The Fund seeks to track the investment results of the Russell 1000 Value Index (the Underlying Index), which measures the performance of large- and mid-capitalization value sectors of the U.S. equity market, as defined by FTSE Russell (the Index Provider or Russell). The Underlying Index is a subset of the Russell 1000 Index, which measures the performance of the large- and mid-capitalization sector of the U.S. equity market, as defined by Russell. As of March 31, 2024, the Underlying Index represented approximately 45 percent of the total market value of the Russell 1000 Index. The Underlying Index measures the performance of equity securities of Russell 1000 Index issuers with lower price-to-book ratios, lower sales-per-share historical growth and lower forecasted growth relative to all issuers whose securities are included in the Russell 1000 Index. As of March 31, 2024, a significant portion of the Underlying Index is represented by securities of companies in the financial and industrials industries or sectors. Value Stocks Gain Ground As Inflation, Recession Fears Grow: 4 ETFs To Capitalize On The Trend

Value stocks have flipped the market script on their growth counterparts so far this year, with the Russell 1000 Value Index outperforming the Russell 1000 Growth Index by 11% in just three short months.
The iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWD#NYSE">IWD</a>), which tracks the Russell 1000 Value, and the iShares Russell 1000 Growth ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWF#NYSE">IWF</a>) for the Russell 1000 Growth, similarly have a little under 10% gap this year so far, in favor of the value fund.
The last time this happened was during the bear market of 2022, when rising rates, persistent inflation, and unjustifiably high valuations sent investors scurrying for safer options to park their funds. In 2024, however, growth stocks regained their momentum, aided by rate cuts and strong momentum across tech and AI stocks.
Now, as chaos reigns on Wall Street, with tariffs, geopolitical tensions, and even <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/03/44554304/goldman-sachs-raises-us-recession-risk-to-35-expects-inflation-at-3-5-in-2025-amid-tariff-uncertainties-economist-mohamed-el-erian-highlights-stagflationary-twist">fresh recessionary fears</a> cropping up, investors are once again finding safety in value. But, is this here to stay, or just a fleeting trend that is waiting to turn around?

Value stocks, by their very definition, are those that are currently undervalued, relative to their assets, earnings, and future prospects. So, during periods of volatility and uncertainty, they have limited downside risks, especially when compared to growth stocks.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">More Reasons For Value To Rebound In 2025</h2>
According to Tony DeSpirito, the Chief Investment Officer at BlackRock (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLK#NYSE">BLK</a>), another reason why values are set to outperform this year is simply the remarkable run-up that growth stocks have experienced in recent years. Growth stocks now represent nearly 40% of the S&amp;P 500, significantly higher than the historical average of 24%.
This means that a correction is warranted, as investors will look for diversification and more exposure to value picks, even without the existing market turmoil and uncertainties. 
DeSpirito further cites the valuation gap between the Russell growth and value indexes, which is now at its widest since December 2000, which kickstarted a three-year bear market through 2002, during which value stocks outperformed growth.

On CNBC's &#8220;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2024/12/23/final-trades-zoom-video-lockheed-martin-and-the-iwd.html">Halftime Report Final Trades</a>,&#8221; Joseph M. Terranova of Virtus Investment Partners said Zoom Communications Inc. On Dec. 19, Jefferies analyst Samad Samana upgraded Zoom Communications from Hold to Buy and raised the price target from $85 to $100.

