Molson Coors (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tap#NYSE">TAP</a>) is scheduled to report fourth-quarter 2011 results tomorrow, February 16, before the opening bell. Coors Light recently passed Budweiser as the number two best-selling beer in the U.S. And the brewer's MillerCoors venture said it would acquire Crispin Cider Company, offering it a share in the fast-growing hard cider market. But will investors get some good news from the earnings report?

Analysts on average predict that the company will post per-share earnings that are 7.0% higher than a year ago to $0.71 for the quarter, and that revenue totaled $927.6 million. That would be a year-over-year revenue increase of 11.1%. That EPS estimate is a penny higher than 60 days ago. But note that the brewer's per-share earnings fell short of consensus estimates in the past four quarters -- by 8.8% in the third quarter.

Looking back to the third quarter, Molson Coors said its net income decreased 11.2% year over year to $212.4 million, or $1.14 per diluted share. Net sales increased 9.1% to $954.4 million. The company attributed the disappointing EPS results in part to unemployment among core beer consumers and significant commodity inflation.

For the full year, the consensus forecast calls for $3.51 per share earnings on revenue of $3.5 billion. That compares to $3.56 per share and $3.3 billion last year. In this case, the EPS estimate is the same as 60 days ago.

The Company

Molson Coors Brewing Company, one of the world's largest beer brewers, was formed in 2005 by the merger of Adolph Coors Company and Molson. The company also brews or distributes products under license from various third parties, including Heineken, Corona, Miller, Leinenkugel and many others. The company is headquartered in Denver, and it is an S&amp;P 500 component with a market cap of $7.9 billion.

Competitors include Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bud#NYSE">BUD</a>), Boston Beer (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sam#NYSE">SAM</a>) and Companhia de Bebidas das Americas AmBev (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/abv#NYSE">ABV</a>). Anheuser-Busch reports on March 8 and Boston Beer on February 22. Analysts expect to see EPS growth for the fourth quarter and the full year from both of them.

During the three months that ended in December, Molson Coors said it repurchased 6.3 million shares for $271 million as part of its ongoing buyback program. Its Tenth and Blake division continued its so-called craft beer strategy to take on Boston Beer. But the stock also fell to a 52-week low.

Performance

The P/E ratio is less than the industry average, but so is the company's operating margin. The dividend yield is 2.9% and the return on equity is only 7.9%. Short interest is 1.4% of the float, but out of nine analysts polled who follow the stock, only two currently recommend buying it. Their mean price target on the shares is hardly any higher than the current share price.

Shares have traded mostly between $43 and $45 since mid December. The 50-day moving average crossed above the 200-day moving average last week. The share price is about the same as it was both at the beginning of this year as well as a year ago. The 52-week range is $37.99 and $49.58. The stock has underperformed Anheuser-Busch and Boston Beer, as well as the broader markets, over the past six months.

Molson Coors Earnings Preview: EPS and Sales Growth Expected

Mattel (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/mat#NYSE">MAT</a>), the company behind the Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price and American Girl brands, is scheduled to report its third-quarter 2011 results tomorrow, October 14. The El Segundo, Calif.-based toymaker saw increased options activity this morning, and it remains under the cloud of a lost lawsuit ruling over the rights to use Bratz dolls, though the company is appealing the ruling.

Analysts on average predict that Mattel will report earnings of $0.86 per share, up from $0.77 per share in the same quarter of last year. That EPS estimate is unchanged from 60 days ago. And note that per-share earnings have not fallen short of consensus estimates in the past four quarters.

The forecast also calls for the company to post revenues of $1.9 billion, which would be a 7.6% increase from a year ago. Looking ahead to the current quarter, which will include the holiday season, analysts so far are looking for only 4.9% year-over-year growth in revenues. And the forecast for the full year so far calls for revenues up 7.9% from a year ago, with per-share earnings 13.1% higher.

The Company

Mattel designs, manufactures and markets such products as fashion dolls and accessories, toy vehicles, play sets, games and puzzles, as well as publishing activity books and magazines. The company offers its products to retailers such as toy stores and department stores, as well as to wholesalers, distributors, and via the Internet. Mattel was founded in 1945 and it now has a market cap of $9.6 billion.

During the three months that ended in September, the company appealed the Bratz ruling, as mentioned above. The company also said that popularity of Cars 2-related products drove its strong second-quarter results, and Elliot Handler, one of Mattel's cofounders and the creator of Hot Wheels, passed away at 95.

