China is looking to target U.S. tech companies in order to gain leverage in trade negotiations <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43577207/trump-says-he-will-announce-reciprocal-tariffs-next-week-that-will-impact-everyone-escalating-trade-war-with-global-partners-the-only-fair-way-to-do-it">with U.S. President Donald Trump</a>.



What To Know: According to the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/china-trade-war-us-tech-03578671?mod=hp_lead_pos3">Wall Street Journal</a>, Chinese officials are building a list of U.S. tech companies that can be probed over antitrust concerns, including Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>). 



The Nvidia probe came after the Biden administration ramped up export controls on high-end semiconductors to China, and the Google probe came immediately after an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods went into effect last week.



China is also targeting Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>) and Synopsys Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNPS#NASDAQ">SNPS</a>).



The goal is to influence tech executives who have become close to Trump as trade tensions rise.



Beijing is also mulling potential tactics in response to the tariffs that Trump has imposed on Chinese goods.

"China is on a chip-gathering exercise,&#8221; Trivium China&#8217;s Tom Nunlist told the WSJ. &#8220;They want to come to the table to negotiate and need something to play with.&#8221;



China has strengthened regulatory tools in recent years including adding an &#8220;unreliable entity list&#8221; and amending laws to tighten rules on anticompetitive acquisitions. Chinese officials reportedly aim to get the attention of some of the top tech executives who appear to be close to Trump, including those who sat next to him on Inauguration Day like Google&#8217;s Sundar Pichai and Apple&#8217;s Tim Cook. 



Chinese tech companies typically criticize Apple because of the fees it charges developers for in-app services. Apple has said its policies help ensure that the apps remain safe.



The report indicates that Chinese regulators have started taking a closer look at Apple in recent weeks as some view Apple&#8217;s fees as &#8220;unreasonably high&#8221; and believe its app rules could hurt competition. 



Price Action: The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) was up more than 1.5% on Monday at last check.



The tech-heavy Invesco QQQ (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) was up about 1.25%. 



The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAGS#BATS">MAGS</a>) was up about 1.15% at the time of writing, according to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>.

China Sets Sights On Apple, Nvidia And Other US Tech Companies As Trade Tensions Rise

Shares of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLF#NYSE">CLF</a>) are trading higher Monday. This follows President Trump's vow to impose a 25% tariff on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/02/43592144/us-steel-aluminum-stocks-rally-as-trump-revives-25-tariff-plan">steel and aluminum imports.</a> 



Investors believe that this will help domestically based companies like Cleveland-Cliffs.



The stock could be breaking out and the downtrend that began a year ago may finally be over. This is why it is our <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/stock-of-the-day">Stock of the Day</a>.



When a stock is trending lower, the market is full of ‘buyer's remorse'. People buy shares and come to regret doing so when the stock falls below the price they paid for it.



When this happens, many of these traders and investors decide to hold on to their losing positions. But they also decide that if they can eventually sell them at the same prices they paid for them and can get out of the position at breakeven, they will.



As a result, if the stock eventually rallies back up to the buying price, they place sell orders. Sometimes, there are so many of these sell orders that a price level that had been support can convert into a resistance level.



This action can be seen on the chart of Cleveland Cliffs.

Back in late April, the stock suffered an aggressive meltdown. But when it reached levels around $16.45, the buyers came out of the woodwork and put a floor underneath it. $16.45 became a support level.



Then in July, the support was broken and the price dropped lower. When this happened, many who paid around $16.45 for shares regretted doing so. A number vowed that if the stock got back up to $16.45, they would place sell orders so they can get out at breakeven.



There were so many of these orders that it created resistance at the price that had been support.



A similar price action occurred around the $14.25 level. In June it had been support. Then it turned into resistance in August and November.



But the tide may now be turning.



As you can see on the chart below, the $10.85 level was support in September and November. Recently, this level has been resistance. But the tariff news could be making the stock break this resistance.

When markets reach bottoms, buyer remorse fades. Levels that had been support may stop becoming resistance. This appears to be the case here. It could mean that Cleveland-Cliff's year-long downtrend is over and a new bull market is forming.

