Five American small businesses have filed a federal lawsuit against President Donald Trump, accusing him of abusing powers to impose trade taxes under the guise of a national emergency, despite<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/regulations"> no such emergency existing.</a>



The companies submitted the <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cit.17080/gov.uscourts.cit.17080.2.0.pdf">complaint</a> on Monday to the U.S. Court of International Trade.



The plaintiffs argue that Trump unlawfully invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to justify global tariffs on imports without Congressional approval or clear economic justification. 



The companies pressing charges include:

<li>V.O.S. Selections Inc., a New York wine importer sourcing from 14 countries</li>



<li>Genova Pipe, a Utah-based manufacturer of plumbing materials</li>



<li>MicroKits LLC, a Virginia startup building educational electronics</li>



<li>FishUSA Inc., a Pennsylvania retailer specializing in fishing gear; and</li>



<li>Terry Precision Cycling LLC, a Vermont brand producing women's cycling apparel.</li>
</ul>



Each company indicates that the products they import are either unavailable in the U.S. or cannot be sourced domestically without significant delays or higher costs. The tariffs, they say, threaten their business models, margins and long-term viability.



These five businesses are asking the court to declare the actions illegal, block the implementation of the tariffs, and reaffirm Congress&#8217;s <a href="https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/R47679">constitutional role</a> in trade matters.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Is The Lawsuit About?</h3>



At the heart of the lawsuit is a claim that Trump overstepped his legal authority by using IEEPA to impose global tariffs. 



The plaintiffs argue that IEEPA is intended for emergencies like war or terrorism—not for addressing trade deficits, which they called a long-standing and non-threatening feature of international commerce.



"His claimed emergency is a figment of his own imagination," the lawsuit said.



&#8220;Trade deficits, which have persisted for decades without causing economic harm, are not an emergency.&#8221;



The so-called &#8220;Liberation Day Order,&#8221; issued on April 2, imposed the highest tariff rates seen since the Great Depression, applying across nearly every trade partner—regardless of whether those countries impose tariffs on U.S. goods, or have trade agreements with the U.S.



According to the filing, the formula used to determine tariff rates &#8220;is not an accepted methodology for calculating trade barriers and has no basis in economic theory.&#8221;



On April 9, a second executive order temporarily paused elevated tariffs on most countries for 90 days. A 10% global tariff remains fully in place, further exacerbating uncertainty for import-reliant businesses.



The administration justified the sweeping move by invoking a range of authorities, including the IEEPA, the National Emergencies Act, section 604 of the Trade Act of 1974, and section 301 of title 3 of the U.S. Code.



Yet, the plaintiffs argue that none of these statutes grants the president the authority to impose tariffs.



Article I of the Constitution explicitly gives Congress the power "to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises." Congress also regulates commerce with foreign nations.



In other words, they say, Trump acted unilaterally without legal or constitutional grounding.



&#8220;This Court should declare the President's unprecedented power grab illegal, enjoin the operation of the executive actions that purport to impose these tariffs under the IEEPA, and reaffirm this country's core founding principle: there shall be no taxation without representation,&#8221; the lawsuit states.



&#8220;Congress has not delegated any such power.&#8221;

Even with an extension, taxpayers must estimate and pay at least 90% of their tax liability by April 15 to minimize penalties. Possible penalties include:&nbsp;&nbsp;

Federal Tax Return Deadline Looms: What To Know About Extensions, Payments, Late Filings

Despite recent moves by President Donald Trump to ease tariff pressure, recession expectations for the U.S. economy remain elevated, with betting markets still pricing in a greater-than-even chance of an <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">economic contraction in 2025.</a>



As of April 14, on the CFTC-regulated prediction platform Kalshi, the market titled "Recession This Year?"—which defines a U.S. recession as two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth before the end of 2025—currently anticipates a 56% probability of such an event occurring.



Although that figure is down from 66% a week ago, it remains nearly three times higher than it was at the beginning of the year, when Trump was inaugurated for his second term.



A related Kalshi market, which speculates not if but when a recession will begin, assigns a 30% chance that the first quarter of 2025 already marked the beginning of a recession.



The White House recently announced two major developments aimed at alleviating tariff-related pressures. The first is a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs to facilitate trade negotiations. 



The second is a temporary exemption on key tech imports from China—such as semiconductors and smartphones—following Washington&#8217;s move to raise general Chinese import duties to as high as 145%. 



While these moves provided a short-term boost to financial markets and contributed to a modest rebound in risk appetite, they have done little to meaningfully shift recession expectations.

Among Wall Street's major investment banks, JPMorgan maintains one of the more downbeat forecasts, assigning a 60% chance of a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/44645681/jpmorgan-raises-recession-risk-to-60-as-largest-us-tax-hike-in-60-years-hits-global-economy">U.S. recession this year. </a>



<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/04/44723376/goldman-sachs-scraps-recession-call-after-trumps-surprise-tariff-pause-as-wall-street-marks-strongest-day-since-2008">Goldman Sachs lowered last week</a> its recession probability to 45% following the White House's tariff freeze, noting that trade-related risks have somewhat abated in the short term.



CEO sentiment across the country is echoing market caution. 



According to the April <a href="https://chiefexecutive.net/ceo-optimism-remains-at-multi-year-low-in-april-survey-amid-growing-recession-forecasts-and-uncertainty/">Chief Executive Confidence Survey</a>, U.S. CEOs are reporting their lowest confidence levels in current business conditions since the COVID-19 pandemic. 



The index, which is based on a scale of 1 to 10, fell from 5.0 in March to 4.6 in April 2025, marking a 28% decline since the beginning of 2025. The 12-month business outlook remains stagnant at 5.



