Looking for broad exposure to the Large Cap Value segment of the US equity market? You should consider the First Trust Value Line Dividend ETF (ARCA:FVD), a passively managed exchange traded fund launched on 08/19/2003.
The fund is sponsored by First Trust Advisors. It has amassed assets over $9.72 billion, making it one of the larger ETFs attempting to match the Large Cap Value segment of the US equity market.
<h2>Why Large Cap Value</h2>
Large cap companies typically have a market capitalization above $10 billion. They tend to be stable companies with predictable cash flows and are usually less volatile than mid and small cap companies.
Carrying lower than average price-to-earnings and price-to-book ratios, value stocks also have lower than average sales and earnings growth rates. When you look at long-term performance, value stocks have outperformed growth stocks in nearly all markets. But in strong bull markets, growth stocks are more likely to be winners.

First Trust Announces Adjournment Of Special Shareholder Meeting To Approve The Reorganization Of First Trust Value Line 100 Exchange-Traded Fund With First Trust Value Line Dividend Index Fund

Shares of General Electric Co. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ge#NYSE">GE</a>) plunged 7.5 percent on more than quadruple the average daily volume Monday after the Dow component, as was widely expected, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/media/cnbc/17/11/10772455/after-ge-slashes-its-dividend-who-will-be-next">unveiled a dividend cut</a> as part of its turnaround effort.
GE&#39;s quarterly dividend will be 12 cents a share, down from 24 cents, marking one of the largest dividend cuts among S&amp;P 500 firms since the global financial crisis.
&ldquo;The dividend allocation will be $4.2 billion for 2018, pushing it from above 100 percent of free cash flow to 60 percent to 70 percent, and the dividend yield from 4.7 percent to 2.3 percent,&rdquo; reports <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/13/ge-announces-broad-restructuring-to-keep-health-care-aviation-and-energy-units.html">CNBC</a>. &ldquo;The yield had been the highest in 30 years not counting the financial crisis.&rdquo;&nbsp;
GE&#39;s status as a dividend cutter could affect the stock&#39;s status in some well-known dividend exchange traded funds.

	ETF Impact</h3>
GE previously cut its payout during the financial crisis. Although the dividend rebounded, until Monday, in recent years, that prior cut disqualified the stock from ETFs that mandate stocks have a minimum dividend increase streak to be included in the fund. Some of the most popular dividend ETFs have payout increase streak requirements ranging from 10 to 25 years.
For now, it is just speculation, but some dividend ETFs that entered Monday holding GE could dramatically reduce or eliminate GE exposure when those funds undergo their next rebalancing. The $1.66 billion First Trust Morningstar Dividend Leaders Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fdl#NYSE">FDL</a>) entered Monday with a 4.6 percent weight to GE, making the stock that ETF&#39;s sixth-largest holding.
FDL, which is over 11 years old, tracks the Morningstar Dividend Leaders Index. While that benchmark does not have an explicit dividend increase streak requirement, it does look for high-yield stocks &ldquo;that have a consistent record of dividend payment and have the ability to sustain their dividend payments,&rdquo; <a href="http://www.morningstar.com/InvGlossary/morningstar-dividend-leaders-index.aspx">according to Morningstar</a>.&nbsp;
FDL rebalances in December.

	Other Possibilities</h3>
The First Trust Value Line Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fvd#NYSE">FVD</a>) has a small stake in GE (none of the ETF&#39;s holdings account for more than 0.65 percent of its weight), but FVD components must meet certain Value Line safety criteria. That could be a sign that GE&#39;s days in FVD are numbered.
FVD&#39;s underlying index is rebalanced monthly, so investors in the $4 billion ETF should soon know GE&#39;s fate in the fund. FDL was unchanged Monday while FVD finished modestly higher.

Some Dividend ETFs Could Give GE The Boot

Income investors looking for stocks that have achieved dividend achievers status do not need to confine their search to large-cap equities. A new exchange traded fund from First Trust provides a basket of mid- and small-cap stocks with dividend growth potential.
The First Trust SMID Cap Rising Dividend Achievers ETF (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sdvy#NASDAQ">SDVY</a>) debuted Thursday. The ETF tracks the Nasdaq US Small Mid Cap Rising Dividend Achievers Index, which &ldquo;is designed to provide access to a diversified portfolio of small- and mid-cap income producing securities.
&quot;The index construction process looks beyond just yield and analyzes the financial health of a company and its ability to maintain dividend increases by including a blend of historical and forward-looking factors to screen for high quality dividend growers,&rdquo; <a href="http://www.ftportfolios.com/Retail/etf/etfSummary.aspx?Ticker=SDVY">according to First Trust.</a>
SDVY debuted with 100 stocks with a median market value of $4.23 billion, indicating this fund resides at the smaller end of the mid-cap spectrum.
Rules And Requirements
SDVY has a screening process that helps ensure illiquid and micro-cap stocks do not find their way into the portfolio. For example, SDVY holdings must have a minimum market value of $500 million. The ETF&#39;s smallest holding is well above that, with market cap north of $800 million. Member firms must also have a minimum average daily dollar trading volume of $2 million over a three-month period.
SDVY components must also have &ldquo;paid a dividend in the trailing 12-month period greater than the dividend paid in the trailing 12-month period three and five years prior and had positive earnings per share in the most recent fiscal year greater than the earnings per share three fiscal years prior,&rdquo; according to First Trust.
To ensure reliable dividend growth, SDVY&#39;s index mandates a cash-to-debt ratio of more than 25 percent and a trailing 12-month payout ratio of 65 percent or less.
Sector Heavy 
While SDVY minimizes individual stock risk, with none of its holdings commanding weights of more than 1.2 percent, there is some sector heft to consider. For example, financials account for 31.6 percent of the new ETF&#39;s weight, while consumer discretionary and industrial stocks combine for nearly 46 percent.
&ldquo;High quality dividends are often associated with larger, well-established companies. However, smaller companies with strong balance sheets and financial flexibility may also provide a good source of income as well as capital appreciation and dividend growth potential,&rdquo; according to First Trust.
SDVY charges 0.6 percent annually, or $60 on a $10,000 investment.

