One of the most important charts that any trade can follow is the chart of the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield. When yields move higher it means that bond prices move lower. So if you are following an equity like the iShares Barclays 7-10 Year Treasury Bond Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ief#NYSE">IEF</a>), or the iShares Barclays 20+ Yr Treasury Bond (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tlt#NYSE">TLT</a>) you should realize that yields will move inversely to these equities. When bond yields move higher it will usually have a negative effect on the interest rate sensitive sectors such as utilities, REITS, home-builder stocks, and many consumer staples.&nbsp; 
	 
	Today, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury bond surged above 2.4 percent. This looks to be a breakout move on the yields today. Please understand, the yields are now extended and may pullback in the near term, but any consolidation on the yield chart should signal further upside. It would not be surprising to see another 50 basis point move in the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury Note. Some ETF&#39;s that will trade higher with bond yields include the ProShares UltraShort 7-10 Year Treasury (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pst#NYSE">PST</a>), and the ProShares UltraShort 20+ Year Treasury (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tbt#NYSE">TBT</a>).&nbsp;

Bond Yields Seal The Deal

The United States Congress moved closer to passing a bill that would punish countries that the United States accuses of keeping their currencies artificially low. The law is clearly aimed at China, which has long been accused of manipulating its currency in order to make its exports more competitive pricewise. China's critics claim that China's artificially low yuan has cost America millions of jobs.

China's reaction to the proposed US law has been furious, with some leading Chinese saying that such a move by the United States could spark a trade war between the world's two most important economies. The Chinese say that instead of blaming China for its economic problems, the United States needs to address its own structural problems. The Chinese have criticized the United States over its low savings rate, dependence on debt and hi-tech export controls.

The export controls are of particular interest to the Chinese who say that they are to blame for much of the trade imbalance between the United States and China. However, it's more likely that the Chinese want more access to American technology than they are concerned over the size of the two countries' trade gap.

If the United States Congress passes a bill to penalize China for currency manipulation, it could have negative effects for the United States, China and the world economy. The two countries' economies are so intertwined now that neither might benefit from a trade war. If a trade war erupted between China and the United states, owners of the ProShares UltraShort S&amp;P500 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sds#NYSE">SDS</a>) and Direxion Daily China Bear 3x Shares (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/czi#NYSE">CZI</a>) ETFs could profit. A trade war between the United States and China is unlikely to have a winner, so investors who shorted American or Chinese stocks could benefit from the falling stock prices caused by a major dispute between China and the United States.

China could retaliate to any penalties imposed upon it by selling off some of its holdings of US government debt. If China began liquidating even a fraction of its US bonds, it could devastate bond prices. Investors who anticipated such a move and bought the ProShares UltraShort 20+ Year Treasury (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tbt#NYSE">TBT</a>) or the ProShares UltraShort 7-10 Year Treasury (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pst#NYSE">PST</a>) ETFs could see their investments climb higher.

The US dollar wouldn't fare well in such a scenario, so ETFs like the PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bearish (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/udn#NYSE">UDN</a>), the CurrencyShares Swiss Franc Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fxf#NYSE">FXF</a>) and the CurrencyShares Japanese Yen Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fxy#NYSE">FXY</a>) would see their share prices move higher.

Some investors might actually feel that a trade dispute between the United States and China would be in America's favor. With more dollars being invested and spent in the United States, the American economy could receive a much needed boost. If this were to occur, the SPDR S&amp;P 500 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/spy#NYSE">SPY</a>) and the iShares Russell 2000 Index (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/iwm#NYSE">IWM</a>) ETFs could see significant long term growth.

Companies like Google (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/goog#Nasdaq">GOOG</a>) that have suffered because of their rocky relationships with the Chinese government could also benefit because competitors like Microsoft (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/msft#Nasdaq">MSFT</a>) and Yahoo! (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/yhoo#Nasdaq">YHOO</a>) would have less of an advantage in China if American companies were less welcome there.