The latest University of Michigan&#8217;s Consumer Sentiment index plunged to 50.4 in April, the lowest since 2022, falling short of expectations by a wide margin.



 &#8220;Consumers report multiple warning signs that raise the risk of recession,&#8221; said Joanne Hsu, Director at the Survey of Consumers.



Analyst Michael Gayed highlighted in an email that the latest inflation data only adds to the narrative of a cooling economy.



Both the Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index for March came in significantly below expectations, which Gayed says "probably clears the path for the Fed to cut rates, possibly as soon as next month." 



Yet, he warned that the backdrop behind those soft inflation numbers could reflect deeper problems, namely deteriorating business and consumer sentiment and rising expectations for a recession. Supporting that view, the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index for April fell sharply, landing at a nearly three-year low.



Ray Dalio, the billionaire founder of hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, issued a stark warning on <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/investor-predicted-2008-financial-crisis-says-worried-something-worse-rcna201040">NBC's Meet the Press </a>over the weekend. 



"I'm worried about something worse than a recession," Dalio said, cautioning that if President Trump mishandles tariff policy and broader economic strategy, the consequences could be severe. "I think that right now we are at a decision-making point and very close to a recession."



Still, the White House remains steadfast that a downturn is not on the horizon. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett insisted on Monday that the U.S. would "100% not" fall into recession this year, despite what Wall Street economists, betting markets and CEOs are signaling.

If the world survives the tariff war of 2025, we might want to make some of the moves that paid off in the aftermath of prior almost-end-of-the-world events.



One of the best strategies is buying dividends and dividend growth.



Investors who bought stocks like Pfizer (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PFE#NYSE">PFE</a>), Altria (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MO#NYSE">MO</a>) and CapitalOne (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COF#NYSE">COF</a>) in early 2009 not only locked in high levels of income, their gains over the next decade were spectacular.



Buying high-yield stocks like Unum (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNM#NYSE">UNM</a>), Tanger Outlets (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SKT#NYSE">SKT</a>) and Marathon Petroleum (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MPC#NYSE">MPC</a>) in the spring of 2020 has also worked out extraordinarily well for investors who allowed rational thinking to overcome fear.



Unless the world ends, this time should offer the same opportunities to lock in high yields from companies that also offer the potential for outsized long-term gains.



Shares of Pfizer have once again fallen to levels that make the stock a high-yielding opportunity for patient investors.



Pfizer has a diverse drug portfolio and is in a strong position in the vaccine markets. Going forward, they are shedding the off-patent drug business to focus on innovation and newer products.



Pfizer generates massive amounts of free cash flow, which is used to pay down debt, buy back stock and pay dividends.



The company plans to pay out 50% of cash flow as dividends so the payout should continue to grow over time.



Ford Motor (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) is one of the best-positioned auto companies in the current environment and should do very well as the trade war progresses towards a conclusion.



Ford continues to dominate the pickup truck market and I don&#8217;t see that changing anytime soon.



Ford intends to have a presence in the EV market but will not abandon the traditional market anytime soon. The Mustang Mach-E and Lightning F-150 electric vehicles are both selling well and attracting customers who have never considered Ford products before.



Ford has focused on reducing debt and strengthening its balance sheet over the past few years, and this strategy is working.



The company currently has over $25 billion in cash and securities on the books.



The stock is currently yielding over 7% and has excellent long-term appreciation potential from current levels.



UPS (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UPS#NYSE">UPS</a>) shares have also fallen to the level where the dividend is attractive. At the current price, the yield is over 7%.



UPS seems like a solid bet, even with some bumps in the road ahead. They&#8217;re the big dog in package delivery, handling way more daily packages than FedEx in the US.

This Strategy Always Outperforms In Bear Markets

Social media giant Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) could be forced to spinoff or divest Instagram and WhatsApp as the result of<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/social-media/24/11/42177636/meta-heads-to-trial-over-instagram-whatsapp-acquisitions"> a pending trial </a>with the Federal Trade Commission.



What Happened: Lina Khan, who stepped down as FTC Chair in January 2025, is speaking out as Meta's antitrust trial begins Monday. She previously accused the company of using monopoly power to acquire smaller rivals like <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/legal/25/04/44781970/star-trek-quoting-judge-boasberg-once-targeted-by-trump-could-decide-if-mark-zuckerbergs-meta-gets-to-keep-instagram">Instagram and WhatsApp.</a>



The FTC accuses Meta of using its considerable power to acquire Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014.



"It saw companies like Instagram and WhatsApp experiencing astronomical growth, and that's the point at which it resorted to this buy-or-bury scheme where, if it couldn't outcompete a rival, it either bought them out or cut them off its network," Khan <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/14/former-ftc-chair-khan-meta-acquisitions-instagram-whatsapp.html">said </a>on "Squawk Box" Monday.



Khan said that Meta, previously known as Facebook, "panicked" when it made the acquisitions and could still be forced to reverse course years later.



"There's no expiration date when it comes to the illegality of the transaction. I think there is a way in which the entire social networking ecosystem looks different today because Facebook was permitted to go out and make these acquisitions."



Khan said the FTC's case, which dates back to 2020, is about "free and fair trade."



Facebook paid $1 billion to acquire Instagram in 2012 and $19 billion to acquire WhatsApp in 2014.

Why It's Important: The initial FTC complaint was dismissed before being accepted in 2024 with an amended complaint. Meta has filed a pretrial brief saying it disagrees with the FTC and that the company is not a monopoly.



On Monday, new FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson said Meta is "certainly" a monopoly during an <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/video/6371472206112">interview </a>on Fox Business.



While the FTC trial could take some time, Meta could be forced to divest Instagram and/or WhatsApp. 