An ETF For Dividend Achievers

First Trust, one of the largest issuers of smart beta exchange-traded funds, last week introduced six ETFs based on the Nasdaq Riskalyze indexes.
Those benchmarks &ldquo;are designed to provide diversified, value-added exposure to broad equity market categories. The indexes seek to outperform their cap-weighted benchmarks, while maintaining low tracking error by neutralizing sector and/or country exposures versus the benchmark,&rdquo; <a href="http://www.ftportfolios.com/LoadContent/grhdycj3gy3y">according to Illinois-based First Trust.</a>
The six new ETFs from First Trust include four US-focused funds, an ex-U.S. developed markets product and an emerging markets ETF.
<h3>U.S. ETFs And A Dividend Fund</h3>
The US Equity Dividend Select ETF (NASDAQ: RNDV) is the new dividend offering from First Trust. That new ETF tracks the Nasdaq Riskalyze US Equity Dividend Select Index, which features stocks from the Nasdaq 500 Index <a href="http://www.ftportfolios.com/retail/etf/etfsummary.aspx?Ticker=RNDV">which have paid dividends</a> over the past year and yield more than the Nasdaq 500.
RNDV holds 124 stocks and allocates almost 36 percent of its combined weight to consumer discretionary and technology stocks.
The Large Cap US Equity Select ETF (NASDAQ: RNLC) is the large-cap U.S. ETF that follows the Nasdaq Riskalyze methodology. RNLC also draws from the Nasdaq 500 Index and also mandates that members firms paid a dividend over the past 12 months.
The new ETF holds 400 stocks, over 20 percent hail from the technology sector. Consumer discretionary and healthcare names combine for almost 29 percent of the new ETF&#39;s weight. The Mid Cap US Equity Select ETF (NASDAQ: RNMC) and the Small Cap US Equity Select ETF (NASDAQ: RNSC) are the mid-cap and small-cap counterparts to RNLC.
RNSC&#39;s universe is culled from the Nasdaq US 700 Small Cap Index while RNMC holdings come from the Nasdaq 600 Mid Cap Index.
<h3>International Fare</h3>
The Developed International Equity Select ETF (NASDAQ: RNDM) tracks the Nasdaq Riskalyze Developed International Equity Select Index. RNDM&#39;s 75 holdings are ranked by trailing 12-month volatility.
Japan and the U.K. combine for a third of the new ETF&#39;s geographic weight while Germany and France, the two largest Eurozone economies, combine for 18 percent. RNDM charges 0.65 percent per year, or $65 on a $10,000 investment.
The Emerging Markets Equity Select ETF (NASDAQ: RNEM) also features a low volatility weighting scheme and assigns weights &ldquo;that are equal to the to the country and sector weights within the Nasdaq Emerging Markets Large Mid Cap Index. The index weighting methodology includes a maximum weight cap of 3 percent to prevent high concentrations among larger stock,&rdquo; according to First Trust.
To obtain exposure to Indian and Russian stocks, the ETF uses other ETFs. China and Taiwan combine for 34 percent of RNEM&#39;s roster.

First Trust Introduces A Slew Of New ETFs

Nearly 250 exchange-traded funds hit all-time highs on Tuesday. Included in that group were a slew of dividend ETFs, perhaps a sign that although financial markets are expecting the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates this year, the case for dividend-paying stocks remains firm.
Up almost 4 percent year-to-date, the First Trust Value Line Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fvd#NYSE">FVD</a>) was one of the ETF hitting a record high Tuesday, bringing its one-year gain to 21.5 percent. FVD, which turns 14 later this year, tracks the Value Line Dividend Index.

At a time when many income investors are concerned about the Fed&#39;s plan for interest rates, conventional wisdom would dictate dividend seekers steer clear of rate-sensitive sectors. FVD obliges with a mere 3 percent weight to real estate stocks, its smallest sector allocation. However, the ETF features ample rate sensitivity with a combined 35 percent allocation to utilities and consumer staples stocks, two of the most rate-sensitive sectors.
<h3>Performance Track</h3>
In FVD&#39;s favor is its balancing act between sectors that are believed to be vulnerable to rising Treasury yields and cyclical groups that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/16/11/8635256/non-conventional-wisdom-works-for-some-dividend-etfs">often perform well when interest rates rise</a>.
For example, financial services, one of the sector believed to most benefit from higher interest rates, is FVD&#39;s second-largest sector weight at 17 percent. Cyclical industrial and technology names combine for about 21 percent of the ETF&#39;s weight.
Over the past 10 years, the Value Line Dividend Index, FVD&#39;s underlying benchmark, is up 9 percent, which easily tops the returns of the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index and the S&amp;P 500 over the same span. FVD has also been less volatile the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index and the S&amp;P 500 over the past several years, according to issuer data.
<a href="https://www.google.com/finance?q=FVD&amp;ei=5J-tWKm2L43ijAHr6rvACQ">A black mark against FVD</a> is its 0.7 percent annual fee, which works out to be $70 on a $10,000 investment. That is high for ETFs, even for smart beta and dividend funds. Investors can find lower fees throughout the universe of U.S. dividend ETFs.