On Dec. 16, Lockheed Martin revealed the launch of the seventh Lockheed Martin-designed and built Global Positioning System (GPS) III satellite, GPS III SV07, at 7:52 p.m. ET. President-elect Donald Trump&#8216;s victory has fueled a rally in equities. This is likely to sustain as the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42158682/donald-trumps-win-positive-for-financials-energy-sector-as-pro-growth-effects-will-outweigh-inflationary-pressures-says-analyst">administration plans</a> on &#8220;tax cuts and deregulation will lead to higher corporate earnings,&#8221; said Yogesh Kansal, chief business officer at fintech company, Appreciate. He added that highly regulated sectors like oil and gas will benefit under Trump&#8217;s administration.
What Happened: While tax cuts and deregulation are positive for the stock markets, the Trump administration&#8217;s take on immigration and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42178994/trump-says-he-will-impose-25-tariffs-on-canada-mexico-on-first-day-of-office-and-extra-tariffs-on-china-until-they-pay-attention">higher tariffs</a> have an opposing effect on the markets.
As per Kansal, with the deportation of immigrants, &#8220;the cost of labor will go up for all companies, which basically means the profitability of companies will go down.&#8221; Additionally, he said that with tariffs, the &#8220;stock prices could be lower&#8221; because of a shift in &#8220;global demand&#8221;.
Morgan Stanley, in its note dated Dec. 3, also cautions that concerns over trade tariffs, immigration policies, fiscal sustainability, and how the scope and timing of new policies may constrain the broader economic outlook. The global financial services firm anticipates growth and innovation, particularly in the technology and natural gas sectors.

Why It Matters: According to Kansal, highly regulated industries like &#8220;energy, oil and gas, health care, and banking will be seeing tailwinds&#8221; because of the deregulation attempts.
Invesco S&amp;P 500 Equal Weight ETF (ACRA: RSP) has risen by 17.3% on a year-to-date basis. While, the iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWD#NYSE">IWD</a>) and Vanguard High Dividend Yield Index ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VYM#NYSE">VYM</a>) advanced by 18.56% and 18.96%, respectively, in the same period, underperforming the S&amp;P 500 on a year-to-date basis, which has grown by 28.41% in the same period.
On the other hand, ProShares S&amp;P 500 Ex-Energy ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPXE#NYSE">SPXE</a>) grew by 28.85% year-to-date, outperforming the index.
Other analysts have also said that Trump&#8217;s victory will lead to a boom in the energy sector. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42158682/donald-trumps-win-positive-for-financials-energy-sector-as-pro-growth-effects-will-outweigh-inflationary-pressures-says-analyst">According to</a> Mario Georgiou, CFA and executive director, head of investments at InCred Global Wealth U.K., "deregulation supporting oil production and geopolitical risks could sustain elevated oil prices and relative valuations are attractive."
Even though the energy sector has underperformed the broader markets in 2024, "fundamentally, companies are shareholder friendly with 8-12% shareholder yields, have strong balance sheets with low net debt to EBITDA ratios and high free cash flow yields of 6.50% and above," he adds.
As per Morgan Stanley, the energy sector faces a divided future. Trump&#8217;s deregulation could benefit traditional energy, but the outlook for oil is uncertain due to potential oversupply and weak global demand, especially from China. In contrast, natural gas may see growth from strong European demand and increased domestic use for electrification and AI-powered data centers. The clean energy sector could face challenges, if Trump rollbacks Biden&#8217;s 2022 Inflation Reduction Act tax credits. However, a full repeal seems unlikely due to the benefits for Republican states.
Kansal, on the other hand, was also positive about the technology sector given the rise in the A-I frenzy. &#8220;The biggest factor that is driving the U.S. stock market right now is AI. There&#8217;s a lot of activity, lots of investment that has gone in because of the expectation of AI increasing productivity,&#8221; he said.
However, Georgiou said, &#8220;Rising bond yields increase the discount rate applied to future earnings, disproportionately affecting high-growth sectors like technology. We therefore prefer higher quality tech companies, avoiding highly leveraged, unprofitable tech stocks. This does not make us underweight Technology, as there are sufficient high-quality companies in this sector to make up the allocation with.&#8221;
Major AI payers in the U.S. stock markets include Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) with a 195.7% year-to-date gain and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) with stock gains of 19.6% in the same period.
Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) rose by 51.42% and 26.46% year-to-date, respectively. &#8220;So I think in the next 12 months, software as well as hardware, technology industries will do well including FAANG stocks and Nvidia,&#8221; Kansal added.

