Rho Motion reported today a <a href="https://rhomotion.com/news/global-ev-sales-up-29-in-2025-from-previous-year/">substantial rise in global electric vehicle (EV) sales </a>for March 2025, underscoring continued momentum in the shift toward EVs.
The industry research firm recorded a 29% year-over-year increase in March 2025 EV sales and a 40% gain over February 2025.
According to Rho, 1.7 million EVs were sold globally last month, contributing to 4.1 million units moved in the first quarter.
China led global EV sales in the first quarter of 2025, delivering 2.4 million units, a 36% jump compared to the same timeframe in 2024.
Nearly one million of those were sold in March, coming close to the all-time high reached in August 2024. Although trade friction with the U.S. persists, the effect on Chinese EV exports has been minimal, given the relatively low shipment volume between the two countries. This also includes the Model S and Model X from Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), which are exported from the U.S. to China, in low volumes, but due to the current tariffs, the price would almost double for these Tesla vehicles, said the press release.

Europe posted solid growth in EV sales so far this year, with overall deliveries up 22% year-to-date. Battery EV (BEVs) climbed 27%, while plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) rose by 10%.
In contrast, France experienced an 18% decline in EV purchases YTD, after scaling back state incentives.
The U.K. stood out, recording a 42% increase in BEV sales and surpassing 100,000 total EV units sold in March, its highest monthly total ever.
EV sales across North America, which includes the U.S., Canada, and Mexico rose 16% in the first quarter of 2025.
However, recent policy changes could shift market dynamics. Last year, around 60% of EVs sold in the U.S. were assembled domestically. Nevertheless, a notable portion still comes from international factories, many of which now face steeper trade hurdles.

Tesla's EV Crown At Risk As BYD Closes In With Breakthrough Charging Tech

The 25% tariff on imported cars and parts could wipe out up to 3 million vehicle sales, slash automaker profits in half and throw the U.S. auto supply chain into chaos as manufacturers scramble to reconfigure operations in a high-stakes race against time, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/expert-ideas">according to Bank of America</a>. 
In a note shared Wednesday, research analyst John P. Babcock said President Donald Trump&#8217;s new trade action announced on March 26 would trigger significant demand destruction, higher consumer prices, and a severe blow to profitability, especially if additional parts tariffs are confirmed in May.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How Bad Could It Get For US Auto Sales?</h3>
The proposed tariffs—taking effect April 3—apply to all imported cars, light trucks and several critical components, including engines, transmissions, and electrical systems. According to Babcock, the industry response will be higher vehicle prices across the board.
If manufacturers pass along the full 25% tariff to consumers, BofA estimates a sales loss of 3.2 million units at the current trend rate of 16 million vehicles annually — a 20% collapse. A more conservative case, with only 15% of costs passed through, still implies a demand drop of 2.5 million units, or about 15%.
"Affordability has already been a challenge," Babcock said. "This only exacerbates the situation."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Can Automakers Reshore Production?</h3>
There may be limited relief for automakers with idle U.S. plant capacity. 
Bank of America estimates that more than a million vehicle assembly units could be reshored to U.S. factories with minor investments and hiring. General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) and Stellantis NV (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLA#NYSE">STLA</a>) are best positioned for this pivot.
Yet, labor constraints, weak demand for some U.S.-built models and the logistical complexities of scaling production rapidly remain obstacles. 
Over a longer horizon, most automakers could bring production stateside, yet that would require "large capital investments" and likely further tilt the product mix toward higher-end vehicles, leaving a gap in affordable options.
Chinese automakers such as BYD Co. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>), Geely, and Xiaomi could potentially fill that gap if they establish U.S. manufacturing.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What's The Real Cost Of Parts Tariffs?</h3>
While full vehicle reshoring is challenging, the real pain may come from the auto parts tariffs. A final decision is expected by May 3.
Babcock outlined three scenarios: targeted tariffs on powertrain and electronics, blanket tariffs on all auto parts, or a hybrid combination.
If all parts are hit with the 25% tariff, the cost per U.S.-assembled vehicle jumps by $3,285, including $1,065 for powertrain parts, $840 for electronics, and $1,380 for other components.
That alone translates to an average price increase of 8%+, which could either be passed on to consumers or absorbed in profit margins.
In total, the industry faces a $26 billion hit under this scenario, equivalent to "halving all automaker profits in the U.S.," Babcock said.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Reshoring Auto Parts? Not Likely</h3>
While some optimism exists around reshoring vehicle assembly, the parts side tells a different story.
According to Babcock, reshoring auto parts manufacturing is "essentially impossible" due to high U.S. labor costs and a lack of skilled workers.
Unlike vehicle plants that may have idle capacity, parts suppliers have little to no slack in the U.S. system, leaving supply chains exposed and North American production vulnerable to disruptions.
Tariffs on powertrain components may offer a narrow path to incentivize domestic production, but anything broader risks major breakdowns in vehicle manufacturing continuity.

