President-elect Donald J. Trump <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care/24/11/42077057/trump-picks-dr-oz-as-centers-for-medicare-and-medicaid-services-administrator">announced on Tuesday afternoon</a> that he will nominate TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz to serve as the administrator of the Centers for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/24/11/42044642/trump-appears-frustrated-as-elon-musk-chimes-in-on-treasury-secretary-adds-more-names-to-a-list-of-potential-picks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)</a>. The appointment is among a string of TV hosts — mostly from Fox News — to be chosen to join Trump's cabinet.
In a statement, Trump said the celebrity TV host will "work closely with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to take on the illness industrial complex."
Though a household name due to his long-running &#8220;The Dr. Oz Show" (2009-2022), Oz got into politics when he <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/22/06/27558526/dr-oz-to-face-john-fetterman-in-unprecedented-unpredictable-pa-senate-race-and-cannabis-is-on-th">unsuccessfully ran for Senate</a> against now Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) in 2022, during which time the good doctor seemed to forge an alliance with Trump.
At the time, Scientific American&nbsp;<a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/dr-oz-shouldnt-be-a-senator-or-a-doctor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wrote </a>Dr. Oz should not&nbsp;be a senator or a doctor, noting that his misinformation had already tarnished medicine and would do much worse in the halls of Congress.&nbsp;"Dr. Oz&nbsp;has long pushed misleading, science-free and unproven alternative therapies such as homeopathy, as well as fad diets, detoxes and cleanses."
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Donald Trump Begs To Differ</h1>
News outlets are quick to<a href="https://www.axios.com/2024/11/19/trump-dr-oz-cms-cabinet"> point out</a> that Dr. Oz has no experience running a large government body like the CMS but that seems to not matter because, according to the President-elect.
&#8220;There may be no Physician more qualified and capable than Dr. Oz to Make America Healthy Again,&#8221; Trump said in a statement, referring to the words of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/robert-f-kennedy-jr">Robert Kennedy Jr</a>. who will, if confirmed run the Dept. of Health and Human Services.

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Dr. Oz On Cannabis</h1>
The multimillionaire TV host initially called cannabis a &#8220;mixed bag for easing pain.&#8221; But a recent discussion with&nbsp;Michael Roizen,&nbsp;M.D., of the Wellness Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/24/08/40492959/trump-endorsed-dr-oz-on-medical-marijuana-and-pain-give-it-a-try">Oz said</a>, &#8220;Our advice: If your physician recommends it to manage pain, especially if you&#8217;re 65 and older, give it a try.&#8221;
While Dr. Oz cautions against cannabis consumption for recreational purposes, he said he believes marijuana for pain represents a "safer solution than, for example, narcotics in many cases."
During his Senate race, Dr. Oz often criticized Fetterman&#8217;s support for cannabis legalization though several years earlier he himself <a href="https://www.marijuanamoment.net/dr-oz-claims-dea-and-fda-blame-each-other-for-keeping-marijuana-illegal/">referred to cannabis</a>&nbsp;as "one of the most underused tools in America" and that the U.S. should&nbsp;"completely change our policy on marijuana."

Donald Trump has announced several picks for potential nominees for his White House administration since winning the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/11/41768178/donald-trump-defeats-kamala-harris-to-win-2024-election">2024 presidential election.</a>
While the picks still have to be nominated and approved in many cases, voters were recently asked to share whether they approve of or disapprove of his current selections.
What Happened: Trump's announced picks have generated plenty of discussion on social media and across the political spectrum with the announced picks of Matt Gaetz <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/legal/24/11/41956594/matt-gaetz-is-trumps-attorney-general-pick-would-be-top-cop-is-under-house-ethics-investigation">as attorney general</a> and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. leading the Health and Human Services generating the most buzz.
A new Morning Consult <a href="https://pro.morningconsult.com/analysis/trump-transition-nominees-approval">poll </a>asked voters how they think Trump is doing with his transition.
The poll found that 54% of voters approve of Trump's handling of his transition since winning the 2024 election, with 38% disapproving and 8% saying they don't know or had no opinion.
Split by political party, Republicans showed a higher approval rating (93%) of Trump's handling of the transition compared to Democrats (20%). Independent voters were more split with 46% approving, 40% disapproving and 14% having no opinion or saying they don't know.
Trump's 54% approval rating is only six points below the 60% approval rating President Joe Biden had four years ago from a Morning Consult poll.