Markets have reacted positively to President-elect Donald Trump&#8216;s victory and have been trading higher than the pre-election levels. However, slower-than-expected deregulation and shallower tax cuts could impact the markets, Morgan Stanley's Global Investment Office believes investors should keep an eye on the following areas:
Energy As per Morgan Stanley, the energy sector faces a divided future. Trump&#8217;s deregulation could benefit traditional energy, but oil&#8217;s outlook is uncertain due to potential oversupply and weak global demand, especially from China. In contrast, natural gas may see growth from strong European demand and increased domestic use for electrification and AI-powered data centers. The clean energy sector could face challenges, if Trump rollbacks Biden&#8217;s 2022 Inflation Reduction Act tax credits. But a full repeal seems unlikely due to the benefits for Republican states.

Defense U.S. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/24/12/42369000/booz-allen-and-palantir-partner-to-drive-us-defense-operations">defense</a> spending is expected to stay robust amid rising geopolitical tensions, says Morgan Stanley. However, European defense stocks have outperformed U.S. ones due to uncertainty about U.S. NATO involvement and increased spending by other NATO members.
Trump during his first post-election network interview with NBC News on Sunday said &#8220;If they&#8217;re paying their bills, and if I think they&#8217;re treating us fairly, absolutely, I would stay with NATO.&#8221;
Moreover, technological advancements in cybersecurity, AI, drones, and other areas are also favoring smaller, specialized companies over traditional defense giants, added Morgan Stanley.
As per the <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data, the S&amp;P 500 Aerospace &amp; Defense Industry Index has risen by 15.78% year-to-date, whereas Lockheed Martin Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LMT#NYSE">LMT</a>), RTX Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RTX#NYSE">RTX</a>) and iShares U.S. Aerospace &amp; Defense ETF (ACRA: ITA) have grown by 12.48%, 38.45% and 20.15%, respectively in the same period.

Technology And Communication According to Morgan Stanley, the technology sector may see mixed outcomes. Cryptocurrencies and AI industries could benefit from Trump&#8217;s favorable stance. Whereas investments in reshoring semiconductors through the CHIPS Act may strengthen those areas, highlighting AI as a national security priority. However, social media and information companies may continue facing regulatory and antitrust challenges.

He considers inflationary policies such as tariffs and immigration impacts as headwinds, leading to a steepening yield curve, and higher term premiums.
&#8220;Financials offer an attractive risk-reward and that this recent post-election rally has room to run,&#8221; added Georgiou. According to him &#8220;financials are not only well positioned to capture the benefits of the above-mentioned Trump tailwinds, but are also less impacted / would even benefit from the Trump headwinds.&#8221;

Meanwhile, Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (ACRA: XLF), Vanguard Financials ETF (ACRA: VFH), iShares U.S. Financials ETF (ACRA: IYF), and SPDR S&amp;P Bank ETF (ACRA: KBE), have returned over 30% year-to-date in 2024 outperforming the S&amp;P 500 Index&#8217;s 26% run.

Other sectors that Georgiou prefers, include energy. According to him &#8220;deregulation supporting oil production and geopolitical risks could sustain elevated oil prices and relative valuations are attractive.&#8221;
Even though the energy sector has underperformed the broader markets in 2024, &#8220;fundamentally, companies are shareholder friendly with 8-12% shareholder yields, have strong balance sheets with low net debt to EBITDA ratios and high free cash flow yields of 6.50% and above,&#8221; he adds.
Invesco S&amp;P 500 Equal Weight ETF (ACRA: RSP), iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF (ACRA: IWD), Vanguard High Dividend Yield Index ETF (ACRA: VYM) and ProShares S&amp;P 500 Ex-Energy ETF (ACRA: SPXE) have all underperformed the S&amp;P 500 on a year-to-date basis.

