The Fund uses a passive management (or indexing) approach to seek to track the total return performance, before fees and expenses, of the Index. The Freedom 100 Emerging Markets Index is a freedom-weighted emerging markets equity index. The Index is designed to track the performance of a portfolio of approximately 100 equity securities, which included preferred stocks, in emerging market countries. Country inclusion and weights are determined based on third-party quantified data covering 83 personal and economic freedom variables. Variables can be categorized into three main types of freedom metrics: civil freedom (such as absence of terrorism, human trafficking, torture, disappearances and detainments), political freedom (such as rule of law, due process, freedom of the press, freedom of expression, freedom of religion, and freedom of assembly), and economic freedom (such as marginal tax rates, access to international trade, business regulations, soundness of the money supply, and size of government).

Freedom 100 Emerging Markets ETF

One of the asset classes generating plenty of buzz as a 2021 idea is emerging markets. Up 4.5% over the past month, the MSCI Emerging Markets Index is already pricing in that enthusiasm.
It&#39;s about time.
While U.S. equities soared over the past decade, emerging market equivalents traded mostly sideways. Buoyed by a change of scenery at the White House, a weak dollar and attractive valuations, among other factors, there are tailwinds in place for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/20/12/18688152/coronavirus-pandemic-lifted-this-etf-but-it-should-thrive-afterward">developing world equities to flourish</a> in the new year.
&ldquo;An essential part of that potential mean-reversion, I believe, is the US dollar. For EM to outperform both cyclically and secularly we will need to see the dollar head lower,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.fidelity.com/learning-center/trading-investing/markets-sectors/2021-emerging-markets">writes Jurrien Timmer</a>, Fidelity director macro in the firm&#39;s asset allocation division. &ldquo;After all, for a US-based investor, currency risk is an important part of the mix if you&rsquo;re invested in non-US markets.&rdquo;
With momentum in mind, here are three emerging markets ETFs to consider now and in 2021.
Alpha Architect Freedom 100 Emerging Markets ETF (FRDM)
The Alpha Architect Freedom 100 Emerging Markets ETF (CBOE: FRDM) is outperforming the MSCI Emerging Markets Index by nearly 50 basis points this year. Alone, that&#39;s pretty impressive, but that statistic is even more surprising, pleasantly so, when considering FRDM doesn&#39;t feature any direct exposure to China, one of 2020&#39;s best-performing major equity markets.
FRDM&#39;s freedom weighting methodology steers the fund&#39;s geographic allocations away from countries with dubious human rights records, among other factors, so this is not the ETF for investors seeking China or Russia exposure.
FRDM&#39;s feel-good story has material impact for investors. Due in large part to lower beta Taiwan and South Korea <a href="https://documents.anevis-solutions.com/life/Life_and_Liberty_Emerging_Markets_Index.pdf">combining for over half</a> the fund&#39;s geographic weight, FRDM has a 39.19% weight to tech stocks, or about double the MSCI Emerging Markets Index&#39;s weight to the same sector.
<h2>KraneShares Emerging Market Healthcare Index ETF (KMED)</h2>
The KraneShares Emerging Market Healthcare Index ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/kmed#NYSE">KMED</a>) is a hidden gem among emerging markets ETFs. Obviously, the U.S. has a robust health care sector, one with plenty of opportunities for investors of all risk tolerances, but KMED brings growth to the health care ETF table.
&ldquo;By 2040, emerging market countries on average are projected to increase healthcare spending as percent of GDP by 24.4% compared to just 9.8% in developed markets over the same time period,&rdquo; <a href="https://kraneshares.com/kmed/">according to KraneShares</a>.
KMED is already delivering for investors. The KraneShares fund is up 64% over the past year while the S&amp;P 500 Health Care Index is higher by 13.12% over that time.
WisdomTree Emerging Markets ex-State-Owned Enterprises Fund (XSOE)
Another way to potentially outperform traditional benchmarks, the WisdomTree Emerging Markets ex-State-Owned Enterprises Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/xsoe#NYSE">XSOE</a>) focuses on growth sectors by excluding companies in which governments own major stakes, also known as state-owned enterprises (SOEs).
XSOE dodges problem areas such as energy (low oil prices) and financial services (non-performing loans) <a href="https://www.wisdomtree.com/blog/2020-11-23/taking-soe-risks-off-the-table">to overweight growth sectors</a>, such as communication services and consumer discretionary.
The strategy works as XSOE is higher by 23.06% this year.

