The &#8220;Trump-related everything rally&#8221; reignited across markets on Monday, with heightened focus on last week's top performers like small caps, financials, Tesla Inc. The Russell 2000 Index outperformed major large-cap indices, nearing a retest of its all-time high from November 2021.

Within tech, Tesla continued its rally, while the rest of the sector lagged, weighed down by sharp declines in semiconductors following new AI-related export restrictions to China, impacting Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>).
Elsewhere, the U.S. dollar extended its gains, while Treasury yields held steady, with the 10-year yield hovering around 4.3%.
Prices tumbled in commodities, with the exception of natural gas, which rose roughly 10%. Gold dropped over 2%, and oil fell by 3%.

Seiberg also pointed out that banks might benefit from lower capital requirements, stable credit card fee policies and friendlier crypto regulations. However, he cautioned that Trump's stance on tariffs and immigration could create inflationary pressures.

Clean energy stocks were among the day's worst performers, with the Invesco Solar ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TAN#NYSE">TAN</a>) plunging 11% for its steepest drop since March 2020, as investors braced for potential rollbacks on green initiatives under the Trump administration.
In the foreign exchange market, the U.S. dollar initially rallied nearly 2% before paring gains to 1.4% as traders awaited a Federal Reserve interest rate cut on Thursday.
Treasury yields spiked as expectations rose for larger budget deficits under Republican fiscal policies and higher inflation due to potential tariffs. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed 14 basis points to 4.41%, reaching a four-month high.
Gold prices fell 2.8%, silver dropped over 4%, while natural gas rose 3.8%. Oil prices remained steady.

The U.S. regional <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/banks">banking sector is showing resilience</a> as several mid- and small-cap banks delivered stronger-than-expected third-quarter earnings, according to JPMorgan analyst Anthony Elian.
In a note on the sector's third-quarter earnings season, Elian highlighted widespread earnings beats and favorable outlooks, suggesting that regional bank stocks have room for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/regional-banks">further upside into 2025. </a>
In addition to strong earnings reports, the Fed&#8217;s expected gradual rate cuts, the yield curve de-inverting, easing credit quality concerns, potential capital returns, and underweight positioning by investors all lead Elian to say he is &#8220;encouraged about the direction of regional banks.&#8221;
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Earnings Beats Drive Outperformance</h3>
One week into the earnings season, seven regional banks in JPMorgan's coverage universe have reported results, with five of them beating core earnings-per-share (EPS) estimates. The primary driver behind these beats was stronger-than-expected net interest margins (NIM) and net interest income (NII).
As a result, regional bank stocks, represented by the SPDR Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>), have outperformed the broader market, as gauged by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), so far this month.
&#8220;With more beats than misses and 4Q24 outlooks generally trending better than prior consensus expectations, regional banks are outperforming through earnings season so far,&#8221; Elian noted.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Banking Sector&#8217;s Third-Quarter Trends</h3>
Several fundamental trends emerged for U.S. banks during the quarter. 
Average deposits increased at a 7% annualized rate, while average loans grew by 2% annually. On a period-end basis, deposits rose at an even stronger 11% annualized pace, and loans increased by 3% annually. Importantly, NII expanded at a robust 12% annualized rate. 
Despite some concerns over office loans, credit quality remained stable overall, though a few banks reported increases in non-performing assets (NPAs) related to office loans.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bullish Outlook For Fourth Quarter And Beyond</h3>
Looking ahead, the outlook for the fourth quarter remains largely positive. 
Many banks are guiding for modest growth across key metrics such as loan growth, NII, and fee income, while expense growth is expected to remain controlled. 
Despite near-term headwinds, most banks in Elian's coverage universe expressed optimism about the NII trajectory into 2025, particularly as the Federal Reserve is expected to reduce interest rates further.
With &#8220;the Fed continuing to reduce the funds rate, this outlook should be further supported by an eventual rebound in commercial loan demand across the industry,&#8221; Elian said.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Regional Banks&#8217; Valuation And Investment Outlook</h3>
Regional banks are still trading below historical valuations. JPMorgan&#8217;s coverage universe is currently priced at 1.3x 2025 estimated tangible book value (TBV), compared to the historical range of 1.8x to 2.0x.
This indicates substantial upside potential for a re-rating of the sector, particularly as investors remain underweight regional bank stocks. &#8220;Expect the sector to re-rate higher as investors recognize their improved financial health and earnings potential,&#8221; Elian noted.

