The anchor underpinning trust in the U.S. monetary system, that is the confidence in the Federal Reserve's ability to keep consumer price changes on track, is facing its most severe test in decades, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44537936/consumer-inflation-expectations-skyrocket-in-march-hit-highest-levels-in-32-years">as inflation expectations spiral.</a>
Investors appear to be running out of patience, pouring capital into the one asset that has historically acted like a magnet during moments of economic uncertainty and when the anchor of price stability shows signs of corrosion.
Gold prices – as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) – are rising with unrelenting force, smashing historical records week after week, just as consumer inflation fears experience their sharpest surge in more than three decades.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Is Gold Sending A Warning Signal?</h3>
According to the latest data from the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey, 5- to 10-year inflation expectations jumped to 4.1%—a level unseen since 1993. 
That&#8217;s a stark divergence from the 20-year average of about 3%. Meanwhile, one-year inflation expectations surged to 5.0% from 2.6% just three months ago, as consumers and producers alike face the brunt of higher costs and persistent supply chain disruptions, compounded in part by President Donald Trump&#8216;s tariffs.
"The spike in long-term inflation expectations is really quite shocking," said Robin Brooks, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and former chief economist at the Institute of International Finance, in a post on social media platform X.
The spike in inflation expectations is being fueled in part by the front-loading of imports ahead of anticipated tariff escalations, contributing to a staggering $300 billion trade deficit in just two months, according to macroeconomic research firm The Kobeissi Letter.
In February, the U.S. Core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index—the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge—rose 2.8% year over year, slightly above expectations of 2.7%, undermining hopes of imminent rate cuts from the Fed.
Combined with deteriorating consumer sentiment, this backdrop has some analysts warning about a potential stagflationary environment—where stagnant growth meets persistently high inflation.
Longtime gold bull and economist Peter Schiff wrote on X, "Despite constant media hype and the Trump Administration establishing a Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) Strategic Reserve, Bitcoin is down 11% YTD. Whether investors focus on technical patterns, macro fundamentals or seasonal trends, gold is radiating strength from every possible angle.
Technically, gold's rally has entered a parabolic phase. Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank, noted that a "cup-and-handle formation that took 13 years to develop has seen its target reached within one year. Truly amazing run."

Data revealed Friday by Bank of America&#8217;s chief investment strategist Michael Hartnett shows gold-related investment products saw a record $3.2 billion inflow during the week ending March 21, the largest on record, reflecting a rapid repositioning by investors as inflation fears intensify.
Goldman Sachs analyst Daan Struyven said that in &#8220;tail-risk scenarios,&#8221; if fears about the Federal Reserve's independence or the U.S. dollar's reserve status escalate, central bank demand for gold could surge to 110 tonnes per month.
&#8220;[With] ETF holdings to rebound to pandemic-era levels by end-2025, and positioning to reach the top of its historical range, gold could plausibly trade above $4,200/toz by end-2025 and exceed $4,500/toz within the next 12 months. We view this as a very low-probability event, but include it to illustrate the nonlinear upside to gold prices,&#8221; Goldman Sachs said.
Seasonality could also be a tailwind. According to data analytics firm Seasonality.ai, gold tends to rally between April 1 and April 13, with a 100% win rate over the past 10 years during this specific window. 
The average return in that period has been 2.8%, adding yet another bullish layer to the metal&#8217;s short-term outlook.

'My Spidey Tingles' — Gold's Surge Has Some Investors On Edge

Gold is trading higher today as escalating trade war concerns continue to weigh on global markets.