The FTC trial unfolds as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg seeks to dismiss the case while also reportedly strengthening ties with President Donald Trump.



Zuckerberg <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/12/42454227/months-after-trump-threatened-to-put-mark-zuckerberg-in-prison-meta-ceo-donates-1m-to-president-elects-inaugural-event">donated $1 million</a> to Trump's inauguration fund and has had several meetings with Trump since his January inauguration. Ferguson was questioned by Congress if he would dismiss the case against Meta if asked to do so by Trump.



"Until the trial is over and until we actually get a liability verdict and then a remedy, we're all going to have to wait and see," Khan said.



There are betting markets on Polymarket for potential moves by Meta due to the FTC trial.

META Price Action: Meta stock is down 1.7% to $534.10 on Monday versus a 52-week trading range of $414.50 to $740.89. Meta stock is down 10.9% year-to-date in 2025.

'No Expiration Date' On Meta's Antitrust Case, Says Former FTC Chair As Trial Begins

Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood brushed off concerns that President Donald Trump's tariff policies could cause economic and geopolitical disaster in a weekend note on the high volatility the stock market <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44774499/wall-street-panic-extends-to-main-street-as-us-china-trade-war-escalates-bond-vigilantes-make-a-comeback-this-week-in-markets">saw last week.</a>



What Happened: Wood regularly comments on Ark portfolio names with 15% weekly moves, and in light of last week's market turbulence, she used the opportunity to weigh in on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44655980/if-president-trump-cares-about-his-legacy-cathie-wood-weighs-in-on-trumps-tariff-turmoil-and-potential-economic-impact">Trump's latest tariff policies.</a>



"While many observers fear that the Trump tariff policy is a recipe for economic and geopolitical disaster, we believe that what looked at first glance like the largest and most regressive tax increase in U.S. history could turn out to be quite the opposite," Wood said.



Wood said that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent taking the lead on negotiating with allies could lead to "lower tariffs and non-tariff barriers."



"Neither of which would have been possible without the shock therapy that President Trump administered," Wood said of the potential for lower tariffs.



Wood highlighted in her note that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been a "strong advocate" for this solution to tariffs and non-tariff trade barriers that have evolved in the last 50 years.

Why It's Important: Wood notes that Trump's tariff policies have caused high volatility but are likely setting things up for a strong second half of the year.



"Our working assumption was that President Trump has been aiming for robust economic growth and a strong stock market during the second half of this year, ahead of the midterm elections next year," Wood said. "How many times this week did he mention that the economy and stock market are going to boom!"



Wood said that prior to the recent tariff-driven volatility, Ark Invest had been anticipating strong growth in the second half of 2025.



"We do believe that the last leg of a three-year rolling recession will result in negative Gross Domestic Product growth for the first and second quarters."



Wood said that the interest rate shock that started in 2022 and the government&#8217;s efforts to prop GDP up are giving way, leading to the government's first recession in 30 years.



"The Administration and the Federal Reserve will have more degrees of freedom to stimulate than most investors have been expecting. Now that much of the economy has seized up in response to the fear of tariffs, the drop in activity is likely to be more severe than otherwise would haven the case, a clarion call for tax cuts, deregulation, and lower interest rates."



Price Action: The flagship Ark Innovation ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARKK#BATS">ARKK</a>) trades at $46.80 on Monday. The ETF is down 18.5% year-to-date in 2025 and up 1.0% over the last year. The ETF was up 11.1% over the last five days.



The Ark Next Generation Internet ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARKW#BATS">ARKW</a>) trades at $94.30 on Monday. The ETF is down 14.1% year-to-date in 2025 and up 19.2% over the last year. The ETF was up 7.5% over the last five days.



The two largest Ark ETFs have trailed the year-to-date performance of the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), which tracks the S&amp;P 500 Index. The SPY ETF is down 7.5% year-to-date in 2025 and up 6.2% over the last year. The SPY was up 7.5% over the last five days.

Cathie Wood Says Trump's 'Shock Therapy' Tariff Policies May Have Been Necessary

A temporary delay in new U.S. tariffs on tech imports from China sparked <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/semiconductors">a broad semiconductor rally</a>.



What Happened: The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) jumped 2.5% by 9:40 a.m. ET Monday, extending its rally to 19% from last week's lows.



Monday&#8217;s top individual gainers within the SOXX ETF included:

<li>Entegris Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ENTG#NASDAQ">ENTG</a>) surged 6.7% to $74.37</li>



<li>Intel Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INTC#NASDAQ">INTC</a>) rose 6.1% to $20.95</li>

In a research note published on Monday, Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya called the one-to-two-month delay on electronics tariffs &#8220;incrementally positive.&#8221; The delay, which allows industry debate before the White House finalizes so-called &#8220;sectoral&#8221; tariffs targeting semiconductors, was enough to trigger <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/chipmakers">sharp gains in chip stocks</a>.



Sentiment also improved following the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's decision Friday to exclude several electronic categories—such as smartphones and PCs—from immediate reciprocal tariffs.



"The delay is a net positive," Arya said, citing how electronics represent roughly 50% of global chip demand. 



"It allows for debate and discussion on this critical end-market,&#8221; he added. 



Arya noted that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), the world's largest semiconductor buyer, was also excluded from tariff pressure during Trump&#8217;s first term.



Arya reaffirmed a bullish stance on chipmakers with exposure to artificial intelligence and reshoring themes, including Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) and Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>).



Cadence Design Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CDNS#NASDAQ">CDNS</a>) and Synopsys Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNPS#NASDAQ">SNPS</a>) remain his key preferences among chip-design software firms.