3 Regional Bank Stock Picks From JPMorgan: Analyst 'Encouraged' After Solid Q3

U.S. banks are preparing to slash interest payments on corporate deposits as the Federal Reserve&#8217;s recent <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">rate cuts take effect. </a>
Following the Fed's decision in September to lower its benchmark rate by 50 basis points, the first reduction in over four years, U.S. financial institutions are focusing on corporate deposits as a key area to maintain profit margins amid declining interest levels, according to a report from the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/1056329a-9500-468f-89b7-1834ba6e6090">Financial Times</a>.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Corporate Deposit Rates Come Under Pressure</h3>
In the wake of the Federal Reserve&#8217;s rapid rate hikes through 2022 and early 2023, banks increased interest payments on deposits to retain customers.
As benchmark interest rates soared to 23-year highs, corporate depositors, in particular, saw rates on their accounts rise sharply with Fed policy, the FT reported. These accounts became a significant tool for banks to attract and retain capital, preventing businesses from shifting funds into higher-yielding alternatives like money market funds.
With the recent rate cuts and more expected in the coming months, U.S. banks are now focusing on reducing the costs associated with these corporate deposits.
Several industry executives have echoed this sentiment. Bruce Van Saun, CEO of Citizens Financial Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CFG#NYSE">CFG</a>), told the FT that banks are actively pricing down deposits in corporate accounts since &#8220;they were demanding every penny on the way up.&#8221;
This trend is likely to continue, with projections indicating that the Fed&#8217;s rates could fall from 5% to around 3% by 2026.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Banks Leverage Flexibility Amid Weak Loan Demand</h3>
The environment of lower interest rates has also coincided with a downturn in loan demand. 
While this has pressured banks&#8217; net interest income, it has provided more flexibility when it comes to adjusting deposit rates. 
Jason Goldberg, a research analyst at Barclays, told the FT: "it's still very early in the cycle, but you certainly have started to see banks take action a little bit prior to this Fed cut in mid-September."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Small, Midsized Banks Eye Margin Protections</h3>
Mid-sized and smaller U.S. banks have been under significant pressure to raise the interest rates they offer on savings accounts in order to prevent customers from moving their money elsewhere. 
This competition has been especially tough for regional banks, while larger institutions like JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>) and Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAC#NYSE">BAC</a>) have had an advantage. Nearly one-third of JPMorgan deposits earn no interest, the FT report said. 
Citizens Financial, which holds approximately $175 billion in deposits, is among the regional players employing sophisticated models to balance customer retention with deposit rate cuts. 
Van Saun reportedly said the bank takes a &#8220;very, very scientific&#8221; approach to pricing deposits, ensuring that rates are high enough to keep corporate clients satisfied but not so high as to erode profitability.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Implications For Bank Stocks </h3>
Shares of major U.S. financial institutions, tracked by the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>), are trading at record highs following a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/10/41331839/financial-sector-hits-record-highs-as-goldman-sachs-bank-of-america-citi-beat-q3-ea">robust third-quarter earnings season. </a>

With heightened competition in the sector, these banks are in a more precarious position — overly aggressive cuts could prompt corporate depositors to move their funds elsewhere. As a result, these institutions may face pressure on their profit margins to keep depositors satisfied.
A silver lining could exist: for regional banks: lower interest rates might stimulate loan demand, which could help offset the pressure on deposit funding costs by increasing lending volumes.

&#8220;Small caps have been stuck in a consolidation range over the last few months as investors questioned the likelihood of a soft-landing scenario and the path of monetary policy. Small caps tend to be more sensitive to economic conditions and interest rates versus their larger cap peers,&#8221; commented Adam Turnquist, chief technical strategist at LPL Financial. 
The outlook for small caps has brightened amid strong economic data and optimism surrounding Federal Reserve policy. 
The U.S. economy continues to show resilience, with the Atlanta Fed GDPNow model forecasting 3.2% GDP growth for the fourth quarter of 2024, marking an acceleration from 3% growth in the third quarter. 
Additionally, the U.S. labor market has recently outperformed even the rosiest expectations, with 254,000 jobs added in September, marking the strongest monthly job growth in six months. This was a substantial increase from the 159,000 jobs added in August, far surpassing forecasts of 140,000. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1%, while wage growth also accelerated.
Turnquist highlighted, &#8220;With the growth outlook recently improving — underpinned by better-than-feared labor market conditions — and increased visibility into Fed rate cuts, the Russell 2000 has rallied off the lower end of its rising price channel.

