Trade tensions between the United States and Canada are <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44281882/canada-retaliates-with-20b-in-tariffs-on-us-goods-amid-trade-war">heating up</a> again, with President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44212152/mark-carney-takes-justin-trudeaus-job-as-canadas-new-pm-ready-to-face-trumps-tariff-threats-i-know-how-to-manage-crises">claiming that Canada</a> has been &#8220;ripping us off for years&#8221; with a 250% tariff on U.S. dairy products. But is this really the case? While the claim has some truth to it, the full picture is more complicated. Here&#8217;s what you need to know.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Canada's Dairy Tariffs Explained</h2>
Canada does impose high tariffs—sometimes as high as 298.5%—on U.S. dairy products. However, these tariffs do not apply across the board. According to fact-checking site <a href="https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-canada-dairy-products-tariffs/">Snopes</a>, these rates only kick in when U.S. dairy exports exceed the quotas set under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement in 2020.

Becky Rasdall Vargas, senior vice president of trade and workforce policy at the International Dairy Foods Association, clarified the issue, <a href="https://www.idfa.org/news/idfa-statement-on-potential-u-s-tariff-on-canadian-dairy-products">stating</a>: &#8220;It is accurate that Canada imposes a tariff of approximately 250% on U.S. exports of certain dairy products into Canada. However, that tariff would only apply if we were able to reach and exceed the quota on U.S. dairy exports agreed to under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.&#8221;
So far, these quotas have never been exceeded, meaning that the higher tariff rates have not actually been applied.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Trump's Trade Moves and Canada's Response</h2>
Trump has prioritized trade throughout his presidency, and his most recent moves are consistent with that position. In March, he imposed a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, though some of these tariffs were delayed until April 2. He also announced an <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44253100/trump-slaps-50-tariff-on-canadian-steel-aluminum-threatens-auto-industry">additional 50% tariff</a> on Canadian steel and aluminum.

In response, Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng called Trump's potential dairy tariffs <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/politics/25/03/44206362/canada-claps-back-at-unjustified-trump-tariffs-on-dairy-lumber">&#8220;completely unjustified&#8221;</a> and emphasized that Canada has been working to remove existing U.S. tariffs. She also defended Canada's dairy system, which is structured to protect domestic farmers through a supply-management model. This system limits imports through tariff rate quotas, allowing a certain amount of dairy to enter the country at little to no tariff before higher tariffs take effect.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Trade Wars and Economic Concerns</h2>
Trump&#8217;s tariff plans have raised fears about the economy more broadly than just dairy.&nbsp; Trade disputes, especially those involving lumber, have long existed between the United States and Canada. American lumber producers argue that Canada's system effectively subsidizes its industry, leading to U.S. duties on Canadian lumber ranging from 11.5% to 17.3%.

Economists warn that increased tariffs could have unintended consequences. Nobel laureate Paul Krugman <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/17/opinion/trump-tariffs-economy.html">criticized</a> Trump's trade strategy, arguing that tariffs could &#8220;shrink our economy&#8221; by making it less efficient and more costly. He added, &#8220;The effect would be to make the economy less efficient and poorer.&#8221;
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What's Next?</h2>
The effects on both economies are still unknown as trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada continue to rise. Bo Hines, the Presidential Working Group on Digital Assets lead, shared with attendees of a confidential meeting hosted by the Bitcoin Policy Institute on Tuesday the government's intent to gather substantial Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) stocks, <a href="https://decrypt.co/309948/trump-admin-acquire-much-bitcoin-possible-white-house">according </a>to those present.
The session, following a public "Bitcoin for America" gathering, included key industry figures such as Michael Saylor of Strategy (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSTR#NASDAQ">MSTR</a>), Fred Thiel of Marathon Digital (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MARA#NASDAQ">MARA</a>), Nathan McCauley of Anchorage Digital, and David Bailey of Bitcoin Magazine, alongside senators Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tn.) and Bernie Moreno (R-Oh.).
When pressed on the specific amount the government might target, Hines responded with a lighthearted comparison to asking someone how many dollars they'd like, one participant relayed to Decrypt. 
A White House source later verified Hines' statement, noting that any Bitcoin purchases would be conducted without burdening taxpayers, aligning with a cost-neutral policy. 
This approach supports recent statements from senior officials advocating for additional Bitcoin acquisitions—currently around 200,000 BTC from legal confiscations—to enhance a strategic reserve established by Trump's recent directive.

During the discussion, a question arose about the administration's stance on the Bitcoin Act, a Senate proposal reintroduced by Lummis on Tuesday, which calls for acquiring up to one million BTC, valued at about $80 billion, and legally embedding the reserve. 
Hines reportedly turned to Lummis, seated nearby, and indicated the administration favors legislation to solidify the reserve and will work to ensure its approval in Congress. 
However, a White House representative clarified to Decrypt that Hines did not back any specific bill during the event. 
The proposal's cost-neutral claim is under debate, as it suggests using Federal Reserve funds from revaluing gold certificates—last updated in 1971 and now worth over 6,800% more due to gold's rise—to finance the purchases.

As of December 31, 2024, the company had 502 retail stores covering 150 cities, 478 servicing centers,&nbsp;Li Auto-authorized body and paint shops operating in 225 cities, and 1,727&nbsp;supercharging&nbsp;stations with 9,100 charging stalls.
Chair and CEO Xiang Li noted the fourth quarter propelled its full-year deliveries to surpass the 500,000 milestone, making it a leading premium automotive brand in China. Looking ahead to 2025, it plans to launch its next-generation autonomous driving architecture and new BEV models.

On March 7, NANO Nuclear Energy announced that Florent Heidet, Ph.D. has joined NANO Nuclear as its Chief Technology Officer and Head of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/NNE/news">Reactor Development</a>.
Cramer said Illumina, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ILMN#NASDAQ">ILMN</a>) is a &#8220;challenged&#8221; company, and he doesn't really care for it.
RBC Capital analyst Conor McNamara, on March 12, maintained Illumina with an Outperform and lowered the price target from $247 to $128.
When asked about Archer Aviation Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ACHR#NYSE">ACHR</a>), he said, &#8220;Keep looking but do not press the button.&#8221;
As per the recent news, Archer Aviation and Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>), on March 13, collaborated to build the AI foundation for the future of advanced aviation technologies.
The Mad Money host said he has always liked STERIS plc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STE#NYSE">STE</a>) and recommended buying the stock. &#8220;I think it's just a strong company,&#8221; he added.
Supporting his view, Stephens &amp; Co. analyst Jacob Johnson, on Feb. 6, reiterated Steris with an Overweight rating and maintained a $240 price target.
Cramer said he doesn't know what Sixth Street Specialty Lending, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLX#NYSE">TSLX</a>) really owns, so therefore he can't give his opinion on it.
RBC Capital analyst Kenneth Lee, on Feb. 26, maintained Sixth Street Specialty with an Outperform rating and raised the price target from $23 to $25.
Cramer said he likes Lam Research Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LRCX#NASDAQ">LRCX</a>) very much and recommended to own the stock.
Adding support to his choice, Susquehanna analyst Mehdi Hosseini, on Feb. 20, upgraded Lam Research from Neutral to Positive and raised the price target from $75 to $125.
Arista Networks Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ANET#NYSE">ANET</a>) has been an &#8220;amazing stock for many years,&#8221; Cramer said. He recommended buying the stock.
Supporting his view, UBS analyst David Vogt, on March 5, upgraded Arista Networks from Neutral to Buy and raised the price target from $112 to $115.
