The frequently changing policies and consumers' lack of knowledge about how tariffs work and are applied have created the "perfect storm for cybercriminals," Fortalice Solutions CEO Theresa Payton told <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/19/tariff-scams-red-flags.html">CNBC</a>.&nbsp;
The new tariff scams typically look like "tariff payment request" texts or emails that appear to be coming from retailers, delivery services, or government agencies. Experts told the outlet that the scams work because consumers expect to be paying more due to the tariffs, but they aren't really sure how those tariffs work.&nbsp;

James Lee, the president of the Identity Theft Resource Center, told CNBC that it's not unusual for scammers to use a government action as the basis of a scam. Cybercriminals will "use the fact that people don't know a lot about tariffs" for their own gain, he said.
BforeAI's PreCrime Labs team said in a recent <a href="https://bfore.ai/imported-risk-cybercriminals-exploit-tariff-uncertainty/">report</a> that there had been 301 domain registrations from cybercriminals within the first three months of 2025. Some of these domains simply spread misinformation about tariffs, while others were full-fledged financial schemes aimed at businesses and consumers.
One particularly concerning site was a newly registered phishing domain titled "US Customs and Tariffs" that leads visitors to believe they are required to make payments to a legitimate governmental entity.
"Such payment requests are likely to be spread using email or messaging campaigns with a theme of urgent, pending payments, directing victims to the fraudulent site where their actions will result in financial losses," the report said.

However, in some cases, consumers might legitimately be required to pay extra fees for products purchased from other countries. The customs duties can be charged by <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/internet-purchases#">US Customs and Border Protection</a> as a type of processing fee that must be paid in order to release an imported good.&nbsp;
"That's not common, but it's also not unusual," Lee told CNBC. "It really does depend on what it is, where it's coming from."
Some consumers have received legitimate payment requests from carrier companies in order to receive their foreign shipments, according to the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/05/16/tariff-bills-ups-dhl-shoppers-fees/">Washington Post</a>.&nbsp;

Bernie Hart, the vice president of customs at Flexport, told CNBC this is because some carriers are acting as the importer of record, meaning they are responsible for any duties, taxes and fees that are applied to the delivery.&nbsp;

On the monthly timeframe, Qualcomm is currently in Phase 10, after completing a massive 237% breakout move in Phase 9—breaking out of a long-term consolidation between Phases 4 to 8.
According to the Adhishthana model, peaks in Phase 10 often form between the 18th and 23rd bars. Qualcomm topped out on the 19th bar at $230.63, followed by a ~35% correction. However, this peak will only be confirmed if the Phase 9 low of $58 is broken, which has not happened yet.
If Qualcomm continues to hold above the C9 midpoint and the Level of Nirvana as identified in the weekly charts, then $230.63 may not be the ultimate peak. Instead, a higher high could materialize in Phase 11.

e.l.f. Beauty, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ELF#NYSE">ELF</a>) is gapping up on Thursday. The company agreed to acquire Hailey Bieber's Rhode for $1 billion. The move adds diversification to its portfolio — and investors responded positively.

Support levels can turn into resistance levels because of remorseful buyers.

These are people who purchased shares at the support and regretted doing so when the price dropped. They decided to hold on to their losing positions, but they also decided that if they could eventually get out at breakeven, they would do so.
So, when the stock rallied back to $90, they placed sell orders. The large concentration of these orders made resistance form at the same price that had been support.
This morning's move higher may have broken another resistance level. $101.85 was support in October and November so there may be resistance around it. If the shares can clear this price and stay above it, it could be a signal that further moves up in price may be coming.
If the price is higher than the resistance, it will show that those sellers are gone. They may have finished their orders or canceled them.
Either way, whenever a large amount of supply (sell orders) is removed from a market, buyers will be forced to outbid each other and pay premiums to draw sellers back in.
This price action could mean that the move higher in ELF will continue.

In the fast-paced world of trading, many novice traders eagerly jump into the market lured by attractive promises of tight spreads, lowered fees, and even &#8220;zero commissions&#8221; from brokers. However, beneath the veneer of these enticing offers lie potential pitfalls that can catch unsuspecting new market entrants off guard.&nbsp;

Let me mention a few typical practices in the key areas where these hidden costs and manipulative essences come into play.
First of all, the broad definition of hidden costs. For example, commissions may not be as simple and straightforward as they may appear at first. Some brokers have a fixed fee for each trade, while others include their commissions in the spread. Even those "zero-commission" brokers often make up for it by widening the spreads.
Then I would mention overnight fees (or swap rates): if one holds a leveraged position overnight, they'll incur interest charges that can vary based on market conditions and the broker's policies.
Another type of those ubiquitous hidden costs is deposit &amp; withdrawal fees, where certain brokers might charge their clients additionally when the latter move their funds in or out, especially if they use specific payment methods.
Yet one more example of a vicious practice is the so-called inactivity fees. If someone's account sits idle for a while, they could face hidden monthly charges as well, which may be mentioned in fine print in the agreement, or wouldn't be mentioned at all.
Then comes the above mentioned slippage. It happens when the price at which a trader places an order doesn't align with what they expected, often due to market fluctuations or those pesky, often unmentioned, delays in execution. In other words, sometimes orders get executed at a price that's worse than what was expected, especially during volatile market conditions, which can cost traders more than they planned.
So, a universal advice for traders would be to look beyond those appealing advertised spreads and really examine the broker's overall pricing model, execution quality, and transparency. A low spread doesn't mean much if execution delays and unfavorable slippage end up hurting a trade's profitability.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Trade You Click Isn't Always the Trade You Get</h2>
There are a number of other practices that may not necessarily be related to hidden trading fees, but still be considered a problem in the eyes of a trader.&nbsp;
One of them is widening spreads during major news events or material information releases. Instead of keeping trading conditions steady, some brokers tend to widen spreads significantly when volatility kicks in, making it more expensive for traders to jump in or out of their positions.
Asymmetric slippage is another unwelcome surprise that can show up in a trader's monthly report. If a broker frequently applies negative slippage (executing trades at less favorable prices) but never offers positive slippage (providing better prices when they can), it's a warning sign that they might be tweaking execution.

A smart and resourceful trader always takes suspiciously attractive offers with a grain of salt. To safeguard the capital from various strings attached and broker misdeeds, it is crucial to ask the right questions and take proactive steps.
A basic set of self-control questions usually includes the following:
Do I really get my broker's fee structure?&nbsp;
Don't just look at the advertised spreads — dig into commissions, overnight fees, deposit/withdrawal charges, and any inactivity fees.