What Happened: On Tuesday, Airbnb Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ABNB#NASDAQ">ABNB</a>) and Norwegian Cruise Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NCLH#NYSE">NCLH</a>) received analyst upgrades.
Wedbush upgraded Airbnb Inc. from Neutral to Outperform, raising the price target from $160 to $165. 
Analyst Scott Devitt suggested investors should capitalize on this period of relative weakness, seeing potential upside to near-term estimates following conservative second-quarter guidance.
He emphasized Airbnb&#8217;s strong growth prospects and significant potential as the company expanded beyond its core offerings. Wedbush highlighted Airbnb&#8217;s leading competitive position in the alternative accommodation market and opportunities for growth in adjacent products and services.
"We believe the company's expansion will start with the relaunch of Airbnb experiences, with an announcement likely within the next 6-12 months," Wedbush noted. The analyst increased estimates for the second quarter and second half revenue and adjusted EBITDA by 1% and 3%, respectively.
Shares of Airbnb Inc. rose 1.69% to $146.91 on Tuesday at publication.
Mizuho Securities upgraded Norwegian Cruise Holdings from Neutral to Buy, raising the price target from $21 to $24.
Executive Director Ben Chaiken noted a shift in sentiment towards the cruise line, driven by compelling valuations, improving business efficiency and a favorable industry backdrop.
"Valuation has completely reset," Chaiken remarked, highlighting that Norwegian Cruise has underperformed peer Royal Caribbean Cruise Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RCL#NYSE">RCL</a>) by 160% since January 2023. 
Mizuho Securities raised revenue forecasts from $9.35 billion to $9.41 billion for 2024, and from $9.97 billion to $10.13 billion for 2025, also boosting EBITDA forecasts.
"Together, we find the risk/reward particularly compelling at current levels, with upside/downside of approximately 6:1," Chaiken stated.
Shares of Norwegian Cruise Holdings rose 3.91% to $16.63 on Tuesday at publication.

Designed to provide broad exposure to the Large Cap Value segment of the US equity market, the ALPS (BATS: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ousa#BATS">OUSA</a>) is a passively managed exchange traded fund launched on 07/14/2015.
The fund is sponsored by Alps. It has amassed assets over $755.51 million, making it one of the average sized ETFs attempting to match the Large Cap Value segment of the US equity market.
Why Large Cap Value
Companies that fall in the large cap category tend to have a market capitalization above $10 billion. Overall, they are usually a stable option, with less risk and more sure-fire cash flows than mid and small cap companies.
While value stocks have lower than average price-to-earnings and price-to-book ratios, they also have lower than average sales and earnings growth rates. The ETF has a beta of 0.88 and standard deviation of 13.78% for the trailing three-year period, making it a medium risk choice in the space. With about 101 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk.
Alternatives
ALPS holds a Zacks ETF Rank of 2 (Buy), which is based on expected asset class return, expense ratio, and momentum, among other factors. Because of this, OUSA is an outstanding option for investors seeking exposure to the Style Box - Large Cap Value segment of the market. Bank of America&#8217;s technical analyst Stephen Suttmeier shed light on the diverging paths of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/best-growth-stocks">value and growth stocks</a>, underscored by the performance of the iShares Russell 1000 Growth ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWF#NYSE">IWF</a>) and the iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWD#NYSE">IWD</a>). 
Despite both reaching unprecedented heights, the future seems to favor one over the other, as Suttmeier <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/expert-ideas">highlighted in a note. </a>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Diverging Path: The Growth vs. Value Dichotomy</h3>
Over the past year, the gap between growth and value has widened, with growth outperforming value by 20 percentage points. 
This divergence has become even more pronounced over the last seven years, reaching a staggering near 100 percentage point difference.

The underperformance of value stocks compared to growth is notably attributed to the absence of the so-called Magnificent 7 stocks in its portfolio. This includes tech giants and industry leaders absent from the IWD&#8217;s top holdings.
The iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF features Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BKR#NYSE">BKR</a>), JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>), and ExxonMobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) as its top three holdings, with weights of 3.5%, 2.7%, and 2.1%, respectively. 
Conversely, the iShares Russell 1000 Growth ETF boasts Microsoft Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NYSE">MSFT</a>), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), and Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) as its top three holdings, with weights of 12.1%, 9.5%, and 8.2%, respectively.
Notably, the growth ETF is heavily concentrated in three sectors — technology, consumer discretionary, and communication services. These sectors account for over 70% of the ETF&#8217;s composition, with the top 10 holdings comprising more than 50% of the portfolio. 
Conversely, the value ETF demonstrates greater diversification across sectors and stocks, with financials, industrials, and healthcare collectively making up 50% of its portfolio. Moreover, the top 10 holdings represent only 17% of the value ETF&#8217;s portfolio.
Technical Analysis: Value vs. Growth
From a technical standpoint, Bank of America&#8217;s analysis indicates that IWF has breakout point supports near 312 and 287-285, with upward pattern counts from its 2022-2023 cup and handle pattern at 370 and 420. Following a bullish triangle completion in 2022-2023, IWF has surged to new all-time highs, suggesting further upside potential.

