The Fund seeks to track the investment results of the MSCI ACWI Select Gold Miners Investable Market Index (IMI) (the Underlying Index), which has been developed by MSCI Inc. (the Index Provider or MSCI) to target a minimum of 30 companies in developed and emerging markets that are involved in the business of gold mining. MSCI begins with the MSCI ACWI Investable Market Index (IMI), and then selects securities of companies that are primarily focused on the extraction and production of gold, and state as a general policy that they do not hedge their exposure to gold prices as long as no indication of hedging activities is found in their annual reports or such hedging activities are identified but represent less than 10% of the business. If the number of constituents from the selection universe is less than 30, MSCI will include additional securities from the selection universe according to a criteria based on a company's hedging activities.

Newmont Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>) shares are trading higher on Monday. The company disclosed a deal to sell its Musselwhite operation in Ontario, Canada, to Orla Mining Ltd. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ORLA#AMEX">ORLA</a>) for up to<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/11/b42032739/newmont-announces-sale-of-musselwhite-for-up-to-850-million" rel="noreferrer noopener"> $850 million in total consideration</a>.
As per the deal, Newmont will receive $810 million in cash at closing and up to $40 million in contingent payments.
The deal will push Newmont&#8217;s total proceeds from non-core asset sales past $2 billion and expected to close in the first quarter of 2025.
Notably, in February 2024, Newmont announced plans to divest six operations and two projects across its Australian, Ghanaian, and North American units.
With agreements finalized for assets in Australia, Ghana, and Musselwhite, the company aims to complete sales of its remaining North American non-core assets by the first quarter of 2025.
Also, Orla Mining expects the deal to be materially accretive on all key operating and financial per-share metrics, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/42031628" rel="noreferrer noopener">benefiting all existing shareholders.</a>
Newmont expects total gross proceeds from 2024 transactions to reach up to $2.9 billion, including $2.3 billion from non-core divestitures and $527 million from other investment sales.
Newmont is advancing shareholder returns with a $3 billion buyback program, repurchasing 7.2 million shares for $336 million since October 2024. It also reduced debt by $500 million in 2024, nearing its $8 billion targeted debt balance.

Newmont Strikes Deal To Sell Musselwhite Gold Mine, Bolstering $2 Billion Asset Sales Streak

On Tuesday, Newmont Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>) disclosed the sale of its Akyem operation in Ghana to Zijin Mining Group <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/10/b41242149/newmont-announces-definitive-agreement-to-divest-akyem-for-up-to-1-billion" rel="noreferrer noopener">for up to $1 billion in cash</a>.
This divestment aligns with Newmont&#8217;s strategy to focus on its Tier 1 assets and streamline its portfolio.
As per the deal, Newmont will receive $900 million in cash at closing and an additional $100 million contingent on meeting certain conditions.
The proceeds are expected to be used to support its capital allocation priorities, including strengthening its balance sheet and returning capital to shareholders.
The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2024, pending regulatory approvals and customary conditions, and it will have no material impact on Newmont&#8217;s 2024 outlook.
Newmont has not adjusted its non-core guidance for the year. The company remains committed to Ghana, with plans to invest $950 million to $1.050 billion in the Ahafo North gold mining project.
Tom Palmer, Newmont&#8217;s President and Chief Executive Officer, said, &#8220;The sale of Akyem represents continued progress on the non-core asset divestiture program announced in February, supporting our focus on the Tier 1 assets in Newmont&#8217;s portfolio that will drive sustainable growth and the return of capital to shareholders.&#8221;

&#8220;Additionally, we have included the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) in the process in preparation of their potential investment in Akyem to further Ghanaian interest in the mine.&#8221;

