Separate reports indicated Chinese online retailers PDD Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PDD#NASDAQ">PDD</a>) Pinduoduo and Alibaba&#8217;s Taobao doled out discounts on the iPhone 16 series ahead of its official release due to its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40785959/iphone-16-fails-to-sway-some-chinese-buyers-im-going-to-buy-huaweis-tri-fold-phone-missing-ai-featur" rel="noreferrer noopener">lack of AI features</a>, which will likely roll out for Chinese users in 2025.
Pinduoduo started selling the iPhone 16 Plus with 512 gigabytes of storage at a 10% discount from the official price. The 128GB iPhone 16 is being sold at an even steeper 11% discount.
Both Pinduoduo and Taobao marketplace have slapped a 4% discount on the 256GB version of the high-end iPhone 16 Pro Max. Tmall shopping platform also offers buyers the option to pay for a new Apple handset in 24 instalments without interest charges.
Kuo Ming-chi of TF International Securities <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3278855/apples-iphone-16-already-selling-discount-china-ai-delay-cools-demand" rel="noreferrer noopener">told</a> SCMP that the global pre-order sales for the iPhone 16 are down 13% compared to last year&#8217;s iPhone 15 launch, partly due to the absence of Apple Intelligence and intense competition in China.
International Data Corporation (IDC)&nbsp;had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/08/40600289/apples-market-share-poised-to-gain-genai-and-iphone-16-lead-the-way-idc" rel="noreferrer noopener">projected a recovery</a> in the smartphone market, which was hampered by the supply chain crisis fueled by the 2020 pandemic outbreak in China.
IDC pointed to the success of generative AI in the upcoming iPhone 16 and Apple&#8217;s ability to establish local AI partnerships in China as potential growth factors. It forecasts that GenAI smartphones will capture 18% of the market by 2024, fueled by premium device trends.
Apple stock gained 39% in the last six months. Investors can gain exposure to the stock through Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>).

On Friday, CVS Health Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVS#NYSE">CVS</a>) appointed longtime executive David Joyner as its new president and CEO, replacing Karen Lynch amid the company&#8217;s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/10/n41398693/cvs-health-appoints-david-joyner-president-and-chief-executive-officer" rel="noreferrer noopener">ongoing financial struggles</a>.
Joyner, previously president of CVS Caremark and an executive vice president at the company, steps into this leadership role as Roger Farah, CVS&#8217;s board chairman, assumes the executive chair position.
The company warned that its upcoming third-quarter earnings, set for release on November 6, will miss Wall Street projections.
The company revealed preliminary third-quarter 2024 adjusted EPS of $1.05-$1.10, compared to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $1.70</a>. Analysts expect sales of $92.73 billion.
Results for the third quarter include charges to record premium deficiency reserves (PDRs), primarily related to the company&#8217;s Medicare and Individual Exchange businesses inside its Health Care Benefits segment, of approximately&nbsp;$1.1 billion, which lowered third quarter 2024 Adjusted EPS by&nbsp;$0.63.
In the third quarter of 2024, CVS continued to experience medical cost trends over those projected in its prior outlook.
The Medical Benefit Ratio for the third quarter is currently expected to be approximately 95.2%, which includes a 220-basis point impact from the PDRs.
The company added, &#8221; In light of continued elevated medical cost pressures in the Health Care Benefits segment, investors should no longer rely on the company&#8217;s previous guidance.&#8221;
The pharmacy giant is also backing away from the fiscal year 2024 issued during the second-<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/08/40220306/cvs-health-reports-mixed-q2-earnings-lowers-2024-outlook-reshuffles-segment-management" rel="noreferrer noopener">quarter earnings release</a>.
The company&nbsp;reported second-quarter sales of $91.23 billion, missing the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $91.51 billion</a>.&nbsp;Adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$1.83&nbsp;decreased from&nbsp;$2.21&nbsp;in the prior year, beating the consensus of $1.73.&nbsp;
In Q2 earnings, CVS Health revised its 2024 adjusted EPS guidance to $6.40-$6.65&nbsp;from at least&nbsp;$7.00&nbsp;versus consensus of $6.98.
CVS Health&nbsp;forecasted&nbsp;2024 sales of $369.0 billion—$372.0 billion versus a consensus of $368.876 billion at prior guidance of at least $369 billion.
The company expected a medical benefits ratio of 90.6% – 90.8% versus ~<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/08/40220306/cvs-health-reports-mixed-q2-earnings-lowers-2024-outlook-reshuffles-segment-management" rel="noreferrer noopener">89.8% expected earlier</a>.
The company is already struggling as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a formal complaint against three major pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs)—CVS Health&#8217;s Caremark,&nbsp;Cigna Corp&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CI#NYSE">CI</a>)&nbsp;Express Scripts, and&nbsp;UnitedHealth Group Inc&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNH#NYSE">UNH</a>)&nbsp;Optum—for allegedly engaging in unfair and anti-competitive practices that have inflated the list&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/09/40964870/us-federal-trade-commission-sues-cvs-health-cigna-unitedhealths-pharmacy-benefit-managers-for-infl" rel="noreferrer noopener">price of insulin medications</a>.
As per an October report, CVS Health is also considering a major restructuring that could involve separating its&nbsp;retail <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/10/41115344/cvs-health-mulls-split-of-retail-and-insurance-divisions-to-address-financial-challenges-report" rel="noreferrer noopener">and insurance businesses</a>.