A Dividend ETF On The Rise

Fees aren&#39;t everything when it comes to exchange traded funds. Yes, it&#39;s possible for investors find excellent, long-term returns with ETFs that feature above-average fees. Likewise, not all low-fee ETFs merit investors&#39; attention.

	Still, lower fees remain one of the biggest reasons why scores of advisors and investors are dropping high-priced, underperforming actively managed mutual funds. However, some ETFs are pricey and that&#39;s not always a good thing. The First Trust Value Line Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fvd#NYSE">FVD</a>) is an example of that theme.

	FVD was one of 30 ETFs to hit an all-time high last Friday and one of a dozen dividend ETFs to accomplish that feat. FVD is also the most expensive of those dividend ETFs by a wide margin. The First Trust offering charges 0.7 percent per year, or $70 for every $10,000 invested.

	Sure, dividend ETFs usually carry higher expense ratios than ETFs tracking standard broad market indexes such as the S&amp;P 500 or the Russell 1000, but 0.7 percent a year is pricey even by the standards of dividend ETFs. Actually, FVD&#39;s annual fee is rich by the standards of all ETFs. Research for this piece turned up several different numbers for the average annual fee for ETFs, but all the figures discovered <a href="http://guides.wsj.com/personal-finance/investing/how-to-choose-an-exchange-traded-fund-etf/">were less than 0.45 percent</a>.

	So even when calling the average annual expense ratio on U.S. ETF 0.45 percent, FVD is more than 50 percent more expensive.

	FVD allocates 24.1 percent of its weight to utilities stocks, helping explain why the ETF is up 11.5 percent, but investors looking for a dividend ETF with big utilities can save some money with the iShares Select Dividend ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dvy#NYSE">DVY</a>). DVY devotes 31.3 percent of its weight to utilities stocks, one of the largest such allocations among all U.S. dividend ETFs. Over the past five years, DVY and FVD have each returned about 87 percent, but DVY charges just 0.39 percent per year.

	Interestingly, there are some comparisons that show FVD justifies its higher fee. For example, the First Trust ETF has topped the Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vym#NYSE">VYM</a>) by nearly 900 basis points over the past three years. One reason VYM is popular is its 0.09 percent expense ratio that makes it less expensive than <a href="https://personal.vanguard.com/us/funds/snapshot?FundId=0923&amp;FundIntExt=INT">92 percent of rival funds</a>.

	VYM has $13.4 billion in assets under management compared to $1.88 billion for FVD.

This Dividend ETF Soars...For A Price

Seven exchange traded funds hit 52-week highs on Wednesday. Underscoring the strength displayed by the utilities sector this year, five of those funds were utilities ETFs.

	Leading up to the Federal Reserve raising interest rates in December, the first such move by the U.S. central bank in nearly a decade, utilities stocks and exchange-traded funds were widely seen as vulnerable to higher U.S. borrowing costs.

	Historical data confirm utilities stocks are the most negatively correlated to rising U.S. interest rates, and as such, they typically lag during rising rates environments. Last year, utilities finished as the <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/16/01/6122349/different-ways-to-turn-the-lights-on-with-utilities-etfs">third-worst performing sector</a> in the S&amp;P 500.

	Utilities&#39; resurgence, aided in large part by declining Treasury yields has also been a boon for an array of dividend ETFs that are heavily allocated to the sector. The First Trust Value Line&reg; Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fvd#NYSE">FVD</a>) is one such fund.

	Although FVD is up just 1.6 percent year-to-date, that is a better showing than some more popular dividend ETFs. It is also a performance that is owed in large part to the ETF&#39;s 23.4 percent weight to the utilities sector, one of the largest weights to that group among all dividend ETFs.

	FVD, which has more than $1.2 billion in assets under management, follows the Value Line&reg; Dividend Index. That benchmark &ldquo;begins with the universe of stocks that Value Line&reg; gives a SafetyTM Ranking of #1 or #2 using the Value Line&reg; SafetyTM Ranking System. All registered investment companies, limited partnerships and foreign securities not listed in the U.S. are removed from this universe,&rdquo; according to<a href="http://www.ftportfolios.com/Retail/Etf/EtfSummary.aspx?Ticker=FVD"> First Trust</a>.

	From there, higher-than-average yielders are selected with companies with market values below $1 billion excluded. FVD, which carries a five-star rating from Morningstar, holds 192 stocks.

	None of FVD&#39;s holdings garner a weight above 0.64 percent. The ETF&#39;s top 10 holdings, which feature two utilities stocks, include Questar Corporation (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/str#NYSE">STR</a>), Mattel Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/mat#NYSE">MAT</a>) and Illinois Tool Works Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/itw#NYSE">ITW</a>).

	FVD&#39;s trailing 12-month distribution is 2.36 percent.

