In a market whipsawed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/artificial-intelligence">by AI hype</a>, tariff fears and geopolitical headlines, today's traders are not committing &#8211; they're swiping right on volatility and moving fast. The most active market participants are increasingly using leveraged and inverse ETFs to play quick, high-conviction moves &#8211; not long-term narratives, Jake Behan, head of Capital Markets at Direxion, told Benzinga in an exclusive Q&amp;A email.
A case in point: Palantir Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>). After a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/05/45208000/palantir-q1-earnings-revenue-beat-eps-in-line-customer-count-up-39-company-raises-guidance-citing-surging-and-ferocious-growth">solid earnings report</a> in May, its stock plunged over 12% as investors questioned whether the company's AI-fueled growth spurt was sustainable. That didn't stop flows. Direxion saw activity in both its Direxion Daily PLTR Bull 2X Shares (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTU#NASDAQ">PLTU</a>) and the Direxion Daily PLTR Bear 1X Shares (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTD#NASDAQ">PLTD</a>), highlighting just how split sentiment has become around tech darlings.

"Valuations are under scrutiny and the durability of growth is being tested," says Behan. Traders are watching everything from Chinese demand to AI monetization to capital expenditure trends &#8211; but they're expressing those views tactically. Direxion's single-stock suite saw massive action around earnings and tariffs, with $3.6 billion in inflows in April alone, led by the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3x Shares (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXL#NYSE">SOXL</a>), its 3X bull semiconductor ETF.
Meanwhile, traditional hedges are falling out of favor. Instead, traders are deploying -1X ETFs as quick hedging tools, especially during headline-sensitive windows, notes Behan. This is visible in inverse funds like the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bear 3x Shares (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXS#NYSE">SOXS</a>), Direxion Daily AAPL Bear 1X Shares (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPD#NASDAQ">AAPD</a>) and Direxion Daily FTSE China Bear 3x Shares (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/YANG#NYSE">YANG</a>), which saw weekly inflows during tariff-related drawdowns and macro data surprises.
Looking ahead, Behan isn't expecting a calm summer. "We're likely to see more storms of volatility," he warns, pointing to the expiration of the current 90-day tariff reprieve and the next round of earnings. 
Episodic spikes &#8211; not a high VIX regime &#8211; could define the market mood.
The upside surprise? 
According to Behan, if labor and inflation data fall into line, the market could be forced to price in resilient growth, not just risk. For now, though, traders seem content dancing with volatility rather than betting on long-term happily-ever-afters.

The tariff reduction potentially serves as a direct cost relief that could protect Apple's margins heading into its next iPhone cycle.
Additionally, the suspension of non-tariff Chinese sanctions on U.S. firms improves Apple's operating environment in one of its largest markets. With China accounting for <a href="https://www.apple.com/newsroom/pdfs/fy2024-q4/FY24_Q4_Consolidated_Financial_Statements.pdf">roughly 18%</a> of Apple's revenue, the deal could alleviate fears of further regulatory retaliation.

AbCellera's ‘408 Patent is directed to microfluidic devices and using such devices to culture and selectively recover cells.
Previously Berkeley Lights Inc., now Bruker Cellular Analysis, Inc. (Bruker), a subsidiary of Bruker Corporation, challenged the claims of the ‘408 Patent alleging invalidity based on anticipation and obviousness over the prior art. The U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) rejected all of Bruker's arguments and now the CAFC has confirmed that all claims of AbCellera's ‘408 Patent are valid. AbCellera's ‘408 Patent is part of a multi-patent infringement litigation between AbCellera and Bruker pending in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Billionaire&#8217;s Bold Promise</h2>
The 69-year-old philanthropist outlined his latest giving pledge in a <a href="https://www.gatesnotes.com/home/home-page-topic/reader/n20-years-to-give-away-virtually-all-my-wealth">blog post</a>, declaring that his Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation will <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/05/45286464/bill-gates-commits-99-of-his-remaining-fortune-to-gates-foundation-set-to-wind-down-in-20-years-somebody-should-give-more-money-than-i-did">wind down its operations by 2045</a>, aiming to donate another $200 billion in that time.&nbsp;