For semiconductor capital equipment—a group seen as direct beneficiaries of U.S. manufacturing—Arya highlighted Lam Research Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LRCX#NASDAQ">LRCX</a>) and KLA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KLAC#NASDAQ">KLAC</a>).



The analyst also noted a potential tailwind from increased domestic production efforts. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>)&#8217;s $195 billion U.S. investments, Apple's $500 billion pledge and Nvidia's $200 billion U.S. expansion could all influence the shaping of final tariff rules.



"We expect over time for TSMC to front-end process most—if not all—semis required by its U.S. fabless customers within its Arizona fabs," Arya said, adding that a potential Intel-TSMC joint venture could further boost domestic chip output.

Why It Matters: Despite Monday's rally, Arya maintained a cautious view on chipmakers heavily exposed to consumer-facing segments like smartphones and PCs. 



After all, President Donald Trump clarified Sunday that electronics aren&#8217;t fully exempt. They will instead be folded into a separate sector-focused tariff plan to be announced in the coming months. 



Therefore, it&#8217;s unclear how sectoral tariffs will apply to U.S. electronics assembled in China using foreign-made chips.



"Semis remain a high beta sector and exposed to volatility," Arya said. However, he expects companies tied to AI and infrastructure to remain well-positioned to deliver on earnings expectations.



One risk Arya flagged is the upcoming May 15 compliance deadline for new U.S. rules governing the export of AI chips, which could limit shipments outside a small group of 19 &#8220;Tier 1&#8221; nations.



Still, with the delay in electronics tariffs offering space for negotiation, investors appear to be betting that the worst-case trade scenarios for U.S. chipmakers could be avoided, at least for now.

7 Chipmaker Stocks Set To Gain As Trump Delays Tariff Blow On Key China Tech Imports: Bank Of America

Wall Street pared early morning gains by midday Monday, as investor caution returned despite a temporary easing in U.S.-China trade tensions. While the initial market reaction was positive, especially in tech, enthusiasm faded as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">the trading session progressed.</a>



Over the weekend, the White House announced a provisional exemption for smartphones and semiconductors from China&#8217;s proposed 145% trade tariff. These items will instead face a 20% levy—linked to fentanyl-related enforcement—until sector-specific duties are finalized.



The development triggered a strong premarket rally in technology stocks. Yet, those gains were sharply trimmed by midday amid broader geopolitical and policy concerns.



During a White House meeting with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, President Donald Trump said he plans to impose tariffs on pharmaceutical imports to boost domestic manufacturing. 



He reiterated a hardline stance on Iran, warning of severe consequences if Tehran develops nuclear weapons, but also suggested &#8220;flexibility&#8221; in tariff negotiations, emphasizing a desire not to harm U.S. businesses.



Defensive and domestic-oriented sectors such as real estate, utilities, and consumer staples outperformed broader markets. In contrast, consumer discretionary was the only sector trading in negative territory.



Treasury yields dropped significantly, reflecting increased demand for U.S. government debt and easing fears of foreign liquidation. The 2-year yield fell 10 basis points to 3.87%, while 10-year benchmark yield dropped 7 basis points to 4.42%.



Gold pulled back 1% to $3,200 per ounce, pausing after a three-session rally. Crude oil fell 0.8% to $61 per barrel, while natural gas slid 2.9% to $3.39 per MMBtu, eyeing its lowest level since last Wednesday.



Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) was little changed at $84,000, while Ethereum (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/eth/usd">ETH</a>) gained 2.1% to $1,630.

Wall Street Pulls Back After Early Gains As Tariff Uncertainties Persist: What's Driving Markets Monday?

Crude oil prices have come under pressure from ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and China, which have cast uncertainty over global growth and fuel demand. Last week, Energy Secretary Chris Wright spoke positively about the oil and shale industry despite the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44667862/oil-crashes-to-60-per-barrel-as-recession-fears-grow">steep drop in prices.</a> 



What to Know: Wright, a former CEO of Liberty Energy, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LBRT#NYSE">LBRT</a>) with firsthand experience in the shale sector, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/11/us-energy-secretary-bullish-on-shale-despite-plunging-oil-prices-.html">told</a> CNBC in an interview that he remains optimistic about the industry&#8217;s ability to adapt and prosper. 



"The U.S. shale industry is going to survive and thrive," Wright said.



"But of course, investment decisions are going to be tailored if prices stay this low for a long period of time. But I'm quite bullish on the U.S. industry," he added.&nbsp;

Crude oil prices are down nearly 27% in 2025, trading below the key $65 per barrel threshold identified by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas as the break-even point for Permian Basin operators like Chevron Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) and Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>). 



Still, Wright highlighted the oil industry's ability to innovate and referenced the 2014–2016 downturn when shale production surged amid weak demand.&nbsp;



"In 2015 and 2016 oil prices twice hit $28, and what happened? What did the U.S. shale industry do in that time — innovate, get smarter, drive their costs down, and that's what's happening right now," Wright said.



What Else: Energy analysts at Goldman Sachs recently reduced their oil forecasts for December 2025 to $62 per barrel for Brent and $58 for WTI, with additional downside expected in 2026. The analysts noted GDP downgrades and forecasts of a "stagnating" U.S. economy.&nbsp;



Adding to the pressure on oil prices, OPEC+ oil producers recently announced a massive production increase to 411,000 barrels per day next month. Meanwhile, the group <a href="https://www.opec.org/monthly-oil-market-report.html">cut its</a> 2025–26 global oil demand growth forecast on Monday by 100,000 barrels per day due to slower growth resulting from Trump's tariffs. 



