President Donald Trump had promised a manufacturing renaissance, but after a hopeful start to his new term, sentiment in the sector is now sliding fast, with data showing another contraction in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">factory activity in May.</a>



The Institute for Supply Management's Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index edged down to 48.5% in May from 48.7% in April, signaling the fastest pace of contraction since late 2024.



The outcome surprised economists, who expected a reading of 49.5%. It underscores persistent weakness in industrial production just months after a brief February rebound.



&#8220;In May, U.S. manufacturing activity slipped further into contraction after expanding only marginally in February,&#8221; said Susan Spence, chair of the ISM Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. 



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stubborn Inflation On The Input Side As Tariffs Bite</h3>



Even as output softens, cost pressures are refusing to ease. The Prices Index remained in increasing territory at 69.4%, just slightly below April's 69.8%, and still at levels not seen in three years. That reflects ongoing supply chain bottlenecks, port delays, and the lingering effects of tariffs.



Inventories have also swung into contraction, while supplier deliveries remain sluggish. The Imports Index plunged by 7.2 points, showing a sharp decline in inbound goods, and hinting at weakened demand or procurement challenges linked to evolving trade policies.



New orders continued to shrink for the fourth month in a row, registering 47.6%, though slightly better than April's 47.2%. Meanwhile, the Backlog of Orders Index showed some recovery from 43.7% to 47.1%, though it remains in contraction territory.



Despite a slight increase in the Employment Index from 46.5% to 46.8%, manufacturing jobs are still shrinking. Companies are cutting headcounts, often favoring layoffs over attrition for quicker cost reduction.



In the words of a transportation equipment executive, "There is continued softening of demand in the commercial vehicle market, primarily related to higher prices and economic uncertainty." 



The respondent added &#8220;the impact of ever-changing trade policies of the current administration has wreaked havoc on suppliers' ability to react and remain profitable.&#8221;



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions: Dollar Drops, Bond Yields Rise</h3>



The U.S. dollar index, tracked by Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), fell to 98.7 levels during Monday&#8217;s morning trading in New York, its lowest since April 23, as traders weigh weaker economic momentum.



Meanwhile, long-duration bonds sold off, with yields on the 30-year Treasury note climbing 5 basis points to 4.97%. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) dropped 1.2%, as concerns over U.S. debt trajectory persist. 



Equity markets also started the week on a downbeat tone. The S&amp;P 500 index slid 0.5%, reflecting concerns that persistent cost inflation could squeeze corporate margins further.

Trump's Manufacturing Narrative Weakens As May Data Shows Sharper Contraction, Stubborn Inflation

The Magnificent Seven etched a historic chapter in market history in May 2025, delivering blockbuster gains and an eye-popping $1.75 trillion surge in combined market capitalization, their strongest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/magnificent-seven">monthly performance in years.</a>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Who Gained The Most?</h3>



Nvidia led the pack with a 24.2% gain, marking its strongest month since May 2024. The chipmaker, a key player in the AI race, added a staggering $639 billion in market cap. 



Tesla jumped 21.5%, growing its value by $207 billion, while Meta Platforms rallied 19.4%, adding $242 billion. Microsoft gained 16.8%, contributing another $484 billion to the total surge.



Amazon added $219 billion, climbing 10.7%, and Alphabet rose 5.3%, adding $152 billion.

Apple was the lone laggard, falling 6% in May and wiping out $192 billion in market cap. This underperformance, compared to the S&amp;P 500's 6% gain, marks Apple's worst relative showing since 2018.



Historical patterns, however, suggest the dip might be a buying opportunity. As detailed in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/education/25/05/45675595/apple-eyes-worst-month-vs-sp-500-since-2018-but-history-says-buy-the-dip-now">a recent Benzinga analysis</a>, Apple has often rebounded strongly after periods of relative weakness.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why Analysts See More Upside</h3>



Goldman Sachs analyst Ryan Hammond said he&#8217;s watching for the Magnificent Seven to outperform the broader market this summer, citing earnings strength and their defensive appeal.



"Supercap Tech will act as a ‘defensive growth proxy,' and this is exactly what investors want during what will remain highly uncertain times," Hammond said in a Monday note.



He added that the group posted its best quarterly positive earnings-per-share surprise since the third quarter of 2023.



David Mazza, CEO of Roundhill Investments — which manages the Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF — echoed the bullish sentiment, emphasizing that these companies are not speculative growth plays.



"These companies aren't speculative bets on future adoption," Mazza said. "They are the infrastructure of the real economy and, in some cases, staples within global consumers' lives."



Mazza believes exposure to themes like enterprise demand, AI, cloud computing and automation will prove more resilient than traditional sectors such as consumer staples or utilities.