Other investors might believe that because each side has too much to lose, a trade war between China and the United States is highly unlikely. American consumers and businesses have come to depend on China for low priced goods, while much of China's stellar economic growth has been fueled by American dollars. These investors might feel that neither side has much to gain and too much to lose for an actual trade war to happen.

How to Profit From Talk of Trade War Between America and China

Over the past week or so, United States Treasury Bonds put in a major reversal. I've been waiting for this type of movement in Treasuries for the last few years. I've recommended shorting Treasuries several times over the last year. And I believe this one single trade could be one of the most profitable investments you can make over the next 5 years or longer.
It's one of the most important trends in the market, and like all big trends, it should be obvious and clear to anyone paying attention: the US Treasury market is in one of the biggest bubbles in the history of the world.
Waiting for Treasuries to crash has been like waiting for the world's largest ship to come into port. Even when you can see it getting close, it could still be very far away. 
So even though five year Treasury yields just experienced their biggest gains in over 20 years, it could still be some time before our ship truly comes in.

For a re-cap on bonds - when the yield rises, the price necessarily falls. You can see this phenomena in action in the chart below which shows both the 30 year Treasury price (in blue) AND the 30 Year Treasury yield (in red).

In order to profit from the eventual and inevitable crash of Treasuries, you can buy a few different investments.
There are a variety of ETFs that go short (or double/triple) short Treasury bonds of different maturities.
One is the ProShares UltraShort 7-10 Year Treasury (NYSE: PST). This ETF is a double-leveraged play that shorts Treasuries with maturities between 7 and 10 years out. 
The idea is that for every 1% that Treasuries fall, this ETF should gain 2%. 
Another ETF you might want to look at is the ProShares UltraShort 20+ Year Treasury (NYSE: TBT).
It's the same basic idea as the 7-10 year fund - but it focuses on Treasuries maturing 20+ years out. 
I'm not an expert on bond trading, but my instinct is to focus on longer term bonds as a shorting target, just because the Federal Reserve has shown a preference to prop up short term bonds. Longer term bonds will necessarily have to rise much higher than shorter term bonds. 
Whenever you buy one of these ETFs - or any mutual fund or money market product, you should first seek out not the price or how you can buy it, but you should FIRST look at the expense ratio. For the two aforementioned ETFs, you'll pay 0.95% annually. That's regardless of whether you make money or lose money, and you'll be dinged that amount every year. 0.95% isn't that bad for an ETF, but it's not great either. 
I think you'll make far more than 0.95% on average over the next 5-10 years, but it's still something you should be aware of.
After all, an investment could yield 100% but if you're paying 98% in expenses - it's not really worth getting excited about.
Okay, so if you're interested in owning those ETFs, I don't think you can go wrong over the coming years. But there are some other concerns, and unfortunately, they're the very same concerns that plague the US dollar as an asset in the first place.
I'm talking about having the US Government as a counterparty. Treasuries are a huge liability for the US Government, and in case you haven't been paying attention to the news over the past few years, the Government does not play fair when it comes to liabilities.
They've already changed the rules when it comes to corporate bondholders in the case of General Motors (NYSE: GM). If you don't remember, the United States Government actually let the United Auto Workers union to jump in front of senior bondholders when GM was about to go bankrupt.
So if and when it's politically expedient to do so, there's no stopping the Feds from changing the rules to suit their own needs. Going short Treasuries with these ETFs puts your money at political risk. And that's something you need to be aware of when you buy them - just as you need to be aware of the expense ratio.
I don't know how you can quantify that risk, because we're in uncharted territory and the fall of US Treasuries is likely to push the Government to do all kinds of wacky things. Like a gigantic beached whale desperately thrashing in an effort to get back to the ocean, it's best to just leave it alone altogether. There's a risk in trying to get your lump of flesh from the gasping beast, and there's no way to know what that risk might be.
That's why I continually, constantly advise you and everyone else I meet to own physical gold and silver.
I can't say what will happen to ultra-short Treasury ETFs, but if you own gold, and you keep it close and safe, you have no counterparty risk. The Government can't simply decide to change the rules on precious metals in the same way it can about it's massive paper liabilities. 
Tomorrow, the Government might proclaim that it will no longer fund its debts. They can't say that about precious metals.

