Rio Tinto (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rio#NYSE">RIO</a>) announced that it would invest in Pongamia seed farms in Australia to explore the possibility of using its seed oil as a feedstock for renewable diesel. RIO sees biofuels as an avenue to reduce the dependence on fossil diesel, which accounts for around 10% of its emissions footprint in Australia.
To achieve net-zero Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 2050, Rio Tinto has chosen electrification as the long-term solution for replacing the use of diesel in its fleet. While electrification is in progress, the company is looking at other quicker options to lower diesel-sourced emissions, such as biofuels.
Australia does not yet have a biofuel feedstock industry capable of meeting domestic demand. Rio Tinto expects that the pilot will play an important role in addressing this gap while supporting its journey to achieve decarbonization goals.
<h2>Rio Tinto Joins Forces With Midway for Pongamia Farm Trial</h2>
Pongamia is a fast-growing tree that is native to northern Australia. It produces large numbers of seeds, which are rich in oil and protein. The seeds can be processed into renewable diesel, which offers a significant reduction in carbon emissions compared with fossil fuel diesel.
After the extraction of oil, the seed pod and meal can be processed for other uses such as cattle feed. Pongamia has other benefits, it is drought tolerant, salinity and flood resistant, with low water, fertilization and pest control requirements making it easy to grow.
Rio Tinto is in the final stages of acquiring approximately 3,000 hectares of cleared land near Townsville in north Queensland to establish farms to study growth conditions and measure seed oil yields.
RIO has partnered with Midway Limited to oversee the planting and management of the seed farms. The companies will plant approximately 750,000 Pongamia saplings.
<h2>Rio Tinto&#39;s Decarbonization Efforts</h2>
In 2023, Rio Tinto&#39;s Scope 1 and 2 emissions were 32.6Mt CO2e, which marked a reduction of 5.5% from its 2018 baseline. It plans to invest capital in the range of $5- $6 billion by 2030 to deliver on its decarbonization strategy.
In July, RIO announced that it is set to install carbon-free aluminum smelting cells at its Arvida smelter in Qu&eacute;bec, Canada, utilizing the first technology license issued by the ELYSIS joint venture. The groundbreaking ELYSIS technology aims to eliminate all direct greenhouse gases from the conventional aluminum smelting process by producing oxygen as a byproduct while improving efficiency by producing more aluminum at lower costs.
In May 2024, Rio Tinto and BHP Group (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bhp#NYSE">BHP</a>) teamed up to trial large battery-powered haul trucks manufactured by Caterpillar (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cat#NYSE">CAT</a>) and Komatsu (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/kmtuy#OTC">KMTUY</a>) in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The trials will kick off with two Cat 793 haul trucks in 2024, followed by two Komatsu 930 haul trucks in 2026.
BHP will trial the Caterpillar trucks while Rio Tinto will test the Komatsu trucks. This collaboration between two leading global miners with two of the world&#39;s largest haul truck manufacturers seeks to address the critical challenge of achieving zero-emissions haulage in the mining sector.
Even though electrification is the most efficient and cost-effective solution to reduce the use of fossil diesel in mining fleet and equipment, Rio Tinto does not expect mass deployment of battery electric haul trucks at its operations to be technically or commercially feasible before 2030.
In the meantime, Rio Tinto intends to explore other avenues like biofuels to reduce diesel-sourced emissions. In June 2023, its Boron operation in California fully transitioned its heavy machinery from fossil diesel to renewable diesel. It is the first open pit mine in the world to achieve this feat.&nbsp; The company expects to replicate this at its Kennecott copper operation in Utah this year. It is also investigating the usage of biofuels in scenarios where electrification may be challenging to implement.

As per the deal, BP and Rio plan to work with manufacturers Caterpillar and Komatsu to conduct independent trials of their battery-electric haul trucks in the Pilbara environment.&nbsp;These trials are the first&nbsp;stage of&nbsp;battery-electric haul truck testing at BHP&#8217;s and Rio Tinto&#8217;s Pilbara operations.
BHP President Australia Geraldine Slattery said, &#8220;Replacing diesel as a fuel source requires us to develop a whole new operational ecosystem to surround the fleet. We need to address&nbsp;the way&nbsp;we plan our mines, operate our haulage networks, and consider the additional safety and operational considerations that these changes will bring.&nbsp;This&nbsp;is why trials are&nbsp;so&nbsp;critical to our success as we test and learn how these new technologies could work and integrate into our mines.&#8221;
In particular, Caterpillar and Komatsu will each provide one truck to&nbsp;BHP and Rio Tinto for these trials.&nbsp;The deal includes trialing two CAT 793 haul trucks in the second half of 2024 and testing two Komatsu 930 haul trucks in 2026 at mine sites in Western Australia&#8217;s Pilbara region.

