Wall Street hovered slightly higher by midday Thursday, giving up a chunk of strong overnight gains in futures markets that were triggered by a federal court ruling suspending a large portion <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45672421/tariffs-blocked-by-court-but-goldman-sachs-says-trump-could-reimpose-them-within-days">of President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs.</a>
Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) led the market after reporting a better-than-feared quarter. The artificial intelligence leader showed resilience in the face of export restrictions. Shares rose 4.3%, ranking as the second-best performer on the S&amp;P 500 and climbing to their highest level in more than three months.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fresh Economic Data Adds To Mixed Tone</h3>
First-quarter U.S. gross domestic product shrank 0.2%, slightly improving from the initial 0.3% estimate. Still, it marked a sharp slowdown compared to the 2.4% growth in the last quarter of 2024, reflecting slower consumer spending and higher imports ahead of the tariffs impact.
More concerning was the labor market. Initial jobless claims for the week ending May 24 jumped to 240,000, exceeding expectations and reaching their highest level in nearly four months. Continuing claims also rose to levels last seen in November 2021, indicating potential softening in employment trends.
The U.S. dollar pulled back, nearly wiping out gains from the prior two sessions as traders reassessed the outlook for interest rates. Meanwhile, Treasury yields dropped, with the 30-year note falling to 4.92% and the 10-year yield easing to 4.42%.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell met with Trump at the White House, the Fed confirmed.
The meeting focused on recent economic developments, including inflation, employment and growth. Powell reiterated that the Fed&#8217;s policy path would remain dependent on incoming data but refrained from commenting on future rate decisions.
Gold climbed 1.1% to $3,320 per ounce, buoyed by lower yields and dollar weakness. Meanwhile, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) fell below $107,000, giving up recent gains as risk appetite moderated in crypto markets.

Stocks Edge Higher After Court Stifles Trump Tariffs, Nvidia Rallies To 3-Month Highs, Bitcoin Dips Below $107K: What's Driving Markets Thursday?

Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HRL#NYSE">HRL</a>) shares are <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/movers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trading lower on Thursday.</a>
The company reported second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of 35 cents, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/n45664815/hormel-foods-reports-second-quarter-fiscal-2025-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">beating the Street view of 34 cents.</a>
Quarterly sales of $2.90 billion (+0.4% year over year) missed the analyst consensus estimate of $2.91 billion. Organic net sales were up by 1%.
Gross profit in the quarter under review decreased to $484.433 million from $503.806 million a year ago.

International segment profit decreased as a temporary shift in export customer mix and <a href="https://s204.q4cdn.com/636391999/files/doc_earnings/2025/q2/supplemental-info/q2-earnings-supplemental-deck.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">softness </a>in Brazil primarily offset meaningful net sales growth.
Retail sales inched lower by 0.3% year over year to $1.783 billion, Food service sales gained 0.5% year over year to $936.44 million, and International sales gained 7% to $178.53 million.
Adjusted operating income in the quarter under review was $264.90 million, lower than $275.91 million. Adjusted Operating Margin in the quarter under review decreased to 9.1% from 9.6% in the year-ago period.
The company exited the quarter with cash and equivalents worth $669.69 million.
Inventories surged to $1.729 billion from $1.576 billion at the end of Oct. 27, 2024.
&#8220;We anticipate strong second-half growth,&#8221; said CEO Jim Snee, highlighting contributions from the turkey portfolio, continued momentum in the Planters brand, growth from leading positions in the marketplace, and ongoing benefits from Transform and Modernize.
Outlook: Hormel Foods narrowed its FY2025 adjusted EPS guidance to $1.58–$1.68 from the prior range of $1.58–$1.72, compared to the $1.61 estimate.
The company raised its FY2025 sales outlook to $12 billion–$12.20 billion from $11.90 billion–$12.20 billion, versus the $12.12 billion estimate.
HRL Price Action: Hormel shares are trading lower by 0.92% to $29.77 at publication on Thursday.