A Seasoned Dividend ETF Tries To Get Its Groove Back

The First Trust Value Line Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fvd#NYSE">FVD</a>) recently celebrated its tenth birthday.

	More important than FVD's age is that the ETF has delivered a 10-year annualized return of 9.2 percent compared with 7.4 percent for the S&amp;P 500 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/spy#NYSE">SPY</a>), according to Morningstar.

	While FVD does not grab the same amount of press as the largest dividend ETFs, investors have embraced the First Trust offering by pouring $725.2 million into the fund. FVD has also achieved a 5-Star Overall Morningstar Rating as of 8/30/13, among 1028 funds in the Large Value category based on the ETF's Morningstar Risk-Adjusted Return, <a href="http://etfdailynews.com/2013/09/18/first-trust-value-line-dividend-index-fund-fvd-celebrates-10-years-outperforming-the-sp-500-index/">according to a statement</a>.

	FVD has impressed over the past three years as well. Investors that owned the ETF and reinvested the dividends earned returns of 56.1 percent since September 15, 2010. Now that the Federal Reserve has confirmed it will not tapering its $85 billion-per-month bond-buying program, FVD could be poised for more upside.

	Over the past three months, the ETF gained 1.5 percent, including reinvested dividends, but rising interest rates weighed on the ETF a bit. FVD, which charges 0.7 percent year, is heavily allocated to the rate-sensitive utilities sector and consumer staples stocks. Those sectors are not only richly valued, but <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/13/05/3626070/dividend-etfs-face-bubble-talk">have also proven vulnerable to the recent spike in interest rates</a>.

	With tapering off the table, income investors are free to embrace some of their favorite sectors again. With about 42 percent of FVD's combined weight allocated to utilities and staples, the fund is positioned to benefit in a no tapering world.

	"While the field has become more crowded over the past few years, FVD has distinguished itself for over a decade as an effective tool for investors seeking below-average volatility with above-average dividends,” said Ryan Issakainen, Senior Vice President and ETF Strategist at First Trust, in the statement.

	FVD's selection process begins with only those stocks that earn Value Line safety ratings of one or two. From there, the universe of eligible securities is parsed down to "those companies with a higher than average dividend yield, as compared to the indicated dividend yield of the Standard &amp; Poor's 500 Composite Stock Price Index," <a href="http://www.ftportfolios.com/Retail/Etf/EtfSummary.aspx?Ticker=FVD">according to First Trust</a>.

	FVD is equal-weighted and does offer <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/13/04/3530295/yes-this-etf-offers-dividend-growth">decent exposure to new sources of dividend growth</a>. FVD devotes over 21 percent of its combined weight to the financial services and technology sectors, two of the leading sources of S&amp;P 500 dividend growth over the past several years.

Dividend ETF Beats S&P 500 For A Decade

Some investors believe that a security's price tag is not the primary indicator of intrinsic value. For example, there were some investors and pundits that argued Apple (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) was inexpensive on a valuation basis when the shares traded above $700. Likewise, it is possible for a stock trading at $25 to be considered expensive relative to its peer group.

	The takeaway is that price tags can be superficial, but many investors still find themselves attracted to stocks or ETFs that look cheap on the outside. If the total number of U.S.-listed exchange traded products, ETFs and ETNs, is rounded up to 1,500, then currently about 11 percent of the universe trades below $20.

	That is fair amount and an amount large enough to mean some sub-$20 should be ignored while plenty of others are worth embracing. Here are few that fall into the positive, latter category.

	Global X FTSE ASEAN 40 ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/asea#NYSE">ASEA</a>) 
	In what has been a rough year for many of the more popular diversified emerging markets ETFs, the Global X FTSE ASEAN 40 ETF has gained 6.4 percent due to its focus on top-performing Southeast Asian markets. While ASEA is an interesting ETF trading below $18.50, investors should do a few minutes of homework before jumping in.

	The ETF is framed as a play on the ASEAN group of nations, but the fund only offers exposure to five ASEAN members or just half the group's membership. Additionally, ASEA's weight to the Philippines is slight at 0.7 percent. As was noted last month, ASEA's 38.6 percent <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/13/03/3418103/3-etfs-in-under-the-radar-rally-mode">allocation to Singapore</a> has been holding the fund back this year.

	That puts somewhat of a burden on Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand to pick up the slack. Indonesia and Thailand have answered the call, though it might be advisable to wait on ASEA until after global markets digest the result of Malaysia's upcoming elections. Still, ASEA has $20 this year if Indonesian and Thai equities continue on their current trajectories.

	PowerShares High Yield Equity Dividend Achievers Portfolio (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pey#NYSE">PEY</a>) 
	The PowerShares High Yield Equity Dividend Achievers Portfolio could be attractive to investors on three fronts. First, the ETF trades below $11. Second, PEY has a 30-day SEC yield of 4.05 percent. Third, the ETF pays a monthly dividend, providing for a steadier income stream than ETFs and stocks that deliver payouts on a quarterly basis.

	PEY tracks the NASDAQ Dividend Achievers 50 Index, which has outpaced the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index, the S&amp;P 500 Value Index and the S&amp;P 500 this year, <a href="http://www.invescopowershares.com/products/overview.aspx?ticker=PEY">according to PowerShares data</a>.

