partners throughout Southeast Asia, aiming to boost the presence of eco-friendly transportation options for its customers.
BYD announced a major <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/25/03/44100134/tesla-rival-byd-raises-5-64-billion-through-share-placement-wants-to-use-funds-for-global-domination" rel="noreferrer noopener">capital raise in March to support</a> its global growth and research efforts by entering into an agreement to issue 129.8 million new H shares at HK$335.2 ($43.58) each.
The offering, which accounts for about 4.46% of the company's total shares, is expected to bring in approximately HK$43.38 billion ($5.64 billion) in net proceeds.
The company has led global new energy vehicle sales for three straight years and launched several brands BYD, Fangchengbao, Denza, and Yangwang, to serve a range of segments from mainstream to high-end markets.
In order to strengthen its position against rival Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), BYD unveiled a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/03/44369228/byd-unveils-5-minute-ev-charging-breakthrough-strengthening-edge-over-tesla-stock-spikes-4" rel="noreferrer noopener">charging system capable </a>of fully powering an EV as quickly as refueling a gas vehicle, addressing a major hurdle to broader EV adoption.
China topped worldwide <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/04/44820082/global-electric-vehicle-sales-jump-in-march-what-country-leads-in-sales" rel="noreferrer noopener">electric vehicle sales in the first quarter</a> of 2025, with 2.4 million units sold, a 36% increase from the same period in 2024. Close to one million of those sales occurred in March, approaching the record set in August 2024.
Price Action: BYDDY shares traded lower by 0.71% at $91.22 at the last check on Monday.
