Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reiterated on Tuesday that policymakers are in no "hurry" to adjust interest rates, citing lingering inflation pressures despite significant progress toward the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s"> Fed's 2% inflation goal.</a>



Speaking before the Senate Banking Committee in Washington, Powell described the economic landscape as one where "the economy is strong overall." with a labor market that has cooled from its overheated state but remains resilient.



Over the past four months, payroll job gains averaged 189,000 per month, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4% in January. Powell indicated that "the labor market is not a source of significant inflationary pressures."



On inflation, Powell highlighted a notable decline over the past two years but stressed that "inflation remains somewhat elevated."



The latest Personal Consumption Expenditures price index showed a 2.6% year-over-year increase as of December, with core PCE rising 2.8%, excluding volatile food and energy costs. 



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Powell Stresses Caution In Interest Rate Policy</h3>



Since September, the Federal Open Market Committee has lowered the policy rate by a full percentage point from its peak. 



Powell described this shift as "appropriate in light of the progress on inflation and the cooling in the labor market."



Despite these moves, Powell reiterated that "we do not need to be in a hurry to adjust our policy stance." 



He stated that reducing interest rates &#8220;too fast or too much&#8221; could derail progress on inflation, while moving too slowly or too little "could unduly weaken economic activity and employment."



Going forward, the Fed will continue to remain data dependent, before making further policy adjustments.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Powell Pushes Back Recession Concerns, Refrains From Tariff Judgement</h3>



During the Q&amp;A session, Powell pushed back against recession risks and reiterated the broader strength of the economy. 



Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) questioned the Fed's influence over long-term bond yields, to which Powell responded, "We have some influence, but mostly not." 



The Fed Chair indicated that long-term rates are driven by future short-term rate expectations, inflation risks, and the budget deficit—factors beyond the Fed's direct control. 



When asked if a president could remove a Federal Reserve Board member, Powell said, "It's not allowed under the law."



Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN) asked Powell if the neutral rate — the point where interest rates neither boost nor slow the economy — has risen.



&#8220;The neutral rate will have risen meaningfully," Powell said.



The chairman highlighted that concerns over labor market weakness and inflation have faded. Powell said that many of his colleagues also believe the neutral rate has moved higher, a shift from its historically low pre-pandemic levels.



On trade policy, Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) referenced Powell's 2018 statement that "countries that have remained open to trade, that have not erected barriers, including tariffs, have grown faster and achieved higher incomes." 



Powell stood by that view but refrained from commenting on specific trade policies, including President Donald Trump's tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico.

Wharton finance professor Jeremy Siegel, in a podcast, forecasted that the stock market's response would be entirely contingent on the duration of the tariffs. &#8220;As long as these tariffs are in effect and are not lowered, it&#8217;s very hard to see the stock market going up," stated Siegel.

The NIH action will "devastate critical public health research at universities and research institutions," the lawsuit claims.



The complaint alleges that the agency's action will result in layoffs, suspension of clinical trials, disruption of ongoing research programs, and laboratory closures.



Judge Angel Kelley of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts <a target="_blank" href="https://fingfx.thomsonreuters.com/gfx/legaldocs/gdpzkzwrwvw/02102025nih_order.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">issued</a> a temporary restraining order asking the 22 states to file a status report in 24 hours and again every two weeks to confirm the regular disbursement of the funds. A group of investors led by the world's richest person Elon Musk has made a $97.4-billion offer to acquire control of OpenAI, the nonprofit AI giant Musk once co-founded.



What Happened: Musk, who has sued OpenAI as the company attempts to transition to a for-profit structure, previously founded the company with Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and several other individuals.



Musk put in capital to the company before leaving in 2018 over a disagreement regarding its direction. 



The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/elon-musk-openai-bid-4af12827?mod=latest_headlines">reports </a>Monday that Musk is leading a group bidding $97.4-billion to take control of the nonprofit that controls OpenAI.