What Happened: Super Bowl LIX commercials were <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/25/02/43560232/super-bowl-lix-commercials-ai-celebs-muppets-warren-buffett-linked-brand-take-the-spotlight">priced between $7 million and $8 million</a> for a 30-second slot by Fox Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOX#NASDAQ">FOX</a>)(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOXA#NASDAQ">FOXA</a>), which had the media rights to the game.



Fox was able to secure $8 million or more for some last-second advertising inventory ahead of Sunday's game.

Corporate America is cheering the strongest earnings season in three years, with S&amp;P 500 companies posting a 16.4% year-over-year earnings growth rate in fourth quarter of 2024—the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">best since late 2021. </a>



Yet, despite the robust numbers, investor optimism is tempered by renewed trade uncertainty. 



President Donald Trump's tariff plans have become a dominant theme on earnings calls, raising concerns about rising costs and supply chain disruptions.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Earnings Surge: S&amp;P 500 Posts Strongest Growth Since 2021</h3>



The S&amp;P 500's blended earnings growth rate for fourth quarter 2024 stands at 16.4%, according to FactSet&#8216;s latest data, significantly outpacing initial forecasts. If this number holds, it will mark the strongest annual earnings growth since the fourth quarter of 2021.



So far, 62% of S&amp;P 500 companies have reported earnings, with 77% surpassing earnings-per-share estimates and 63% exceeding revenue forecasts. The average earnings surprise stands at 7.5%, comfortably above the 10-year average of 6.7%.



The average earnings surprise was 7.5%, below the 5-year average of 8.5% but above the 10-year one of 6.7%.



FactSet highlighted that the earnings outlook has improved as more companies report results. 



&#8220;On Dec. 31, the estimated (year-over-year) earnings growth rate for the S&amp;P 500 for Q4 2024 was 11.8%. Eight sectors are reporting higher earnings today (compared to December 31) due to positive EPS surprises,&#8221; FactSet wrote. 



Among the standout sectors and companies:



<ul>
<li>Financials: Earnings soared 51.2%, led by strong bank results from Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>) and JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>).</li>



<li>Consumer Discretionary: Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) fueled 24.6% sector growth after reporting EPS of $1.86, well above the $1.49 estimate.</li>



<li>Communication Services: Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) led 30.2% growth, posting EPS of $8.02, smashing expectations of $6.76.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tariff Fears Surge as Key Business Concern</h2>



While earnings have surprised to the upside, 146 S&amp;P 500 companies have mentioned "tariffs" during their earnings calls—the highest number since mid-2019, according to FactSet. 



If the current trend continues, the fourth quarter of 2024 could set a 10-year record for the number of companies discussing tariff-related concerns.



Industrials have been at the center of the discussion, with 39 companies citing tariff risks. The materials and utilities sectors have also been hit hard, with more than 80% of companies in these industries addressing the issue.



With Trump imposing a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/02/43592144/us-steel-aluminum-stocks-rally-as-trump-revives-25-tariff-plan">25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports</a> and hinting at reciprocal tariffs on all countries, businesses are struggling to gauge the potential impact. 



Some executives have warned of higher costs, supply chain disruptions, and margin pressure, but many remain uncertain about the ultimate financial toll.



Among the S&amp;P 500 firms providing forward guidance, 30 have chosen to exclude tariff effects altogether due to the unpredictable nature of trade policy, while 21 have incorporated tariff risks into their outlooks but widened their forecast ranges to account for potential volatility.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Muted Market Reaction Despite Strong Earnings</h3>



Despite the stellar earnings reports, stock price reactions have been subdued. Companies that beat EPS estimates have seen their stock prices rise by just 0.3% on average, well below the five-year average of 1.0%. 



Meanwhile, stocks missing estimates have dropped 2.4%, slightly worse than the five-year average decline of 2.3%.



&#8220;To date, the market is rewarding positive earnings surprises reported by S&amp;P 500 companies for Q4 less than average and punishing negative earnings surprises reported by S&amp;P 500 companies for Q4 slightly more than average,&#8221; FactSet wrote.



The uncertainty surrounding tariffs may be playing a role in this muted reaction. 



Investors, while encouraged by strong earnings, appear hesitant to fully price in optimism amid concerns over potential disruptions to supply chains and rising input costs.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Looking Ahead: Will Tariffs Derail Growth?</h3>



Wall Street analysts currently expect S&amp;P 500 earnings to grow 8.7% in the first quarter of 2025 and 10.2% in the second quarter. Yet, those forecasts could come under pressure if tariffs begin to weigh on corporate margins and consumer demand.