	The catch with PEY is that the ETF is not diverse at the sector level with utilities, financials and consumer staples combing for 75 percent of the fund's weight. On the other hand, PEY does a good job of mixing large-, mid- and small-caps together. Top-10 holdings include Altria (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/mo#NYSE">MO</a>), AT&amp;T (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/t#NYSE">T</a>) and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/lmt#NYSE">LMT</a>). PEY has $321.5 million in assets and charges 0.6 percent per year in fees.

	First Trust Value Line Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fvd#NYSE">FVD</a>) 
	The First Trust Value Line Dividend Index Fund offers investors another low price tag dividend option, but FVD's time below $20 may be short as it is just pennies below that area as of this writing. FVD uses a different weighting scheme than many of the larger dividend ETFs on the market today. The Value Line Dividend Index starts with stocks that earn a Value Line safety rating of one or two.

	From there, Value Line selects those companies with a higher than average dividend yield, as compared to the indicated dividend yield of the Standard &amp; Poor's 500 Composite Stock Price Index, <a href="http://www.ftportfolios.com/Retail/Etf/EtfSummary.aspx?Ticker=FVD">according to First Trust</a>. Sub-$1 billion market cap firms are also eliminated.

	The Value Dividend Index has also outpaced the Dow Jones Dividend Select Index and the S&amp;P 500 this year. Conservative investors will enjoy knowing FVD's underlying index has a three-year standard deviation that is 320 basis below that of the S&amp;P 500 and a beta of 0.75 against the benchmark U.S. index, according to First Trust data.

	FVD, a quarterly dividend payer, has $628.6 million in AUM and annual expense ratio of 0.7 percent.

Three Sub-$20 ETFs With Upside Potential

It is simple economics. The Federal Reserve's low interest rate policy and plans to keep rates low through 2015 have chased yield-hungry investors out of cash investments and into higher-yielding products. ETF sponsors have met investors' yield demands with aplomb, rolling out new <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/12/10/2994697/powershares-to-introduce-low-vol-high-dividend-etf">dividend-based products on a regular basis this year</a>.

The impact of investors' dividend desires is obvious. Dividend ETFs, new and old, have seen assets under management totals surge. Thirty-two dividend ETFs tracked by Dorsey Wright &amp; Associates collectively grew assets by 40 percent through the end of the third quarter compared to asset growth of 23 percent for all ETFs, <a href="http://alletf.com/content/new-dividend-etfs-being-created-just-not-equally">according to data provided by the firm</a>.

There are more than 32 dividend ETFs on the market today and the Dorsey Wright data does not include funds such as the First Trust Nasdaq Technology Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tdiv#NYSE">TDIV</a>), <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/12/10/3015362/some-niche-etfs-seeing-decent-inflows">which debuted just two months ago</a> and already has $30.4 million in AUM.

It is also worth noting that inflows to dividend ETFs have not been reserved for U.S.-focused funds. International payout funds tracking developed <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/12/09/2878500/has-a-new-era-dawned-for-em-dividend-etfs">and emerging markets</a> have seen AUM totals surge as well.

Staying Home
With Europe's sovereign debt crisis and slowing emerging markets growth on the minds of investors, many have opted for U.S. equities over international equivalents. That has helped the S&amp;P 500 enjoy a double-digit year-to-date gain. It also means investors have pumped plenty of cash into ETFs tracking U.S. dividend payers.

And those inflows have not been going just to the most familiar products such as the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vig#NYSE">VIG</a>) and the SPDR S&amp;P Dividend ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sdy#NYSE">SDY</a>), though those funds have grabbed their share of inflows. At the end of 2011, VIG had $8.9 billion in AUM, but that number had swelled to almost $11.9 billion at the end of the third quarter. SDY has seen its AUM haul jump 14.6 percent since the end of 2011.

On a percentage basis among U.S. equity dividend ETFs, no fund even comes close to the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/schd#NYSE">SCHD</a>), which has seen its AUM total nearly quadruple since the end of 2011. Give the ELEMENTS DJ High Yield Select 10 ETN (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dod#NYSE">DOD</a>) some credit for trying to compete with SCHD in terms of asset growth. The ETN has seen its assets more than triple this year, according to Dorsey Wright data.

Other impressive 2012 asset growers include the iShares High Dividend Equity Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hdv#NYSE">HDV</a>), one of 2011's most successful ETF launches. HDV had less than $920 million in AUM when the ball last dropped in Times Square. As of the close of markets on Monday, the ETF had almost $2.3 billion in assets.

The Guggenheim Multi-Asset Income ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cvy#NYSE">CVY</a>), the First Trust Morningstar Dividend Leaders Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fdl#NYSE">FDL</a>) and the First Trust Value Line Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fvd#NYSE">FVD</a>) also have seen stellar AUM growth.

Going Global
As was noted earlier, investors have plenty of choices when it comes to international dividend funds. The Global X Super Dividend ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sdiv#NYSE">SDIV</a>) is not a pure play global ETF as the U.S. accounts for almost 36 percent of SDIV's weight, but the real sources of allure here are a 30-day SEC yield of 6.7 percent and a monthly dividend. 

Dorsey Wright data indicate SDIV had just $29 million in AUM at the end of 2011. That number is a now $154.5 million, meaning SDIV's assets have <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/markets/bonds/12/10/2995308/etfs-with-amazing-asset-growth">surged almost 55 percent in just two months</a>.

