Wall Street edges higher as GOP tax bill clears the House and bond yields ease, helping investors shake off prior losses while digesting mixed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45567476/us-business-activity-rebounds-in-may-but-tariff-fueled-inflation-surges-at-fastest-pace-in-3-years">May business activity data.</a>
President Donald Trump's "one big beautiful tax bill" narrowly passed the House in a 215-214 vote and now moves to the Senate. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the proposed legislation is projected to add approximately $3 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade.
U.S. Treasury yields saw a whipsaw session, with the 30-year bond yield initially spiking to 5.15% before retreating by 9 basis points to 5.06% by midday in New York. The reversal in long-term rates signaled renewed investor appetite for long-duration bonds amid attractive yields.
Wednesday's sharp rise in yields had triggered a broad afternoon selloff in equities, but Thursday's pullback eased pressure on risk assets and improved investor sentiment.
The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.3% to 5,860 on Thursday, slightly recouping losses from the previous session. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 outperformed with a 0.7% gain.
Technology and consumer discretionary stocks led gains, riding momentum from falling yields. In contrast, defensive sectors like utilities and healthcare lagged. 
The U.S. dollar index (DXY) is on track to snap a three-day losing streak, supported by stronger-than-expected Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data for May. While the surveys pointed to solid growth, they also revealed renewed inflationary pressures, which tempered hopes for near-term Federal Reserve rate cuts.
Markets now fully price in a 25-basis-point rate cut only by December 2025, compared to prior expectations of an October move, based on CME Group's FedWatch Tool.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) extended its 2025 rally, jumping 2% above $111,000 to set fresh all-time highs. The world's largest cryptocurrency is now up 20% year-to-date. 
Gold prices, however, fell 0.7% to trade below $3,200 per ounce. Despite Thursday's drop, the precious metal has surged 25% so far in 2025, outperforming other major asset classes, continuing to attract inflows amid sticky inflation and uncertain fiscal policy paths.

The S&amp;P 500 hovered near 5,930, little changed on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.7% amid weakness in blue-chip stocks. In contrast, the Nasdaq 100 advanced 0.5%, led by a 4.6% rally in Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>), which extended gains following its annual I/O developer conference.
Google unveiled a series of AI initiatives, highlighting that its Gemini assistant now boasts over 400 million monthly active users and delivers AI Overviews to more than 1.5 billion people. The company also touted Gemini 2.5 Pro's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/25/05/45548615/alphabet-well-positioned-for-google-search-dominance-analyst-says-can-navigate-the-shift-to-ai-search">performance leadership in industry benchmark</a>s.
Bond markets faced renewed selling pressure, with the 30-year Treasury yield surging to 5.02% — the highest in nearly two months — as traders digested the potential fiscal implications of President Donald Trump&#8216;s proposed "One Big Beautiful Bill," which economists say could further worsen the U.S. deficit outlook.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) stole the spotlight, surging past its previous record to hit an intraday high of $109,500, buoyed by news that JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>) will allow clients to buy Bitcoin, though without offering custody services.
In commodities, oil prices eased 0.6% to $61.50 per barrel after an overnight spike triggered by unconfirmed reports of an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities. Gold rose 0.5% to $3,310 per ounce, marking its highest level since May 11.

Wall Street Stalls As Yields Rise, Bitcoin Breaks Records Above $109,000: What's Driving Markets Wednesday?

U.S. stocks pulled back Tuesday morning as Wall Street recalibrated expectations on growth and inflation amid rising fiscal risks tied to President Donald <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">Trump's sweeping tax proposal.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 declined 0.4% to 5,935, potentially ending its six-day rally, while tech shares showed parallel losses. Small-cap equities held their ground, with the Russell 2000 trading flat.
Tensions are mounting in the U.S. House of Representatives, where lawmakers are locked in heated debates over Trump's proposed "One Big Beautiful Bill." The bill seeks to extend 2017 tax cuts, expand exemptions and overhaul federal spending, effectively tying tax relief to a reshaping of government priorities.
Trump has personally urged GOP lawmakers to back the bill, which he considers central to his second-term agenda.
&#8220;Alternative to not passing tax bill is massive tax hikes,&#8221; Trump said on Tuesday. 
Markets responded swiftly to the possibility of higher long-term government borrowing. The yield on the 30-year Treasury note rose seven basis points to 4.98%, a level not seen since March. As a result, the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) fell 0.9%.
Despite rising yields, gold rallied sharply by 1.8% to $3,280 per ounce, reversing nearly all of last week's losses. The safe-haven demand may reflect investor concern over mounting deficits and inflationary spillovers.
In energy markets, Henry Hub natural gas prices spiked over 9% to $3.39 per million British thermal units. Traders are betting on a demand rebound in case of an early summer heatwave, which could sharply increase air conditioning usage.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) eased 0.4% to $105,000.