Why It's Important: The selection of Gaetz could face the most scrutiny by members of Congress if he is formally nominated. The Republican resigned from Congress the same day Trump announced the attorney general role for him.
Gaetz was investigated by the Department of Justice for sex trafficking before it declined to charge the congressman.
The former Congressman was under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for sexual misconduct. Allegations against the Trump ally include sexual misconduct, illicit drug use, accepting improper gifts and more. Gaetz has denied the allegations.
Gaetz is the only person in the poll to receive a higher percentage of disapproval than approval.
When it comes to disapproval, Gaetz ranks first at 41% followed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk at 40%.
Musk, who has been named by Trump to lead the Department of Government Efficiency and cut government spending, also has the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/politics/24/11/41993300/elon-musks-favorability-with-gop-voters-nearly-as-high-as-j-d-vance-how-views-of-billionaire-changed-among-political-parties">highest approval rating</a> at 45%, tied with Marco Rubio.
Musk has the lowest percent of voters saying no opinion, showing how opinionated voters are of his potential selection. Musk maintains a positive net approval rating of 45% to a disapproval rating of 40%.
Kennedy Jr. ranks among the highest for approval at 44% and for disapproval at 39%. Like Musk, Kennedy also has a low amount of voters saying they have no opinion at 16%.
Huckabee has the highest net approval rating in the poll at 13 points.
This poll was taken before Trump announced Dr. Mehmet Oz as his choice as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care/24/11/42077057/trump-picks-dr-oz-as-centers-for-medicare-and-medicaid-services-administrator">Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator</a>.

President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday said he will nominate celebrity physician Dr. Mehmet Oz to lead the Centers for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/24/11/42044642/trump-appears-frustrated-as-elon-musk-chimes-in-on-treasury-secretary-adds-more-names-to-a-list-of-potential-picks">Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). </a>
The Details: Trump announced Dr. Oz as his pick for CMS administrator in a statement Tuesday afternoon.&nbsp;
"Our broken Healthcare System harms everyday Americans, and crushes our country's budget," Trump said.&nbsp;
"Dr. Oz will be a leader in incentivizing disease prevention, so we get the best results in the world for every dollar we spend on health care in our Great Country," Trump said. "He will also cut waste and fraud within our country's most expensive government agency, which is a third of our nation's health care spend, and a quarter of our entire national budget."

Dr. Oz has a history of offering unproven medical advice and has said his goal was to "empower" Americans to take control of their health, according to the New York Times. He <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/26/us/politics/dr-oz-medical-advice.html">promoted the use</a> of hydroxychloroquine as an effective treatment against COVID-19 in the early days of the pandemic, before reversing course and advising patients to wait for evidence from randomized trials.&nbsp;
CMS, an agency within the Health and Human Services Department (HHS), oversees several major health care programs including Medicare, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program and the Healthcare.gov insurance marketplace exchange. Federal spending on the four programs is $1.6 trillion, or nearly 25% of the entire federal budget.
Last week, Trump announced his intention to nominate another <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/11/41822473/trumps-potential-health-czar-robert-f-kennedy-jr-rattles-vaccine-stocks-shoot-first-reaction">controversial figure,</a> Robert Kennedy Jr., to head the HHS.&nbsp; Other unconventional selections include Trump's choices of former Rep. Matt Gaetz for U.S. attorney general and Fox News host Pete Hegseth for defense secretary.

Following Trump&#8217;s announcement, investors may want to monitor shares of UnitedHealth Group Inc.