OPEC said it expects 1.3 million barrels per day growth each year, still above estimates from others like the EIA of 900,000 and Goldman Sachs estimate of 500,000.&nbsp;



The United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>), which tracks the daily price movements of light, sweet crude oil, was up 0.43% at the time of publication on Monday.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright Is 'Bullish' As Oil Prices Crater

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>)&nbsp;shares are trading higher on Monday after the&nbsp;company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/goldman-sachs" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported its&nbsp;first-quarter&nbsp;results</a>.



Revenue of&nbsp;$15.06 billion beat the consensus <a target="_blank" href="https://www.goldmansachs.com/pressroom/press-releases/current/pdfs/2025-q1-results.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">of</a> $14.81 billion. Revenue increased by&nbsp;6%&nbsp;year-over-year, reflecting growth in Global Banking &amp; Markets. Net interest income rose to $2.90 billion, up from $1.37 billion a year ago quarter.



Goldman Sachs clocked&nbsp;GAAP EPS of&nbsp;$14.12,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beating the consensus of&nbsp;$12.35</a>.



Provision for credit losses was&nbsp;$287 million&nbsp;for the&nbsp;first quarter, lower than $318 million a year ago quarter, reflecting net provisions related to the credit card portfolio.



Segment Revenues:&nbsp;Global Banking &amp; Markets revenues were&nbsp;$10.71 billion, up&nbsp;10%&nbsp;year-over-year. Net revenues from Equity grew&nbsp;27%&nbsp;year-over-year to&nbsp;$4.19 billion, reflecting significantly higher net revenues in intermediation and financing.



Also, net revenues in Fixed Income, Currency, and Commodities (FICC) were&nbsp;$4.40 billion,&nbsp;up&nbsp;2%&nbsp;year-over-year, primarily reflecting higher net revenues in FICC financing.



On the other hand, Investment Banking fees declined 8%&nbsp;year over year to&nbsp;$1.91 billion due to a considerable decline in net revenues in the Advisory business. Investment banking fees backlog increased compared with the end of 2024.



Asset &amp; Wealth Management revenue was&nbsp;$3.68 billion,&nbsp;down 3%&nbsp;year over year. Total Wealth management client assets stood at ~$1.6 trillion.



In the&nbsp;first quarter, total Assets Under Supervision (AUS) saw a net inflow of&nbsp;$24 billion. AUS increased by&nbsp;$36 billion&nbsp;to a record&nbsp;$3.17 trillion in the quarter.



Stock Buyback:&nbsp;In the&nbsp;first quarter, Goldman Sachs repurchased stock worth&nbsp;$4.36 billion. In the quarter, the Board approved a new share buyback program of up to $40 billion.



Dividend: On April 11, 2025, the Board declared a dividend per share of $3.00, payable on June 27, 2025, to shareholders of record as of May 30, 2025.



The Standardized CET capital ratio stood at 14.8%, and the Advanced CET capital ratio increased sequentially to&nbsp;15.5%. The book value per common share increased 2.2% to $344.20.



David Solomon, Chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs, said, "While we are entering the second quarter with a markedly different operating environment than earlier this year, we remain confident in our ability to continue to support our clients."



On the conference call, CEO Solomon said he expects significant M&amp;A activity throughout the rest of the year.

Goldman Sachs CEO Sees 'Markedly Different Operating Environment' Entering Q2, Announces $40 Billion Stock Buyback

Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) investors breathed a much-needed sigh of relief on Friday when the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/25/04/44780473/apple-escapes-supply-chain-crisis-as-trump-excludes-popular-electronics-from-tariffs">Trump administration announced</a> a decision to exempt iPhones, iPads, and Macs from the latest wave of reciprocal tariffs. This might have saved the company from a near-term cost storm.



But according to JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee, don't mistake this breather for a green light to go full bull &#8211; at least not yet.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Exemptions Offer Margin Relief, But It's Not All Clear</h2>



While the hardware tariff exemptions will help reduce immediate margin pressure, Chatterjee warns that the party could be short-lived. The exemptions look more like a patch than a permanent fix, especially with political winds swirling and the administration's long-standing push to bring manufacturing stateside.



AirPods and Apple Watch? Still on the tariff hook. And semiconductors? A wildcard, as Washington eyes potential new levies. 



That's a problem for Apple, which still leans heavily on Taiwanese fabs.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Diversification Accelerates Along With Cost Pressures</h2>



Supply chain reshuffling is already underway, with India stepping up iPhone assembly and Vietnam handling more accessories. 



But Chatterjee says diversification isn't cheap &#8211; and neither is ramping up U.S. manufacturing. Between pricier labor and higher fab costs, Apple's cost base could creep up even without new tariffs.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">iPhone 16E, FX Tailwinds Keep Near-Term Picture Intact</h2>



Still, it's not all gloom. The analyst sees a few tailwinds: Consumers might rush to buy iPhones ahead of any price hikes, FX is finally playing nice and the iPhone 16E could surprise on the upside with strong volume, especially in China.



Bottom line? 



The hardware tariff reprieve gives Apple a moment to breathe, but not enough to sprint. For now, Chatterjee is sticking with his Overweight rating &#8211; but he's trimmed his price target from $270 to $245, citing macro pressures and long-term cost risks.



So yes, Apple dodged a punch. But in this geopolitical dance, it's still light on its feet &#8211; because the next swing might be right around the corner.

Apple's Margins Catch A Break, But Road Ahead Still Looks  Bumpy

The <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">90-day tariff pause</a> announced by President Donald Trump&#8216;s administration may offer temporary relief, but JPMorgan analyst Fabio Bassi warns that the macro backdrop remains fragile.



While countries that have not retaliated are spared for now, a 10% blanket tariff stays in place and tariffs on Chinese imports are jumping to 145%. That lifts the average U.S. tariff rate to around 30% &#8211; a significant economic headwind.