Wall Street Falls As 30-Year Treasury Flirts With 5% Yield: What's Driving Markets Tuesday?

Home improvement retailer The Home Depot (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HD#NYSE">HD</a>) could be a gauge for the do-it-yourself growth in the era of high home prices and mortgage rates when the company reports first-quarter financial results Tuesday<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings"> before market open.</a>
Here are the earnings estimates, what experts are saying ahead of the report, and the key items to watch for.
Earnings Estimates: Analysts expect the company to report first-quarter revenue of $39.33 billion, up from $36.42 billion in last year's first quarter, according to data<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pro/register?utm_adType=bzprocontent&amp;utm_campaign=14daytrial&amp;utm_ad=0519"> from Benzinga Pro.</a>
The company has beaten analyst estimates for revenue in two straight quarters and six of the last 10 quarters overall.
Analysts expect the company to report first-quarter earnings per share of $3.60, down from $3.63 in last year's first quarter. The company has beaten analyst estimates for earnings per share in more than 10 straight quarters overall.

What Experts Are Saying: While Home Depot showed signs of improvement in April, the delay of the Spring season could lead to lower comparable sales, JPMorgan analyst Christopher Horvers said in a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/05/45236384/home-depot-may-face-weaker-comps-in-q1-as-choppy-spring-and-tariff-risks-weigh">recent investor note.</a>
The analyst reiterated an Overweight rating on Home Depot and lowered the price target from $470 to $410.
Horvers is cautious on the company's gross margins for the quarter, while seeing positives like inventory shrink likely coming in the report.
The analyst said macro economic uncertainty will also likely weigh on higher-ticket spending in the report and the future. Horvers said the home improvement retailer will likely keep its guidance in place and revisit things after the second quarter report.
Freedom Capital Markets Chief Global Strategist Jay Woods said Home Depot's report comes as the stock has struggled year-to-date.
"Home Depot results will give a peek at how the DIY home retail investor is changing their spending habits," Woods said in a weekly <a href="https://jaywoods.substack.com/">newsletter</a>.
Woods said investors will be looking to see if Home Depot revises its guidance given higher interest rates and economic challenges.
Goldman Sachs analyst Kate McShane has a Buy rating on Home Depot and $421 price target <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/25/04/44797563/goldman-sachs-sees-upside-in-retail-giants-dollar-tree-home-depot-best-buy-and-target-despite-tariff-margin-pressures">ahead of the report.</a>
The analyst said the company won't be widely impacted by tariffs in the short term, with most of its imported goods being seasonal and spring merchandise already in inventory at stores.
In the past, Home Depot helped offset tariff impacts by sourcing alternative items and adjusting operations, McShane said in the note.
The analyst highlighted Home Depot's management commentary about home buyers likely sidelined with rates in the 6% to 6.5% range.

Home Depot CEO Ted Decker was among the retail CEOs <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44920573/ceos-of-walmart-target-home-depot-meet-trump-to-push-back-on-tariffs-impacting-consumer-prices">who met with</a> President Donald Trump to share concerns about the impact tariffs could have on the sector.
Investors and analysts will be watching to see if Home Depot can maintain its momentum from<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/02/43937535/home-depot-lifts-annual-dividend-after-strong-q4-but-soft-2025-outlook-weighs-on-stock" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> the fourth quarter</a>. In the fourth quarter, sales were up 14.1% year over year, and customer transactions were up 7.6% year over year.
A recent Placer.ai <a href="https://www.placer.ai/anchor/articles/lowes-and-the-home-depot-weathering-q1-storms-and-looking-to-the-horizon">report </a>indicates that Home Depot saw fewer visits during the first quarter. The report said visits to Home Depot fell 3.8% in the first quarter on a year-over-year basis. The report showed visits down 2.3%, 9.2% and 0.7% in the months of January, February and March respectively.
Visits were down 1.8% year-over-year in April, which could factor into second-quarter and full-year guidance. Placer.ai said the good news is that last year's peak weekly visits came in mid-May, which could be a sign of optimism for the current quarter.
Home Depot's report comes one day before rival Lowe's Companies (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LOW#NYSE">LOW</a>), which reports on Wednesday. The report from Home Depot could make Lowe's shares volatile as they operate in the same sector and could indicate what's to come in Lowe's report.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average could also be volatile following Home Depot's report. Home Depot is one of the 30 components of the closely watched market index. Since the Dow Jones is price-weighted, Home Depot is one of the larger components and currently the third largest weighting (5.5%) of the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>).
Higher mortgage rates have often helped home improvement retailers, as they lead to more do-it-yourself home projects and spending money on existing homes rather than buying a new one.
HD Price Action: Home Depot stock trades at $379.91 Monday versus a 52-week trading range of $323.77 to $439.37. Home Depot stock is down 2.2% year-to-date and up 12.5% over the last year, outpacing a 4.5% year-to-date decline and 2.8% one-year gain for rival Lowe's.