Newmont Strikes ~$1B Deal For Akyem Sale, Focus Sharpens on Tier 1 Assets

Despite the stronger-than-expected increase in non-farm payrolls last month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics&#8217; June Employment Situation report indicated an overall cooling trend <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/07/39646053/mixed-picture-for-fed-june-payrolls-rise-more-than-expected-unemployment-rate-ticks-up-wage-grow">in the U.S. labor market. </a>
Significant downward revisions of 111,000 fewer payrolls in the previous two reports, an unexpected rise in the unemployment rate, and the anticipated slowdown in wage growth are prompting most economists to believe the Federal Reserve may be more confident about announcing an interest rate cut, with September being the nearest option. 
Investors seem to share this view, with the probability of a September rate cut rising from 72% to 76% after the jobs report&#8217;s release, and the expected cuts increasing from 52 to 55 basis points by the end of the year.
As a result, ETFs tracking interest-rate sensitive industries – such as the iShares MSCI Global Gold Miners ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RING#NASDAQ">RING</a>) and the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IGV#NYSE">IGV</a>) – outperformed on Friday, up 2.7% and 1% respectively.

Analyst Perspective
Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM US LLP, noted that while demand for labor remains solid, it is slowing. &#8220;Fears of a wage spiral which would result in a resurgence of inflation can finally be put to rest,&#8221; Brusuelas said, as the three-month average annualized pace of average hourly earnings has eased to 3.5%. 
He emphasized that the primary takeaway from the June employment data is its consistency with economic normalization, aligning with other growth and inflation data pointing towards an easing of the Federal Reserve&#8217;s restrictive policy rate by September.
He warned that the Fed must avoid talking itself into a corner that could result in falling behind the curve, as it did during the first year of the pandemic. &#8220;As the economy cools, the Fed needs to relax its too restrictive policy rate to avoid an unnecessary termination of the business cycle.&#8221;
James E. Thorne, chief market strategist at Wellington Altus, observed the substantial net revisions of 111,000 jobs from the prior two months, combined with the modest increase of 206,000 jobs in the most recent period, indicating a volatile and uncertain labor market. 
&#8220;The government&#8217;s significant increase of 70,000 jobs raises questions about the sustainability of such growth,&#8221; Thorne said, adding that the impact of extreme levels of government spending should be considered. 
He criticized the Federal Reserve&#8217;s potential delayed response, noting, &#8220;A mere 25 basis points cut will not be sufficient to reverse the downward momentum in the private sector. The Fed is late, and the boom/bust cycle in rates continues.&#8221;
Bill Adams, chief economist for Comerica Bank, remarked that the unemployment rate in June rose to its highest since late 2021, despite good monthly job growth offset by downward revisions to March and April. 
&#8220;The current data suggests the economy is growing, but its pace has cooled considerably over the last year,&#8221; Adams said, aligning this with a gradual rise in the unemployment rate. 
The economist highlighted that the uptick in the unemployment rate was due to an increase in labor force participation, with prime-age participation reaching its highest since 2002. &#8220;The job market looks considerably cooler in the June report than in May, and the unemployment rate at 4.1% is above where the median Fed policymaker projected it at year-end,&#8221; he explained. 
Adams suggested that while the labor market isn't soft enough to justify an interest rate cut at this month's meeting, the cooling trend is evident, and a rate cut could come in September if inflation holds.
Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist for LPL Financial, highlighted the market&#8217;s immediate reaction to the 4.1% unemployment rate, noting that both the policy-sensitive 2-year and 10-year Treasury yields edged lower. 
She raised increasing evidence that the Fed will need to initiate a rate easing cycle to support its maximum employment mandate. &#8220;The cooling in the labor market, despite the higher than consensus estimate for the headline payroll print, portends a broader economic downturn,&#8221; Krosby said.
She warned that the consumer&#8217;s growing concern about job security could lead to a frigid summer for the economy, especially with the latest ISM Manufacturing and Service Sector PMI data indicating a broader economic contraction. 
&#8220;Today&#8217;s report should have Fed officials troubled that the desired cooling in the economy could transition into a frigid summer,&#8221; she concluded.