Trump's Auto Tariffs Could Crush Demand, Blow $26 Billion Hole In Industry Profits

Trump Imposes 25% Tariffs On Auto Imports, Says 'This Will Continue To Spur Growth' — Canada, EU Slam The Move

NBA legend <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/michael-jordan">Michael Jordan</a> once famously said, "Republicans buy sneakers too," emphasizing his choice to steer clear of politics while his iconic shoes propelled Nike to the pinnacle of sports retail.
That&#8217;s advice Tesla (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) shareholders may wish the company&#8217;s CEO, Elon Musk, had taken to heart. Shares are down more than 32% this year, as Musk&#8217;s heavy involvement with the new administration has cratered Tesla&#8217;s electric vehicle (EV) sales.
Tesla sales are down 40% in Europe compared to last year, even as total EV sales soared by 26%. The picture is only slightly rosier in the U.S., with Tesla sales down 11% in January. In China, the world&#8217;s largest market for electric vehicles, Tesla has been overtaken by a domestic rival for the first time.
But all this bad news for Tesla has been great news for other EV makers.&nbsp;
Here are four non-Tesla EV stocks set to profit from soaring EV sales.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BYD Company Ltd. </h2>
News of BYD Company's (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) battery breakthrough earlier this month sent the stock to new all-time highs. BYD's new Super-E platform promises to provide a range of 249 miles with a simple five-minute charge, easing a major customer concern. However, investors with keen eyes have had BYD on their radar for a while, as the stock has risen 88% in the last 12 months (including a 43% rip over the previous three). As mentioned above, the company is now outselling Tesla in China, and the government has been providing very accommodating policies.

BYD is a conglomerate with several divisions. BYD Auto is the most well-known, thanks to its electric and hybrid vehicles and battery charging solutions. Still, the company also has BYD Electronics and FinDream, which manufacture electronic parts, vehicle components and batteries. The automotive division brings in 80% of the company's revenue. The stock trades at 32 times earnings, far cheaper than TSLA, and the chart shows signs of the uptrend continuing. The share price is firmly above both the 50-day and 200-day moving averages, and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicates that the upside momentum remains intact.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Volkswagen AG </h2>
The German automotive giant, Volkswagen Ag (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VWAGY#OTC">VWAGY</a>) is finally showing signs of breaking out of a multi-year downtrend. Tesla's losses in Europe have been Volkswagen's gains as registration numbers are skyrocketing for several of the firm's vehicles, including the newest top-selling European battery-powered EV: the Volkswagen ID.4. The Volkswagen ID.7 had the third most number of registrations to start the year, an upswing of more than 650%. On the plug-in hybrid side, the Volkswagen Tiguan is the second-highest-selling model in 2025, with an upstick of 250% over the previous period in 2024.

Toyota Motors (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TM#NYSE">TM</a>) is the world&#8217;s largest automaker, with a market cap above $251 billion and an annual revenue of about $309 billion. Toyota is choosing to focus on plug-in hybrids over full-battery electric cars, and the RAV4 SUV is a top choice for customers looking for a mix of electric and gas power.

The company already has high margins, reporting a 20.32% gross margin rate and a 10.86% profit margin rate in the most recent quarter. The stock has a forward Price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 8.80 and a Price-to-sales (P/S) rate of 0.86, implying this $250 billion behemoth is undervalued. Additionally, the stock pays a 3.5% dividend yield and scored a 97.95 in Value and 98.51 in Quality on Benzinga Edge rankings, indicating both short- and medium-term upside. Another bullish signal was triggered recently as the stock price breached the 50-day moving average after nearly a year of trading below it.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Honda Motor Co Ltd. </h2>
Honda Motor (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HMC#NYSE">HMC</a>) may not dominate the automobile market share like Toyota. Still, the Tokyo-based manufacturer is known for its highly reliable and safe vehicles, such as the popular Honda Accord and Civic sedan models. The company also has several hybrids and electric cars on its line, including the plug-in versions of the Accord, Civi, and CR-V, a fully electric Honda Prologue, and the fuel cell-powered CR-V e-FCEV.