Home Depot Q1 Earnings Preview: Tariffs, Mortgage Comments, How Consumers Are 'Changing Their Spending Habits'

U.S. stocks trimmed early-session losses by midday Monday, as investors showed limited concern after Moody's downgraded U.S. sovereign credit from Aaa to Aa1, effectively stripping the world's largest economy of its last <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45492889/americas-credit-strength-just-got-cut-again-should-you-panic">top-tier credit rating. </a>
The S&amp;P 500 index hovered near Friday's close. A green end to the session would mark the sixth consecutive daily gain. The Nasdaq 100 also traded flat, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average outperformed, and small caps lagged. 
Bond markets initially reacted sharply, with 30-year Treasury yields spiking above 5% following the downgrade. Yet, buying interest emerged during the session, pulling yields back to 4.95%. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) still was down 0.6% on the day. 
The U.S. dollar index (DXY) weakened 0.6% to 100.40, reflecting moderate selling pressure on the greenback. Sector performance was muted overall, except for energy, which fell 1.5%. Crude oil slipped 0.4%, while natural gas dropped 6% amid oversupply concerns. 
Gold rose 1% to $3,235 per ounce, supported by safe-haven flows. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rallied 2%, climbing above the $105,000 mark.

Stocks Mixed, Treasury Bonds Slip On Moody's US Downgrade: What's Driving Markets Monday?

Major indexes are lower after Moody's downgraded its rating of US credit.

Major indexes are higher. Investors may be reacting to recent trade progress and this week's inflation data.

Wall Street fought for a fifth consecutive day of gains on Friday, with major indexes edging slightly higher by midday in New York as investors continued to digest the week's significant trade breakthroughs and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">recalibrate their economic expectations.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.1% to 5,925, its highest level since early March, while the Nasdaq 100 held firm after a strong prior session. Gains were broad but cautious as markets balanced optimism over de-escalating tariffs with growing macro concerns. 
Healthcare stocks rebounded from recent underperformance, buoyed by a rally in Eli Lilly &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLY#NYSE">LLY</a>), while the energy sector lagged as crude prices cooled.
The U.S. dollar surged after the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45470155/consumer-sentiment-crashes-to-5-year-lows-as-inflation-fears-reach-1981-levels">University of Michigan's consumer sentiment report</a> delivered one of the bleakest stagflationary signals in recent decades. 
The headline Consumer Sentiment Index dropped to its lowest level since June 2020, while the Consumer Expectations subindex hit levels not seen since 1980. Year-ahead inflation expectations soared to 7.3%, the highest since late 1981. 
The spike in inflation fears rattled rate-cut bets. Fed funds futures slashed the odds of a June interest rate cut to just 5%, effectively pricing out any move next month. 
Markets now fully price the first rate cut only by October 2025, with a second possibly arriving in December.
Treasury yields rose as bond prices fell, with the 30-year yield rising back to 4.90%, following the dismal sentiment data. The combination of rising yields and a stronger dollar weighed heavily on gold, which dropped 1.8% and is headed for its worst weekly performance since November 2024. 
In crypto, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) bounced back and reclaimed the $104,500 level.

Retail sales rose just 0.1% in April, slightly above flat expectations, but core retail sales—a category tied more closely to GDP—fell 0.3%, signaling weakening underlying consumption.
Producer prices contracted by 0.5% month-over-month, defying forecasts for an increase and marking the steepest drop since April 2020. 
Defensive sectors outperformed, with consumer staples and utilities leading gains, reflecting a cautious market tone.

Major indexes are higher after April PPI figures came in softer than expected.