Treasury Bonds: The Worst Commodity (PST, TBT, GM)

The Bank for International Settlements, or BIS, warned in its annual report that "highly accommodative monetary policies are fast becoming a threat to price stability" and that central banks will need to raise interest rates in order to keep inflation rates from rising too high and to prevent a real estate crash in emerging markets.

After the recent global financial crisis, central banks cut interest rates in an effort to promote growth but according to the Bank for International Settlements' report, the lower cost of borrowing has led to serious financial market distortions.

The report goes on to say that the situation is especially critical in the developing world, where cheap credit has led to rising levels of private sector debt, as well as rapidly rising property levels.

One major concern is that this may lead to a real estate bubble in emerging economies much like the one that hit many developed nations and led to the financial crisis.

Many emerging markets have already taken steps to fight inflation as rising food costs have become major concerns for the governments of countries like China.

The BIS report states, "With interest rates rising in emerging markets and at or close to record lows in advanced economies, investors shifted their portfolios towards the assets with higher returns. They did that in part by increasing their carry trade positions in emerging market fixed income instruments. Funded at very low interest rates in currencies such as the US dollar and Swiss franc, these positions are bets that the high interest rate differential will more than compensate for possible countervailing moves in exchange rates."

The report went on to say, "The shift of funding has two potentially damaging effects. First, by exerting upward pressure on exchange rates in the emerging market economies receiving the capital flows, it makes their exports less competitive and puts a brake on their growth. For economies that are overheating, this currency appreciation is part of the natural equilibrating process. Second, large gross cross-border financial flows can fuel unsustainable credit expansions and asset price booms. What begins as a response to strong fundamentals can become a serious threat to financial stability."

Emerging markets have taken a number of measures in an attempt to slow this currency appreciation, including increasing foreign reserves and adding or increasing taxes on foreigners trading in emerging market currency markets.

However, the actions taken by the emerging markets' authorities may not be enough and BIS recommends that central bankers in the developed world raise interest rates in order to remove the imbalances.

For the moment, central bankers in most of the developed world seem to be more focused on encouraging growth then warding off inflation but the report from the Bank for International Settlements might be a warning that the priorities of central banks could change in the near future.

There are a number of ways to profit once interest rates start to climb back up.

If the interest rates in developed economies begin to rise, there will be less incentive for investors to put their money in developing market currencies. If this happens, ETFs like the PowerShares DB US Dollar Index (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/uup#NYSE">UUP</a>) should climb higher as the dollar becomes a more attractive currency.

The ProShares UltraShort 7-10 Year Treasury (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pst#NYSE">PST</a>) is one investment that will respond positively to any increase in interest rates. Once interest rates begin to rise, this ETF will climb quickly but holding on to this ETF long term would be a very risky investment.

Investors who like the regular income of bonds but are concerned that rising interest rates could soon hurt their portfolios may want to consider the iShares Barclays TIPS Bond Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tip#NYSE">TIP</a>). This is a bond fund with protection against rising inflation rates, so it should appeal to investors who want income and stability.

Central Banks May Raise Interest Rates: How to Profit (UUP, PST, TIP)

On Wednesday, the Federal Open Market Committee concluded its two-day meeting on U.S. monetary policy.

Following the meeting, the Fed released a statement outlining its assessment of the economy.

In the statement, the Fed described the pace of the economic recovery as being weaker than anticipated. The Fed cited “temporary factors” as reasons for the delayed pace of recovery.

The Fed acknowledged that inflation had “picked up,” but stated that long-term expectations were “stable.”

So what can traders do with the Fed's statement?

Not much.

The Fed was, for the most part, relatively ambiguous, and gave the market little information it did not already know.

The Fed will maintain a policy of low interest rates for the time being, but did not announce a plan of additional quantitative easing, nor did it outline a policy of reigning in liquidity.