As April comes to a close, it&#8217;s time to compile the rankings for the top-performing sector and industry exchange-traded <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">funds of the month.</a>
Taking a broader look at the stock market, the S&amp;P 500 Index, represented by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), finished April on a downturn, declining by approximately 3%. This marks the end of a five-month streak of gains.
Similarly, the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), experienced a 3.5% decline.
Among large-cap indices, blue-chip stocks showed slight underperformance, with the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) slipping by 4.5%.
Small-cap stocks, represented by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), plummeted by over 6%, marking their worst performance since October 2023.
Overall, it has been a challenging month for the stock market, primarily due to inflation surprises surpassing expectations. This has led to a recalibration of market expectations regarding potential Federal Reserve rate cuts.
Additionally, complex global geopolitical tensions have emerged, notably between Israel and Iran, alongside the ongoing issue in the Gaza Strip.
May is anticipated to start with a crucial event as investors await the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/macro-notification/24/04/38526201/is-hawkish-shift-on-inflation-imminent-wall-street-analysts-traders-brace-for-fed-impa">(FOMC) meeting on Wednesday. </a>
While no interest rate changes are expected, all eyes will be on Fed Chair Jerome Powell&#8216;s remarks to assess the Fed&#8217;s stance in response to recent inflation surprises.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Performance Of Sector ETFs In April 2024</h2>
At the sector level, only the utilities sector managed to avoid losses for the month, rising by 2.1%.
The largest stock contributors to the utilities&#8217; performance in April are NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEE#NYSE">NEE</a>), The Southern Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SO#NYSE">SO</a>), Dominion Energy, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/D#NYSE">D</a>) and NRG Energy (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NRG#NYSE">NRG</a>) which showed monthly gains between 4% and 8%. 
Energy stocks remained broadly stable, while the other nine S&amp;P 500&#8217;s sectors showcased losses.
Real estate experienced the worst performance, down by over 7%, dragged down by its high sensitivity to interest rates, as Treasury yields increase across the board during the month. 
Following real estate, the technology and healthcare sectors also showed poor performance in April.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Performance Of Industry ETFs In April 2024</h2>
Based on the industry ETF list provided by BlackRock Inc.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLK#NYSE">BLK</a>) iShares, only five out of the 25 industries managed to report gains in April. Among them, miners did well across the board, with silver, copper, and gold mining stocks reporting robust gains. 
Standout contributors to the mining industry&#8217;s outperformance in April were Pan American Silver Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PAAS#NYSE">PAAS</a>), up over 20%, Newmont Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>), up 14%, Anglo American plc (OTCPK: AAUKF), up over 40%
Energy producers also managed to end the month in the green.
On the bottom side of the industry rankings, homebuilders, transportation, biotech stocks, digital infrastructure and real estate all report losses between 7% and 9.6% in April.

Wall Street is on track for its worst month in 2024 as growing inflation fears and escalating geopolitical tensions weigh on investors&#39; sentiment. McKenna pointed out the stark disconnection in the market, with gold trading above $2,000 per ounce while gold stocks are priced at a discount of 50 to 80%. This discrepancy presents a unique opportunity for investors, according to McKenna, who is &#8220;very happy to take advantage of this currently&#8221;. 
He noted the decline in capital expenditure among mining companies to 80% of what was spent a decade or more ago, forecasting severe supply constraints for various metals.
&#8220;What&#8217;s really exciting for us is that valuations are reaching extremes,&#8221; McKenna said. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Newmont Corp: A Case Study in Undervaluation</h3>
McKenna underscored Newmont Corp.&#8216;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>) 60% stock price drop from the previous year, despite a 10% rise in gold prices. 
Contrary to concerns of value destruction, McKenna praised Newmont&#8217;s acquisition of Newcrest Mining last year as &#8216;a steal&#8217; for the company. 
He argued that Newmont&#8217;s valuation has actually increased.
&#8220;Currently, you can buy gold in the ground at the largest gold producer with the longest mine lives for under $200.00 an ounce. Even if you add lifting cost and then a margin on top of that, it&#8217;s still well below the current gold price of $2,000,&#8221; McKenna said.