Performance

The company has a long-term earnings per share growth forecast of 12.9% and a return of equity of 28.0%. The P/E ratio is higher than the industry average, but so is the operating margin. Thirteen of 17 analysts following the stock rate it a Buy or Strong Buy, and they have a mean price target of $32.07 per share.

At $27.61, the share price is more than 13% higher than at the beginning of the year; it is up more than 6% in the past week. Shares are trading near the 52-week high and are well above the 50-day and 200-day moving averages. The stock has outperformed competitor Hasbro (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/has#NYSE">HAS</a>) and the broader markets over the past six months.

Mattel Earnings Preview: Solid Results Expected

Forgetting about mid-cap stocks is pretty easy to do. That doesn't mean it's wise, nor does it mean it's excusable to forget about mid-cap ETFs as this is one corner of the ETF universe that has potential to be a growth area in the coming years. 

This actually may prove to be a good time for investors to avail themselves of mid-caps with small-caps being thrown out with the bathwater and large-caps still being targeted by eager sellers. And that means it could be time to forgo stock-picking in the mid-cap universe and rely ETFs to generate some alpha.

Here are some mid-cap ETFs your broker probably forgot about.

1) Guggenheim Mid-Cap Core ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cza#NYSE">CZA</a>):
Home to 101 stocks and a 0.6% expense ratio, CZA definitely fits the bill as a mid-cap ETF that doesn't grab a lot of attention. CZA has about $17.5 million in assets under management and offers an attractive risk/reward here as support at $25 looks firm. Trading around $27, CZA could run back to $33 if the market cooperates. 

This ETF's biggest problem is an 18% allocation to financials. Tech gets a similar weight while energy, consumer staples and industrials are all above 10% of the fund's weight.

2) iShares Morningstar Mid Value Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/jki#NYSE">JKI</a>):
JKI is another under-the-radar mid-cap play, though this iShares offering boasts almost $93.5 million in AUM with an expense ratio of 0.3%. JKI is home to over 170 stocks, none of which gets an allocation greater than 1.62%. That kind of diversity can prove beneficial in mid-cap ETFs, but JKI shares something in common with CZA: Financials are its highest sector weight at 20.5%.

Utilities account for over 17% of JKI's weight while consumer cyclicals and staples also receive double-digit allocations. Trading around $68, bail on JKI if it falls below $62, but the upside is a run to $80.

3) SPDR S&amp;P International Mid-Cap ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/mdd#NYSE">MDD</a>):
With an expense ratio of 0.45% and almost $39 million in AUM, MDD focuses on stocks with market caps of $2 billion to $5 billion. In fact, it focuses on a lot of that stocks in that market cap range, about 485 to be precise. At least financials aren't the biggest sector (they're second). Industrials are MDD's top sector allocation and consumer discretionary and materials names both account for nearly 13% of MDD's weight.

MDD is international, but not emerging markets focused. Japan, the U.K. and Canada account more than half of the fund's country weight and that means this one might be best saved for later.

4) WisdomTree MidCap Earnings Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ezm#NYSE">EZM</a>):
If you thought MDD held a lot of stocks, check out EZM, which is home to over 600 stocks. With an expense ratio of 0.38%, EZM, is an all U.S. fund, but that's not so bad because EZM might boast more potential takeover targets than any other member of this list. Consumer discretionary, financials, industrial and information technology are the top four sector weights in that order. Trading $50, EZM's chart is somewhat attractive here with support firm at $46 and the potential for a run back to $60.