Traders may be able to learn more at 2:15 pm, when the Fed's Chairman <a href="%E2%80%9D">Ben Bernanke</a> will hold a press conference.

Action Items

Bullish: Traders who believe that the Fed will rollout a third round of quantitative easing in the near-term might want to consider the following trades: 

<ul><li>Buy iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/slv#NYSE">SLV</a>) in a long play on silver. April's silver mania seems to have subsided, and traders may wish to move back into the precious metal before QE3 is announced.</li><li>Buy iShares Lehman Aggregate Bond (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/agg#NYSE">AGG</a>) in a short play on government bonds. If the Fed buys more bonds, yields may stay low, and AGG may do well.</li></ul>

Bearish: Traders who believe that inflation will prevent the Fed from intervening anytime soon may consider taking positions in the following: 

<ul><li>PowerShares DB US Dollar Bullish Index (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/uup#NYSE">UUP</a>) is a long play on the U.S. dollar. If the Fed hints at any tightening, the dollar may rally and UUP might do well.</li><li>ProShares UltraShort 7-10 Year Treasury (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pst#NYSE">PST</a>) is a short play on U.S. bonds. If the Fed stops driving the bond market, PST may rally.</li></ul>

 Bernanke Declines to Give Forex Traders Any Info They Did Not Already Have

	With all of the reckless government spending, many are becoming concerned about the potential devastating effects of inflation. Significant inflation is not only feasible, it is very likely. We are seeing the warning signs with food and energy prices!&nbsp; I wanted to take a few moments to update you on what is going on in the economy, how inflation can be dangerous, and provide several investment ideas that will help us fight inflation in the upcoming days.

	&nbsp;

	Why is inflation inevitable?

	With Democrats and Republicans alike agreeing U.S. debbts are out of control, but no one has a plan to solve our current deficit let alone the whopping debts we have.&nbsp; The Fed has the solution: print more money, devalue the dollar, and pay back the debts with cheaper dollars.&nbsp; What&#39;s the price tag?&nbsp; Can you say H-Y-P-E-R Inflation! This will mean we will see massive inflation like never before.&nbsp; This double digit inflation is imminent unless the Fed and/or U.S. Government takes one of two drastic measures:

	&nbsp;

	We really only have two ways to pay for our debts:

	(1) Print more money, which causes inflation, and/or

	(2) Hike taxes, which kills investment, businesses and jobs.

	&nbsp;

	Why is inflation dangerous?

	Inflation simply means rising prices. But in addition to retail price inflation measured by the Consumer Price Index, you also have monetary inflation - the growth of the money supply, or the total amount of money in the economy. (Our money supply includes dollars, checking and savings accounts, CDs and money market funds, and short-term transfers of securities in exchange for cash.)

	&nbsp;

	Here is the great balancing act of the Federal Reserve. If it eases the money supply (think lower interest rates), borrowing costs decrease, and investment generally increases. But with easy money, price inflation and currency devaluation follow. The Fed can fight inflation by raising rates to effectively tighten the money supply, but they CANNOT afford to raise rates as the US would be unable to service her debts!

	&nbsp;

	Is the Fed helping or harming the economy?

	My opinion is the Fed is destroying the dollar and America&#39;s near-term future in the process. We must realize that market intervention is magnifying, not solving the problems that caused the crisis! The Fed&#39;s actions have only delayed and worsened the original financial problems!

	&nbsp;

	What do you do in the meantime?

	There are many ways to protect you and your family from the potentially dangerous effects of inflation. Hard times for America do not necessarily mean hard times have to come for you. No matter what the economy is doing, no matter what the state of financial markets are there is always a strategy available that can make you money. The key is to recognize opportunities wherever they may be and, more importantly, detach from old investment strategies that are no longer working.