U.S. stock futures jumped on Thursday after ending lower on Wednesday. Futures of major benchmark indices rose over 1% in premarket.
A federal court has<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/05/45660322/trump-tariffs-struck-down-by-federal-court-major-blow-to-white-houses-trade-strategy-report"> invalidated global tariffs</a> enacted by President Donald Trump under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a move that could reshape future U.S. trade policy. 
The U.S. Court of International Trade&#8217;s decision challenged the extensive tariff authority previously wielded by the Trump administration and may impact ongoing trade strategies.
A three-judge panel, with appointees from the Reagan, Obama, and Trump eras, ruled that the IEEPA doesn&#8217;t give the president unlimited power to impose tariffs.
The Trump administration filed an appeal against the ruling in minutes, according to a Reuters report.
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.52% and the two-year bond was at 4.03%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>&#8216;s projections show markets pricing a 97.7% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its June meeting.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, jumped in premarket on Thursday. The SPY was up 1.51% to $596.62, while the QQQ advanced 1.96% to $529.09, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data.
Cues From Last Session:
U.S. stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones dropping over 200 points, as rising Treasury yields countered Tuesday&#8217;s trade optimism.
All S&amp;P 500 sectors ended in the red, with utilities, materials, and energy stocks experiencing the most significant declines.
In retail, Macy&#8217;s Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/M#NYSE">M</a>) adjusted its annual forecast downward, citing impacts from tariffs, a slight dip in consumer discretionary spending, and an intensified promotional environment.
Conversely, Abercrombie &amp; Fitch Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ANF#NYSE">ANF</a>) delivered stronger-than-expected first-quarter earnings. Economic data showed the composite manufacturing index in the U.S. Fifth District improving to -9 in May from -13 in April.

Insights From Analysts:
After the Federal Court struck down Trump&#8217;s tariffs, Craig Shapiro, a macro strategist at the Bear Traps Report, said that &#8220;Without tariff revenues, there is a big beautiful hole in the big beautiful budget bill.&#8221;
This implied the administration&#8217;s promise to fund the deficit created by the tax bill through tariff revenue and the Department of Government Efficiency savings.
Shapiro&#8217;s post highlights a budget crisis that could be triggered by the removal of tariff revenue.

Bob Elliott, CIO at Unlimited Funds, highlighted an <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/market-summary/25/05/45641879/stock-market-is-pricing-a-never-before-seen-divergence-as-equities-and-bonds-run-it-hot-amid-gloomy-outlook-by-bottom-up-analysts">unprecedented "divergence"</a> which he has "never seen" in his professional career outside of typical cyclical bottoms. 
According to him, despite the seemingly extreme market optimism, the perspective from professionals analyzing data from the ground up painted a far more subdued picture.
He explained that aggressive market pricing stands in stark contrast to the pessimistic views held by bottom-up analysts, companies, and economists.
Elliott highlighted in an X thread that corporate earnings revisions for U.S. large-cap companies have notably collapsed, reaching their weakest point since the COVID-19 pandemic. Global earnings revisions also remain quite subdued, despite a marginal recent uptick in negativity.
Projections for 2025 earnings growth, which are typically skewed positively until just before the period, are currently penciled in at a mere 7%.

Gold Spot US Dollar fell 0.28% to hover around $3,279.89 per ounce. Its last record high stood at $3,500.33 per ounce. The U.S. Dollar Index spot was higher by 0.14% at the 100.0170 level.
Asian markets closed higher on Thursday as South Korea's Kospi, China&#8217;s CSI 300, India's S&amp;P BSE Sensex, Japan's Nikkei 225, Australia's ASX 200, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng indices rose. European markets were mixed in early trade.