Bassi sees the recent move as a tactical timeout rather than a meaningful shift. Even under the unlikely scenario of China being removed entirely from the U.S. import equation, the average tariff rate would only fall back to the 10% level.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Pause, Not A Pivot As Recession Risk Looms</h2>



The size of the tariff-induced tax hike &#8211; estimated at over 3% of GDP &#8211; keeps recession fears alive. Bassi maintains a 60% probability of a U.S. and global recession. His 40% non-recession case hinges on a reversal of the China tariff escalation and a halt to further trade tensions elsewhere.



With sentiment weak and data mixed, macro headlines are set to dominate again. The so-called "Trump put," Bassi notes, was triggered by both a sharp equity selloff and a dysfunctional Treasury market, pushing the administration to ease up.

JPMorgan has trimmed its S&amp;P 500 year-end target to 5,200, but Bassi lays out a nearly binary risk-reward path. A drawn-out trade war could drag the index toward 4,000, while a meaningful trade breakthrough &#8211; with Europe, Japan and a softened stance on China &#8211; could launch a rally toward 5,800.



Investors in the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), the iShares Core S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IVV#NYSE">IVV</a>) and the Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) should remain wary of their holdings.



In the meantime, he expects markets to remain range-bound, with any short-term bounce vulnerable to fading if not backed by real policy clarity or Fed support.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Global Hedges: China Tech, India In Focus</h2>



As U.S. risks mount, Bassi highlights select opportunities abroad. China tech remains investable, especially given the likelihood of aggressive policy support from Beijing. ETFs like the KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KWEB#NYSE">KWEB</a>) and iShares MSCI China ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MCHI#NYSE">MCHI</a>) offer exposure to that rebound theme.



India also gets a bullish nod, with potential policy tailwinds making it a compelling risk-on trade. U.S. investors may want to keep an eye on the iShares MSCI India ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INDA#NYSE">INDA</a>) as a way to diversify away from the choppy U.S. outlook.



Bassi's view is clear: the tariff pause is not a pivot. With macro risks still elevated and the market vulnerable, investors may want to hedge through global plays rather than rush back into the U.S. exceptionalism trade.

S&P 500 Could Tank To 4,000 If 'Trump Put' Fizzles, Says JPMorgan

Goldman Sachs analysts swiftly raised their earnings forecasts for top U.S. tech giants after a surprise weekend decision from the White House shielded key electronics from steep new <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44777482/trump-tariff-wars-chinas-new-rule-to-exempt-nvidia-qualcomm-and-others-from-levies-but-these-chip-companies-will-be-hit-with-125-tariffs">tariffs on Chinese imports.</a>



In a note shared Monday, analyst Michael Ng said U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued guidance late Friday clarifying that 20 tech product categories—including smartphones, servers, routers, solid-state drives and semiconductor equipment—would be exempt from the sweeping 125% tariffs imposed on Chinese goods. 



The exemptions apply retroactively to April 5 and may soften the blow for key hardware manufacturers facing escalating trade tensions.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Apple, Dell, HP Get A Reprieve</h3>



Goldman Sachs reversed recent estimate cuts on Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DELL#NYSE">DELL</a>), Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HPE#NYSE">HPE</a>) and HP Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HPQ#NYSE">HPQ</a>). 



"These adjustments largely reverse the estimate cuts we made on April 7," Ng said, tying the swing directly to the reversal in tariff policy.



Thanks to improved gross margins, Goldman now sees stronger profitability ahead for these firms.



According to the investment bank, the move is particularly favorable for smartphone, PC, server and networking equipment makers. Still, the bank stopped short of sounding the all-clear, saying that "ongoing uncertainty in trade policy and growth" continues to pose a risk to the sector.



Apple received one of the largest upgrades. Goldman lifted its 12-month target price from $242 to $259 and increased projected earnings per share for fiscal years 2025 through 2027 by 6% on average, with estimates now at $7.37, $8.27 and $9.24, respectively. The revised valuation assumes a 30-times multiple on earnings one year forward, consistent with prior models.



Shares of the Cupertino-based iPhone maker climbed 5.5% in Monday&#8217;s premarket session, nearly reversing the losses it suffered following Donald Trump&#8217;s tariff announcement on April 2. 



Dell also saw a notable earnings bump. Goldman raised its fiscal 2026 EPS forecast from $7.57 to $9.13 and reiterated a target price of $95. That reflects a 9-times multiple on forward earnings, unchanged from previous assumptions.



Dell Technologies Inc. jumped 6%, also reclaiming ground lost earlier this month.



For HP Inc., while the rating remained Neutral, Goldman increased its fiscal 2025 and 2026 EPS projections by 10% on average, now forecasting $3.48 and $3.52. The 12-month price target holds steady at $27, based on a 7.5-times forward earnings multiple.



Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. gained 4%, while HP Inc. advanced 3.7%.



The broader Technology&nbsp;Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>)&nbsp;rose 2.1% by 8:00 a.m. ET. 



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why These Products Matter</h3>



The products now exempted from tariffs make up a significant chunk of the U.S.-China tech trade.



Data from the International Trade Centre show the U.S. exported $15 billion worth of electrical goods to China in 2024, along with $8.7 billion to Hong Kong and $7.3 billion to Taiwan. Smartphone exports alone totaled $5.6 billion to Greater China.



Imports, however, dwarf those figures. Last year, the U.S. imported $159 billion of related electronics from China and its territories, including $58.9 billion worth of smartphones.



These figures underline how deeply intertwined the two economies remain—particularly in the tech supply chain. 



Before the latest White House decision, some experts estimated the price of a brand-new iPhone 16 Pro could have surged past $2,250—a jump of roughly 60%.