Manara Minerals, a joint venture between Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Ma'aden (Saudi Arabian Mining Co), is nearing a deal to purchase a 15% to 20% stake in First Quantum Minerals (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FQVLF#OTC">FQVLF</a>) Zambian copper and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/nickel" rel="noreferrer noopener">nickel assets</a>.
The potential transaction, which Reuters <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/deals/saudis-manara-advanced-talks-buy-stake-first-quantums-zambian-mines-2024-10-16/" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a> citing information from trusted sources, is valued between $1.5 billion and $2 billion. It includes First Quantum's Kansanshi and Sentinel copper mines and the Enterprise nickel mine.
This deal aligns with Manara's recent investments, including a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41311099/terrorism-in-pakistan-threatens-foreign-mine-development-saudi-arabia-still-invests-billions" rel="noreferrer noopener">$1 billion commitment </a>to Barrick Gold's Reko Diq project in Pakistan and a $2.5 billion investment in Brazilian mining giant Vale.
The sale of its Zambian assets would help the company manage its debt while retaining control over its key operations.
In December 2023, after the Panama government <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/23/12/36259547/copper-shortage-first-quantums-cobre-panama-mine-shuts-down-threatening-supply-balance" rel="noreferrer noopener">ordered the shutdown</a> of its flagship Cobre Panama mine, First Quantum lost significant revenue, pushing the company to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/24/03/37483591/first-quantum-exploring-zambian-asset-sales" rel="noreferrer noopener">explore capital restructuring</a>, including selling assets and issuing a $1 billion share offering.
Zambia, a major player in global copper production, holds vast potential for mining investors, as this metal is critical to the green energy transition. This year, B, a startup backed by billionaires including Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, announced the discovery of one of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/02/36940360/kobold-metals-announces-historic-copper-discovery-in-zambia" rel="noreferrer noopener">largest copper deposits</a> in Zambia's history at the Mingomba site. However, the country's mining sector faces significant challenges, particularly in terms of infrastructure.
Road and rail networks are underdeveloped, limiting material transport, and the country has faced ongoing issues with power supply.
Zambia relies on hydropower for 80% of its electricity, but droughts and fluctuating rainfall have caused frequent shortages.
For companies like First Quantum, ensuring consistent energy for operations has become a key concern. Emergency measures such as importing electricity from South Africa's Eskom have been implemented to mitigate the impact.
Power outages disrupt operations and make mining investments less attractive to foreign investors. The mining industry generates as much as 70% of exports while using about half of the national power demand, making the country's plan to boost the copper output to 1 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/24/04/38115830/zambia-mining-boom-the-road-to-1-million-tons-of-copper" rel="noreferrer noopener">million tons by 2026</a> ambitious.

Hugo Ste-Marie and the rest of his portfolio strategists at the Bank of Nova Scotia recently compiled a list of <a href="https://www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/investment-ideas/article-scotiabanks-10-big-market-themes-for-2024-plus-rob-carricks-top-tfsa/">10 major market themes</a> for 2024. One of them was about Latin America stocks.&nbsp;



Ideas included interest rate cuts, GDP expectations, United States savings, bonds, lower-than-expected earnings, large-cap stocks, S&amp;P 500 predictions, the Magnificent 7, and the type of stocks to buy in 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



As for Latin American equities, Ste-Marie expects them to outperform Asian equities in the year ahead, emphasizing that China stocks will underperform due to growth struggles.&nbsp;



I remain a big believer in the Latin American economy and stocks. Further, 2024 will be an excellent year to broaden your horizons beyond America.



Axel Christensen, Director of Investment Strategy for Latin America at BlackRock, believes Brazil stocks have attractive valuations compared to other emerging markets.