U.S. tech stocks extended their weekly rally into Wednesday's session, lifted by renewed investor appetite for risk following a breakthrough in early-week U.S.-China trade negotiations. This reignited hopes for a more <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">stable global trade outlook. </a>
The Nasdaq 100 rose 0.5% by midday in New York, reaching levels last seen in late February. Heavyweight chipmakers led the rally, as Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) surged 4% and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) jumped 5%.
Traders welcomed mounting expectations of large-scale investments from Gulf nations into U.S. tech and semiconductor sectors, as President Donald Trump secured new economic agreements with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45417156/nvidia-amd-stocks-climb-as-trump-plans-to-ease-ai-chip-export-rules">Middle Eastern countries</a>, including Saudi Arabia and Syria.
While the Nasdaq marched higher, the S&amp;P 500 stalled and both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Russell 2000 slipped slightly, indicating a more selective rally focused on high-growth sectors.
Clean energy and solar stocks outperformed again, building on strong Tuesday gains. Investors cheered a less-severe-than-expected revision to clean energy tax credits in the latest Republican tax proposal.
The commodity space told a different story, with gold prices dropping nearly 2%, breaking below the $3,200 per ounce mark for the first time in over a month. 
The yellow metal is now tracking its worst weekly performance since November 2024, with two trading sessions still left this week.
Investors appear to be rotating out of safe-haven assets, as appetite for equities and riskier plays returns on global trade optimism. 
Rising Treasury yields also weighed on broader market sentiment. The yield on the 2-year Treasury note broke above 4%, hitting its highest level in more than two months. Meanwhile, the 30-year bond yield rose 5 basis points to 4.97%, drawing closer to the psychologically important 5% mark—a level often associated with tightening financial conditions and pressure on long-duration assets.

April's Consumer Price Index report released on Tuesday was generally received as positive news by markets and analysts. The data indicate that inflation is cooling faster than expected, supporting hopes for a potential pause or even an eventual cut in interest rates <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45379707/sp-500-to-6500-goldman-sachs-trims-recession-odds-as-trump-backs-off-on-tariffs">by the Federal Reserve. </a>
CPI Data: The Consumer Price Index was 2.3% higher compared to a year ago, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45374267/inflation-eases-in-april-as-trumps-tariffs-dont-push-prices-higher">coming in below</a> economists&#8217; expectations of 2.4%.&nbsp;
The core CPI, which strips out volatile food and energy categories, rose to 2.8% on an annual basis, and month-over-month, it increased 0.2%, below expectations of a 0.3% increase.

Expert Ideas: Economists and analysts were pleased overall with April's CPI data, but there is some disagreement as to the effect of tariffs and a possible increase in inflation later this year.&nbsp;
Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic adviser at Allianz, highlighted the ongoing discussion about whether tariffs will drive inflation and said April's data will bring little clarity to the debate.&nbsp;
"While good news, the numbers will have little impact on the ongoing debate on the possible inflationary impact of tariffs — between those who will interpret these numbers as illustrating no price pass-throughs to speak of, and others who will argue it's too early to see them," El-Erian wrote on<a href="https://x.com/elerianm/status/1922270528683049386"> social media</a>.&nbsp;

Bill Adams, chief economist for Comerica Bank, does anticipate inflation picking up in the second half of 2025 as businesses pass the cost of tariffs onto consumers.&nbsp;
However, he tempered this view: "After cuts to the tariff rates applied to most imports, the effect will be smaller than it appeared a few weeks ago," Adams said.&nbsp;
Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Northlight Asset Management, said that April's cool CPI data and the breakthrough in the trade war with China should provide much-needed relief for markets and investors.&nbsp;
"And just like that, the markets' twin fears — a tariff-induced recession and sticky inflation — have been greatly assuaged," Zaccarelli said.