For now, corporate America is delivering some of the strongest earnings growth in years, but the real test may come in the months ahead as trade tensions escalate.

Steel and aluminum stocks jumped Monday in premarket trading after President Donald Trump said he would reintroduce 25% tariffs <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/metals">on imported metals</a>.



The move aims to reshape global trade <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">and revive domestic production</a>, but also reignites trade tensions that defined his first term.



What Happened: In a statement aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said the tariffs would apply to all countries, without specifying when they would take effect.



Markets reacted swiftly, with shares of major American steel and aluminum producers rallying ahead of the opening bell



Steel and aluminum stocks soared in premarket trading as investors quickly priced in the potential benefits for domestic metal producers.



Century Aluminum Co. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CENX#NASDAQ">CENX</a>) gained 10.4%, Nucor Corp. Why It Matters: Tariffs have major implications for U.S. manufacturers, foreign exporters, and global supply chains. They also risk retaliatory measures from key U.S. trading partners.



Trump first imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum in 2018, citing national security concerns. Those duties—25% on steel and 10% on aluminum—aimed to protect domestic manufacturers from what he called unfair competition, particularly from China.

European steelmakers warned that tariffs could push excess global supply toward their markets.



&#8220;The measures would lead to further volume diversions to Europe, increasing import pressure due to overcapacity from China and other countries,&#8221; said Olaf Reinecke, CEO of German steelmaker Salzgitter.



What&#8217;s Next: Trump indicated plans to introduce reciprocal tariffs in the coming days, matching rates imposed by other countries on U.S. goods. These measures could take effect almost immediately.

US Steel, Aluminum Stocks Rally As Trump Revives 25% Tariff Plan

Shares of fast-food chain McDonald&#8217;s Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MCD#NYSE">MCD</a>) are trading higher in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/premarket" rel="noreferrer noopener">premarket on Monday</a>.



The company reported a fourth-quarter sales decline of 0.3% year-on-year to $6.388 billion, missing the analyst consensus estimate of $6.442 billion.



Global comparable sales increased 0.4%, while U.S. comparable sales slipped 1.4%.



Comparable sales for International Operated Markets segment increased 0.1% and the International Developmental Licensed Markets segment improved 4.1%.



Systemwide sales increased&nbsp;2%&nbsp;(2%&nbsp;in constant currencies).



Sales by company-owned and operated restaurants dropped 7% to $2.3 billion, while sales from franchised restaurants grew 2% at $3.95 billion.



Systemwide sales to loyalty members across 60 loyalty markets were over $30 billion for the twelve-month period and approximately $8 billion for the quarter.

Total operating costs and expenses decreased 2% to $3.52 billion. Operating income for the quarter climbed 2% to $2.86 billion, with an operating margin of 44.9% compared to 43.7% last year.



Adjusted EPS of $2.83 was in line with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst consensus estimate.</a>



The company held $1.08 billion in cash and equivalents as of December 31, 2024. Operating cash flow for twelve months totaled $9.44 billion with a free cash flow of $6.67 billion.

McDonald's Q4 Earnings: Stagnant Revenue Growth, US Comp Sales Decline And More

Elliott Management, a U.S.-based activist hedge fund managing approximately $70 billion in assets, has reportedly acquired a stake in oil giant BP plc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BP#NYSE">BP</a>).



Elliott is advocating for substantial changes at the British oil company to boost its performance, according to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/business/energy-oil/elliott-takes-stake-in-struggling-oil-giant-bp-815efbd7" rel="noreferrer noopener">report </a>from the Wall Street Journal.



The hedge fund&#8217;s engagement with BP suggests rising discontent with the company&#8217;s current path, particularly as BP&#8217;s market value trails behind competitors such as Shell and Exxon Mobil, per the report. BP&#8217;s leadership has been dealing with elevated debt levels and a declining stock price.



According to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pro/">Benzinga Pro</a>, BP stock lost over 11% in the last year.

The energy giant is planning to streamline its operations and lower expenses as part of a broader effort to save $2 billion by the end of 2026.

