The Ozempic Diet: Nestle Launches $5 Pizza For Weight Loss Drug Users

Global Analyst Adrian Day looks at quarterly results from a couple of gold majors, as well as mostly positive developments at some others.
Franco-Nevada Corp. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fnv#NYSE">FNV</a>) reported first-quarter results somewhat above expectations as it looks ahead to production growth of 2.3% this year, driven by new mines on which it holds streams, Greenstone and Tocantinzinho, both ramping up in the second half. Franco&#39;s guidance now excludes Cobre Panama, which it has written off, though opportunities for recovery, either from a mine restart or from an arbitration award, are real. Franco has a rock-solid balance sheet, with $2.3 billion of available capital.
It has an active pipeline of new deals, with a focus on gold, though CEO Paul Brink said they were looking at other resources, including lithium. Most opportunities it is reviewing now are streams on byproducts of base metals producers, with the company seeing somewhat larger opportunities than recently, with opportunities above $300,000.
<h2>Hope for Cobre Panama as Country Votes</h2>
Elections for a new president in Panama are taking place today. Polls have already closed, and the results are expected late tonight. All of the candidates except one are, to differing extents, pro-business. The front runner, Jos&eacute; Mulino, who was the running mate of the popular ex-President Ricard Martinelli &mdash; he dropped out after a court upheld his conviction for money laundering &mdash; is known to support new negotiations with First Quantum to reopen the mine.
However, as Brink noted, the candidates have been mostly circumspect in commenting on what their approach will be, adding that once a new government is in place, he is sure dialog will take place. In addition to the loss of GDP, tax revenue, and jobs from the mine closure and the threat of an international arbitration award, there are also heavy costs to permanently closing the mine, estimated at between $3 billion and $6 billion. Some politicians have suggested that mine owner First Quantum should pay those costs, but that is highly unlikely. All in all, the country stands to lose huge amounts of money if it shuts down the mine permanently, in addition to the credit downgrade and loss of credibility. With top management, a solid balance sheet, and a well-diversified portfolio by asset, operator, geography, and commodity, Franco remains a core holding.
Given the recent price recovery, we are holding, except for new investors who can buy.
<h2>Barrick Can&#39;t Get No Respect</h2>
Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gold#NYSE">GOLD</a>) reported first-quarter earnings somewhat better than expected, though of course the company had already pre-released lower production and higher cost guidance. It was a weak quarter, but for Barrick, production usually increases during the year, and the company re-iterated its 2024 guidance, looking for increased production from Pueblo Viejo on the back of the plant expansion as well as the restart of Porgera.
Gold cash costs at $1,051 were up from less than $1,000 in the prior quarter but in line with implied guidance as per-ounce costs increased on lower production. Other costs are under control, and G&amp;A was down.
<h2>Talks With Mali and Company Says &quot;No&quot; to Anglo Bid</h2>
CEO Mark Bristow rejected reports that the Mali government is about to nationalize the Loulo-Gounkoto mine, saying that the government had assured the company, in writing, that it has no intention of expropriating the mine. Bristow said that there were ongoing discussions with the government about &quot;an equitable sharing of benefits.&quot;
A new mining code, introduced in September, exempted existing operations, including Barrick&#39;s mine. Separately, the company announced an exploration earn-in on some land in Jamaica, which Bristow said had geology comparable to that of the Dominican Republic, where Barrick&#39;s large Pueblo Viejo mine is located. Bristow also said the company would not make a bid for AngloAmerican, which has received an offer from BHP, adding that the company had plenty of organic opportunities.
After the results, Barrick stock fell once again, in what I consider an irrational response to the headline numbers, given the production decline had already been announced (and the stock fell on that) as well as the credible reasons for seeing higher production later in the year. Barrick&#39;s higher jurisdictional risk profile is well known, but on most metrics, including the net debt levels, Barrick is superior to major peers.
Buy.
<h2>Pan American Boosts Its Balance Sheet as It Eyes Growth Ahead</h2>
Pan American Silver Corp. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/paas#NYSE">PAAS</a>) has agreed to sell its La Arena mine and the associated La Arena II project in Peru to Zijin Mining for $295 million, with $245 million in cash now and and a contingent payment of $50 million upon production from La Arena II. In addition, Pan American will retain a 1.5% gold NSR royalty on the La Arena II project. The price is considered a good one for Pan American.
The company has been selling certain non-core assets after it purchased Yamana last year, using proceeds to cut debt. It ended the year with $441 million in cash and a total debt of $802 million, some related to construction debt and leases, as well as notes that came with Yamana. There are no maturities until the end of 2027, and with an undrawn $750 million credit facility, Pan American is in good shape.
The company has, however, traditionally operated without debt (other than project debt), and there is potential for additional asset sales, though, as with La Arena, the company is now in no rush and can wait for good prices, particularly since the debt carries low interest rates. The La Colorada Skarn deposit will require major capital, however, and the company is looking for a partner on that project. We continue to like Pan American, with strong management and a broad asset base, as well as growth, not only from La Colorada but from the potential restart of the large Escobal silver mine in Guatemala.
Though the company remains reasonable value, given the 50% move in the stock since the beginning of March, we will hold for now.
<h2>Another Project Comes Back to Lara</h2>
Lara Exploration Ltd. (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/lraxf#OTC">LRAXF</a>) has received back its Curionopolis Iron Project after settling a lawsuit with Vertical Mining. The project, in the Caraj&aacute;s District in northern Brazil, had been optioned to Vertical in 2009, which undertook much exploration and technical work, including putting out a resource estimate, but it defaulted on payments to Lara.
The return of the project is a positive for Lara since it can now look to option or sell it to a new partner, receive payments, and keep a royalty. This is one more example of the value in Lara&#39;s portfolio in addition to the flagship Planalto Copper project, where a resource estimate is expected by early June. With top management and sufficient capital for its near-term work, Lara, at a market cap of less than C$40 million, is extremely undervalued. Planalto alone is worth a multiple of that, while several other projects could add real value.
Despite the run-up in the stock price &mdash; it has almost doubled since an exaggerated low in mid March&mdash; Lara remains a strong buy.
Metalla Royalty &amp; Streaming Ltd. (AMEX:MTA) stock fell sharply after a widely read newsletter writer put out a sell recommendation after it hit his stop loss. The stock was at $3.20 in late April.
Take advantage of the selling to buy.