"It's time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was," Musk said in a statement provided by his attorney Marc Toberoff. &#8220;We will make sure that happens."



Toberoff told the Wall Street Journal the bid for the nonprofit that controls OpenAI was submitted to OpenAI's board of directors Monday.



After Musk left, the company created a for-profit subsidiary that helped the company raise money from other investors including Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>).



Altman is pushing to make OpenAI a for-profit company, which could give him an opportunity for an equity stake in the company and increase his wealth.



Among the investors in the bid for OpenAI control include Musk's AI company xAI, Valor Equity Partners, Vy Capital, 8VC, Baron Capital and Atreides Management.



Altman appeared to dismiss the buyout offer in a tweet Monday. 



&#8220;No thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want,&#8221; Altman <a href="https://x.com/sama/status/1889059531625464090">tweeted</a>.

Why It's Important: News of the bid has raised questions to what this could mean for Altman's push for a for-profit company and whether xAI and OpenAI could be combined if the bid goes through.



Toberoff said Musk and the investor group are prepared to match higher bids in the process to value the nonprofit company.



"If Sam Altman and the present OpenAI Inc. Board of Directors are intent on becoming a fully for-profit corporation, it is vital that the charity be fairly compensated for what its leadership is taking away from it: control over the most transformative technology of our time," Toberoff said.



Musk and Altman have battled publicly in recent months. Musk recently said Altman and other investors in Project Stargate didn't have the funds for their announced venture.



OpenAI was<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41149788/openai-valuation-soars-to-157b-in-latest-funding-round"> valued at $157 billion </a>in a funding round in October 2024. A recent report said OpenAI was also considering a funding round that could value the company at $300 billion.



Musk's xAI <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42022077/elon-musks-xai-seeks-6b-at-50b-valuation-to-acquire-100k-nvidia-chips-for-memphis-data-center">was valued at </a>$50 billion in November 2024.



Musk is the world's richest person, with wealth of $402 billion, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/billionaires/">Bloomberg</a>. It is unknown how much of his personal fortune Musk put into the bid and what the source of his funds were. Musk previously sold a portion of his Tesla shares to help fund his $44-billion acquisition of Twitter in 2022.

Elon Musk Co-Founded OpenAI, Now He's Bidding $97.4B To Take Back The Company

Investors are recalibrating their expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts after an unexpected <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/inflation">surge in consumer inflation</a>.



Fed futures now reflect just 36 basis points of cumulative rate cuts by year-end. This implies only a 50% probability of two reductions, according to CME FedWatch tool.



Markets increasingly see just one rate cut as the most likely scenario, versus the two-cut path indicated in December.



Betting odds tracked by the CFTC-regulated Kalshi currently assign a 25% probability to two rate cuts. The chances of one cut or no cut at all stand at 22% and 17%, respectively.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Inflation Concerns Resurface</h3>



The University of Michigan&#8217;s latest consumer sentiment survey triggered fresh alarm, showing a sharp jump in inflation expectations that surprised analysts. 



The one-year inflation expectation surged to 4.3%, rising one full percentage point from last month and reaching its highest level since November 2023.



&#8220;Many consumers seem concerned that high inflation will return within the next year,&#8221; the University of Michigan stated in its report.



President Donald Trump pledged to raise tariffs on major U.S. trading partners, on top of a 25% tariff on aluminum and steel imports.



The U.S. five-year breakeven inflation rate—a key gauge of market-based expected inflation—rose to 2.59% on Monday. That&#8217;s up from 1.89% in September 2024, according to TradingView data.



This suggests investors anticipate inflation to average well above the Fed's 2% target over the next five years.



&#8220;Given the considerable policy uncertainty caused by the return of global trade protectionism and the return of mercantilism among the G-7 nations, it is not certain that inflation expectations will remain well anchored,&#8221; said Joseph Brusuelas, economist at RSM US LLP. 