	&nbsp;

Inflation finally hit home a few days ago. There I was, counting out change for the soda machine in my company's break room. Three quarters — 75 cents — is what a Diet Coke has cost for who knows how long.
But when I pressed the button, what appeared in the electronic display? “$1.00.” In other words, the cost of a can of soda just jumped 25 percent. Sigh.
Import Prices, Producer 
 Prices Climbing Fast!
It's not like my can of soda is the only example, either. I'm paying more for groceries, gas, and all kinds of other things — and I'm sure you are too!
Indeed, the cost of imported goods overall surged 1.5 percent in January. That was almost double the 0.8 percent rise economists were expecting, and a more-than-5 percent jump from a year earlier. Even if you take out food and fuel, you see that “core” imports jumped 0.6 percent in price.
Or how about producer prices? 
Wholesale costs shot up 0.8 percent between December and January after rising 0.9 percent a month earlier. They're up 3.6 percent from a year earlier. Again, even if you buy the asinine argument that we should strip out food and gas, you get a 0.5 percent rise in “core” producer prices. 
That's the biggest rise in any month since October 2008. Further up the food chain, if you'll pardon the pun, intermediate goods prices surged 6 percent from a year earlier. Crude goods jumped an even-greater 10 percent. Every company from PepsiCo and McDonald's to Illinois Tool Works and Whirlpool is raising prices to compensate for surging input costs. 
So it should be no surprise that consumer prices are on the move too! They surged 0.4 percent in January after rising by an equivalent amount in December. Even the “core” figures rose 0.2 percent, the biggest rise in 15 months. 
Does a trend get any clearer than this? I sure don't think so! 
Heck, the United Nations and World Bank are warning of food riots in several emerging markets. We've also seen Middle Eastern governments in Tunisia and Egypt topple, in part because of high costs that average citizens can't stomach.
Bernanke Clinging to His 
 Inflation Fantasy, But …

Of course, ivory tower economists like Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke continue to cling to their inflation fantasies. When he testified before Congress several days ago, Bernanke said “overall inflation is still quite low and longer-term inflation expectations have remained stable.” 
He added that commodity prices surges don't concern him one bit. That's the same message coming from other Fed “doves,” as <a href="http://www.moneyandmarkets.com/dissention-in-the-feds-ranks-what-it-means-42680">I outlined last week</a>.
But again, the markets aren't buying what the Fed is selling. 
Remember how I said the yield curve might flatten as expectations for future Fed rate hikes increase? That's precisely what has been happening for a few days now, and I expect that trend to continue. We'll probably see ALL interest rates rise, but short-term rates rise more on a relative basis.
For investors, that means you should stay “short” long-term Treasuries — or at least avoid owning them! You could also consider an inverse bond ETF that targets intermediate-term Treasuries, like the ProShares UltraShort 7-10 Year Treasury (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/pst#">PST</a>). It's designed to rise 2 percent in value for every 1 percent decline in the price of Treasuries with remaining maturities ranging seven to ten years.

Bottom line? “Fighting the Fed” by selling bonds rather than buying them during the QE2 program has been extremely profitable. I don't expect that to change anytime soon — because Bernanke's beliefs don't jibe with what you and I are seeing and experiencing every single day!

Inflation everywhere … including my break room!