Retailer Jo&atilde;o Moreira Salles, the owner of Casa Moreira Salles, obtained a banking license from the Brazilian government to operate in the banking sector as a correspondent bank (correspondente banc&aacute;rio) for the leading banks in the state of Minas Gerais.&nbsp;



Ultimately, the bank became known as Unibanco. It merged with Itau in 2008, becoming Itau Unibanco Holding. At the time, it was one of the world&rsquo;s 20 largest banks by assets. It continues to grow organically and through acquisitions.&nbsp;



Today, it operates retail banking, private banking, asset management, and corporate and investment banking. It has operations in <a href="https://www.itau.com.br/relacoes-com-investidores/en/itau-unibanco/corporate-profile/">17 countries</a>, including the U.S.



On Dec. 6, the bank <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/itau-unibanco-itub-expands-offering-162700712.html" target="_blank">launched a cryptocurrency</a> trading service for its banking and asset management clients. It initially permits trading for Bitcoin (<a href="https://investorplace.com/cryptocurrency/btc:usd/">BTC:USD</a>) and Ethereum (<a href="https://investorplace.com/cryptocurrency/eth:usd/">ETH:USD</a>). It will add additional cryptocurrencies as it becomes more comfortable with crypto trading.



As the Brazilian central bank prepares to introduce Drex, the digital version of the real, banks such as Itau Unibanco have been forced to upgrade their tech infrastructure to ensure they can handle the digital currency.&nbsp;



The bank&rsquo;s shares are up more than 45% in 2023. Despite these significant gains, the current price equals its share value in February 2020. They currently trade at <a href="https://www.morningstar.com/stocks/xnys/itub/valuation">7.8 times</a> its forward earnings, <a href="https://www.morningstar.com/stocks/xnys/jpm/valuation">20%</a> less than the forward P/E of JPMorgan Chase (NYSE<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/:jpm-stock-quote/">:JPM</a>).&nbsp;

Oil prices have been at their lowest level in the past year, under $70 a barrel of West Texas Intermediate (<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/wti-stock-quote/">WTI</a>). However, Petroleo Brasileiro (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/pbr-stock-quote/">PBR</a>) American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) are up nearly 40% over the past 52 weeks. This compares very favorably with Exxon Mobil (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/xom-stock-quote/">XOM</a>), whose shares are down almost 8% over the same period.&nbsp;



In late November, the company said that it would invest approximately <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/brazils-petrobras-invest-102-billion-next-five-years-2023-11-23/">$102 billion</a> between 2024 and 2028 as part of its strategic plan to grow its business. It was the first five-year plan of new CEO Jean-Paul Prates, who was <a href="https://brazilian.report/liveblog/politics-insider/2023/04/28/petrobras-chairman-prates-ceo/">officially confirmed</a> as CEO in April. It is 31% higher than its five-year plan from 2023 to 2027.



Prates recently said that Brazil <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/brazil-join-opec-wont-cap-oil-output-petrobras-ceo-says-2023-12-01/">would join OPEC+</a> in January but that it would go along with the group&rsquo;s production caps in place.&nbsp;




&ldquo;There is no quota,&rdquo; Reuters reported Prates&rsquo; comments. &ldquo;We would never be part of an organization that imposes (production) quotas to Brazil, Petrobras is a publicly-traded company and we cannot have quotas.&rdquo;




Of the <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/pbr/analystestimates">15 analysts</a> covering its stock, 10 rate it &ldquo;Overweight&rdquo; or an outright &ldquo;Buy,&rdquo; with a target price of $17.07, 18% higher than where it&rsquo;s currently trading.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Raia Drogasil (OTCMKTS:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/radly-stock-quote/">RADLY</a>) is the largest drug-store chain in Brazil with <a href="https://ir.rd.com.br/listresultados.aspx?idCanal=2nlFyAThvxbpyfXPHKc5zw==&amp;linguagem=en">2,868 stores</a> [Q3 2023 presentation link], generating 2022 revenue of <a href="https://ir.rd.com.br/show.aspx?idCanal=6aULUwMyMFpYyWDTxjQNnQ==&amp;linguagem=en">30.9 billion</a> Brazilian real ($6.23 billion). The company was created through the November 2011 merger between Droga Raia and Drogasil. Their histories date back to 1905 and 1935, respectively.&nbsp;



Despite its size, the company controls just 15.1% of the market share in Brazil. This means there is a long-term opportunity to make a consolidation play over the next decade. This provides the rationale for its investment.



In the third quarter, the chain&rsquo;s revenues increased by 16.3% over Q3 2022, to 9.3 billion Brazilian real ($1.87 billion), with digital revenues accounting for 14% of revenue, up 51.4%. On the bottom line, its adjusted net income was 268.4 million Brazilian real ($54.1 million), 33% higher year-over-year.&nbsp;



Its highest market share by region is Sao Paulo, at 27.4%, almost double the market share for the entire country.&nbsp;