Risk appetite is on track to end the week on a negative note. Investors continue to trim their equity exposure amid the threat of tariffs and a higher-than-expected increase in the Fed&#8217;s most <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44535109/feds-favorite-inflation-gauge-rises-more-than-expected-in-february-casting-doubt-on-near-term-rate-cuts">closely watched inflation metric.</a>
The latest data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index remained at a 2.5% year-over-year pace in February. Yet, the more telling core PCE measure, which strips out food and energy and is the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, rose from an upwardly revised 2.7% in January to 2.8%, outpacing expectations.
The uptick in core inflation dealt a blow to investor hopes for near-term interest rate cuts, reinforcing the view that the Fed is in no rush to ease policy amid persistent price pressures. 
Adding to the jitters, earlier this week, Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on all foreign auto imports stirred fears of retaliatory trade measures and higher consumer prices.
Investors are now bracing for a potential announcement of "reciprocal tariffs" on April 2, which could further escalate trade tensions and pressure profit margins across multiple sectors.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stocks Slide, Safe Havens Shine</h3>
The S&amp;P 500 index opened lower, with the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) down 0.5%. The Nasdaq 100 – as tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) – fell 0.8%. The Dow eased 0.3%. 
Within mega-cap stocks, Mondelez International Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MDLZ#NASDAQ">MDLZ</a>) was the strongest performer, up 1%, while Target Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TGT#NYSE">TGT</a>) led among the laggards, down 2.5%. 
Gold prices, as mimicked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), jumped 0.7% to trade above $3,070 per ounce, setting a new record high. Investors turned to traditional safe havens in reaction to the inflation surprise and rising geopolitical uncertainty.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) tumbled 2.2%, flipping to weekly losses. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Investor Sentiment The Most Bearish Since October 2022</h3>
The latest AAII Investor Sentiment Survey shows a sharp deterioration in retail investor confidence.January. 
&#8220;The bull-bear spread of the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) sentiment survey has fallen to the lowest level since October of 2022 as those considering themselves bearish far outnumber those that are expecting gains in the equity market over the next six months,&#8221; said Equity Clock in its latest a monthly outlook. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariff Tensions Rattle Automakers</h3>
Trump's proposed 25% auto tariff sent shockwaves across the U.S. auto industry this week, with legacy carmakers bearing the brunt. 
Shares of General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) and Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) plunged about 6% and 4%, respectively, in Thursday's session. 
They were down 0.8% and 1% during early trading Friday, respectively.
In stark contrast, U.S.-based EV manufacturers—building all their vehicles domestically—emerge as winners. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>), and Lucid Group Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LCID#NASDAQ">LCID</a>) are all on track to notch their best weekly performance of 2025, as investors bet on their potential insulation from import tariffs.

On Thursday, March 27th, U.S. markets closed in red amid market jitters over President Trump&#8217;s proposed 25% tariff on imported cars, hitting automakers like GM and Ford hard. In a note shared this week, Goldman Sachs analyst Elsie Peng discussed recent data showing a notable rise in survey-based inflation forecasts and why the Federal Reserve might have to tread carefully despite softening economic conditions.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What&#8217;s Driving Inflation Expectations Higher?</h3>
The University of Michigan&#8217;s closely watched Survey of Consumers revealed a jump in year-ahead inflation expectations to 4.9% in March, up from 4.3% in February. That's the highest reading since November 2022. 
Longer-term expectations, tracking perceived inflation over five to ten years, climbed to 3.9% — a level not seen since 1993.
These figures are particularly concerning because they suggest consumers are not just reacting to short-term price pressures but may be bracing for a more structurally persistent inflation regime. Elevated inflation expectations can become self-fulfilling, as households and businesses adjust behavior in anticipation of future price increases.
It's not just the Michigan survey flashing red. The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index, released Tuesday, showed inflation expectations rising from 5.8% to 6.2% in March.
Yet Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, speaking after the March Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, downplayed the Michigan <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44331170/us-consumer-confidence-plunges-as-inflation-fears-hit-highest-level-since-1993">results, calling them an "outlier." </a>
Still, there&#8217;s more nuance under the hood.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Are Political Biases, Tariffs Distorting The Data?</h3>
Peng said that recent survey results are being distorted by sampling changes and political polarization.
Last year, the University of Michigan switched from a phone-based to an online format, resulting in a greater share of extreme responses.
This shift, combined with how survey medians are calculated, has skewed results toward more extreme inflation views, especially amid news of new tariffs.
"Inflation expectations have become extremely partisan," she said, adding that expectations tend to rise when a respondent's opposing party is in power.
Adjusting for these factors, Goldman Sachs estimates that the 1-year inflation expectation for March should be closer to 3.6% rather than 4.9%, and the 5-10-year expectation should be 3.3% instead of 3.9%.
Even so, Peng said that "these adjusted expectations are still meaningfully higher than late last year," reinforcing the idea that consumers are genuinely rattled by tariff news and persistent inflation in essential categories like food and energy.
Investors who turned to traditional inflation hedges like Treasury inflation-protected securities, tracked by the iShares TIPS Bond ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TIP#NYSE">TIP</a>), or gold, tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), would have seen year-to-date gains of 3% and 14% respectively, in contrast to a 3% decline in the broader S&amp;P 500 index.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What This Means For The Fed's Rate Path</h3>
Goldman's analysis adds another layer to the growing debate over how much room the Fed really has to ease policy this year. 
According to Fed funds futures, markets expect at least three rate cuts in 2024. However, persistently high inflation expectations—even if somewhat overstated—make it harder for the central bank to justify easing unless economic data deteriorate sharply.
"High inflation and high survey-based inflation expectations raise the bar for possible rate cuts this year," Peng said.
Yet, she also added that if economic growth slows enough, Fed officials would still likely proceed with cuts — particularly if market-based inflation expectations remain well-anchored.
In such a scenario, officials could take the same stance they held during the first trade war in 2019: temporary inflation bumps related to tariffs don't pose long-term risks if broader demand weakens.
Based on the latest dot plot, the Federal Reserve projected two additional rate cuts for 2025.
Betting markets on the CFTC-regulated platform Kalshi now reflect expectations for two rate cuts, a shift down from earlier projections of three cuts earlier this month.