3 Emerging Markets ETFs For 2021

It fell 7.6% on Tuesday, but the rally by shares of Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tsm#NYSE">TSM</a>) has been nothing short of breathtaking.
The semiconductor foundry company nearly doubled off its March lows and, along the way, became one of the 10 largest companies in the world by market capitalization. With a market value of about $350 billion, Taiwan Semiconductor is larger than any U.S.-based chip name and roughly $100 billion bigger than both Intel (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/intc#NASDAQ">INTC</a>) and Nvidia (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nvda#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>).
The Taiwanese semiconductor Goliath also is also acting as the primary driver behind its home country&#39;s performance as one of 2020&#39;s best-performing emerging markets, meaning plenty of exchange-traded funds, including <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/20/07/16799577/exciting-prospects-for-hidden-gem-among-leveraged-etfs">some oft-overlooked names</a>, are benefiting from TSM bullishness.
Here are a few that fit that bill.
iShares MSCI Taiwan ETF (EWT)
The iShares MSCI Taiwan ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ewt#NYSE">EWT</a>) is the largest ETF dedicated to stocks in that country and it devotes more than 27% of its weight to the locally listed shares of Taiwan Semiconductor, good for one of the largest allocations to that stock among all ETFs.
That hefty exposure is working in favor of investors this year as EWT is higher by almost 9% compared to a loss of 2.53% for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, a benchmark in which Taiwan is one of the largest country weights. However, there are some risks with that big TSM weight.
&ldquo;Investors who want to maintain exposure to Taiwan and its dynamic, Tech-oriented economy may wish to reduce exposure to TSMC, either by partially shorting shares of TSM to offset the exposure from EWT, or by switching to an ETF with less concentration in Taiwan Semi,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.etfrc.com/index.php">according to the ETF Research Center (ETFRC</a>).
Alpha Architect Freedom 100 Emerging Markets ETF (FRDM)
Up almost 9% over the past month, the Alpha Architect Freedom 100 Emerging Markets ETF (CBOE: FRDM) is benefiting from a more than 11.2% weight to TSM, putting it in rare air among U.S.-listed ETFs.
That performance is all the more admirable when considering FRDM&#39;s freedom weighting methodology, one should investors well over the long haul, excludes Chinese stocks.
&ldquo;One such fund we like and have highlighted before is the Freedom 100 Emerging Markets ETF,&rdquo; according to ETFRC. &ldquo;It has about 11% allocated to TSMC (less than half of EWT&#39;s exposure), with about 25% of assets overall invested in Taiwanese stocks and another 20% invested in South Korea. And as we highlighted two weeks ago, companies in FRDM enjoy a higher growth rate than either EWT or the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (NYS:EWY).
VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH)
The VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/smh#NASDAQ">SMH</a>) has a 15.34% weight to TSM, or nearly 700 basis points than it allocates to Nvidia, its second-largest holding. Additionally. SMH&#39;s TSM exposure is almost 1,000 basis points higher than what&#39;s found in the PHLX SOX Semiconductor Sector Index.