Mining Rivals Join Forces: Rio Tinto & BHP Partner On Electric Truck Trials

Laser Photonics Corporation&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LASE#NASDAQ">LASE</a>) shares are trading&nbsp;higher Thursday after announcing a distribution agreement with Incredible Supply &amp; Logistics (ISL) for its military<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/03/b37866016/laser-photonics-corporation-enters-distribution-agreement-with-incredible-supply-logistics-for-its" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;and industrial laser solutions</a>.

ARK Invest, the New York-based investment management firm led by the popular money manager Cathie Wood, saw its five actively managed exchange-traded funds and two self-indexed ETFs underperform the S&amp;P 500 index in the second quarter.
That said, Ark&rsquo;s flagship fund ARK Innovation ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/arkk#NYSE">ARKK</a>), which counts electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tsla#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) among its top holdings, outperformed the broad-based global indexes. ARKK returned 9.4% in the quarter compared to the S&amp;P 500 Index&#39;s return of 8.5%.
For perspective, barring Roku Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/roku#NASDAQ">ROKU</a>), which has risen 13% during the second quarter, all the other top four Ark ETF holdings have declined during the period.&nbsp;

Shares of Tesla, the largest holding for Ark, fell 7.44% in the second quarter, while Square Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/sq#NYSE">SQ</a>), Teladoc Health Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tdoc#NYSE">TDOC</a>) and Spotify Technology SA (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/spot#NYSE">SPOT</a>) fell 2%, 17%, and 9.8%, respectively.&nbsp;

3D Systems Corporation (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ddd#NYSE">DDD</a>) and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/goog#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) were among the best performing holdings for ARKQ.&nbsp;
ARKQ returned 2.7% in the second quarter.
Ark Next Generation Internet ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/arkw#NYSE">ARKW</a>): ARKW underperformed the broad-based market indexes during the quarter with a return of 4.5%.&nbsp;Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTC">GBTC</a>) and Coinbase Global Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/coin#NASDAQ">COIN</a>) were among the top detractors as both suffered from the drop in Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and other cryptocurrencies.
Roku and Trade Desk Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ttd#NASDAQ">TTD</a>) were among the top-performing holdings.
ARKW returned 4.5% in the second quarter.
Ark Genomic Revolution ETF (BATS: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/arkg#BATS">ARKG</a>): Yet another ETF that underperformed the broad-based market indexes during the quarter. Both Teladoc and Iovance Biotherapeutics Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/iova#NASDAQ">IOVA</a>) were among the top losers.
TDOC depreciated amid competitive incursions into the digital health space including that of Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/amzn#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>). Iovance disclosed that Maria Fardis, CEO for the last five years, would be leaving to pursue other opportunities.&nbsp;
ARKG surged 4.25% in the second quarter.
Ark Fintech Innovation ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/arkf#NYSE">ARKF</a>): ARKF too underperformed the broad-based market indexes during the quarter led by Silvergate Capital Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/si#NYSE">SI</a>) and Coinbase. Cathie Wood's Ark ETFs Underperformed The Broader Market In Q2, With Workhorse, Virgin Galactic, Coinbase, Teladoc Taking Big Toll

Cathie Wood-led Ark Investment Management on Tuesday snapped up 2.8 million shares, worth about $56.7 million, in Palantir Technologies Inc (NYSE: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/pltr#NYSE">PLTR</a>) after the data analytics company reported strong earnings on Tuesday.
Shares of Palantir, which reported earnings before the market opened, were down to about $16.50 in premarket trading on Tuesday before staging a reversal that saw the stock close up 9.42% at $20.21. The shares were further up 2.3% in extended hours.

The trades were made through Ark Innovation ETF (NYSE: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/arkk#NYSE">ARKK</a>) and the&nbsp;ARK Next Generation Internet ETF (NYSE: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/arkw#NYSE">ARKW</a>), which together held PLTR shares, worth about $414 million, ahead of Tuesday&rsquo;s trade.
No other Ark ETF has a position in Palantir.&nbsp;
The New York-based investment firm had on Monday also snapped up 1.36 million shares in Palantir.

Palantir reported first-quarter earnings of 4 cents per share on Tuesday, which was in line with the consensus estimate. Revenue grew 49% year-over-year to $341 million, which beat the estimate of $332.23 million. Palantir also reaffirmed its guidance for annual revenue growth of 30% or greater through 2025.&nbsp;
On the conference call, the company said it would begin accepting Bitcoin as payment from customers. Further, Palantir said it&#39;s considering investing in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.