Elevated Consumer Inflation Expectations 'Raise The Bar For Possible Rate Cuts This Year': Goldman Sachs

Gold miners dominated <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/mergers-and-acquisitions" rel="noreferrer noopener">mergers and acquisitions (M&amp;A) activity</a> in the metals and mining industry in 2024. Research by S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence found that yellow metal deals accounted for 70% of the total transaction value.
The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.spglobal.com/market-intelligence/en/news-insights/research/mining-mna-in-2024-gold-dominates-mna-space-for-2nd-consecutive-year" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a> showed 62 gold-related transactions, compared to 47 in 2023, or a 32% growth. Although the overall deal value remained relatively close, at $26.36 billion, the $16.5 billion Newmont's (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>) acquisition of Newcrest was an outlier, skewing the numbers for the year before.
Most of 2024's M&amp;A occurred in two top jurisdictions, Australia and Canada. Gold's 27% surge in 2024 further incentivized acquisitions, while geopolitical risks, including the persisting conflict in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East, and rising central bank purchases, encouraged expansions through acquisitions.
Northern Star Resources (OTCPK: NESRF) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42262825/northern-star-acquires-de-grey-for-33-billion-secures-promising-tier-1-asset" rel="noreferrer noopener">$3.26 billion acquisition</a> of De Grey Mining was the largest single transaction, consolidating ownership of one of Australia's most promising gold deposits. The number two spot went to AngloGold Ashanti's (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AU#NYSE">AU</a>) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/09/40790433/anglogold-ashanti-to-acquire-centamin-for-2-5b-to-become-fourth-largest-gold-producer" rel="noreferrer noopener">$2.48 billion takeover</a> of Centamin, strengthening its African presence.
In contrast, despite copper's growing popularity, copper-focused M&amp;A was comparatively subdued, with 16 total deals amounting to $5.7 billion. The largest one was Lundin Mining and BHP's joint <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/07/40031488/bhp-to-unlock-south-american-copper-riches-partners-with-lundin-for-filo-acquisition" rel="noreferrer noopener">$3.03 billion acquisition</a> of Filo Corp. If BHP's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/05/39068033/time-runs-out-for-bhp-deal-49-billion-acquisition-of-anglo-american-proves-too-complex-to-solve" rel="noreferrer noopener">$49 billion bid for </a><a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/05/39068033/time-runs-out-for-bhp-deal-49-billion-acquisition-of-anglo-american-proves-too-complex-to-solve" rel="noreferrer noopener">Anglo American</a> had succeeded, the situation would have been vastly different.
S&amp;P's report also highlighted that while overall deal value remained stable, the absence of a $10 billion-plus megadeal meant that the average transaction size fell to $428.1 million—the lowest in five years and a 24% decline from 2023.
Large miners like Newmont sold smaller portfolio parts, focusing on top assets. At the same time, intermediate producers sought those assets to pursue margin-boosting synergies and growth necessary to break into the big leagues of producing over 1 million ounces annually.
In 2025, S&amp;P predicts further positive momentum in gold M&amp;A as metal prices bid new highs. The sector has already seen notable activity in early 2025, including Equinox Gold's $1.87 billion bid for Calibre Mining. However, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44394574/the-largest-shareholder-opposes-equinoxs-18-billion-acquisition" rel="noreferrer noopener">opposition from Equinox's top shareholder</a>, Van Eck, raises questions about whether the deal will proceed. Van Eck, who holds significant stakes in both companies, cited a lack of operational synergies as a key concern.
Gold Fields'<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44458684/gruyere-power-struggle-gold-fields-surprise-offer-rejected-countermove-denied" rel="noreferrer noopener"> $2.1 billion offer</a> for Gold Road Resources announced this week was rejected as "opportunistic," with Gold Road arguing it undervalued its assets. The deal would have given Gold Fields full control over the Gruyere gold mine, but Gold Road proposed buying out Gold Fields' stake—a counteroffer that was subsequently rejected.