CENTRAL BANKS STILL BUYING According to new numbers from the World Gold Council, central banks bought almost 290 tonnes of gold during the the first there months of the year a first-quarter record.
Although higher than most quarters last year, it is less than the third-quarter peak of 358 tonnes. Nonetheless, contrary to what appeared in January and early February, bank buying is now on track to exceed last year.

Gold Co. Beats Estimates as Panama Goes to the Polls

Global Analyst Adrian Day looks for signs that investors are finally turning to gold, and provides an update on developments at a couple of stocks on his list.
A month ago, we wrote about the drivers of the gold price and, in particular, who was buying; at that point, it had gone up $190 in the previous month. Now, it is up another $150 over the past four weeks. Though central bank buying remains the prime driver of higher gold prices, there are indications of a shift from institutional and retail investors that could see gold move significantly higher from here.
Most reports on various avenues of gold buying are lagging, so we can&#39;t be sure what has happened in the past few weeks. Central banks, which bought 1,037 metric tonnes in 2023, a little shy of the 2022 record, are continuing to buy this year. Complete global data for February is not yet available, but the countries that have reported suggest continued buying. So far, almost 19 tonnes of net buying has been reported. That&#39;s down from over 45 tonnes in January.
So far, some of the largest recent buyers have reported, including China, which bought over 12 tonnes in February, up from ten the month before and the highest number since October. A broad range of countries also bought, including the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Turkey, and Mauritania. The buying was offset by a large sale of almost 12 tonnes from Uzbekistan, which has been both a large buying and selling over the past two years. We do not know where the February number will end. So far, though strong, it represents a slowing of the trend of the last two years.
<h2>Retail Buyers Are Still Not in the Market</h2>
Similarly, we do not have global reports for coin sales, but anecdotal evidence suggests only a slight shift toward buying in recent weeks. Coin dealers in both the U.S. and Europe are reporting a pick-up in interest from gold buyers but still say flows are neutral at best; coin premiums are reflecting weak sales.
We do, however, have up-to-date data for gold ETF flows, and that shows a shift in the last few weeks. There have been inflows the last two days (Wednesday and Thursday; Friday&#39;s data have not yet been reported) as gold tackled $2,300, but outflows for four of the five days before. So, it is too soon to say that there has been a clear reversal, though any inflows are somewhat encouraging after 18 months of steady outflows. The selling has continued this year, for a total of 3.4 million ounces so far. (See graph on next page.) In context, the ETF buying on Thursday, 37,484 ounces or just over one tonne, is little more than one-third of what the central banks have been buying every single day.