Today has really been the first trading day since Ben Bernanke and the Federal Reserve Bank announced their quantitative easing program that two different people inside the central bank have spoke out against it. The central bank has pledged to buy $600 billion in U.S. Treasuries into the June 2011 time period. When Ben Bernanke announced the U.S. Treasury purchase program in late August the stock markets began to soar higher and have been rallying since that time. Copper, cotton, coffee, and many other commodities have sky rocketed to new highs since that time.
Even today the iPath Dow Jones-UBS Copper Subindex Total Return ETN(NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/jjc#NYSE">JJC</a>) remains at all time highs. This move by the Federal Reserve Bank has caused the stock markets to inflate sharply higher. On the flip side the program by the Fed has also caused severe inflation around the globe because everything in the commodity sector is denominated in U.S. Dollars.
As we have all seen in the media recently, there have been riots and protests popping up in various countries around the world. Bond yields have soared higher over the past week and this has occurred despite the Federal Reserve Bank trying to keep yields artificially low. When yields climb higher it is telling the world that the central bank is behind the inflation curve. Higher yields in U.S. Treasuries tell us that there is inflation everywhere. Look at the ProShares UltraShort 20+ Year Treasury ETF(NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tbt#NYSE">TBT</a>), or the ProShares UltraShort 7-10 Year Treasury ETF(Public, NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pst#Public, NYSE">PST</a>) over the past couple months. These short U.S. Treasuries ETF's have surged higher. This is what happens when the central bank continues to inflate the markets artificially.
Countries such as China, India, Brazil, Thailand, and other emerging market nations have all began raising interest rates in order to fight inflation. Just take a look at a chart of the iShares FTSE/Xinhua China 25 Index ETF(NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fxi#NYSE">FXI</a>) as it has been declining since early November 2010. Inflation is everywhere and the Federal Reserve Bank better be careful for what they wish for.

Yields in the 10 and 30 year T-Notes are climbing higher today. The yield in the 10 year T-Note is higher by 0.07 to 3.41%. The 30 year T-Note is climbing higher by 0.06 to 4.58%. When yields climb on these bonds traders can look to buy the ProShares UltraShort 20+ Year Treasury ETF(NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tbt#NYSE">TBT</a>), or theProShares UltraShort 7-10 Year Treasury ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pst#NYSE">PST</a>). These ETF's will rally with higher yields.
When yields decline or trade lower on the 30 year T-Note traders can look to buy the iShares Barclays 20+ Yr Treasury Bond ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tlt#NYSE">TLT</a>).

Yields Jump In The 10 And 30 Year T-Notes 

I have written recently about the ETF Scorecard at Alert HQ Premium (the free preview is still available, so check it out). This report ranks over 300 ETFs according to how strong their trends are. To complete the ETF picture, I have created two reports that shows how the rankings have changed week-over-week. I offer you the <a href="http://trade-radar.com/AlertHQ/etftrendperformance.html">ETF Trend Performance report</a> and the <a href="http://trade-radar.com/AlertHQ/etfpriceperformance.html">ETF Price Performance report</a>.
Let's take a look at the ETF Trend Performance report. The ETF with the worst performance this past week is the iShares Lehman 20 Year Treasury Bond Fund (TLT). This ETF's ranking fell by 3 points. Given that the maximum score is only 6 points, this was a significant drop, indeed.
Also at the bottom of the performance rankings this week there is the Vanguard Long-Term Government Bond ETF (VGLT), score down by 2.75 points, and the Vanguard Long-Term Corporate Bond ETF (VCLT)  and iShares GS iBoxx Investment Grade Corporate Bond Fund (LQD), both down 2.5 points. 
Looking at the ETF Price Performance report, the bond funds weren't quite the worst performers based on the percent change in price this week but they were certainly down there in the lower end of the report.
One of the better performers this week was the ProShares UltraShort Lehman 20+ Year Treasury (TBT) which was up over 7% over the course of this last week.
Conclusion --
There has been a significant change in trend in the bond ETFs. With the filtering on the trend indicators and the moving averages, the fact that the scores changed so drastically in one week suggest that we have an abrupt reversal in progress.
If this bond rally was actually a bubble and that bubble has burst, TBT could sure be the way to go. And you might also want to take a look at the ProShares UltraShort Lehman 7-10 Year Treasury (PST). Both of these ETFs