"MAGS offers diversified exposure to this rare blend of growth, quality, and macro relevance," he said. "In a world where clarity is scarce, the Magnificent Seven remain, ironically, the most grounded in real earnings and economic activity."



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Yet Valuations Are Stretching Again</h3>



Ed Yardeni, president of Yardeni Research, said in an emailed comment last week that the S&amp;P 500's forward price-to-earnings ratio rose from 18.0 in early April to 21.5 by the end of May.



He added that most of this jump came from the Magnificent Seven, whose group valuation climbed from 21.9 to 27.4 — showing strong investor demand for top tech stocks but also raising concerns that they may be getting too expensive.

Magnificent Seven Closed A Blockbuster May, Added Nearly $2 Trillion In Market Value

GE Aerospace Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GE#NYSE">GE</a>) is passing along higher prices to customers after U.S. trade tariffs created a $500 million cost burden, meaning airlines, and eventually passengers, will soon <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">feel the heat.</a>



Speaking from New Delhi at the International Air Transport Association's annual meeting, chief executive officer Larry Culp told Bloomberg that the world's largest aircraft engine maker is no longer able to shield customers from the financial impact of trade restrictions introduced under President Donald Trump's policies.



"We will be taking cost actions and passing along some of that residual," Culp said.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Is GE Already Seeing The Tariff Impact?</h3>



"Very much so," Culp said when asked whether the tariffs are affecting business now. The company has seen rising expenses and is adjusting its pricing strategy to preserve margins.



"We're managing the best we can, mitigating where we can through those supply-chain improvements but also through the cost and price actions," he said.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariff-Free Trade Helped Build US Aerospace</h3>



For decades, the global aerospace industry benefited from the 1979 Civil Aviation Agreement, which allowed for duty-free trade among key nations. 



Culp said that the framework helped U.S. companies like GE and Boeing Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>) build a $75 billion annual trade surplus in aviation. But that advantage is eroding under new trade barriers.



"We've been advocating for a return to where we were on the heels of that 1979 civil aviation agreement," he said.



The U.S. has already signed a trade deal with the U.K., and more negotiations are underway. 



"I think June will be an important month," Culp added, as more agreements could shape the future cost landscape for aerospace exports.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Production Pressure Grows As Airbus And Boeing Ramp Up</h3>



GE is working to keep pace with increasing production from both Airbus SE and Boeing Co., who are planning record monthly output levels. 



"Be it with Airbus, be it with Boeing, they are effectively sold out through the rest of this decade," Culp said.



GE holds a $170 billion backlog and expects to build more engines in the second half of 2025 and in 2026 than in the first half of this year. 



Culp said parts received from key suppliers in April and May rose double-digits compared to the first quarter, a sign that the company's supply chain efforts are starting to pay off.



GE is also a major supplier to the U.S. Department of Defense, powering two-thirds of the U.S. combat aircraft and helicopters. Culp said the company remains focused on long-term military contracts and advanced engine development as defense spending increases.



When asked about growing concern over technology exports to China, Culp said GE has followed strict government procedures for years and is prepared for tighter controls if they come. 



"We welcome the scrutiny," he said.

Get Ready To Pay The Price Of Tariffs: GE Is Already Passing Costs To Customers

Canned soup products maker&nbsp;The Campbell's Company&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPB#NASDAQ">CPB</a>) shares are&nbsp;trading <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/06/b45717977/campbells-reports-third-quarter-fiscal-2025-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">higher in the premarket&nbsp;on Monday</a>.



The company reported&nbsp;third-quarter&nbsp;sales growth of 4%&nbsp;year over year (Y/Y) to&nbsp;$2.475 billion, beating the analyst&nbsp;consensus estimate of&nbsp;$2.43 billion.



The benefit from the Sovos Brands acquisition drove the increase. Organic net sales rose 1% Y/Y to $2.3 billion, led by favorable volume/mix (+2%).

Meals &amp; Beverages net sales in the quarter increased&nbsp;15% Y/Y,&nbsp;driven by the benefit of the acquisition. Snacks net sales in the quarter decreased 8% Y/Y in the quarter.



Adjusted gross margin contracted 110 basis points to 30.1%. This is mainly due to cost inflation and other supply chain costs, and the impact of the acquisition.



Adjusted EBIT of&nbsp;$362&nbsp;million&nbsp;increased by&nbsp;2%&nbsp;Y/Y in the quarter, aided by the contribution of the acquisition.



Adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$0.73 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beat the consensus estimate of&nbsp;$0.66.</a>



The company held&nbsp;$143 million&nbsp;in cash and equivalents as of April 27, 2025. Operating cash flow for nine&nbsp;months totaled&nbsp;$872&nbsp;million.



