China&#8217;s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/smartphones" rel="noreferrer noopener">smartphone market</a> is set for a significant rebound in the second quarter of 2025, with both Huawei Technologies and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) leading the charge in year-on-year growth, according to preliminary figures from Counterpoint Research.
Huawei is expected to post the highest growth among <a target="_blank" href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/insight/china-smartphone-market-q2-2025/" rel="noreferrer noopener">major brands</a>, potentially taking the top spot in the Chinese market in the second quarter.
Ivan Lam, Senior Research Analyst at Counterpoint Research, notes that Huawei is &#8220;still riding high on the loyalty of its core users, who are replacing their old phones with new Huawei releases.&#8221;

Apple also saw an increase in sales during May, primarily driven by promotional discounts for the iPhone 16 series, especially the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Counterpoint Research Associate Director Ethan Qi stated that &#8220;Apple&#8217;s May discounts for iPhones bore fruit, coming a week ahead of the 618 shopping festival.&#8221;

Despite the positive outlook for China, the global smartphone market faces some headwinds. Counterpoint Research lowered its 2025 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst-color/25/06/45930835/iphone-sales-rebound-in-china-but-apples-next-move-could-be-risky" rel="noreferrer noopener">global smartphone shipment growth</a> forecast to 1.9% from 4.2%, citing tariff uncertainties under the Trump administration.
Similarly, IDC cut its 2025 global growth outlook to 0.6% from 2.3%, though it projects China&#8217;s shipments to rise 3% thanks to government subsidies.
However, IDC expects Apple&#8217;s global shipments to fall 1.9% in 2025 amid Huawei competition, economic headwinds, and a lack of local incentives.
U.S. smartphone growth could also slow to 1.9% in 2025 from 3.3% in 2017, as higher tariff prices weigh on demand.

Meta's Growth Sizzles, But Wait For A Pullback Before Buying In

Cadence Design Systems shares are trading higher after the U.S. Department of Commerce rescinded China export restrictions.

Shares of chip design firms Cadence Design Systems Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CDNS#NASDAQ">CDNS</a>) and Synopsys Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNPS#NASDAQ">SNPS</a>) are rising Thursday after the U.S. Department of Commerce rescinded <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/07/n46238059/synopsys-issues-statement-in-connection-to-the-lifting-of-recent-u-s-export-restrictions-related-t">China export restrictions</a>.
What Happened: Cadence Design and Synopsys announced in separate statements that the Bureau of Industry and Security of the Commerce Department informed the companies that export restrictions related to China that were put in place in May have been rescinded, effective immediately. 
The Department of Commerce informed Cadence and Synopsys in late May that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/05/45657567/whats-going-on-with-synopsys-cadence-design-stocks-wednesday">licenses would be required</a> for exports of electronic design automation software and technology to China. The move was a part of the Trump Administration&#8217;s efforts to restrict China from accessing advanced chips and came after the government<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/04/44828742/nvidia-stock-is-tumbling-after-hours-heres-why"> put restrictions</a> on Nvidia and AMD citing national security risks related to supercomputers. 
&#8220;Cadence is in the process of restoring access to EDA Software and Technology for its affected customers in accordance with these updated U.S. export regulations,&#8221; the company said on Thursday. 
Synopsys also announced in a statement that it was working to restore access to the restricted products. The company noted that it&#8217;s continuing to assess the impact of China export restrictions on its financial results. 
Siemens, which is based in Germany but has U.S. subsidiaries, also announced that it was informed of the lifting of restrictions. Cadence Design, Synopsys and Siemens are three of the biggest players in the semiconductor design software space.
Price Action: At the time of publication, Cadence Design shares were up 4.1% at $323.69 and Synopsys shares were up 3.6% at $541.73, according to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>.

Financials mirror the fall. In its<a href="https://ir.tesla.com/_flysystem/s3/sec/000162828025018851/tsla-20250422-gen.pdf"> Q1 earnings report</a> in April, Tesla said net income slumped 71%, automotive revenue slid 20%, and free cash flow turned positive, reaching $664 million.
"Tesla was a great brand," Galloway said. He called the downturn, "one of the greatest brand destruction." He added, "the rivers have reversed, and the tide has turned entirely against them," referring to Musk's political alignment and its impact on Tesla's reputation.&nbsp;
Musk steered almost $300 million to President Donald Trump–aligned committees while advising the White House's Department of Government Efficiency, angering early EV adopters who skew liberal. "3/4 of Republicans would never consider buying an EV," Galloway said. "He's cozied up to the people who aren't interested in EVs."
Pushback soon spilled onto the streets. A March fire at a Tesla showroom in Rome destroyed 17 cars. Activists organized "Tesla Takedown" rallies in Berlin, Stockholm and San Francisco in April. Tesla's global sustainability lead canceled a Rome conference appearance over security concerns as vandalism cases multiplied.

He said his round-the-clock shift would center on X, xAI, Tesla and a May 27 Starship launch.
During last month's Qatar Economic Forum, Musk <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBwF4RlT8Vg&amp;t=3s">said</a> he would "do a lot less" political spending because "I think I've done enough." He added that he planned to stay <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/topics/25/06/45950101/forget-tesla-chinas-41000-cybertruck-clone-comes-with-steer-by-wire-adaptive-chassis-and-a-wheel-that-moves-side-to-side">Tesla's</a> CEO for at least five years.