4 EV Stocks Soaring As Tesla Tumbles

The in-car AI agent can offer parking, nearby restaurant recommendations, and real-time traffic light information.
Alibaba told Bloomberg that the cars produced by Chinese automakers&nbsp;Xpeng Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>) and&nbsp;Zeekr Intelligent Technology Holding (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ZK#NYSE">ZK</a>) leveraged its Qwen model.
Over the next three years, Alibaba committed over 380 billion yuan ($52 billion) to AI infrastructure, such as data centers. Alibaba, BMW Team Up To Bring AI-Powered Smart Assistant In Next-Gen China Cars

Wall Street soared Monday, kicking off the week in full risk-on mode as investors welcomed signs of easing trade tensions and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44459470/us-business-activity-rebounds-as-services-growth-outpaces-forecasts-yet-cost-pressures-intensify">stronger-than-expected economic data. </a>
President Donald Trump&#8216;s softer tone on potential tariffs ahead of the looming April 2, 2025 deadline helped calm nerves. Adding to the optimism, fresh business surveys showed a strong rebound in services activity in March, easing recession worries.
U.S. economic activity accelerated in March, with the Composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rising rom 51.6 in February to to 53.5. Services PMI jumped to 54.3 — well above consensus forecasts of 50.8 and sharply higher than the prior month's 51.0 reading. Yet, the report also flagged a notable uptick in cost pressures, as businesses reported growing concerns over input prices, likely linked to heightened speculation around potential tariff measures.
The S&amp;P 500 jumped 1.75% by midday in New York, on track for its best one-day performance since mid-January. The Nasdaq 100 rallied 2%, mirroring gains from March 14 — the index's strongest day since early November 2024.
Small caps outperformed their large-cap peers, underscoring the market's improving risk appetite. The Russell 2000 surged 2.8%, marking its best session since the post-election rally on Nov. 6, 2024.
Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) led the charge on both the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100, soaring 9.8%, on track for its sharpest one-day gain since early November.
All seven mega-cap tech stocks posted solid gains, with the Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAGS#NYSE">MAGS</a>) climbing 2.9% after Friday's 1.4% rise, setting up what could be its strongest two-day advance since early January.
Every S&amp;P 500 sector, except utilities, traded in positive territory, with consumer discretionary and technology leading the pack.
The U.S. dollar index edged higher, eyeing a fourth consecutive session of gains. Meanwhile, Treasury yields spiked across the curve as investors rotated out of safe-haven assets. The 10-year yield jumped seven basis points to 4.32%, while the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) dropped 0.9%.
Gold pulled back 0.3% to $3,014 per ounce, on pace for its third straight decline, as investors favored riskier assets.
Oil prices gained 1.5% after Trump threatened a 25% tariff on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44460897/oil-prices-rally-exxon-hits-16-week-highs-as-trump-vows-25-tariffs-on-any-country-buying-venezuelan-crude">countries importing Venezuelan crude.</a>
Crypto-related assets also rallied. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) climbed 2.7% to $88,400, while MicroStrategy Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSTR#NASDAQ">MSTR</a>) jumped 7.4% and Coinbase Global Inc. Beijing has reportedly put on hold the approval for BYD Co Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) to set up a manufacturing plant in Mexico amid fear of key technology leakage to the U.S.
What Happened: For Chinese automakers to manufacture overseas, they need approval from China&#8217;s commerce ministry. The ministry has not yet given the go-ahead due to concerns that Mexico could gain unrestricted access to BYD&#8217;s advanced technology and know-how, possibly granting the U.S. access to it, according to <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/36ae6f78-aadb-47bb-a5cd-ec69b420cbe1">a</a> report from the&nbsp;Financial Times&nbsp;on Thursday.
BYD, China&#8217;s largest electric-vehicle maker had previously announced plans in 2023 to establish&nbsp;an automobile plant in Mexico. The company also expressed intentions to manufacture cars in Brazil, Hungary, and Indonesia. The proposed Mexican plant is expected to generate 10,000 jobs and manufacture 150,000 vehicles per year.

But look deeper and some sectors of the auto industry may actually prosper from these tariffs.
Here are four car companies set to benefit from the tariff tit-for-tat. 
Market experts say disruption is the rule going forward across the globe – and with American and European automakers looking better going forward.
"Trump&#8217;s tariffs on steel, aluminum, and Chinese imports are placing production expense on American automakers, constricting margins for foreign-part-dependent companies," said Fei Chen, founder and CEO at Intellectia.AI, a financial intelligence company.
"Diversified Japanese and European automakers are less impacted. Chinese automakers, especially BYD and Geely, could benefit most as China doubles down on domestic EV manufacturing and export efforts, focusing on tariff-friendly markets in Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America," Chen said.
High tariff activity is causing automaker CEOs to alter their strategic planning, which casts additional clouds on auto stocks.
"Right now, the administration's tariffs are forcing automakers to examine their supply base to see what the easiest shifts may be to ease some of the burden on what components are produced where," said Brian Sponheimer, portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds. "For production of full product lines to be moved from Mexico or Canada to the US, the cost would be measured in billions, so automakers must choose whether that cost makes sense on a long-term basis given the potential for a tariff increase that may not be measured in multiple years."
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Auto Stocks To Test Drive In 2025</h2>