Goldman Sachs Cheers China Tariff Exemptions, Lifts Earnings Forecasts For Apple, Dell, HP

After a week of massive market losses tied to Team <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44698325/trump-tariff-strategy-self-inflicted-market-debacle-says-wedbush-analyst">Trump's polarizing tariff</a> policy, U.S. consumers are understandably worried.



As of April 10, the S&amp;P 500 Index was down 2.20% over the past five trading days, including a big pop of over 1,400 points on April 9 and a 9.52% gain for SPX—the index&#8217;s 10th biggest day ever.&nbsp;



That hasn't pacified investors or consumers, even as other economic markers are trending positive. Exhibit "A" is inflation, with the US consumer price index falling by 0.1% in March, the lowest monthly rating since the COVID-19 pandemic.



Yet the widely-used University of Michigan consumer sentiment February survey showed consumer confidence falling to a 29-month low, a signal that US households are struggling right now.



However, some U.S. consumer sectors have proved immune to the worst of tariff hikes.



These three US consumer brands, in particular, are well-positioned to prosper during these trade wars.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Looking For Stabilizing Consumer Stocks</h2>



"The March inflation number was nice, but don't get used to it," said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate. "The headline Consumer Price Index for March decreased – aided by lower gasoline prices &#8211; and the annual increase in the core rate posted a 4-year low of 2.8 percent, which shows how tough it has been for household budgets during that time. But consumers, businesses, and even the Federal Reserve are bracing for higher prices in the months ahead."



With everything from Buicks to Barbie Dolls rising in price during the trade wars, and even with President Trump's April 9 call to pause the tariff hikes, consumers are scrambling for cover and spending less on goods. That's bad news for consumer stocks, as the S&amp;P 500 Consumer Staples index is only up 2.21% for the year to date and down 3.27 % over the past five days.



&#8220;New loan and bond issuance has come to a halt (as have M&amp;A and IPOs), as nobody wants to go to market right now given all the uncertainty," said John Bringardner, executive editor at Debtwire. "Air freight companies, airlines, retailers importing goods from China, and Indian pharmaceutical companies are among those we&#8217;ve written recently that are trading down following the latest tariff activity."



The tariff hikes haven&#8217;t affected some US consumer sectors much, though.



"Retailers, warehouses, and consumer staples companies are good examples of some sectors that are actually holding up fine, despite the issues," said Fabio Ruggeri, founder &amp; CEO of MenthorQ, a TradeTech company that specializes in developing advanced quantitative models for active investors. "They sell essential items and are less exposed to tariff-driven price swings. That makes them more resilient in these kinds of markets."



It&#8217;s all about geography right now when tracking consumer stocks.



"While global consumer brands are navigating these increased costs, U.S.-focused sectors that have already localized their sourcing are feeling less pain and, in some cases, gaining ground as competitors are still trying to figure out what to do next," Ruggeri said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Three Stocks to Stabilize A Portfolio</h2>



In particular, these three consumer brands seem well-positioned during the trade wars.



TJX Companies (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TJX#NYSE">TJX</a>), a major retailer, is a "safe place" for investors in turbulent economic cycles. "TJX Companies is built for this kind of environment," said&nbsp; Joseph Camberato, CEO at the private lending firm National Business Capital. "They source goods from other retailers typically inside the U.S., so they don't have to pay tariffs. And when prices rise everywhere else, more shoppers start hunting for deals. Stores like these tend to do very well in these times.&#8221;



TJX shares are up 5.51% for the year.



Or consider Coca-Cola (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KO#NYSE">KO</a>). Even if Trump is on the money and tariff deals with over 50 nations can be negotiated, that process will still take a while and may lead to supply chain disruptions, a weaker dollar and potentially big layoffs, especially at China-exposed companies.



Consumer staples can carry investors through periods of massive volatility, and there are few larger consumer companies than Coca-Cola and its $304 billion market cap. The stock has been up over 13% year to date and up 1.5% over the past trading week when many stocks lost significant ground. In a recent research note, Morgan Stanley issued an overweight call on KO, citing Coke "as increasingly in a league of their own."



Coca-Cola's big advantage over consumer goods giants like PepsiCo is that it doesn't produce snack foods and thus doesn't have to worry as much over supply chain woes or consumer demand. In turbulent times, when it pays to be lean and mean, having a Coke and a smile is a tempting proposition for stranded investors, especially with KO's robust 2.88% dividend yield.



Finally, Monster Beverage (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MNST#NASDAQ">MNST</a>) is on a tear right now, with the share price up 15.6% over the past three months and up 4.9% over the past month.



The company recently reacted swiftly to an allegation from a short-selling firm of trading improprieties. Monster issued a letter aggressively denying the charges, saying the document was "released by a self-interested activist short seller is filled with and based on inaccuracies and aspersions that appear to be designed to distort the Company's record and share price for its own gain." The response seemed to calm shareholder anxieties and signaled that the company management would quickly tamp down any potential negative news.



Analysts are bullish on the stock, with Citi's Filipo Falorni reaffirming a buy rating on MNST with a one-year price target of $64.00 (the stock is currently trading at $57 per share.



Morgan Stanley followed suit, with an overweight call on the stock, "driven by a resurgence in US sales behind rebounding category growth (gas/convenience recovery), the positive impact of price increases, sequential MNST US market share improvement with building innovation, and easier comparisons," the firm noted in a recent research note.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Be Prepared</h2>



Choosing any stock in harsh market climates is a tall task, and that's where reasonable due diligence can save the day.