Gold ETFs Face Off: GLD Vs. GDX As They Steadily Climb Amid Bullion Boom

Bulls are storming back into markets with near-record inflows into stocks and gold, brushing aside concerns that trade tariffs could unleash an economic recession and a bear <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">market on Wall Street. </a>
In a note shared Friday, Bank of America's chief investment strategist Michael Hartnett said U.S. stocks recorded their biggest weekly inflow of the year, witnessing $34.1 billion of net capital last week.
&#8220;Monster&nbsp;equity inflows&nbsp;say&nbsp;no one&nbsp;really&nbsp;believes trade war = recession/bear market,&#8221; Hartnett wrote.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why April 2 Matters For Markets</h3>
Hartnett playfully dubbed Apr. 2—the day &#8220;reciprocal tariffs&#8221; take effect—as a potential "peak fear" moment but suggested market direction might hinge more on "whom [Trump] is playing golf with on Apr. 1."
Yet, with U.S. tariffs poised to surge from 2–3% to over 10%, bonds and gold appear far less exposed to a potential &#8220;tariff pandemic&#8221; than U.S. and international equities.
In other words, according to Hartnett, short-term trade-related turbulence can still make gold and bonds safer plays for now.
The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) has posted gains in eleven of the past twelve weeks.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">From COVID Crash To Now: A Five-Year Astonishing Surge</h3>
This week also marked the fifth anniversary of the S&amp;P 500's COVID low at 2,222 points. Since then, the index has gained more than 150%, powered by an era of rapid fiscal expansion and resilient corporate earnings.
Over the same stretch, U.S. nominal GDP has risen by 50%, government spending surged by 65%, and inflation has hit both Wall Street and Main Street. Yet U.S. Treasuries are down about 50% from their pandemic-era highs. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Foreigners Sell US Equities, Rotate Back To Europe, China</h3>
Appetite for equities outside the U.S. is accelerating. Last week, European stocks drew in $4.3 billion, the largest inflow since May 2017 and the fourth biggest ever.
Chinese and German stocks – as tracked by the iShares China Large-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXI#NYSE">FXI</a>) and the iShares MSCI Germany Index Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWG#NYSE">EWG</a>), respectively – are both up more than 20% since the U.S. election, reinforcing Hartnett's claim that investors are downplaying the trade war. 
The resurgence in European equities comes amid collapsing sentiment elsewhere. Hartnett flagged the second-biggest drop in global growth expectations ever and the biggest decline in U.S. equity allocation on record.