(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SCHW#NYSE">SCHW</a>) — all reported better-than-expected thrid-quarter earnings, sparking investor optimism in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/10/41331839/financial-sector-hits-record-highs-as-goldman-sachs-bank-of-america-citi-beat-q3-ea">the broader financial sector.</a>
The bullish momentum on large banks has had a ripple effect on regional banks, which make up the largest sector of the Russell 2000. 
The SPDR S&amp;P Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>) extended its rally to six consecutive days, fully rebounding from the banking crisis triggered in March 2023 by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank.

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Russell 2000: Technical Outlook</h1>
&#8220;Technically, a close above 2,275 would confirm a breakout from its current symmetrical triangle and leave the 2021 highs as the next resistance hurdle to clear. Momentum indicators have also recently turned bullish, adding to the evidence of a topside breakout,&#8221; Turnquist explained.
However, it&#8217;s important to note that despite recent improvements, the Russell 2000&#8217;s relative performance against the S&amp;P 500 — tracked by the IWM/SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) ratio — remains in a downtrend. 
The ratio is still below its declining 200-day moving average, signaling that small caps have yet to fully outperform their large-cap counterparts. 
&#8220;A close above the July highs would validate a trend reversal in favor of small caps outperforming,&#8221; Turnquist added.

Russell 2000 Poised For Major Technical Breakout: Analyst Eyes 'A Trend Reversal In Favor Of Small Caps Outperforming' S&P 500

Small-cap stocks outperformed large caps in Wednesday's session, with the Russell 2000 Index surging to test July 2024 highs on the back of expectations for interest rate cuts and a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/regional-banks">strong rally in regional banks. </a>
Financial stocks continued their upward momentum, buoyed by strong earnings reports. Morgan Stanley (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MS#NYSE">MS</a>) significantly beat expectations, propelling its stock up by 8% to new all-time highs.
Regional banks, as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>), rallied 2.1%, hitting levels last seen in early March 2023, prior to the fallout of Silicon Valley Bank.
Airlines also soared, with United Airlines Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UAL#NASDAQ">UAL</a>) posting an 11% rally. The surge lifted the entire industry, as tracked by the U.S. Global Jets ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JETS#NYSE">JETS</a>), which reached its highest level since July 2023.
The tech sector lagged, weighed down by weak performance in semiconductors. The industry was still reeling from ASML Holding N.V. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASML#NASDAQ">ASML</a>)&#8217;s earnings shock on Tuesday, after the company slashed its 2025 revenue outlook, triggering a broad selloff in chipmakers.
Both the Nasdaq 100 and semiconductor stocks remained flat on Wednesday.
In the currency market, the U.S. Dollar Index was poised to log its 12th positive day in the last 13 sessions. Treasury yields edged lower. Oil prices saw a slight decline of 0.6%, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude falling below $70 per barrel.
Precious metals offered positive signals, with gold set to close its fifth consecutive day of gains, while silver rose 0.8%.
In the cryptocurrency space, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) advanced 1%, reaching $68,000 — its highest level since late July 2024.

Tech Stocks Stall, Small Caps Surge As Regional Banks Rally, Airlines Rocket: What's Driving Markets Wednesday?