&#8220;If you're eyeing consumer stocks, do your homework," Camberato advised. "Figure out where the company sources its products. If the company is sourcing from China, that's a red flag. Even if the company is big enough to dictate terms, it&#8217;s most likely still going to have a tough time."



High-yield bonds are a decent place to park money if you&#8217;re more conservative. "Just don't assume cash is safe," Camberato added. "Cash is more dangerous than anything due to inflation. Volatility spooks people, but knee-jerk reactions kill long-term gains.&#8221;

3 Big Brand Stocks To Lean On During Tariff Troubles

U.S. stock futures rose on Monday following Friday&#8217;s advances. Futures of major benchmark indices were higher in premarket.



President Donald Trump on Friday temporarily <a href="https://benzinga.com/25/04/44778464/trump-administration-grants-tariff-reprieve-to-tech-industry-apple-and-nvidia-among-beneficiaries">exempted smartphones, computers, and chips</a> from new U.S. reciprocal tariffs, despite a 20% tariff remaining on all Chinese goods, reversing part of a recently imposed 145% tariff.



However, the Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated these <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/market-summary/25/04/44783093/mark-cuban-examines-trumps-tariff-exemptions-rationale-on-electronics-thats-billions-of-revenue-for-the-usa">electronics exemptions are temporary</a>, and further tariffs could follow soon. Investors also assessed the upbeat bank earnings and cooler-than-expected inflation data.



The 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.46% and the two-year bond was at 3.92%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool&#8217;s </a>projections show markets pricing a 79.3% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its May meeting.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, rose in premarket on Monday. The SPY was up 1.47% to $541.71, while the QQQ advanced 1.75% to $462.35, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data.



Cues From Last Session:



U.S. stocks finished Friday&#8217;s session higher, fuelled by robust bank earnings from JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MS#NYSE">MS</a>), alongside surprisingly cooler producer inflation data up 2.7% year-on-year in March, down by 0.4% monthly.



All S&amp;P 500 sectors saw gains, with energy, information technology, and materials stocks leading the advance.



The positive sentiment resulted in significant weekly gains for the major averages: the S&amp;P 500 rose 5.7%, its best week since November 2023, the Nasdaq surged 7.3%, its best week since November 2022, and the Dow climbed approximately 5%.



The Dow Jones index climbed 619 points or 1.56% to 40,212.71, whereas the S&amp;P 500 index advanced 1.81% to 5,363.36. Nasdaq Composite rose to end 2.06% higher at 16,724.46, and the small-cap gauge, Russell 2000, jumped 1.57% to 1,860.20.

Insights From Analysts:



According to Louis Navellier of Navellier &amp; Associates, given the severe selling in the stock market and high trading volume, &#8220;it appears that much of the selling pressure is starting to be exhausted.&#8221;



&#8220;There is no doubt that there will be ripple effects from the Trump Administration's trade war with China. It is imperative that the velocity of money picks up if news breaks on tariffs diminishing and/or the Fed cutting key interest rates,&#8221; he added.



Amid the growing trade tensions between the U.S. and China, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>) cut its targets for key Chinese stock indexes for a second time this month.



According <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-04-14/goldman-sachs-cuts-targets-for-china-stocks-second-time-in-april#:~:text=The%20Goldman%20team%20trimmed%20its,to%20soften%20the%20trade%20shock.">to</a> Bloomberg, "U.S.-China trade tensions have soared to unprecedented levels, prompting concerns about global recession, and decoupling risks between the two largest economies globally in other strategic cohorts, notably capital markets, technology, and geopolitics," a team led by Kinger Lau wrote in a note Monday. 



Analysts reduced 12-month price targets for the MSCI China Index to 75 from 81 and the CSI 300 Index to 4,300 from 4,500 points, suggesting potential gains of 12% and 15% respectively based on Friday&#8217;s closing prices.



Meanwhile, Wedbush Securities&#8217; Dan Ives described the exclusion of smartphones and chips from China tariffs as the &#8220;dream scenario&#8221; for tech investors, stating that it&#8217;s a &#8220;game changer.&#8221;

US Stocks Likely To Open Higher: Expert Says 'The Selling Pressure Is Starting To Be Exhausted'

On Friday, April 11, U.S. markets closed higher, with all three major indexes posting strong gains, fueled by upbeat bank earnings and reassuring comments from Federal Reserve officials. The S&amp;P 500 and Dow recorded their largest weekly percentage gains since November 2023, while the Nasdaq notched its best week since November 2022.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), and Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter (currently X) as well as Square, now called Block Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XYZ#NYSE">XYZ</a>), have ignited a debate over intellectual property rights. The tech magnates have suggested a complete eradication of IP laws, a move that has stirred controversy in the tech industry.



What Happened: Dorsey initiated the discussion with a post on X stating, &#8220;delete all IP law.&#8221; Musk, who now owns X (formerly Twitter), promptly agreed with Dorsey&#8217;s sentiment. The discussion comes amid ongoing lawsuits faced by AI companies, including OpenAI, co-founded by Musk, over alleged copyright violations.

Why It Matters: The exchange of views between the tech innovators comes at a time when Meta Platforms&#8216; (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) Llama AI models have been caught in a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44452879/meta-profits-from-llama-ai-models-despite-denials-court-filing-reveals">copyright lawsuit</a> over the use of pirated e-books for training. 



Dorsey&#8217;s and Musk&#8217;s recent comments are in line with their long-held views on intellectual property rights. Dorsey has been a vocal critic of IP laws, viewing them as barriers to innovation. In his subsequent posts under the current one, he argued that the current IP system restricts creativity and unfairly benefits gatekeepers at the expense of creators.&nbsp;



There are "much greater models to pay creators" while claiming "the current ones take way too much from them and only rent-seek,&#8221; posted Dorsey.