In terms of issuers, WisdomTree (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/wetf#NASDAQ">WETF</a>) has seen an impressive, if under-appreciated burst of inflows into its global dividend products this year. The WisdomTree Emerging Markets Equity Income Fund's (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dem#NYSE">DEM</a>) AUM total has more than doubled this year, representing another feather in the cap of an ETF that <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/markets/bonds/12/09/2905122/5-etfs-with-surging-aum-totals">often outperforms rivals</a> such as the Vanguard MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vwo#NYSE">VWO</a>) and the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/eem#NYSE">EEM</a>).

Four other WisdomTree global dividend ETFs have seen asset growth ranging from 20 percent to 31 percent this year, according to Dorsey Wright. Those funds are the WisdomTree Australia Dividend (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ause#NYSE">AUSE</a>), the WisdomTree DEFA Equity Income Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dth#NYSE">DTH</a>), the WisdomTree Global Equity Income Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dew#NYSE">DEW</a>) and the WisdomTree International Div ex-Financials ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/doo#NYSE">DOO</a>). 

Do not forget small caps. The WisdomTree Emerging Markets SmallCap Dividend Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dgs#NYSE">DGS</a>) had $800 million in <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/12/05/2553741/under-the-hood-an-oldie-but-goodie-dgs-thd-vwo">AUM as of mid-February</a>. That number is now approaching $1.1 billion.

Despite Europe's woes, the First Trust STOXX European Select Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fdd#NYSE">FDD</a>) has seen its AUM total surge almost 64 percent this year. FDD has a 30-day SEC yield of 6.53 percent. The Europe-heavy Guggenheim International Multi-Asset Income ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hgi#NYSE">HGI</a>) is fast approaching $117 million in AUM after finishing 2011 with just $86 million.

Emerging markets dividend ETFs <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/12/09/2878500/has-a-new-era-dawned-for-em-dividend-etfs">are not taking a backseat</a> to developed market rivals. The iShares Emerging Markets Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dvye#NYSE">DVYE</a>) debuted in late February and already has $44.7 million in AUM. That means DVYE has a long way to go to catch the SPDR S&amp;P Emerging Markets Dividend ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ediv#NYSE">EDIV</a>). With $315.3 million in assets, EDIV's AUM total has almost doubled this year.

The Indomitable Rise of Dividend ETFs

Given that the SPDR S&amp;P 500 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/spy#NYSE">SPY</a>) is down 5.5% in the past month, plenty of ETFs have the look of value plays. There are also plenty of style funds that aim to be value propositions as well. Within the large-cap value ETF universe, few are as dominant or as popular as the Vanguard Value Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vtv#NYSE">VTV</a>). 

Simply put, VTV is big, cheap and offers exposure to over 400 stocks, most of which are readily identifiable blue chips. It's also not the only kid on the value ETF block. Here are a few large-cap value ETFs your broker probably neglected to mention.

PowerShares Dynamic Large Cap Value ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pwv#NYSE">PWV</a>)
The PowerShares Dynamic Large Cap Value ETF has been around for over seven years and in terms of headlines, the ETF has toiled in relative obscurity. However, investors have paid attention because PWV is home to almost $401 million in assets under management. Home to 50 stocks, PWV's constituency reads like a "usual suspects" of value funds. Eight of the fund's top-10 holdings are Dow stocks with Abbott Labs (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/abt#NYSE">ABT</a>) and Altria (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/mo#NYSE">MO</a>) the outliers.

A combined 36% allocation to staples and health care names speaks to PWV's value propensities and the fund has outperformed VTV year-to-date. If the broad market keeps falling, PWV will need to find support at $19 or risk significant damage. Be aware of the 0.6% expense ratio.

First Trust Value Line Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fvd#NYSE">FVD</a>)
Not just any old stock can make FVD's cut. Companies must have a market cap north of $1 billion and garner a Value Line safety ranking of one or two to be included. Like PWV, FVD has plenty of AUM, $440.5 million, but only draws occasional mentions from the so-called value experts. The 2.4% yield isn't jaw dropping, but FVD does a good job of mixing nearly 170 stocks together from the mid- and large-cap universes. 

No single names receives an allocation of more than 0.68% and, predictably, utilities and staples combine for over 42% of the ETF's weight. 

iShares Dow Jones International Select Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/idv#NYSE">IDV</a>)
The iShares Dow Jones International Select Dividend Index Fund has by no means anonymous, but these days it might be fair to say the $901.7 million fund is overlooked. It's easy to see why: "International" is part of this fund's name. As such, IDV has been outperformed by plenty of popular U.S. dividend funds this year, including the iShares High Dividend Equity Fund (NSYE: HDV).

A 20.5% allocation to financial aside, IDV's sector lineup, which is heavy on staples, telecom and utilities names, is conservative, the fund features no emerging markets exposure and its beta is barely higher than the S&amp;P 500's. What all that indicates is IDV is being hampered by its Europe exposure. In particular, a 13% combined weight to France and Italy.

Guggenheim Defensive Equity ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/def#NYSE">DEF</a>)
Not much about the Guggenheim Defensive Equity ETF will surprise investors because the fund's name gives away what its objectives are. Staples and utilities combine for over 45% of DEF's weigth and top-10 holdings include defensive names such as Wal-Mart (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/wmt#NYSE">WMT</a>), PepsiCo (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pep#NYSE">PEP</a>) and Verizon (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vz#NYSE">VZ</a>).