"Love it or hate it, they&#8217;re the EV champs," said Alex Black, chief marketing officer at EpicVIN. "Tariff-free importation of strategic battery components plus brand loyalty will sustain them."
Toyota (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TM#NYSE">TM</a>) This Japanese automaker should continue to thrive mainly due to its diverse supply base and strong hybrid offerings, making Toyota "tariff and rising production cost-resistant," Chen said.
BYD (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) The Chinese giant EV maker, with strong demand, is growing in Europe and Latin America. "They&#8217;re vertically integrated, so they have cost control superior to most," Black said.
Chen agreed. "As the automaker expanding beyond U.S. borders, it's escaping tariffs as it capitalizes on global EV demand." 
General Motors (NYSE: GM), a home grown legend, GM has based its domestic production in Detroit MI, and "now it's in prime position to be at the forefront of production locally and to combat the challenges that most other car manufacturers will face among these new regulations," said Lucas Barcelo, founder at Thrivin Life, an automation and analytics marketing company.
"GM has a good diversified supply chain, their domestic production will allow them to mitigate tariff impact, they have remained relatively financially strong over the years, and now we'll get to see how they adapt and innovate among big changes &#8211; this is their chance to shine," Barcelo added.
Used car specialists: Tariffs raise costs, making consumers less likely to purchase a new vehicle.
"This makes stocks that generate profits from the used vehicle market and through service and parts more likely to benefit on a relative basis," Sponheimer said. "We have long appreciated the dealer model that AutoNation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AN#NYSE">AN</a>) and Penske (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PAG#NYSE">PAG</a>) employ, driving over half of gross profits from parts and service."
Additionally, CarMax (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KMX#NYSE">KMX</a>) will likely experience an inflection in the addressable market for late-model used vehicles starting in 2H, Sponheimer added. "With more consumers looking to purchase used vehicles, the company should benefit from volatility in the new market."

When kicking tires on auto stocks, extend that research into auto aftermarket companies, which tend to get overlooked by investors.
"The US new vehicle market is in the range of 15-17 million units in a typical year, and the used market is 40 million in annual sales, and the total vehicle population in the United States is over 290 million vehicles," Sponheimer said.
He likes companies that service the larger, less cyclical total vehicle population, where the average vehicle age is nearing 13 years old.
"These vehicles require service, particularly as complexity has skyrocketed," Sponheimer noted. "So this automotive aftermarket produces outstanding business models with outstanding cash flow characteristics."
Additionally, the aftermarket tends to be an area where inflationary pressure can be passed along. "This is typically a fertile fishing ground for auto stocks," he added.

Tesla researcher&nbsp;Troy Teslike&nbsp;said the EV company would likely not deliver 500,000 vehicles in a quarter in 2025, citing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/25/02/43967968/tesla-unlikely-to-deliver-500000-evs-in-a-quarter-in-2025-says-researcher-doesnt-seem-possible-this-year-either" rel="noreferrer noopener">brand sentiment issues</a>.
On the flip side, Tesla chief Elon Musk&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/03/44269513/elon-musk-says-tesla-will-double-us-production-in-2-years-after-trump-backs-ev-giant-amid-stock-slump" rel="noreferrer noopener">has announced that</a> Tesla&nbsp;will double vehicle production in the U.S. within two years.
Recently, President Donald Trump transformed the White House to showcase Tesla vehicles in solidarity with&nbsp;his senior advisor and de facto head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk and his company. Trump also&nbsp;purchased a Tesla Model S Plaid.
Musk has acknowledged the challenges of running his business while working with DOGE amid a massive decline in Tesla&#8217;s stock price.&nbsp;
Tesla has faced protests against the company in the U.S. and Europe, with demonstrators criticizing Musk&#8217;s political activities.&nbsp;
According to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.statista.com/outlook/mmo/electric-vehicles/united-states" rel="noreferrer noopener">Statista</a>, the EV market in the U.S. could generate revenue of $104.7 billion in 2025 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.statista.com/outlook/mmo/electric-vehicles/united-states" rel="noreferrer noopener">and grow at an annual</a> rate (CAGR 2025-2029) of 10.53%, resulting in a projected market volume of $156.3 billion by 2029. Tesla&#8217;s upcoming earnings in April might be a good proxy for the recent reports on declining trends.