The company has paid&nbsp;$343&nbsp;million&nbsp;in cash dividends and repurchased around $60&nbsp;million&nbsp;in common stock year-to-date.



As of the end of the third quarter, Campbell had around $200 million remaining under its anti-dilutive share repurchase program. It also had about $301 million remaining under its September 2021 strategic share repurchase program.



The company delivered about $110 million of savings under the $250 million cost savings program announced in September 2024.



Campbell&#8217;s CEO Mick Beekhuizen said, &#8220;In Meals &amp; Beverages, we are seeing improved consumption across all consumer income groups.&#8221;



Beekhuizen adds that consumers are &#8220;cooking at home at the highest levels since early 2020&#8221; and that Campbell&#8217;s is &#8220;adjusting&#8221; its plans to ensure it stays competitive.



FY25&nbsp;Outlook: Campbell&nbsp;reiterated net sales growth of&nbsp;6%&nbsp;to&nbsp;8%&nbsp; and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">adjusted EBIT growth of&nbsp;3%&nbsp;to&nbsp;5%</a>.



The company reaffirmed adjusted EPS guidance of&nbsp;$2.95&nbsp;–&nbsp;$3.05 vs. the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/44140506" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus estimate of&nbsp;$2.98</a>.



Excluding the impact of tariffs, the company now expects adjusted EBIT and adjusted EPS to be at the low end of the guided range owing to the slower-than-anticipated recovery in the Snacks business.



Assuming current tariffs hold steady, the company estimates that the net incremental headwind on adjusted EPS could be up to $0.03 to $0.05 per share.



Also, Campbell stated that FY25 comprises 53 weeks, and the extra week is estimated to add about 2 points of growth to reported net sales and adjusted EBIT, plus roughly $0.05 to adjusted EPS.



Price Action: CPB shares are up 2.14% at $34.77 premarket at the last check on Monday.

<li>Credo Technology Group Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CRDO#NASDAQ">CRDO</a>) declined 1.03% as analysts expect it to report quarterly earnings of 28 cents per share on revenue of $160.16 million, after the closing bell.</li>



<li>Sanofi SA (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNY#NASDAQ">SNY</a>) advanced 0.32% after it announced plans to acquire Blueprint Medicines Corp. Asian markets closed lower on Friday except South Korea's Kospi index. Australia's ASX 200, China&#8217;s CSI 300, India's S&amp;P BSE Sensex, Japan's Nikkei 225, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng indices declined. European markets were lower in early trade.

US Stocks Likely To Open Lower After A Solid May: 'TACO' Trade And 'Run It Hot' Optimism 'Are Consensus At This Point,' Says Expert

The CNN Money Fear and Greed index showed some decline in the overall market sentiment, while the index remained in the &#8220;Greed&#8221; zone on Friday.



U.S. stocks settled mixed on Friday, with the Dow Jones index gaining more than 50 points during the session after President Donald Trump accused China of &#8220;totally&#8221; breaching a tariff agreement, raising new fears over trade disputes.



Wall Street closed on a positive note last month, with the S&amp;P 500 gaining more than 6.2% in May and the Nasdaq jumping 9.6%. Both indices recorded their strongest months since November 2023. The Dow surged 3.9% for the month.



For the week, the S&amp;P 500 climbed, while the 30-stock Dow climbed 1.6%. The tech-laden Nasdaq, meanwhile, surged 2% last week.



Shares of Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DELL#NYSE">DELL</a>) fell more than 2% on Friday after the company reported mixed financial results for the first quarter. Shares of Ulta Beauty Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ULTA#NASDAQ">ULTA</a>) jumped around 12% after the company reported better-than-expected first-quarter financial results and raised guidance.



On the economic data front, the University of Michigan consumer sentiment was revised higher to 52.2 in May versus a preliminary reading of 50.8. The Chicago PMI declined to 40.5 in May versus 44.6 in the previous month.



Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with energy, consumer discretionary and information technology stocks recording the biggest losses on Friday. However, consumer staples and utilities stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.



The Dow Jones closed higher by around 54 points to 42,270.07 on Friday. The S&amp;P 500 slipped 0.01% to 5,911.69, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.32% to 19,113.77 during Friday's session.

At a current reading of 61.5, the index remained in the &#8220;Greed&#8221; zone on Friday, versus a prior reading of 62.4.

Leading cryptocurrencies were in the green on Sunday, stock futures dipped amid concerns that trade hostilities between the U.S. and China would resume.

What Happened: Bitcoin traded in the $105,000 range for most of the day, while Ethereum remained in the $2,500 range. Trading volumes for both blue-chip currencies declined significantly in the last 24 hours.