&#8220;The sudden jump in inflation expectations isn't a coincidence. Trump&#8217;s tariff threats toward Canada, Mexico, China, and the EU are fueling inflation concerns. Despite stocks holding near record highs, gold is rallying, and TIPS have outperformed Treasuries for the past month—clear signs that investors are positioning for inflation,&#8221; said analyst Michael Gayed, CFA.



Nonfarm payrolls rose by 143,000 in January, slightly below consensus due to weather disruptions, but revisions from previous months added 100,000 jobs. The unemployment rate unexpectedly dropped to 4.1%, while wage growth accelerated.



&#8220;The labor market appears to have stabilized around full employment, reinforcing our view that the Fed's rate-cutting cycle is over,&#8221; said Bank of America economist Aditya Bhave.



Goldman Sachs economists echoed this sentiment. Markets still underprice the inflationary impact of tariffs, indicating that investors may not be fully accounting for persistent price pressures in their rate forecasts.



&#8220;Friday's jobs report reinforced the argument that economy is in a place that can allow the Fed to be patient until it has better confidence in underlying disinflation and better clarity into (trade and fiscal) policy outcomes,&#8221; wrote Goldman Sachs economists.



Inflation hedges have delivered strong gains over the past month. The iShares TIPS Bond ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TIP#NYSE">TIP</a>) is up nearly 3%; the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) has surged 9%.

Traders Rethink Interest-Rate Path As Inflation Concerns Resume: 'Fed's Rate-Cutting Cycle Is Over,' Economist Says

Oil prices climbed Monday, marking their strongest one-day surge in nearly a month, as geopolitical risks intensified following threats of a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/gaza">ceasefire breakdown in Gaza.</a>



West Texas Intermediate crude futures jumped 1.8% to $71.90 per barrel by 2:30 p.m. ET, while Brent crude advanced 1.6% to $76.40 per barrel. The rally came as investors weighed the potential for renewed instability in the Middle East, a region responsible for nearly one-third of global oil production.



U.S. energy stocks also gained traction, with the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) rising 2%, while oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) and Chevron Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) climbed 1.6% and 0.8%, respectively.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ceasefire At Risk: Hamas Accuses Israel Of Violations</h3>



Concerns over escalating conflict in Gaza grew after Hamas announced it would halt hostage releases, citing Israel's alleged failure to uphold the terms of the ceasefire.



Two Egyptian security sources told Reuters that mediators now fear a collapse in the deal, which was intended to facilitate a phased exchange of hostages and prisoners.



Since the agreement took effect in early January, Hamas has freed 18 captives, including dual U.S.-Israeli citizen Keith Siegel, in exchange for more than 730 Palestinian prisoners.



Yet, the next scheduled swap — three Israeli hostages for hundreds of Palestinian detainees — has now been delayed.



The fragile six-week ceasefire, which began in mid-January, was designed to facilitate the release by Hamas of Israeli hostages captured in its Oct. 7 attack in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trump's Middle East Strategy: What's Next For Gaza?</h3>



President Donald Trump, less than a month into his second term, has sent global shockwaves with his stance on Gaza. Over the weekend, he floated the idea of U.S. ownership of the war-ravaged enclave, describing it as a potential economic hub.



Speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump suggested that Gaza could be bought and owned with assistance from regional partners.



"I&#8217;m committed to buying and owning Gaza&#8230;We&#8217;ll make it into a very good site for future development,&#8221; he said.



Last week, in a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump suggested the United States assume control of the Gaza Strip. His proposal included relocating the roughly 2 million Palestinian residents to nearby nations like Egypt and Jordan, envisioning Gaza's transformation into the &#8220;Riviera of the Middle East.&#8221;



Trump said that Palestinians displaced from Gaza would not have the right to return under his proposal. 



Trump's suggestion sparked significant international criticism. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres cautioned against any measures that could be interpreted as ethnic cleansing.



Egypt and Jordan have firmly rejected the idea of resettling Palestinians from Gaza, citing concerns over regional stability and potential demographic shifts.