How Hormel Foods, Hershey, And Horace Mann Educators Can Put Cash In Your Pocket

Government health agencies are pushing forward an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/hhs-fda-phase-out-petroleum-based-synthetic-dyes-nations-food-supply" rel="noreferrer noopener">overhaul of food additive rules</a> to remove petroleum-based artificial dyes from products sold in the U.S.
The effort, revealed on Wednesday, falls under health secretary&nbsp;Robert F. Kennedy Jr's larger "Make America Healthy Again" plan, which seeks to boost national health by tightening dietary guidelines.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services introduced a roadmap outlining the shift toward plant-based food colorings across the industry.

"For too long, some food producers have been feeding Americans petroleum-based chemicals without their knowledge or consent," said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
"These poisonous compounds offer no nutritional benefit and pose real, measurable dangers to our children's health and development. That era is coming to an end.
As part of the plan, approvals for two synthetic dyes, Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B, will be rescinded in the coming months.
Regulators are coordinating with manufacturers to eliminate six commonly used food colorings: FD&amp;C Red No. 40, FD&amp;C Yellow Nos. 5 and 6, FD&amp;C Green No. 3, and FD&amp;C Blue Nos. 1 and 2 by the end of next year.
The FDA also encouraged companies to retire FD&amp;C Red No. 3 ahead of the current 2027-2028 target. To support a seamless shift, the agency intends to authorize four new naturally derived color additives in the near future.
It is also speeding up the evaluation process for substitutes such as butterfly pea flower extract, Galdieria blue, gardenia blue, and calcium phosphate. In addition, updated regulatory guidelines are being developed to assist manufacturers in meeting the new requirements.
In collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the FDA will undertake a broad research effort to assess how food dyes influence children's development and well-being.

During recessions, the Consumer Staples sector stock prices are primarily influenced by earnings per share (EPS) rather than sales growth.
Analysis shows that forward EPS estimates account for over 90% of stock price movement across key subsectors like Beverages, Household &amp; Personal Care (HPC), Packaged Food, and Tobacco, with the correlation being the tightest Beverages and HPC.
The analysts noted that this highlights the critical importance of earnings strength when evaluating stock performance in uncertain economic conditions.
A review of six past recessions reveals that certain Consumer Staples stocks consistently outperformed the S&amp;P 500.
Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPB#NYSE">CPB</a>), Colgate-Palmolive Co. Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HRL#NYSE">HRL</a>) shares are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/premarket" rel="noreferrer noopener">trading higher in the premarket session on Thursday.</a>
The company reported <a href="https://s204.q4cdn.com/636391999/files/doc_earnings/2025/q1/earnings-result/hormel-earnings-release-q4-2024.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">first-quarter</a> adjusted earnings per share of 35 cents, missing the street view of 38 cents. Quarterly sales of $2.99 billion outpaced the analyst consensus estimate of $2.93 billion. Net sales fell 0.2% year over year, while organic sales rose by 1%.
Adjusted operating margin in the quarter under review contracted to 8.5% from 9.8%. Gross profit in the quarter under review decreased to $475.232 million from $508.733 million a year ago.

&#8220;In Retail, flagship and rising brands such as SPAM, Applegate, Hormel Black Label, and Jennie-O grew volume while gaining share in their respective categories,&#8221; said Jim Snee, president and chief executive officer.
&#8220;We are pleased with the significant, sequential market recovery&nbsp;the&nbsp;Planters&nbsp;business delivered in the&nbsp;first quarter&nbsp;and expect continued improvements from the brand. However, as anticipated, the&nbsp;first quarter&nbsp;was pressured as we continued to recover from the snack nuts supply disruption and lapped a full year of whole bird turkey market compression,&#8221; said Snee.&nbsp;
Hormel Foods exited the quarter with cash and equivalents worth $866.4 million, while long-term debt (less current maturities) contracted slightly to $2.850 billion.
Outlook: Hormel Foods reiterated FY25 revenue outlook between $11.9 billion and $12.2 billion, compared with the $12.08 billion estimate. The company expects adjusted EPS to range from $1.58 to $1.72, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance">compared to the $1.64 estimate.</a>
Price Action: HRL shares are trading higher by 1.01% to $29.02 premarket at last check Thursday.