Barron's Weekend Stock Picks: Freshpet Caught In Crosshairs Of Activist Hedge Fund, GM Struggles To Maintain Rally And Snowflake Faces Headwinds

Peter Schiff, chief Economist and global strategist&nbsp;at Euro Pacific Capital,&nbsp;asked Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) &quot;fanatics&quot; to stop making fun of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/22/11/29531411/gold-gains-1-over-the-dollar-could-this-be-the-time-to-buy">gold based on its market movement</a>&nbsp;in November 2022.
&ldquo;#Bitcoin fanatics need to stop making fun of #gold&#39;s $52 rise, claiming a 3% move is nothing compared to what Bitcoin does. Bitcoin was only up 4% today. Not nearly enough of an extra gain to offset substantially higher risk. The $GDX was up over 10%. The miners are a better bet,&rdquo; Schiff said in his tweet at the time.

Schiff explained how positive divergences in gold prices indicate the commodity was likely to have witnessed its low in&nbsp;and was headed higher going forward. &ldquo;#Gold is up over $50 today. Daily gains that large rarely happen. The positive divergences I have been pointing out between #silver and the miners likely mean gold has seen its lows. If so, $50 daily spikes will soon be common. In fact, gold may soon have its first $100 up day,&rdquo; he said in his tweet on Sunday.

&ldquo;Since the end of Aug. the $GDXJ, an index of junior #gold mining stocks, is up 5.5%. During that same period of time, the NASDAQ was down 11.5%. Lots of investors own big tech. Very few own junior miners. This is likely the beginning of a long trend. Don&#39;t be the last one onboard,&rdquo; he said in his tweet at the time.
The VanEck Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gdx#NYSE">GDX</a>) closed over 10% higher on Nov. 4, 2022, while the iShares MSCI Global Gold Miners ETF (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ring#NASDAQ">RING</a>) closed 9.76% higher on the same day.

This is how things are going for gold exchange-traded funds this year. Physically-backed ETFs, such as the SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/gld#NYSE">GLD</a>), have been good. Gold mining ETFs have been better. A lot better. For example, the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/gdx#NYSE">GDX</a>), is up 73.1 percent year-to-date, a performance that is about three and a half times better than GLD&#39;s performance.
Further underscoring the strength of gold miners ETFs this year is this anecdote: Of the top 11 non-leveraged ETFs on a year-to-date basis, nine are either gold or silver miners ETFs. Of the remaining two ETFs, one is a mining and materials fund heavy on gold miners. The other is the iShares MSCI All Peru Capped Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/epu#NYSE">EPU</a>). Peru is a major producer of gold and one of the world&#39;s largest silver-producing countries.
Also on that list is the iShares MSCI Global Gold Miners ETF (iShares Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ring#NYSE">RING</a>)), which is higher by a dumbfounding 86.13 percent this year.

<h3>Where This Success Originates</h3>
Sometimes, investors are obsessed with the &ldquo;why&rdquo; behind big moves, such as those being notched by ETFs like RING. Fortunately, the answer is not hard: Thank global central banks, including the Federal Reserve.
&ldquo;At the same time, gold has benefited from central bank policies and the level of real interest rates (in other words, the interest rate after inflation.) According to Bloomberg data, gold has typically performed best in environments in which real interest rates were low to negative [...] We are seeing stark examples of this with the current environment of negative interest rates in Japan and many parts of Europe,&rdquo; said BlackRock <a href="https://www.blackrockblog.com/2016/05/04/gold-rally/">in a recent note</a>.
Last month, the Federal Reserve <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/16/03/7725043/peter-schiff-janet-yellen-and-the-federal-reserve-are-losing-credibil">opted against</a> boosting interest rates, leaving many market participants feeling that the odds of the central bank raising borrowing costs four times this year, as many thought would be the case heading into 2016, are rapidly dwindling.
The $125.5 million RING devotes over 24 percent of its combined weight to just two stocks &ndash; Barrick Gold Corporation (USA) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/abx#NYSE">ABX</a>) and Newmont Mining Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/nem#NYSE">NEM</a>). However, there is more to the story with gold miners and the relevant ETFs.
<h3>The Story Continues</h3>
&ldquo;The MSCI Global Gold Miners Index has rallied an incredible 76 percent this year, but much of the performance is due to the recovery in valuations: According to Bloomberg data, gold miner stocks were battered last year, with the index down 45 percent from its 2015 high. Now the stocks are not as attractive. At the same time, real rates have historically had little to no impact on equity returns,&rdquo; according to BlackRock.