To that end, DEF has disappointed in terms of recent performance, losing almost 3% in the past week alone. We suspect the culprit is an over 18% allocation to energy stocks, which in this case, is an allocation to MLPs. Still, DEF's energy exposure is being treated as though it's with traditional oil names. Sometimes the market doesn't do proper examinations before beating up an ETF and that's proving to be the case with DEF.

4 Value ETFs Your Broker Forgot to Mention (DEF, IDV, FVD)

If Wednesday's market action reminds investors of two things it is this pair of ominous notes: Europe is still an epic problem for global financial markets and as a result, it's still a fine idea to establish a few defensive positions.

Playing defense at the sector level often boils down to investing in consumer staples, health care, telecom or utilities stocks and ETFs. All fine choices as returns this year have indicated, but all are known quantities.

Have a look at these ETFs that aren't exactly high-beta that have been holding up nicely in 2011.

PowerShares S&amp;P 500 BuyWrite ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pbp#NYSE">PBP</a>):
The premise here is quite simple: PBP invests about 80% of its assets, sometimes more, in S&amp;P 500 stocks and then writes covered calls on those positions. That leads to an expense ratio that's kind of high at 0.75% and PBP hasn't exactly throttled the S&amp;P 500, but it's a decent conservative play that doesn't grab a ton of press.

PowerShares Buyback Achievers ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pkw#NYSE">PKW</a>):
Another fund with a niche focus, the PowerShares Buyback Achievers ETF tells us there's something to companies that repurchase their own stock. The ETF was up almost 10% year-to-date heading into Wednesday and that's a lot better than what the S&amp;P 500 offers. Top holdings include Dow components Wal-Mart (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/wmt#NYSE">WMT</a>), Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hpq#NYSE">HPQ</a>) and IBM (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ibm#NYSE">IBM</a>).

Russell 1000 Low Volatility ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/lvol#NYSE">LVOL</a>):
The Russell 1000 Low Volatility ETF made its debut in May and has used its low volatility approach to beat the S&amp;P 500 by a couple of percentage points. Investors have noticed as LVOL has hauled in more than $29.1 million in assets under management. Top-10 holdings in the 107-stock ETF include Wal-Mart, IBM, Apple (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aapl#Nasdaq">AAPL</a>) and Johnson &amp; Johnson (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/jnj#NYSE">JNJ</a>).

First Trust Value Line Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fvd#NYSE">FVD</a>):
No surprise that a dividend ETF would make the list, but even though it has over $348 million in AUM, FVD is nowhere close to being the most popular dividend ETF on the market. Someone ought to take note because FVD, which is home to 163 stocks, has easily outpaced the S&amp;P 500 this year with a 5% gain. Utilities and consumer staples account for almost 42% of FVD's sector weight.

Bull case:
Believe it or not, this environment isn't all that bad for these ETFs. It's certainly less bad for them than high-beta fare.

Bear case:
The bear case for these ETFs might mean a bull case for the rest of the market, though PKW and LVOL should be durable regardless of circumstances.

Four Defensive ETFs You're Not Considering, But Should

Ah yes, the illustrious $100 million in assets under management mark. It can be a sign of success even for low volume ETFs. After all, low volume and low assets are the two most common traits of ETFs that disappear.

That means reaching $100 million in AUM indirectly announces an ETF's survival and its status as a legitimate investment option. Of the nearly 1,300 exchange-traded products in the U.S. more than a third (534 to be precise) have over $100 million in AUM.

With the $100 AUM club populated by so many members, it's reasonable to expect a few would fly under the radar. Here are five to help you get started in your search for ETFs with enough assets to keep them trading for a while.

PowerShares Fundamental High Yield Corporate Bond Portfolio (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/phb#NYSE">PHB</a>):
PHB is just a few weeks shy of its fourth birthday and with almost $531 million in AUM, it's not accurate to say this ETF is entirely unknown. Average daily volume of almost 495,000 shares proves that. Still, PHB goes somewhat ignored in the bond ETF discussion. Too bad. The 12-month yield on this fund is 6.5%. Expense ratio: 0.5%.

PowerShares S&amp;P 500 Low Volatility Portfolio (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/splv#NYSE">SPLV</a>):
The PowerShares S&amp;P 500 Low Volatility Portfolio made its debut in May and the low volatility concept was well-timed. It has also been embraced by investors, a fact highlighted by SPLV's $292.2 million in AUM. SPLV's constituents included the 100 lowest volatility S&amp;P 500 members of the past 12 months. The expense ratio of 0.25% is very attractive.

Global X Uranium ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ura#NYSE">URA</a>):
It could have easily been argued that the Global X Uranium ETF was going to be in big trouble following the nuclear fallout in Japan earlier this year. That thesis has proven wrong. URA is still home to over $169 million in AUM and the good news (sort of) is that the ETFs recent woes have been due to the broader market, not nuclear-specific issues. Trading below $9, URA is starting to look like a value play. Expense ratio: 0.69%

Guggenheim Insider Sentiment ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/nfo#NYSE">NFO</a>):
The Guggenheim Insider Sentiment ETF is the epitome of a nice ETF as it attempts to track insider buying at 100 companies. That may seem like an obscure concept to include in a passively managed ETF, but investors apparently like as NFO has over $144 million in AUM and solid daily turnover of more than 103,000 shares. Expense ratio: 0.6%. 

