Major indexes are higher, rebounding from recent weakness as investors assess delays on some Mexico and Canada tariffs.

All three major indices were red in Friday&#8217;s midday trading, with the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100 down 1% and 1.24%, respectively, and on track for their worst weeks since September 2024. The Nasdaq fell into correction territory on Friday after dropping more than 10% below<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44196560/bessent-describes-economic-detox-period-as-us-shifts-to-trump-policies"> its peak in February. </a>
Tariff announcements and uncertainty roiled markets throughout the week. President Donald Trump on Thursday suspended <a href="http://Namrata Sen Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Retaliates With 25% Tariffs On US Goods Amid Escalating Trade War (CORRECTED) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a 25% tariff on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods. This decision comes as a direct response to the 25% tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Canadian goods, as reported by BNN Bloomberg. 3/7/2025, 4:05 AM">all tariffs</a> on products covered by the North American trade agreement until April 2, though it had little effect on market volatility.

"The stock market is moving in lockstep with tariff headlines, and that is likely to keep volatility very elevated for the foreseeable future, as the market does not like uncertainty," said Glen Smith, chief investment officer at GDS Wealth Management, per CNBC. 
"While we expect the market to find its footing and recover from the tariff-driven selloff, investors should brace for continued choppiness until these uncertainties clear," Smith added. 
The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note dipped to the 4.23% mark on Friday after a softer-than-expected February <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44189725/unemployment-rate-ticks-higher-in-february-us-economy-adds-fewer-jobs-than-expected">jobs report</a> added to concerns of a slowing U.S. economy. The BLS nonfarm payrolls report showed the U.S. added 151,000 jobs in February, below market expectations of 160,000, as tracked by Trading Economics. The unemployment rate ticked unexpectedly higher to 4.1%, above the 4.0% expected. 
The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rose 0.6% to $90.94. 
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) fell back below $90,000 after President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve on Thursday. The President&#8217;s crypto summit will be held at the White House later on Friday with the potential for additional catalysts for cryptocurrencies.
Wall Street now looks ahead to next week&#8217;s inflation data, JOLTS job openings report and preliminary figures for the Michigan consumer sentiment index.

Nasdaq Falls Into Correction As Tariffs Roil Wall Street: What's Moving Markets Friday?

All three major indices remain in the red midday Thursday, after trimming earlier losses which saw the Dow Jones down more than 600 points at session lows. The major averages lost more than 2% this week as U.S. tariffs on Canadian, Mexican and Chinese imports took effect and trade partners responded with retaliatory <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/forex/25/03/44161314/us-stocks-likely-to-open-lower-after-wednesdays-blip-be-patient-but-be-ready-to-act-says-analyst-as-market-uncertainties-can-create-opportunities">levies on U.S. goods. </a>
Investors awaited clarity on President Donald Trump&#8217;s trade policies after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told CNBC the president is likely to allow exemptions for more than just carmakers.
Lutnick also stated that Mexico and Canada might avoid reciprocal tariffs planned for April if they make sufficient progress in curbing the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. Following Lutnick&#8217;s remarks, stocks rebounded from their lows during Thursday&#8217;s trading session.

Traders awaited further <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44143647/trump-considering-tariff-relief-for-mexico-canada-commerce-secretary-lutnick-says">developments on trade policy</a> after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick appeared on Bloomberg Television on Wednesday. Lutnick said President Donald Trump would likely make a decision on possible tariff relief for Mexico and Canada Wednesday afternoon.

The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note was at 4.23% on Wednesday, trimming declines from the morning after expansion in the services sector, reflected by the ISM PMI easing concerns on lower growth. However, yields remained near four-month lows touched earlier in the week.  The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) fell 0.24%.  
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) was up 1% on Wednesday, and up nearly 5% on the week, as investors look forward to President Trump's White House crypto summit on Friday.&nbsp;

U.S. stocks plunged Tuesday as President Donald Trump&#8216;s tariffs on key trade partners came into effect, prompting retaliatory measures and intensifying <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44110685/markets-see-hardly-a-flesh-wound-so-far-but-centurys-biggest-trade-war-looms-says-bob-elliott">global trade tensions.</a>
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.8%, extending Monday&#8217;s sharp decline of nearly 650 points and heading towards its worst performance of 2025. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44102599/canadian-pm-justin-trudeau-retaliates-with-25-tariffs-on-us-goods-amid-escalating-trade-war">Affected countries</a> announced retaliatory measures, further dampening investor sentiment.
China announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 15% on certain U.S. products, including chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared that Canada would impose a 25% tariff on U.S. goods. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that Mexico would respond with tariffs and other measures, to be announced on Sunday.
The yield on the US 10-year Treasury note fell to 4.13% on Tuesday, its lowest level since October 2024. Markets are now pricing in three quarter-point rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in 2025, according to data from CME FedWatch. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) slipped 0.58%. 
Natural gas futures rose more than 8% on Tuesday, above $4.45/MMBtu, the highest since December 2022. Stockpiles remain below the five-year average due to earlier extreme cold in the U.S. while LNG export flows have reached record levels. The United States Natural Gas Fund LP (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNG#NYSE">UNG</a>) ETF climbed 8.5%.&nbsp;
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) continued Monday's decline to trade below the $84,000 mark, leading crypto markets lower.