So, it seems clear that retail and institutional investors are not what is continuing to drive the gold price.
Ongoing reports on central bank buying will tell much of the story. However, there also appears to be a new source of demand, and it is not retail or traditional investors.
Rather, we suspect it is wealthy families and institutions, primarily in the Middle East and Asia but also in Europe, looking for an insurance asset to protect against financial instability. Gold&#39;s strength in the face of factors that are usually headwinds &mdash; a strong dollar, high interest rates, a (seemingly) strong economy, and buoyant equity markets &mdash; suggests that it is not traditional investment demand.
Of course, renewed expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts favor gold. We have said repeatedly over the past 18 months that the gold sector will move when the Fed cuts rates before it has quashed inflation, and investors now sense that we are very close to that point. However, this past week, Fed chairman Jerome Powell showed a more hawkish tone than he had exhibited at his last post-meeting press conference. That, along with the strong jobs report and other economic reports this past week, would not increase the expectations of an imminent rate cut. Yet, upward drove the gold price.
<h2>The Economy Is Not as Strong as It Would Seem</h2>
Much economic data &mdash; including consumer debt levels &mdash; is also not encouraging and suggests that the Fed may cut rates soon. And the market knows it. Powell has specifically said that higher unemployment might prompt a rate cut.
And we know that the labor market is not as strong as the headlines suggest. The labor participation rate is still below pre-Covid. Government jobs have been one of the largest components of new hires. The ongoing difference between the household and payroll reports suggests many people have two jobs.
This year, indeed, there has been a loss of over 1.5 million full-time jobs but a gain in part-time jobs, according to government reports. (Thanks to Independent Speculator.) Even with all that, the headline unemployment rate has been inching up over the past year.
<h2>Early Signs of Some Interest as Gold Stocks and Silver Outperform Gold</h2>
The hard data on ETF and other fund flows clearly indicate that this segment is not responsible for gold&#39;s recent move, again pointing to over-the-counter purchases by large buyers that are not reported. Such buying is most likely from a relatively small number of very wealthy buyers. If these individuals are buying as an insurance asset, they too, like the central banks, will be long-term holders.
Another very interesting development is that both silver and gold stocks are now outperforming gold itself, something that normally signals a strong market and an increase in investor interest. Since the beginning of last month, gold and silver stocks have outperformed silver, which has outperformed gold. The stocks have returned more than twice that of gold.
So in sum, although looking at the year as a while, it would appear that central banks, and perhaps some very large family investors, have been buyers while institutional and retail, particularly in the West, have continued to be sellers, there has definitely been a shift in the last month.
If this continues, the moves could be explosive. The size of the gold and silver equity markets &mdash; a total market cap of about half a trillion, compared with over $3 trillion for Microsoft alone &mdash; suggests that only a small shift in assets from the erstwhile market leaders into the gold stocks will see stocks move dramatically higher.
<h2>Franco Buys Small Royalty as Large Transactions Are Elusive</h2>
Franco-Nevada Corp. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fnv#NYSE">FNV</a>) purchased a royalty from Scottie Resources on some exploration ground in the Golden Triangle, British Colombia, for just over CA$8 million.
The Golden Triangle has been a key focus for Newmont since its Newcrest acquisition. This is a very small deal for Franco and on early-stage exploration.
What is noteworthy, perhaps, is that Franco also bought CA$1.5 million in equity, another sign of Franco being prepared to shift away from the straight royalty or stream transactions as there are fewer opportunities to deploy large amounts of capital.
Offering equity, as it has done in some other recent deals with debt, perhaps helps the company win the royalty. As with Wheaton, we can probably expect to see more small transactions in the current environment.
We continue to like Franco as a core holding. It can be bought by investors who do not currently own it.
<h2>Altius Loses Takings Appeal</h2>
Altius Minerals Corp. (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/atusf#OTC">ATUSF</a>) reported that the Alberta Court of Appeal had upheld the earlier decision to summarily dismiss Altius&#39;s takings claim over its royalty on the Genesee coal mine. When the Alberta government ordered the power plant that was
Genesee&#39;s sole customer to switch away from coal, the mine owners were compensated, but Altius, the owner of a royalty on the mine, was not. The court ruled that the legal test for constructive taking was not met. Altius said it will determine if any further legal steps are warranted.
While disappointing, we do not believe that any potential award was priced into Altius&#39; share price. Altius continues to be a core holding for us, with broad exposure to the commodities space.