First Trust Value Line Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fvd#NYSE">FVD</a>):
FVD is almost eight years-old and considering its age and that it's a dividend fund, it doesn't grab a lot of headlines. The 168-stock ETF has $282.4 million in AUM and 139,000 in average daily volume. The sector breakdown is typical for a dividend ETF with utilities, industrial and consumer staples leading the way. Expense ratio 0.7%.

Five ETFs With Over $100M in AUM Flying Under The Radar

Investor groups said to be vying for $9.65 billion in U.S. property loans held by Anglo Irish Bank include those led by Blackstone Group (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bx#NYSE">BX</a>), Centerbridge Capital Partners, TPG Capital and Cerberus Capital Management. The deadline for bids was yesterday.

The Dublin-based bank was nationalized two years ago and is now seeking to unload the loans, which are backed by buildings from Boston to Beverly Hills, California. Many loans in the portfolio are troubled. The portfolio has been divided into eight pools, with the largest consisting of $2.26 billion of distressed office and industrial loans.

Blackstone is partnering with Deutsche Bank (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/db#NYSE">DB</a>) and Goldman Sachs (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/gs#NYSE">GS</a>). Centerbridge has turned to American International Group (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aig#NYSE">AIG</a>) and BlackRock (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/blk#NYSE">BLK</a>). Cerberus is working with Oaktree Capital Group, while TPG has tapped Lubert-Adler Partners and Pacific Investment Management Co. 

Winners may be selected as soon as early September.

Blackstone Among Investors Vying for Anglo Irish's U.S. Loans

Blackstone Group (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bx#NYSE">BX</a>) has signed a definitive agreement to take health-care payment services company Emdeon (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/em#NYSE">EM</a>) private in a transaction valued at about $3 billion.

Blackstone will pay $19 a share for the Nashville, Tenn., company; the stock closed Thursday at $18.35. Debt financing is being arranged by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays Capital and Citigroup.

Private equity firm General Atlantic bought a 52% stake in Emdeon in 2006, and Hellman &amp; Friedman acquired the remaining stake in 2008. They took Emdeon public in August 2009. As part of the deal with Blackstone, Hellmann will retain an unspecified minority interest and a seat on the board.

Emdeon offers products and services designed to simplify and streamline health care billing for insurance companies, health care systems and physicians. The company also provides automated billing and document mailing services and insurance card printing, and it offers products specifically for dental and pharmaceutical offices. Revenue last year was $1 billion.

Blackstone Group to Take Emdeon Private

This volatile market is certainly enough to try the patience of conservative investors, but a big broader market decline like the one we're seeing today opens some doors for bargain hunting, particularly in the value ETF universe. 

The typical value ETF is going to be chock full of widely held, familiar stocks that your grandfather love, but names that should also be embraced by investors of all stripes. This genre of ETFs is also perfect for the investor that isn't too keen on stock-picking and is simply looking to build a low-cost, well-diversified portfolio.

Take a look at these five value ETFs.

1) PowerShares Dynamic Large Cap Value Portfolio (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pwv#NYSE">PWV</a>):
This 50-stock ETF has almost $424 million in assets under management and will get you involved with stocks that your grandfather would recommend. Think Pfizer (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pfe#NYSE">PFE</a>), AT&amp;T (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/t#NYSE">T</a>) and plenty of other Dow components. PWV is by no means a “bad” ETF, but the concern is an expense ratio of 0.63%, which hampers the value element a bit.

2) Vanguard Value Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vtv#NYSE">VTV</a>):
VTV is one of several ETFs that shine a light on why Vanguard has become such a major ETF player in a short amount of time. The ETF holds over 400 stocks (typical wide exposure for a Vanguard ETF) and its expense ratio of just 0.12% is lower than 90% of its peers, the firm's Web site says. AT&amp;T, Pfizer, Exxon Mobil (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/xom#NYSE">XOM</a>) and other usual value suspects are found among the top-10 holdings, but the quibble is here VTV's roughly 25% exposure to financials.

3) First Trust Strategic Value Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fdv#NYSE">FDV</a>):
This is another curious 50-stock member of our list. FDV's lineup differs from PWV and VTV as no Dow stocks are found among FDV's top-10 holdings. Four commodities-related name are found among the top-10 FDV constituents, which given the run up in that group, it's arguable that there's value to be had there. A weight of almost 32% to financials and an expense ratio of 0.65% might lead some investors to think twice.

4) Shares Russell 3000 Value Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/iww#NYSE">IWW</a>):
No, IWW doesn't hold 3,000 stocks, but it sure holds a lot (almost 1,950). To its credit, IWW doesn't give a weight above 2.62% to any individual name and while it has plenty of the stocks you'd find in PWV and VTV, we like the 1.85% weight to Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B) class “B” shares. The expense ratio of 0.26% is quite favorable.

5) First Trust Value Line Dividend Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fvd#NYSE">FVD</a>):
Sporting a yield of almost 2.5%, FVD and its 160 stocks offer double-digit exposure to five different sectors (utilities, consumer staples, financials, industrials and healthcare). No one stock gets a weight of more than two-thirds of a percent and while plenty of FVD's holdings are found elsewhere, the ETF does have some interesting surprises in terms of constituents. The 0.7% expense ratio is something to consider though.

1. Commodity ETFs are volatile. In fact, PowerShare DB Commodity Index ETF (DBC) lost 32% in 2008 while iShares S&amp;P GSCI Commodity Index (GSG) lost a whopping 46% in the same year.