However, the response online has been mixed. Popular YouTuber Stephen Findeisen, better known as Coffeezilla, was among those expressing doubt, <a href="https://x.com/coffeebreak_YT/status/1920723618482327789">posting on X</a>, "I've been hearing this for 15 years and every year Bill has more." The post got a lot of similar responses, with some questioning if Gates&#8217; promise is about real giving or just maintaining influence.
"They're likely just putting it into a trust and then ‘giving it away' over the course of 50-100 years," one commenter, Sam Tayyari, <a href="https://x.com/samtayyari/status/1920724915323306365">suggested</a>, adding that many charities "spend a lot on ‘administrative costs' like private jetting to give a 10 min speech while staying in $10k/night resorts."
Others pointed out that even giving away 99% of his fortune would still leave Gates a billionaire, with one user <a href="https://x.com/im_deiting/status/1920724966871314829">noting</a>, "1% of $200 billion is $2 billion. That&#8217;s a lot of money too."
Critics also drew comparisons to other wealthy figures, like George Soros, who have faced similar skepticism about their charitable efforts. One commenter <a href="https://x.com/Mountain_Texan/status/1920724460199412109">argued</a>, "It's meaningless anyway. He's going to ‘give it away' in the same way Soros gave his money away. He's purchasing influence, not giving money away."

In a recent BBC <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx2e87lzqkdo">interview</a>, he said, "It's really about the urgency. We can spend a lot more if we're not trying to be perpetual, and I know that the spending will be in line with my values."
According to Gates, the foundation has already distributed $100 billion for health and development projects and plans to spend another $200 billion in the coming decades, depending on markets and inflation. However, critics argue that the true impact of these donations can be difficult to measure, given the scale of his wealth and the complex structures often used in philanthropy.
Despite the skepticism, Gates remains committed to his vision, saying in his blog post, "People will say a lot of things about me when I die, but I am determined that ‘he died rich' will not be one of them."

The move lifted investor sentiment across sectors and boosted shares of companies heavily reliant on global supply chains.
What To Know: Amazon stands to benefit directly from the tariff reprieve. As one of the world's largest e-commerce and cloud services companies, Amazon is deeply integrated with global manufacturing, particularly in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45348699/us-listed-chinese-stocks-rally-as-countries-agree-to-ease-import-tariffs">China</a>.

Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/PARA/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">remained Not Rated</a> on Paramount Global (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PARA#NASDAQ">PARA</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PARAA#NASDAQ">PARAA</a>) on Friday.
Revenue of $7.19 billion beat Ng and consensus estimate of $7.04 billion and $7.1 billion.
Adjusted OIBDA of $688 million beat $652 million and $666 million Ng and consensus estimate driven by a broad-based beat across DTC, TV Media, and Film.

TV Media advertising was flat on an underlying basis on Super Bowl comps, helped by strong sports programming like March Madness and the NFL Playoffs.
Like Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WBD#NASDAQ">WBD</a>), advertising outperformed, and there has been limited discernible impact from macro uncertainty, Ng noted.
DTC advertising declined 1% on an underlying basis on Super Bowl comps, which should continue throughout 2025, driven by growing industry AVOD supply (e.g., Amazon.Com Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/amzn#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>)) as per the analyst.
The analyst remarked that Paramount expects the proposed Skydance acquisition to close in the first half of 2025. Free cash flow of $123 million beat the analyst&#8217;s estimate of $69 million and $13 million.
DTC revenue of $2.04 billion missed the consensus estimates of $2.1 billion and $2.09 billion, with OIBDA of $(109) million above the analyst and the consensus estimates of $(128) million and $(153) million. Paramount+ subscribers increased to 79.0 million (versus Ng&#8217;s estimate of 78.6 million), and global Paramount+ revenue grew 16% (versus Ng&#8217;s estimate of +12%).
TV Media revenue of $4.54 billion beat Ng and consensus estimate of $4.39 billion and $4.43 billion, with OIBDA of $922 million beating Ng estimate of $904 million but missing consensus of $951 million.
Filmed Entertainment revenue of $627 million was above Ng and consensus estimate of $575 million and $610 million, with OIBDA of $20 million beating Ng and consensus estimate of $13 million and $17 million.
Paramount introduced second-quarter guidance including subscriber decline at Paramount+ due to content seasonality and termination of an international bundle, Paramount+ ARPU growth to accelerate off first-quarter 2025, TV Media affiliate revenue decline rates to see similar underlying trends versus first-quarter 2025, TV Media advertising to see similar underlying trends versus first-quarter 2025 in digital while deceleration in linear, OIBDA loss in Studios driven by costs associated with the release of Mission Impossible &#8211; The Final Reckoning and free cash flow to Mirror last year.
Paramount reiterated 2025 guidance, including OIBDA, which will modestly decline, including impacts from the Super Bowl, free cash flow, which will increase, including 2024 Super Bowl and political advertising impacts, and domestic profitability for Paramount+.
The analyst projects fiscal 2025 revenue of $28.7 billion and adjusted EPS of $0.81.
