Even with tougher border policies enacted under President Donald Trump, German airline Deutsche Lufthansa (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DLAKY#OTC">DLAKY</a>) reportedly has seen no drop in bookings between the U.S. and Europe.
According to a Reuters report, CFO Till Streichert noted that the airline&#8217;s transatlantic operations are continuing to thrive, with expected strong earnings growth.
This positive outlook contrasts with recent trends observed by other airlines. Recently, Delta Air Lines lowered its first-quarter revenue and profit guidance, with its outlook impacted by recent declines in consumer confidence <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/44237055" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">amid economic uncertainty</a>.
The report further noted Virgin Atlantic said that, even though 2025 started strong, there are signs that demand in the U.S. has slowed.
In other news, On Tuesday, Lufthansa announced the <a target="_blank" href="https://newsroom.lufthansagroup.com/en/lufthansa-deploys-state-of-the-art-a350-long-haul-aircraft-from-frankfurt/" rel="noreferrer noopener">deployment</a> of four Airbus A350-900s from Frankfurt since the start of the summer schedule, with two more set to arrive in May and July. These aircraft will serve routes to Seoul, Shanghai, Denver, and Seattle. The A350-900 offers improved efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 30%. Lufthansa plans to add 61 new aircraft by 2027 as part of its major fleet renewal.
Additionally, Lufthansa and the UFO union have reached a new part-time <a href="https://newsroom.lufthansagroup.com/en/lufthansa-and-the-ufo-union-agree-on-new-part-time-collective-agreement/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">collective agreement</a>, effective retroactively from January 1, 2025. The agreement enhances work-life balance for cabin crew while providing more flexible, needs-based staffing. Lufthansa benefits from improved personnel planning and streamlined internal regulations. 
Michael Niggemann, Lufthansa&#8217;s HR executive, expressed satisfaction with the agreement, noting its focus on flexibility and responsiveness to market demand.

Air Europa, 20% owned by International Consolidated Airlines Group (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABWF#OTC">BABWF</a>), previously saw IAG abandon plans for full ownership due to regulatory hurdles, Reuters reported.
The report highlighted that the Spanish airline is seeking funding to repay pandemic-era government loans totaling 475 million euros ($491.8 million).
Reuters cited Spanish newspaper El Economista that discussions with Lufthansa include the possibility of the German airline acquiring a 20% stake in Air Europa.
The report further mentioned that last November, Air France-KLM also expressed interest in acquiring a stake in Air Europa.

Deutsche Lufthansa (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DLAKY#OTC">DLAKY</a>) reported quarterly earnings of $1.01 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $0.94 by 7.45 percent. The company reported quarterly sales of $11.802 billion which missed the analyst consensus estimate of $11.974 billion by 1.44 percent. This is a 5.53 percent increase over sales of $11.184 billion the same period last year.

On Monday, the U.S. Transportation Department <a target="_blank" href="https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/dot-secures-nearly-1-billion-refunds-airline-passengers-through-new-enforcement" rel="noreferrer noopener">announced</a> that it is assessing $2.5 million in civil penalties against three airlines for significant delays in issuing refunds owed to passengers due to COVID-19-related flight disruptions.
The affected airlines are Lufthansa (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DLAKY#OTC">DLAKY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DLAKF#OTC">DLAKF</a>), KLM Royal Dutch Airways (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KLMR#OTC">KLMR</a>), and South African Airways.
The U.S. Department stated that these penalties stem from delays in providing over $900 million in refunds to passengers whose flights were disrupted by the pandemic.
Passengers had to wait months for their refunds. Lufthansa and KLM each faced penalties of $1.1 million.
The DOT reported it had facilitated the return of nearly $4 billion in refunds and reimbursements to airline passengers, including over $600 million for those affected by the Southwest Airlines Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LUV#NYSE">LUV</a>) holiday meltdown in 2022.
Reuters noted that in 2022, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg revealed that the U.S. government had completed investigations into ten airlines regarding delayed pandemic passenger refunds, with another 10 investigations still pending.
The refund processing delays for Lufthansa passengers on U.S. flights extended beyond 100 days in 2020.
Lufthansa attributed the delays to an unprecedented volume of refund requests during the pandemic, describing the situation as handling &#8220;equivalent to the workload of two-and-a-half months every day.&#8221;
The German airline stated that between March 2020 and September 2022, it issued $5.3 billion in refunds, including $802 million to U.S. customers.
KLM explained that staffing and technical issues, compounded by the sheer number of refund requests, resulted in many customers waiting for months.
Despite this, KLM has implemented what it claims to be one of the most customer-friendly refund policies in the industry, refunding $84.15 million to U.S. customers who were not initially entitled to refunds.
South African Airways faced over 400 complaints for failing to make timely refunds. The state-owned airline, already struggling financially and on the verge of liquidation before entering bankruptcy protection in 2019, saw its situation worsen with the pandemic&#8217;s impact on air travel.