Investors Move Toward Gold

If anyone needs any proof of how the landscape of investment has changed as a result of a handful of technology companies over the past decade, take a look at the world&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/magnificent-seven">biggest sovereign wealth fund (SWF)</a>.
SWFs typically take a more conservative investment approach, more like pension funds, as they represent crown wealth rather than simply &#8220;other people&#8217;s money.&#8221; Norges Bank Investment Management (<a href="https://www.nbim.no/en/">NBIM</a>) is no different — or wasn&#8217;t in the past. 
But things have changed in the past couple of years.
We&#8217;ve all witnessed the rise of the mega-cap stock. The Magnificent Seven of technology stocks have ridden the wave of interest in artificial intelligence development to become companies with valuations into the hundreds of billions of dollars — in some cases trillions of dollars.
These riskier spectrum assets have become the foundation of investment at NBIM in the past couple of years. Let&#8217;s look at how things have changed over the past decade.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">NBIM in 2014</h3>
A decade ago, NBIM was worth $1.08 trillion and took a much more conservative approach to investment.
In 2014 the Norwegian fund allotted $665.3 billion to equity markets, or 61.8% of its total investments, while 36.5% of investments were allotted to bonds — mostly the government bonds of the U.S., Japan, Germany and the U.K.. The rest of its holdings were scattered around various real estate and infrastructure projects.
Within its equity portfolio, its top five holdings were:

<li>Nestle SA (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NSRGF#OTC">NSRGF</a>), the Swiss food giant.</li>
<li>Novartis AG (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVS#NYSE">NVS</a>), Swiss pharma giant, at the time, the world&#8217;s biggest drugmaker by market cap. </li>
<li>Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), the iPhone 6 model had just been launched.</li>
<li>Royal Dutch Shell — now just Shell (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHEL#NYSE">SHEL</a>) the U.K.-based oil giant.</li>
<li>BlackRock Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLK#NYSE">BLK</a>) the world&#8217;s largest asset manager.</li>
</ol>
These companies represented solid value. Good dividend yields, from reliable corporations. A considered and conservative investment approach for a wealth manager that had recently come through the 2008-09 financial crisis and was still knee-deep into the eurozone sovereign debt crisis.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">NBIM in 2024</h3>
Now look at 2024. Notwithstanding high-interest rates, rising global geopolitical tensions, continuing — but receding — recession fears, suspicions of a stock market bubble and high-tech valuations, the landscape has changed dramatically. Even for a conservative institution such as the Norway SWF.
Now worth a total of nearly $1.4 trillion, a much larger 70.5% of its holdings are in equities, with just 27.1% in fixed income.
And, along with its higher allocation to equity markets, it has also raised the stakes on its top five holdings. In 2014, it allotted $8.02 billion to its top-holding Nestle, and just over $6 billion to its second Novartis.
In 2024, its top holdings are very familiar, but its allocations are vastly higher:

<li>Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) $31 billion</li>
<li>Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) $16 billion</li>
<li>Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) $14 billion</li>
<li>Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) $12 billion</li>
</ol>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wealth Fund Taking Greater Risk For Greater Returns</h2>
Thus, even the world&#8217;s biggest SWF has become an investor of the Magnificent Seven. Given the weight of returns seen by these half dozen or so tech megacaps over the past year, it&#8217;s hard not to be.
Norway&#8217;s sovereign wealth fund says that it invests in around 9,000 companies globally but, considering that its top five equity investments represent nearly 13% of its total $822 billion equity allocation, the rest is spread very thinly.
And so, although it claims its investments are spread to &#8220;capture global value creation and diversify risk as best as possible,&#8221; it&#8217;s taking more risk than it ever has done before with 13% of its equity exposure in one broad market segment on a single equity index in companies based in a single country.
While it has certainly come good on the value creation side of the above equation, the risk that a sudden market downturn could wipe several billions from the fund&#8217;s holdings is very real.
What&#8217;s going to drive that market downturn is difficult to predict at the moment, however, with earnings and guidance for much of the U.S. tech sector looking good, and predictions for a soft, or no, landing for the U.S. economy leading current thought. Just watch out for geopolitical developments.

Magnificent 7 Stocks Become The Star Attractions For Norway's Sovereign Wealth Fund

After hitting a fresh record high on Monday, cocoa prices have slumped 13% — a sharp fall in just three days. But experts say the market remains in critical short supply, which is why Valentine&#8217;s Day <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/02/37141514/cocoa-annual-inflation-tops-100-pushes-valentines-day-chocolate-pralines-to-unprecedented-costs">chocolates were so expensive</a>. 
Meanwhile, hedge funds continue to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/02/37183247/choccy-horror-show-hedge-funds-pile-in-as-cocoa-soars-to-record-high">build up long positions</a>.
Despite the slump over the past three days, the U.S. cocoa futures price has jumped 43% to $5,999 a tonne since the start of the year. Four days ago it hit a fresh record high of $6,929.
This is particularly hard on companies such as Hershey Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HSY#NYSE">HSY</a>). The company reported earlier this month that it now expects flat earnings for 2024 due to higher raw materials costs.
&#8220;Historic cocoa prices are expected to limit earnings growth this year,&#8221; said Hershey CEO Michele Buck.
Shares in Hershey have fallen 8% to $186.25 since reporting its quarterly earnings and 2024 outlook on February 8.