There are a lot of investments you can put in your portfolio to safeguard it from runaway inflation and higher rates. You probably don't want your whole portfolio in catastrophe protection investments, but it's a good idea to have a little to give your overall portfolio some protection. Here are some suggestions.
TIPS
Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, also known as TIPS, provide protection against inflation. The principal of a TIPS increases with inflation and decreases with deflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index. When a TIPS bond matures, you are paid the adjusted principal or original principal, whichever is greater. TIPS pay interest twice a year, at a fixed rate. The rate is applied to the adjusted principal; so, like the principal, interest payments rise with inflation and fall with deflation. You can buy TIPS from the U. S. Government at TreasuryDirect and Legacy Treasury Direct through non-competitive bidding. TreasuryDirect permits accounts for both individuals and various types of entities including trusts, estates, corporations, and partnerships.
I Bonds
I Bonds are a low-risk, liquid savings product. While you own them they earn a variable interest rate based on inflation, thereby providing some protection from inflation. You may purchase I Bonds via TreasuryDirect, at most local financial institutions or through payroll deduction. As a TreasuryDirect account holder, you can purchase, manage, and redeem I Bonds directly at the government's web site.
Bearish Treasury ETFs
When interests rates go up, bonds drop in value in order to compensate new buyers of bonds for higher rates. The bearish treasury ETFs drop when bonds rise in price and go up when bonds tank. So they are a great way to play higher interest rates. Here are a few worth looking at.
ProShares Short 20+ Year Treasury (TBF) seeks daily investment results that correspond to the inverse or opposite of the daily performance of the Barclays Capital 20+ Year U.S. Treasury Bond Index by investing in derivatives that should have similar daily performance characteristics as the inverse of the daily return of the Index.
ProShares UltraShort 20+ Year Treasury (TBT) has a goal of achieving returns that correspond to twice the inverse of the daily performance of the Barclays Capital 20+ Year U.S. Treasury Bond index by investing in derivatives that should have similar daily return characteristics as twice the inverse of the daily performance of the Index.
ProShares UltraShort 7-10 Year Treasury (PST) attempts to achieve daily investment results which correspond to twice the inverse of the daily performance of the Barclays Capital 7-10 Year U.S. Treasury index from derivatives that should have similar daily return characteristics as twice the inverse of the daily performance of the Index.
Gold and Silver ETFs
There are plenty of Exchange Traded Funds which are plays in gold, silver, and other precious metals. Here are a couple.
ETFS Physical Swiss Gold Shares (SGOL) seeks to match the performance of the price of gold bullion by holding physical gold bullion.
ProShares Ultra Silver (AGQ) has a goal of matching twice the performance of silver bullion as measured by the U.S. Dollar fixing price for delivery in London by investing in financial instruments with characteristics of twice the return of the index, utilizing leveraged investment techniques.

Catastrophe Runaway Inflation Portfolio

In this case, the core concept was to adjust intraday volume bars for the smile effect, whereby opening and closing volume are greater than the mid-session trade (see <a href="http://marketrewind.blogspot.com/2008/08/predicting-end-of-day-volume.html">Predicting SPY Volume</a>). Only in this way can the trader assess the normalized significance of volume bars irrespective of the time of day.
In the graph below, you can see the importance of tracking volume as a confirming indicator for prospective peaks and valleys in price action. As long as relative volume is building over and above significant historical levels, it's generally safe to assume that either fear or greed are having their way with momentum. Only when that volume subsides can a new equilibrium said to have been established for a potential pause -or- reversion.

