The luxury market is at a critical turning point, with a clear divide emerging between legacy brands and aspirational players, according to Maurits Pot, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/07/39656549/exclusive-glp-1-weight-loss-drugs-could-become-a-trillion-dollar-market-predicts-tema-etfs-ceo">CEO of Tema ETFs</a>.
In an exclusive interview with Benzinga, Pot emphasized that high-end brands like Hermès International SA (OTCPK: HESAY) and Ferrari N.V. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RACE#NYSE">RACE</a>) — supported by loyal, affluent clients — are set to outperform, while more aspirational names such as LVMH-Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (OTCPK: LVMUY) and Burberry Group plc (OTCPK: BURBY) face greater vulnerability due to shifting consumer behavior and economic slowdowns in key markets like China and Europe.
&#8220;Luxury is going for a turnaround, and we're seeing a greater differentiation between true luxury and aspirational brands,&#8221; Pot said. 
With a number of companies underperforming — particularly LVMH, which recently reported disappointing results — Pot highlighted that these outcomes aren&#8217;t surprising given macroeconomic headwinds.
Pot stressed that investors should now focus on a clear divide between high-end brands and those catering to more discretionary spending.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">China&#8217;s Stimulus Won't Save Luxury Outlook</h3>
When discussing the impact of Chinese fiscal stimulus, Pot expressed skepticism. He indicated that while there was initial excitement around potential boosts for the market, the real beneficiaries of government spending are likely to be industries more central to China&#8217;s economic priorities.
&#8220;I think the luxury sector got a premature boost from the China stimulus,&#8221; Pot said, &#8220;but ultimately not a boost that is really warranted.&#8221; 
He stressed that the Chinese government will likely prioritize domestic consumption over high-end international luxury, raising doubts about a meaningful rebound in Chinese-driven demand.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">India: The Next Growth Driver For Luxury?</h3>
Another pressing topic was whether India could fill the gap left by slowing Chinese demand. Pot hinted that India's emerging middle class and growing economic power could be the next growth story.
&#8220;As China slows, does Indian luxury demand replace waning Chinese demand? That's a key question for 2025,&#8221; Pot added, pointing to India&#8217;s growing presence in the luxury space, with brands like Dior investing heavily in the market.
&#8220;2024 will likely be a tough year for the luxury sector,&#8221; Pot stated, &#8220;but I think there&#8217;s reason to believe that 2025 could look better, especially if India continues to emerge as a key luxury market,&#8221; he added.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariffs And The U.S. Election: Potential Impacts On Luxury</h3>
Looking ahead to the U.S. elections, Pot shared his thoughts on tariffs and their potential impact on luxury. While tariffs haven't directly targeted luxury goods yet, he noted the possibility of indirect consequences, especially for industrial goods like cars. 
&#8220;I think tariffs are going to focus on industrial output before consumer goods, but luxury could get caught up in it eventually,&#8221; he added.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Holding Cash For Dip-Buying Opportunities</h3>
Pot also shared insights into how Tema Luxury ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LUX#NYSE">LUX</a>) is positioned to weather the luxury sector shifts. 
&#8220;Nearly 20% of the portfolio is in cash,&#8221; he revealed, explaining that the fund remains cautious, particularly toward discretionary luxury, which has been hit harder than high-end, timeless brands like Ferrari, Hermès, and Compagnie Financiere Richemont SA (OTCPK: CFRUY). 
&#8220;We&#8217;re overweight on really high-end luxury, and underweight on more discretionary luxury,&#8221; he said.

Swiss watch exports have experienced a significant decline, particularly in China and Hong Kong, leading to a 52-week low for Swatch Group (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SWGNF#OTC">SWGNF</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SWGAY#OTC">SWGAY</a>).
What Happened: The exports of Swiss watches have recorded their most substantial drop since 2020, with a significant decrease in demand for high-end timepieces in key markets such as China and Hong Kong, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-18/swiss-watch-exports-plunge-as-china-and-hong-kong-demand-dries-up">reported</a> Bloomberg. 
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry revealed a 16% decrease in exports by value in March, amounting to 2 billion Swiss francs ($2.2 billion) from the previous year.
Shipments to China, the second-largest market for Swiss watches, fell by 42%, dropping below the levels seen in March 2020 when the industry came to a standstill due to pandemic lockdowns. Shipments to Hong Kong also plummeted by 44%.
Swatch Group, the manufacturer of Omega and Longines brands, saw its shares hit a fresh 52-week low on Thursday, dropping by about 1% in Zurich trading. Shares of Compagnie Financière Richemont SA&nbsp;(OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CFRUY#OTC">CFRUY</a>), the owner of Vacheron Constantin and Cartier, also fell by approximately 1%.
"The negative trend is even worse than we expected and the decline in China is really worrying and probably indicates that inventories in the region were once again too high," said Jean-Philippe Bertschy, an analyst at&nbsp;Vontobel&nbsp;in Switzerland.

Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton Brace For Sales Slump As China's Economic Turbulence Hits Luxury Market

China&#8217;s recent release of mixed economic data is weighing on U.S.-listed Chinese equities and sectors strongly linked to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/china">Chinese growth on Monday. </a>
China&#8217;s economy grew 6.3% YoY in Q2 2023, missing the market&#8217;s projected 7.3% rise. This marks a jump from Q1&#8217;s 4.5% increase.
June 2023 saw industrial production up 4.4% YoY, exceeding the estimated 2.7% boost. Conversely, retail sales grew only 3.1% YoY, its weakest performance since last December, falling short of the 3.2% forecast.

Commodities and Asian equities were the first assets affected by the data, followed by European luxury stocks and, then, U.S.-listed Chinese stocks.
Copper, a commodity that is extremely susceptible to the country&#8217;s growth momentum, fell 2.2% on the day, its worst session since May 10. Gold and silver, two precious metals, fell 0.1% and 0.5%, respectively, following a robust week of gains.
Tencent Music Entertainment Group (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TME#NYSE">TME</a>) was the weakest link among Chinese ADRs, falling 5%. PDD Holdings (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PDD#NASDAQ">PDD</a>) followed with a 3% decline, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro data</a>. However, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>) and JD.com, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JD#NYSE">JD</a>) managed to limit their losses, with 1.6% and 0.8% declines, respectively.
In the European luxury sector, companies including Hermès International Société (OTCPK: HESAY), and LVMH Moet Hennessy (OTCPK: LVMHF) experienced significant downward pressures, with declines exceeding 3%. The Swiss Compagnie Financière Richemont SA (OTCPK: CFRUY), announced lower-than-expected organic revenue growth in the first quarter, contributing to the stock&#8217;s 9% drop.
In the materials and mining sector, Vale S.A. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VALE#NYSE">VALE</a>), Rio Tinto Plc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIO#NYSE">RIO</a>), Southern Copper Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SCCO#NYSE">SCCO</a>), and Freeport-McMoran Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FCX#NYSE">FCX</a>) all suffered 2% to 2.7% drops.

For devotees, there are certain watches that are coveted and collected. Some people start this passion by chance, inheriting a watch from a family member&nbsp;or seeing a watch worn by their favorite celebrity or movie character.

1. Paul Newman&rsquo;s Rolex Daytona, Ref. 6239

This list starts with a love story: In 1968, Joanne Woodward, Paul Newman&rsquo;s wife, bought a Rolex Daytona, Ref. 6239 watch from Tiffany&rsquo;s and had it inscribed on the back with&nbsp;&ldquo;Drive Carefully Me&rdquo;&nbsp;&mdash; possibly in reference the movie, &ldquo;Winning,&rdquo; the couple was making in which Newman portrayed a racecar driver. (Originally developed in 1963 to meet the demands professional racecar drivers,&nbsp;the Daytona is in reference to the racetrack in Florida.)
Newman became both hooked on racing and the watch, which he wore continuously until the mid-&lsquo;80s.
When Newman passed away, collectors started to haunt auction houses or watch dealers to see if it it had come onto the market.&nbsp;Turns out, Newman gave it to his daughter Nell Newman&rsquo;s then-boyfriend&nbsp;James Cox as a gift in 1984. After the elder Newman died, Cox&nbsp;sold it at auction in 2017 through Phillips New York auction house. According to a <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/hylabauer/2017/10/26/paul-newmans-paul-newman-daytona-sells-for-15-5-million-a-record-for-a-wristwatch-at-auction/?sh=2657281a5313">Forbes article</a>, a portion of the proceeds go to the Nell Newman Foundation, continuing in the spirit of Paul Newman, who was known for his philanthropy.

Developed by Parisian jeweler Louis Cartier in 1917, the Tank watch has become one of the most recognizable &mdash; and sought after &mdash; Cartier watch designs.
The inspiration? A Renault tank Cartier had seen in used in France during World War I. Since the first Tank watch, Cartier (the company) has created offshoots of the Tank:&nbsp;the Cartier website lists 83 models.
What makes the watch a Tank are its features: its lateral brancards, the Roman numeral dial, chemin-de-fer chapter ring, sword-shaped blue steel hands and a winding crown topped with sapphire cabochon.
Princess Diana, Jacqueline Onassis and Yves Saint Laurent were known for their Tank watches, and today&rsquo;s notable fans include Mick Jagger, former first lady Michelle Obama, and actors Rami Malek and Leon Bridges.

3. Jaegar-LeCoultre 101 Reine

For her coronation in 1953, Queen Elizabeth II wore a Jaegar-LeCoultre 101 Reine. A gift from Vincent Auriol, the then President of France, its slim and elegant look was the perfect foil to the really big jewelry the Queen was wearing that day. (And during the 1950s, it was unseemly for a woman to look at her watch for the time, so this way, during the actual coronation when the Queen was wondering, &ldquo;When is the going to end? Unlike Wimbledon, which can apparently bear the brunt of financial losses, French Open bosses admitted their tournament could face losses of $284 million if the tournament was not played this year. And unlike Wimbledon which&nbsp;simply cannot be played after late-summer, September in Paris is even warmer than in May.