But what does this mean to the consumer? Ether you&#8217;ll pay more for your chocolate and candy bars, or pack sizes are smaller. 
&#8220;Chocolate prices are about to rise — and bars and boxes will shrink too,&#8221; <a href="https://twitter.com/JavierBlas/status/1759597009240047995">said</a> Javier Blas, columnist for Bloomberg and ex-FT commodities correspondent on X.
The cocoa crisis has been a long time in the making. Most farmers in West Africa are overwhelmingly poor smallholders who lack the means to reinvest in their farms. Now, left with mainly old trees, farmers face lower yields and plants that are more susceptible to disease.
&#8220;Both factors are at play this year, and the upshot is a brutal gap between supply and demand, with the market heading for a deficit of between 300,000 and 500,000 tonnes. If confirmed, that would be the largest shortfall in 65 years,&#8221; said Blas.
While this doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean there&#8217;ll be a scarcity of candy bars on shelves — there are global warehoused stockpiles of cocoa — these stocks are wearing thin, adding to price pressure.
The International Cocoa Organization <a href="https://www.icco.org/wp-content/uploads/ICCO-Monthly-Cocoa-Market-Report-%E2%80%93-January-2024.pdf">said</a>: &#8220;It would be beneficial if all major players reconsider the structural issues being faced by the cocoa sector — aged trees, diseases, remunerative farm gate prices, climatic challenges, etc.&#8221;
The World Cocoa Foundation <a href="https://worldcocoafoundation.org/news-and-resources/press-release/world-cocoa-foundation-wcf-draws-up-a-new-landscape-for-an-equitable-cocoa-sector">said</a> it was addressing the imbalance between the wages earned by farmers in Cote d&#8217;Ivoire and Ghana, the world&#8217;s two largest cocoa producers, and prices charged to western consumers.
&#8220;Improving farmer income must remain at the forefront of everything that we do,&#8221; said Chris Vincent, president.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">This Isn&#8217;t A Short-Term Problem</h3>
Better-paid farmers able to finally plant new trees won&#8217;t solve the problem overnight. It can take around five years before new cocoa trees start to produce seed pods.
This adds up to profits for traders and hedge funds who built up a near $9 billion net long position.
Still, there remains rising costs and pressure on margins for chocolate companies such as Hershey in the weeks leading up to Easter.
Shares in rival Mondelez International Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MDLZ#NASDAQ">MDLZ</a>) — owner of Cadbury, Milka and Toblerone chocolate brands — are down 5% this month. Nestle SA (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NSRGF#OTC">NSRGF</a>), owner of Toll Bar, is down 8% in February.
There is no exchange-traded fund to track the price of cocoa directly, but the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLP#NYSE">XLP</a>) has been performing reasonably well over the past few months. Since mid-October, it has gained 12.6% to $74.56.

Following another round of meetings last month, Reuters noted, Le Maire stated that Unilever, Nestle, and PepsiCo were among the companies not adhering to the price reduction initiative.
Consumer groups argue that &quot;shrinkflation&quot; is widespread, with supermarkets like Carrefour engaging in it with their private label products.
The shrinkflation warnings are displayed in all Carrefour stores in France and will continue until the targeted suppliers agree to reduce their prices.&nbsp;
While the retailer may extend these warnings to other products, there are no plans to expand this initiative to other countries.
Le Maire announced last month that consumer goods companies and retailers had agreed to advance annual price negotiations to September, which typically take place next year. These negotiations will result in price reductions starting from January.

The Justice Department&#39;s consumer-protection branch is conducting an investigation into infant formula maker Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/abt">ABT</a>).
The Wall Street Journal has <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/abbott-under-criminal-investigation-over-baby-formula-11674255871?mod=hp_lead_pos2" target="_blank">reported</a> that the Justice Department is investigating conduct at Abbott&#39;s plant in Sturgis, Michigan, citing people familiar with the matter.
&quot;The DOJ has informed us of its investigation, and we&#39;re cooperating fully,&quot; The WSJ quoted an Abbott spokesman saying.
Abbott recalled formula and shut down production at its Sturgis manufacturing plant in February 2022 after infants who&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/05/27243278/abbott-fda-agree-on-consent-decree-for-reopening-michigan-baby-formula-plant-what-you-need-to-know" target="_blank">consumed formula made at the facility&nbsp;became sick.</a>