A wave of market-relevant news fueled an active trading session on Wall Street Tuesday, with large-cap indices falling due to sharp declines in tech and energy stocks, while small-caps outperformed, led by gains in regional banks.
At the forefront of the headlines is the massive plunge in ASML Holding NV (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASML#NASDAQ">ASML</a>) shares. The Dutch chipmaker&#8217;s stock nosedived over 16% after a technical error prematurely revealed its third-quarter earnings, originally scheduled for Wednesday, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/10/41339229/asml-earnings-leak-sparks-broad-semiconductor-sell-off-sector-down-sharply-as-dutch-chipmaker-lo">on the company&#8217;s website. </a>
The report disclosed weaker-than-expected guidance for 2025, leading to the worst single-day drop in ASML stock since it went public in 2002.
ASML&#8217;s collapse sent shockwaves across the semiconductor sector, with the iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) falling more than 4%, marking its worst performance since early September. Key semiconductor players were hit hard, with NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) down 5% and Arm Holdings PLC-ADR (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARM#NASDAQ">ARM</a>) tumbling 7%.
Another underperforming sector was energy. Oil prices plunged 5%, setting up their <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/10/41336413/oil-prices-take-largest-plunge-in-over-a-year-as-israel-vows-to-spare-iranian-facilities-energy-stoc">worst trading day in over a year. </a>
The sell-off followed a Monday&#8217;s report from The Washington Post, which revealed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured the Biden administration Israel would refrain from targeting Iranian oil and nuclear facilities in any retaliatory military actions.
Meanwhile, the financial sector surged, extending its all-time highs as Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAC#NYSE">BAC</a>), Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>), and Charles Schwab Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SCHW#NYSE">SCHW</a>) all posted <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/10/41331839/financial-sector-hits-record-highs-as-goldman-sachs-bank-of-america-citi-beat-q3-ea">stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings.</a>
Gains also spread to more economically sensitive regional banks, with the SPDR S&amp;P Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>) jumping over 3%, lifting the broader Russell 2000 index by 1%.
In other markets, both the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields remained steady, as there were no major updates on interest-rate expectations. Gold edged up by 0.6%, while Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) continued its recent momentum, climbing 1.3% after a 5.1% surge on Monday.

(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WFC#NYSE">WFC</a>), Bank of New York Mellon Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BK#NYSE">BK</a>), and BlackRock Inc. On the macroeconomic front, inflation remains in focus. The financial sector was the primary driver of Friday's market gains. 
The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) rallied 1.9%, marking its strongest session since November 2023 and hitting a fresh record high. 
The rally came as a wave of U.S. banks reported better-than-expected third-quarter earnings, reinforcing confidence in the sector&#8217;s resilience.
JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>) delivered a robust performance, with Q3 earnings per share (EPS) of $4.37, exceeding the $4.00 consensus. 
Shares surged over 4% by mid-morning trading in New York. Goldman Sachs analyst Richard Ramsden highlighted a &#8220;robust beat across every line,&#8221; for the largest U.S. bank.
Wells Fargo &amp; Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WFC#NYSE">WFC</a>) saw its shares soar 6.2% after posting an EPS of $1.42, beating expectations despite cautious guidance on net interest income for the year.
Bank of New York Mellon Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BK#NYSE">BK</a>) also delivered stronger-than-expected results, with BK shares rising 1.8%. 
BlackRock Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLK#NYSE">BLK</a>) gained 3.4% after upbeat earnings and revenue, as performance fees sharply surprised estimates. BlackRock shares hit a new record high. 
Other major banks participated in the rally, with Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAC#NYSE">BAC</a>), Citigroup (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/C#NYSE">C</a>), Goldman Sachs Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>), and Morgan Stanley (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MS#NYSE">MS</a>) climbing between 2% and 4.8%. Morgan Stanley also set new all-time highs. 
The strength in large-cap banks spilled over to regional players, with the SPDR S&amp;P Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>) rallying 3.5%. This helped lift the Russell 2000 index, which gained 1.3% and outperformed large-cap counterparts. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Mixed Economic Data Overshadowed by Strong Earnings</h3>
Friday's economic data included a higher-than-expected Producer Price Index (PPI) and a weaker-than-expected Michigan Consumer Sentiment report for October. 
The headline PPI came in at 1.8% year-over-year in September, down from an upwardly revised 1.9% in August, but above expectations of 1.6%. Core producer prices – which exclude energy and food – sharply increased from 2.6% to 2.8% year-on-year, surpassing expectations of 2.7%. 
According to preliminary estimates, the University of Michigan&#8217;s U.S. consumer sentiment index fell to 68.9 in October 2024, down from a five-month high of 70.1 in September and missing forecasts of 70.8.
Year-ahead inflation expectations rose slightly from 2.7% to 2.9%, while the five-year outlook dipped from 3.1% to 3%.
&#8220;Consumers continue to express frustration over high prices. Still, long run business conditions lifted to its highest reading in six months, while current and expected personal finances both softened slightly&#8221;, Surveys of Consumers Director Joanne Hsu said. 
Despite the mixed economic signals, investors focused on the strong bank earnings and remained optimistic about the upcoming corporate earnings season.