'Monster Equity Inflows Say No One Really Believes Trade War,' Bank Of America's Hartnett Says

Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee suggested that the central bank needs to be a steady hand and avoid overreacting, as rising trade tensions, shaky business confidence and stubborn inflation complicate the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">outlook for interest rates.</a>
In an interview with CNBC Friday, Goolsbee indicated that the Federal Reserve must take a long-term approach as the U.S. economy absorbs the potential impact of new tariffs pushed by the Trump administration. 
"There is nothing more uncomfortable than a stagflationary environment," Goolsbee said. "There is no generic answer to it."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariffs Could Be &#8216;Transitory&#8217; — Or Maybe Not</h3>
Asked how the Fed should respond to trade-driven inflation, Goolsbee said it's too early to draw firm conclusions. The key, he said, lies in understanding how long the tariffs stay in place, whether other countries retaliate, and how much of the cost hits U.S. consumers.
"We need to be careful when you say transitory," Goolsbee said. 
"The answer to what ‘transitory' means this time around is whether the tariffs apply to intermediate goods, stoke retaliation, and other factors."
His comment came just two days after Fed Chair Jerome Powell, speaking Wednesday after the Federal Open Market Committee held interest rates steady at 4.25%-4.50%, described tariff-driven inflation as potentially "transitory"—a word that drew scrutiny after the Fed's 2022 miscalculation, when it wrongly assumed early inflation spikes would quickly fade.
Goolsbee noted that imports make up only 11% of U.S. GDP, and that one-time tariffs, if not met with retaliation, are "more likely to be transitory." 
Still, he warned that the larger the tariffs, and the more they resemble supply shocks, "the harder it will be for the Fed to look through them."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Business Investment Is Stalling</h3>
On the ground, Goolsbee said the Fed is already seeing shifts in behavior from companies.
"There has been a decided turn towards anxiety and waiting on capital spending among business contacts," he said, describing a growing trend of hesitation as uncertainty clouds the outlook.
"Markets want information fast but that is not realistic at this moment," he added. "The Fed needs to be a steady hand and take the long view on the economy."
He also said that while current conditions may be a shock, it depends on how long they last, underscoring the need for patience. "When you have a lot of uncertainty, you have to wait for things to clear up."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Room For Cautious Optimism Persists</h3>
Goolsbee maintained a cautiously optimistic view. "There is still a lot of strength in the economy right now," he said, noting progress on both inflation and employment. 
"Unemployment and inflation do reflect progress towards the dual mandate." 
He believes that if the economy continues to cool gradually and inflation trends lower, interest rates could follow. 
"I still believe the economy is resilient, and if there is progress on inflation, rates will be lower in 12 to 18 months." 
Yet, the path forward is far from guaranteed. Goolsbee indicated that if market expectations for long-run inflation begin to rise, or if inflation pushes beyond the initial impact of tariffs, "the Fed would have to revise the outlook."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions</h3>
Treasury yields fell in early Friday trading, with the 10-year benchmark yield hitting 4.21%. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) was up 0.3% during the premarket trading in New York. Long-dated Treasury bonds are up 1.2% for the week. 
The dollar slightly gained, while gold prices dipped 0.3%. On Thursday, the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) closed 0.1% lower, snapping seven straight sessions of gains.
Equity futures slumped, with S&amp;P 500 contracts falling 1.2%. If the index ends the session down more than 0.5 percentage points, the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) will log its fifth consecutive weekly loss—its longest losing streak since May 2022.

Fed's Goolsbee Urges Patience As Trump's Tariffs Stir Fears Of Stagflation: 'We Need To Be Careful When You Say Transitory'

On Thursday, March 20, U.S. markets closed lower as investors digested fresh economic data, Federal Reserve policy signals, and growing tariff concerns amid ongoing volatility. Despite recent selling pressure from soft indicators and weakening sentiment, equities had advanced in three of the previous four sessions.
The Fed held interest rates steady, projected two cuts later this year, and flagged slower growth alongside elevated inflation while uncertainty around trade policy persists.
Economic data showed that the Q4 current account deficit narrowed to $303.9 billion. Jobless claims edged up to 223,000, slightly below expectations, and the Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index fell to 12.5 in March—down from 18.1 but ahead of forecasts.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors declined, led by losses in materials, consumer staples, and tech. Energy and utilities, however, bucked the trend, closing higher.