3 ETFs Enjoying The Benefits of Taiwan Semiconductor Exposure

Data confirm that investors around the world continue allocating capital to environmental, social and governance (ESG) exchange traded funds, bringing some validation to a corner of the ETF universe that&#39;s still small in terms of total assets but growing in population.
<h3>What Happened</h3>
Last month, ESG ETFs listed around the world added $2.8 billion in new assets, boosting the total assets under management tally by almost 8% to $47.33 billion, <a href="https://etfgi.com/news/press-releases/2019/10/etfgi-reports-assets-invested-environmental-social-and-governance-esg">according to ETFGI</a>, a London-based ETF research firm.
That news comes on the heels of a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/19/10/14661056/3-nifty-esg-etfs-to-consider">Benzinga report noting</a> that in the U.S., there are six ESG ETFs with $1 billion or more in assets.
The largest ESG ETF in the U.S. is the iShares ESG MSCI USA Leaders ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/susl#NYSE">SUSL</a>). SUSL, which tracks the MSCI ESG Leaders Index, has $1.60 billion in assets. Another fund that tracks the same benchmark, the Xtrackers MSCI U.S.A. ESG Leaders Equity ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ussg#NYSE">USSG</a>), has almost $1.5 billion in assets and is the third-largest ESG ETF in the U.S. Both SUSL and USSG debuted earlier this year.
<h3>Why It&#39;s Important</h3>
&ldquo;Since the launch of the first ESG ETF/ETP in 2002, the iShares MSCI USA ESG Select ETF, the number and diversity of products has increased steadily, with 253 ESG ETFs/ETPs listed globally at the end of September 2019,&rdquo; according to ETFGI. &ldquo;In September, 5 new ESG ETFs/ETPs were launched.&rdquo;
Adding to the growth trajectory of ESG ETFs is issuers&#39; willingness to take the concept beyond domestic stocks. Said another way, the number of ESG funds with fixed income and international equity exposure is booming.
Emerging markets are included in that equation. For example, the Alpha Architect Freedom 100 Emerging Markets ETF (CBOE:FRDM), which tracks the Life + Liberty Freedom 100 Emerging Markets Index, debuted in June. That was a well-timed launch because FRDM features no exposure to China, meaning the fund has proven somewhat durable to trade tensions since inception.
FRDM measures a variety of civil, economic and political freedoms and has returned about 6.4% since coming to market.
The iShares MSCI USA ESG Select ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/susa#NYSE">SUSA</a>) is another example of a thriving international ESG ETF. In September, that fund hauled in $848.55 million of its $1.05 billion in assets, according to ETFGI.
<h3>What&#39;s Next</h3>
For now, it appears as though ESG ETF growth will be driven by investors outside the U.S. ETFGI date indicate that in September, 15 of the top 20 ESG ETFs in terms of net new assets were listed outside the world&#39;s largest economy.

Assets Continue Pouring Into ESG ETFs

The Freedom 100 Emerging Markets ETF (CBOE: FRDM) debuted May 23&nbsp;as the newest emerging markets exchange traded fund targeting virtuous investment principles, offering investors a refreshed view of environmental, social and governance (ESG) concepts in developing economies.
<h3>What To Know</h3>
While <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/19/03/13314705/another-esg-etf-enters-the-fold">there are plenty of ESG ETFs</a> trading in the U.S., including products dedicated to emerging markets stocks, these funds typically use the same&nbsp;methodologies, such as excluding alcohol, tobacco and gambling companies, civilian firearms makers and other companies perceived to be creating environmental harm.
FRDM, which tracks the Life + Liberty Freedom 100 Emerging Markets Index, has the potential to stand apart from the tired ESG strategies investors have been accustomed to.
<h3>Why It&#39;s Important</h3>
FRDM&#39;s underlying index employs a variety of freedom-gauging metrics, including the exclusion of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and a top-down approach that emphasizes civil, economic and political freedoms. The index&#39;s starting universe is 26 emerging markets, which are then screened by market value.
The index&#39;s civil freedom qualifier measures, among other factors, women&#39;s rights, detainments, torture, trafficking and a country&#39;s level <a href="https://www.lifeandlibertyindexes.com/freedom-100-emerging-markets-index">of violent crime</a>. The liberty element gauges various freedoms, including press, expression, religion, assembly as well as due process and rule of law. FRDM&#39;s economic freedom component looks at business, credit, and labor regulations, size of government, property laws and other factors.
FRDM features exposure to 10 developing economies with Taiwan, South Korea, Poland and Chile combining for about 71 percent of the fund&#39;s geographic weight. The new ETF has no exposure to Brazil, China and Russia. FRDM is the only emerging markets ETF to exclude China without being <a href="https://www.etf.com/sections/features-and-news/freedom-weighted-etf-debuts?nopaging=1">specifically designed to do so</a>.
Fifty-one percent of the new ETF&#39;s holdings hail from the technology and financial services sectors. The consumer discretionary and materials sectors combine for almost 22 percent of the new ETF&#39;s roster.
<h3>What&#39;s Next</h3>
FRDM has the potential to disrupt the ESG ETF arena, a corner of the ETF market that is growing in population terms, but one that has also been in need of some new concepts.
The new ETF charges 0.49 percent per year, or $49 on a $10,000 investment. That compares favorably with the average fees on traditional emerging markets ETFs as well ESG emerging markets funds.