EasyLanguage Relative Volume Indicator

Some members of the Congress made risky bets with their own money on those US stocks and bonds which were likely to fall in the run up to the financial crisis. According to The Wall Street Journal's analysis of Congressional disclosures, investment accounts of 13 members of the Congress or their spouses reveal that they made bearish investments in 2008 through exchange traded funds-portfolios that trade like stocks and mirror an index. 
Apart from being highly leveraged funds, they use derivatives and other techniques to monitor daily moves of the index. However, there is no evidence that suggests these members of the Congress and their spouses exploited their position by using privileged information or failed to follow rules on disclosures. According to the Congressional rules, lawmakers and their families are allowed to invest in—or bet against—publicly held companies they oversee through committee assignments, as well as broader markets or indices. 
Earlier, some of these legislators strongly criticized practices of short selling, or bets on securities which are likely to decline. In February, Senator Johnny Isakson argued against these practices by saying, “We don't need those speculating in the marketplace to take unfair advantage of the values of equities that are owned by Americans all over this country for the sake of making a buck on a short sale.” 
But contrary to his comment, Isakson himself put money on a short-sale. Records show, on Oct. 8 and 9, 2008—as the Federal Reserve was bailing out American International Group Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aig#NYSE">AIG</a>), an account held by Sen. Isakson showed that he had invested more than $30,000 in ProShares UltraShort 7-10 Year Treasury (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/etf#">ETF</a>) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pst#NYSE">PST</a>) and ProShares UltraShort 20+ Year Treasury (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/etf#">ETF</a>) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tbt#NYSE">TBT</a>). These were “leveraged short” funds, designed to gain $2 for each $1 drop in the daily value of U.S. Treasury bonds. However, Isakson denied any involvement in short-selling. He said that his account was professionaly managed by Morgan Stanley Smith Barney; hence he had no control over it. "They make those decisions and I report what they do," he said. "I put money away in my career so I can hopefully retirne one day," he added.
Isakson said that he does support legislation to limit short selling but opposes the idea of a complete ban on it. Reacting over this issue, former Rep. Joel Hefley said, such trading involving members of the Congress or spouses “doesn't look real great when the economy is tanking and people are blaming the government.”

Men think in herds; they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one, according to Erin Arvedlund, author of Too Good to be True. 
As S&amp;P 500 quickly approaches its resistance level of 1200, some investors are skepticism about equity valuations and about stock markets’ ability to sustain themselves. More and more people are looking for stable, safe income from their fixed-income investments. In addition, an aging investor population also creates secular demand for high-quality fixed-income securities.
Banks pay almost no interest on deposits, leaving bond and real estate as pretty much the two main options are fixed-income investors. Bond ETFs are a good way for the average investor to have diversification and flexibility. But those ETFs turned out to be more volatile than expected. Which ETFs are relatively safe?
Biggest Risk for Fixed Income is Inflation 
Bond prices overall will decline when interest rates rise. The average long term Treasury rate from 1870 through 2009 is 4.3% and the average annually CPI for the same period is 2.1%. The following chart from Yahoo shows 10-year-treasure rate since 1962:
One way to reduce growing government debt is to boost prices and wages, issue tax rebates and erode the value of the currency. However, inflation could create lots of problems for the government itself. For example, a lot of government spending such as society security, pensions, even Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS) are tied to inflation. So when inflation rises, so do government obligations, unless the government is going to exclude more and more items from “Core Inflation”.
Credit Rating 
On the day of the Bear Sterns failure, Moody’s maintained a rating for Bear Stearns of A2; S&amp;P gave an A rating until the day of failure. Fitch said it continually merited a solid A+ till March 24, 2008.
Even though people don’t trust rating agencies as much as they used to, credit rating is still one of the biggest components when you value a bond value.
52-Week-Price-Range 
Bond ETFs’ prices fluctuate within a wide range. One way to measure a bond’s volatility is Standard Deviation. A more intuitive way is to compare 52-week-high vs. 52-week-low. S&amp;P 500 (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/spy#">SPY</a>) has 52-week-high / 52-week-low ratio over 151%, while short-term bond ETFs such as SHY only has 102%. According to an article published in the CFA Institute Conference Proceedings Quarterly March 2010 issue titled “The Debt Deflation / Inflation Debate”, history shows that deflation follows deep recession, regardless of the fiscal or monetary policy used to address the nation’s economic woes, 
As Irving Fisher asserted, over indebtedness eventually creates a deflationary economic environment because it causes a decline in asset values and results in distressed selling. 
If you are not concerned about inflation, iShares Barclays Aggregate Bond (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/agg#NYSE">AGG</a>) or Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bnd#NYSE">BND</a>) offer higher return than TIP. These 3, plus short-term treasure ETFs such as SHY, are less volatile than rest of ETFs.
However, rising interest rates can depress the prices of all bonds, and a quick move up in rates could effectively erase the few percentage yields due to the potential price drop. 
Last week 10 year treasure rate was up to 3.85. The rising of rates may forecast some inflationary pressures down the road.