All sectors of the S&amp;P 500 closed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43585561/dow-dips-over-400-points-following-tariffs-threat-investor-sentiment-declines-fear-greed-index-in-fear-zone">lower</a> on Friday, with communication services, consumer discretionary, and materials leading the losses. President Donald Trump announced that &#8216;reciprocal tariffs&#8217; would take effect next week, further escalating trade tensions.



Investor sentiment was impacted by a mixed January jobs report, heightened inflation expectations, and concerns over trade tariffs. The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey showed a sharp rise in inflation expectations, with the one-year outlook reaching 4.3%, its highest since November 2023.



Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) reported stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings, but its first-quarter sales guidance fell short of market expectations, forecasting net sales between $151 billion and $155.5 billion, below the $158.5 billion estimate.

After Friday's sharp decline, Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Research, highlighted that Mondays and Fridays have been weak for stocks so far in 2025.

According to the data underscored by Adam Turnquist, the chief technical strategist for LPL Financial, bullish sentiment has been gradually declining after remaining above average for most of last year.



"Currently, only about one-third of investors express a bullish outlook on stocks over the next six months, down approximately 8% from the previous week," he said.



However, Turnquist added that while sentiment is clearly not a science and usually follows price, the current degree of bearish sentiment could be considered a contrarian signal, "suggesting that the recent dip in stocks may have reached its low point."

US Stocks To Open On A Positive Note After A String Of Bad Mondays: Recent Dip Has 'Reached Its Low Point,' Says Technical Analyst

On Friday, February 7, U.S. markets closed lower after Trump announced plans for reciprocal tariffs amid weak jobs data and declining consumer sentiment. Despite early struggles, strong earnings provided some support. Consumer sentiment hit a seven-month low, inflation expectations surged, and job growth slowed, reinforcing expectations that the Fed will delay rate cuts until June.



The University of Michigan reported a sharp rise in inflation expectations, with the one-year outlook hitting 4.3%, the highest since November 2023. February&#8217;s jobs report showed mixed results: job growth slowed, but unemployment dropped more than expected, and wages surged.



All S&amp;P 500 sectors ended in the red, led by losses in communication services, consumer discretionary, and materials stocks.



The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.99% and closed at 44,303.40, the S&amp;P 500 closed lower by 0.95% at 6,025.99, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.36% to finish at 19,523.40.

What Happened: According to T-Mobile, 500,000 square miles of the U.S., previously unreachable by terrestrial towers, can now maintain connectivity.



When the service officially launches in July, it will be included at no extra cost for customers on T-Mobile&#8217;s premium Go5G Next plan. Other T-Mobile users can add it for $15 per month.

Once the beta ends in July, the service will be available for $20 per month.



The service initially offers text via satellite, with voice and data features to follow.

The University of Michigan&#8217;s consumer sentiment survey revealed an &#8220;unusually large&#8221; spike in inflation expectations. The one-year inflation outlook surged by a full percentage point to 4.3%, marking its highest level since November 2023.



On the macro front, February's jobs report revealed a mixed outcome, with employment growth slowing down more than expected, yet unemployment fell more than expected, and wages surged more than expected.



Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) reported better-than-expected earnings and sales results for its fourth quarter after the market close Thursday. However, the company said it sees first-quarter net sales to come in a range of $151 billion to $155.5 billion, up 5% to 9% year-over-year, down from market estimates of $158.5 billion.



All sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with communication services, consumer discretionary, and materials stocks recording losses on Friday.



The Dow Jones closed lower by over 444 points to 44,303.40 on Friday. The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.95% to 6,025.99, while the Nasdaq Composite dipped 1.36% at 19,523.40 during Friday's session.

While fans of the team will shell out thousands of dollars to attend the game in New Orleans, millions will watch the game from the comfort of their home or a Super Bowl viewing party. Here's a look at what would have happened if a person invested the amount they would have spent on Super Bowl tickets for the last 14 seasons on Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) instead.



What Happened: Bitcoin was <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/education/25/01/42789566/happy-birthday-bitcoin-16-fun-facts-about-leading-cryptocurrency">launched in January 2009</a> with the first 50 BTC mined. The launch of the cryptocurrency, which today is the largest by market capitalization, followed a whitepaper that was released in October 2008.