On the other hand, IWD shows breakout point supports at 171-169 and in the low 160s, with a bullish triangle target from 2022-2023 at 195 and an additional upside count at 208. 
While both ETFs demonstrate potential for further gains, the analyst emphasizes that Growth has maintained its market leadership, whereas Value remains in a long-term lagging trend compared to the S&amp;P 500 index.
Despite IWF&#8217;s relative strength stalling at its 2020 and 2021 highs versus the SPX, the leadership trend for Growth remains intact, particularly above its bullish and rising weekly relative Moving Averages (MAs). 
Conversely, the lagging trend for IWD versus the SPX persists below the declining 13-, 26-, and 40-week MAs, along with chart resistance at the January 2024 lower high and the prior 2021-2020 lows relative to the SPX.

Value, Growth Stocks Trade At Record Highs But Long-Term Leadership Lies With One: Analyst

A top Wall Street analyst has issued a cautionary note, warning of a potential sharp reversal in the stock market during the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/23/06/33001575/market-volatility-increases-s-p-500-snaps-5-week-winning-streak" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">second half of 2023</a>. 
According to Michael Wilson, Morgan Stanley&#8217;s chief U.S. equity strategist and chief investment officer, the market&#8217;s headwinds presently outweigh its tailwinds, indicating a significant likelihood of a severe correction. Wilson&#8217;s estimate implies that the S&amp;P 500 Index, tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) may see a 10% drop in the second half of the year, with a target level of 3,900. 
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Is Morgan Stanley Near-Term Bearish On The Stock Market?</h2>
&#8220;A 20% rally does not guarantee [the] bear market is over,&#8221; Wilson wrote in his latest presentation. 
The analyst drew on the historical parallel of the period immediately following World War II, between 1946 and 1949, when the S&amp;P 500 made a double bottom after rallying 24% from the first low.

This pessimistic outlook stems from Morgan Stanley&#8217;s lower-than-expected earnings forecast for the year, which anticipates pricing erosion and disappointing top-line performance. 
&#8220;The Equity risk premium is at very unattractive levels, particularly given our earnings outlook,&#8221; Wilson said. The expert highlighted that stocks are trading in a &#8220;high risk zone,&#8221; susceptible to a sharp rise in the equity risk premium.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Headwinds From Restrictive Monetary and Fiscal Policies</h2>
Furthermore, Morgan Stanley noted that the United States&#8217; economic policies are turning more restrictive, putting additional pressure on equities. 
The liquidity environment is rapidly deteriorating, owing to record levels of Treasury issuance and quantitative tightening. Morgan Stanley predicts that bank reserves will shrink by $500-800 billion over the next six months, potentially lowering equity valuations. Wilson noted that the money supply growth is at the lowest levels since the 1930s.

Fiscal support is expected to peak and reverse next month, potentially creating a headwind of 6 percentage points to nominal GDP over the next year.
The outlook is more optimistic for 2024, as Wilson expects another earnings boom following a &#8220;proper bust&#8221; in 2023. 
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Alternative Scenario? The Average Stock Will Fare Better, Value Will Stage A Comeback</h2>
Wilson also made recommendations for an alternative scenario. 
Should his earnings forecast be incorrect, he expects market breadth to improve, with the equal-weighted S&amp;P 500, as tracked by the Invesco S&amp;P 500 Equal Weight ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RSP#NYSE">RSP</a>), outperforming the market-cap weighted S&amp;P 500. 
The average stock is expected to fare relatively better both in a more optimistic and more pessimistic scenario, either by rising more or declining less. 
Furthermore, Morgan Stanley believes that value stocks, as tracked by the Ishares Russell 1000 Value ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWD#NYSE">IWD</a>), may outperform growth stocks, which are tracked by the Ishares Russell 1000 growth ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWF#NYSE">IWF</a>) as defensive sectors regain their previous year&#8217;s leadership.