The apex cryptocurrency ended May with returns of nearly 11%, higher than the average return of 8.18% for the month. ETH surged 40.84%, snapping a five-month-long losing streak.



About $147 million was liquidated from the cryptocurrency market in the last 24 hours, with nearly equal amounts of longs and shorts erased.



Bitcoin&#8217;s Open Interest rose 1.62% in the last 24 hours. Over 50% of Binance traders with open BTC positions were long as of this writing.



The &#8220;Greed&#8221; sentiment rose sharply from 56 to 65 in the last 24 hours, as indicated by the Crypto Fear and Greed Index, implying a resurgence in buying pressure.

This comes after President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/05/45703311/us-listed-chinese-stocks-drop-after-trump-renews-trade-tensions">accused China</a> of violating an agreement with the U.S. to ease tariffs.

FBI Investigating Boulder Attack As 'Targeted Terror' Incident

U.S. Stock futures fell on Sunday evening, starting the new month on a sobering note, amid fresh steel and aluminum tariff concerns over the weekend.

Dow Futures Slip Over 100 Points After Trump Announces Doubling Steel Tariffs, Nikkei Down

Jim Cramer, one of the most prominent hosts in financial television, recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of his CNBC show "Mad Money."

Cramer said when he started his show, it was not a "great time" for the economy, but investors who stayed in the market "did great." When asked where investors should put their money, Cramer said people should start with an S&amp;P fund.



"Never, ever lose faith in the country. Remember the country and the market — they&#8217;re very separate from what happens in Washington," he added.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cramer Says ‘Bad Stuff' Incoming</h2>



Cramer expects a lot of "bad stuff" in the weeks ahead due to inflation. However, he believes that it would not "last forever."



"It will be tough on the regular person because you&#8217;re not going to be making enough to cover what is basically a tax," Cramer said. "And I&#8217;m not saying Republican or Democrat. I&#8217;m just telling the truth."&nbsp;



Earlier this month, the Federal Reserve kept its benchmark lending rate unchanged, but warned that inflation could increase due to the impact of tariffs.&nbsp;



"If the large increases in tariffs that have been announced are sustained, they're likely to generate a rise in inflation, a slowdown in economic growth, and an increase in unemployment," Fed Chair Jerome Powell <a href="https://www.wsj.com/economy/central-banking/fed-keeps-rates-steady-as-tariff-uncertainty-roils-outlook-55ebe99f">said</a> at a news conference at the time.

Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said in a recent interview with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdE3Dg2hw6w">CNBC</a> that the economy and policies are in a lot of flux and pointed to inflation risks.



"I worry a lot about the inflation side, and mainly because we're seeing expectations move in a troublesome way," Bostic said.



Asked whether he believes we are headed for a recession, Cramer said "absolutely not," adding that the US is poised to see strong jobs growth.



"But we&#8217;ll be headed for prices that we&#8217;re not used to seeing," he said.

In an <a href="https://youtu.be/-N5ivvV2_Cc?si=rfI64j7wJVC4NikL">interview last year with DJ Vlad</a>, Cardone took aim at Nancy Pelosi's reported wealth, questioning how a public servant making $179,000 a year could be worth $120 million. "You can't do the math on it," he said flatly. "She would have to be 33,000 years old or something." After revising, he settled on a more "reasonable" estimate: "She would have to be on Earth 3,300 years," he said, in order to turn her salary into the fortune she's reported to have.

Cardone didn't stop there. Factoring in taxes and cost of living, he added, "She's probably paying 50% in taxes… So she's making $89,000 a year, bro. She's worth $120 million minimum. She would have to be 1,500 years old if she never spent one penny."



The math may have been delivered with a smirk, but the underlying message wasn't a joke: "If you make $179,000 a year, you will never be a millionaire — much less worth $120 million." He went on to call out both parties for profiting off insider knowledge, saying, "There's a whole bunch of them… Republicans and Democrats."



His proposed solution? Cut Congressional salaries to the median American wage and ban trading altogether: "If you're in Congress or Senate… you cannot insider trade. Period. In fact, you cannot trade at all."

At the time of the interview, Pelosi's net worth was estimated around $120 million — but today, it's significantly higher. As of early 2025, Pelosi's net worth is estimated to be between $246.8 million and $259 million, <a href="https://www.quiverquant.com/congresstrading/politician/Nancy%20Pelosi-P000197/net-worth">according to Quiver Quantitative</a>. That's more than double what Cardone was reacting to just a year ago.



Much of the wealth is tied to savvy and controversial investments in tech stocks and real estate, largely managed by her husband, Paul Pelosi. While there's no direct evidence of insider trading, public skepticism has remained high — and the numbers haven't exactly helped.