Tariffs Paused, But Not Gone: Economist Says Inflation Risks Remain

Wall Street's rally stretched into a second session Tuesday, fueled by improving investor sentiment after an early-week breakthrough in U.S.-China trade talks, easing inflation data and fresh geopolitical headlines involving major investment pledges <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">from the Middle East.</a>
The Consumer Price Index showed signs of cooling in April, as both headline and core readings eased or met expectations, easing concerns that Trump's proposed trade tariffs would trigger a surge in inflation.
The S&amp;P 500 advanced 0.7%, adding to Monday's 3.3% surge, and reached its highest level since March 3.
Technology stocks outperformed again, with the Nasdaq 100 jumping 1.8%, driven by a standout 5.3% rally in NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>).
The chipmaker giant surged after reports that the United Arab Emirates may receive approval to purchase over a million of its advanced AI processors, while Saudi Arabia pledged up to $600 billion in future U.S. investments, with a focus on technology and infrastructure.
Alphabet Inc.'s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>)(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) Google, Oracle Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ORCL#NYSE">ORCL</a>), Salesforce Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CRM#NYSE">CRM</a>), Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NYSE">UBER</a>) and DataVolt have committed to invest a combined $80 billion in technology initiatives across both the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, according to a White House press release.
The news came during President Donald Trump's diplomatic visit to the Middle East, where he also reiterated confidence in the Republican tax bill, saying, "We're in good shape to pass the tax bill," and calling it "the biggest tax cut in history."
Crude oil prices spiked nearly 3% to surpass $63 a barrel after Trump warned that Iranian oil exports could be driven to zero due to the country&#8217;s threat to regional stability.
The rally marks a 10% surge over the past four sessions, putting crude on track for its best four-day run since 2022.
The energy sector rallied in tandem, with U.S. energy stocks rising 1.5% on the day.
U.S. Treasury yields extended gains amid improving risk appetite. The 10-year yield jumped to 4.50%, while the 30-year yield climbed to 4.95%, signaling stronger expectations for economic resilience and possibly tighter monetary conditions down the line.
The U.S. dollar index slipped 0.5% after Monday's strong gains, reflecting a mild pullback as traders repositioned. Gold rose 0.6% to recover some ground amid geopolitical headlines.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rose 1.4% to $104,000, continuing its uptrend and reclaiming momentum after days of sideways action.

The index's breakout above its 200-day moving average, a closely watched technical level, marked its first such move since the tariff escalation on April 2. 
The S&amp;P 500, likewise, gapped higher at the open, climbing toward 5,838 and holding above its 200-day moving average throughout the session.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fed Pivot Still Needed For Sustained Recovery, Analyst Says</h3>
While the bounce stoked investor enthusiasm, technical experts issued a note of caution. 
Adam Turnquist, chief technical strategist at LPL Financial, said the reclaiming of the 200-day moving average could "raise the probability of a sustained recovery," particularly by attracting systematic investors and trend-following funds back into the market.
Still, Turnquist warned that V-shaped recoveries tend to require policy pivots, "usually a dovish turn from the Fed," which remains unlikely. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has continued to emphasize patience, suggesting the central bank won&#8217;t rush to ease policy despite mounting macro headwinds.
Historically, the current bounce may not be out of the woods. 
According to LPL data, when the S&amp;P 500 falls 15% or more from a record high, the index tends to suffer an additional average and median drawdown of 18-19% over the following year. The benchmark breached that threshold on April 4 but has only dropped 5.5% since — the shallowest follow-through decline among 14 comparable instances since 1950.
Still, it&#8217;s not all gloom. Forward-looking returns after such deep pullbacks have been positive 64% of the time, with the 12-month average gain sitting around 8%, offering some hope for longer-term investors willing to stomach near-term volatility.

Dow Jones Adds 1,000 Points, Breaks 200-Day Moving Average For First Time Since April 2 Tariff Shock

Wall Street staged a robust rally Monday following the U.S.-China trade truce that slashed reciprocal tariffs by <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">over 100 percentage points</a>.
By midday, risk-on sentiment was running at full throttle, propelling the Nasdaq 100 up 3.5% and lifting the S&amp;P 500 by 2.7% to 5,815.43—its highest level since March. The Dow Jones surged 958 points, or 2.3%, while the small-cap Russell 2000 added 3%.
Under the 90-day reprieve, the U.S. will cut tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%. China, in turn, will lower its tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%, effective May 14. The two countries also agreed to launch a formal mechanism for ongoing economic consultations, easing fears of a permanent decoupling.

Sector-wise, chipmakers led the rally, with the iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) jumping 7.2%. Marvell Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MRVL#NASDAQ">MRVL</a>) and Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MU#NASDAQ">MU</a>) gained 9% each. Investors expect the trade truce to ease chip disruptions and stabilize overseas demand.
While equities soared, gold suffered its worst day since Trump's election victory in November 2024. Gold prices dropped 3%, falling below $3,230 per ounce, as investors rotated out of safe havens and into risk assets.
The U.S. dollar index surged 1.3% to 101.8. The short-end of the curve also jumped, driven by fading expectations for near-term Fed rate cuts, with 2-year yields up 10 basis points to 4.0%. Yields on 30-year Treasury bonds climbed to 4.87%,
Oil prices rose 2% to $62.30 per barrel, reaching their highest level since late April amid hopes of a demand boost from improved global trade conditions.