Four Mid-Cap ETFs Your Broker Forgot To Mention

As of Monday this week (9/27/10), much of what used to be known as Claymore was renamed Guggenheim.  It was nearly a year ago (10/15/09) Guggenheim Partners announced the acquisition of Claymore, with Claymore effectively becoming the retail division of Guggenheim.  As part of the ongoing integration and rebranding, the Claymore website has been relaunched with the new web address: <a href="http://www.guggenheimfunds.com/" target="_blank">http://www.guggenheimfunds.com/</a>.
The announcement includes the following naming changes:
<ul>
<li>Claymore Securities, Inc. to Guggenheim Funds Distributors, Inc.</li>
<li>Claymore Advisors, LLC to Guggenheim Funds Investment Advisors, LLC</li>
<li>Claymore Group Inc. to Guggenheim Funds Services Group, Inc.</li>
<li>32 Claymore ETFs to Guggenheim ETFs (listed below)</li>
</ul>
Perhaps what is more interesting about this announcement is what didn't have their names changed to Guggenheim:  Claymore UITs, CEFs, six ETFs, and an ETN.  The Claymore UIT names will likely be changed when the subsequent series are issued.  The plans for the remaining securities are unclear.
Two ETFs that did not have their names changed are Claymore U.S. Capital Markets Micro-Term Fixed Income (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/ulq#">ULQ</a>) and Claymore U.S. Capital Markets Bond (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/ubd#">UBD</a>).  Both products have <a href="http://investwithanedge.com/market-maker-home-edition" target="_blank">failed to attract any meaningful assets</a> in the two and a half years they have been on the market and should have been part of the <a href="http://investwithanedge.com/claymore-closing-four-etfs-exb-rob-cro-and-iro" target="_blank">closures announced in August</a>.
However, it now appears these products are destined for a makeover like we saw with the <a href="http://investwithanedge.com/wmcr-trying-to-cheat-deathwatch" target="_blank">transformation of the Claymore/Sabrient Stealth ETF</a> (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/sth#">STH</a>) into the Wilshire Micro-Cap ETF (WMCR).  They were able to announce a “new” ETF that wasn't really new and stated that the cost benefits of not having to close one fund and open another was behind the approach.  I expect ULQ and UBD will undergo a similar fate, and the name change to Guggenheim will be accompanied by claims of being “new” products while mysteriously having a multi-year track record.
The <a href="http://investwithanedge.com/claymore-introduces-3-me-too-etf-clones" target="_blank">four Claymore Wilshire ETFs</a> (WXSP, WFVK, WMCR, and WREI) were not renamed to Guggenheim because Claymore was evidently never part of their name to begin with.  According to the <a href="http://www.guggenheimfunds.com/etf/product-list" target="_blank">ETF list on the new Guggenheim website</a>, these four ETFs carry only the Wilshire brand name.
Last is the Claymore CEF Index-Linked GS Connect ETN (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/gce#">GCE</a>), a <a href="http://investwithanedge.com/etf-deathwatch-for-september-2010" target="_blank">regular on ETF Deathwatch</a>, which apparently no one wants to claim.  It is the only ETP that I am aware of without a summary page posted somewhere on the internet.  It was nowhere to be found at the old Claymore site, it is not on the new Guggenheim site, and is not on the GS Connect site.  It is a candidate for closure, but first someone needs to claim ownership.

December 11, 2009 will be the last day of trading for Claymore/Morningstar Manufacturing Super Sector Index ETF (MZG), Claymore/Morningstar Information Super Sector Index ETF (MZN), Claymore/Morningstar Services Super Sector Index ETF (MZO), and Claymore U.S.-1 – The Capital Markets Index ETF (UEM).
My suggestion to anyone who holds these funds is to sell your shares before the closure and liquidation process begins.  All have extremely low activity, including many days of <a href="http://investwithanedge.com/47-etps-had-zero-volume-friday" target="_blank">zero volume</a>.  Use a limit order and give it a few days to fill.  If you wait until the last day, don’t be surprised to find no bids anywhere near a fair price.
All four of these ETFs were identified in the <a href="http://investwithanedge.com/etf-deathwatch-november-2009" target="_blank">current issue of ETF Deathwatch</a> (and almost every prior issue) with MZO #4, MZN #11, UBG #33, and MZG at #52.  Claymore is very familiar with the ETF closure process having shut down 13 of them on prior occasions.
Strangely, Claymore has other products that are in just as bad as shape as these.  Claymore ETFs and ETNs currently on ETF Deathwatch, but which somehow survived the <a href="http://claymore.com/common/DisplayLiterature.aspx?ID=f435cffa-4b0e-4435-a607-21c80aa5f625" target="_blank">November 25 announcement</a>, include the following:

<li>Claymore/BNY Mellon International Small Cap LDRs (XGC)</li>

A Claymore spokesman informed me that some of the funds are approaching their three-year anniversary and are expected to receive a good rating from Morningstar at that time.  They hope assets will start moving in once the coveted Morningstar rating is received.  This is supposedly why OTP, DEF, and some others were spared the axe at this time.
All of the products listed above have pathetic trading volume and probably have asset levels that make them unprofitable. I pointed out back in March that some Claymore ETFs like UBD <a href="http://investwithanedge.com/market-maker-home-edition" target="_blank">do not have market makers</a> and have bid/ask spreads in excess of 100%.  UBD was featured again in my <a href="http://investwithanedge.com/dead-etf-walking" target="_blank">Dead ETF Walking</a> article.  Claymore performed an <a href="http://investwithanedge.com/extreme-makeover-etf-edition" target="_blank">extreme makeover on XGC</a> back in July.  So far no one has fallen for that trick and it is still on Deathwatch.
Claymore has brought many great ETFs to market.  This does not mean they are successful ETFs.  I suggest you avoid the products listed above.
