Brands that rely on the Asia-Pacific region to produce apparel goods are likely trying to find ways to mitigate the impact of President Donald Trump&#8216;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reciprocal tariff plan</a>,
The average pre-mitigation headwinds to gross margin and EPS are 670bps and 65%, respectively.
On the worse end of the EPS-impact spectrum, Needham &amp; Co.&#8217;s analyst Tom Nikic noted Under Armour, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UAA#NYSE">UAA</a>), VF Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VFC#NYSE">VFC</a>), and Nike, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NKE#NYSE">NKE</a>). Those companies have relatively low margin structures given their recent struggles. 
As a result, these three companies have little &#8220;cushion&#8221; to absorb incremental tariffs. Nikic noted that the pre-mitigation headwinds will wipe out the companies&#8217; EPS power.

The least impacted brands in Nikic&#8217;s coverage? Ralph Lauren Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RL#NYSE">RL</a>) and Foot Locker, Inc.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FL#NYSE">FL</a>). The company has a significant international presence and high-margin P&amp;L. This will likely result in just a 20-25% pre-mitigation headwind to EPS, he predicts.
Nikic also noted that Ralph Lauren has a strong recent track record of raising prices (eight straight years of rising average unit retail prices in the DTC channel). The analyst is confident that they can do so if necessary.
Nikic also highlighted Foot Locker. Suppliers import the sneakers they sell, so they have very little direct exposure. They have an indirect risk of being forced to &#8220;share in the pain&#8221; of their tariff-addled suppliers, but at least they are one step removed from the tariffs themselves.
The analyst also does not expect to see an in-sourcing of manufacturing to the U.S., as it would be highly challenging to build the manufacturing capacity in the U.S. and to find labor with enough expertise to work in U.S.-based apparel/footwear factories.

Needham hosted Spencer Perlman, director of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Healthcare Research at</a> Veda Partners, an investment advisory and consulting firm with extensive expertise in government policy analysis. During the conversation, analyst Gil Blum discussed several topics of interest, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">including trade tariffs</a>, recent personnel changes in the FDA/HHS, 503A/503B compounding related to GLP-1s, the FTC and their potential impact on healthcare equities.
At the moment, pharmaceutical companies are exempt from reciprocal tariffs. However, a fact sheet issued by the White House suggests that the administration may pursue tariffs through Section 232, which allows for imposing tariffs under specific circumstances, such as national security emergencies.

If successful, these tariffs could command rates of over 25% and are typically more challenging to unwind, according to Blum.
President Trump leveraged Section 232 to impose a 25% tariff on steel imports in 2018, which remains in place today. Currently, investors perceive Pharma names as a relative haven.
Blum noted that generic drug manufacturers will be particularly negatively impacted by tariffs, given that most APIs are produced in ex-U.S. regions such as China and India.
Generics have a narrower margin than branded drugs, implying increased sensitivity to expected price hikes. Mr. Perlman noted that other industries, including health plans and CROs, remain relatively insulated at this time. He noted that tariffs, in general, will remain in place for the remainder of President Trump&#8217;s term in office.
Blum noted that the FDA will continue to run at a high level as intended. Recent layoffs will most impact non-reviewers, including those working in communications and other supportive roles.
Drug reviewers are paid through PDUFA user fees (~55% of the FDA budget) and, therefore, are less likely to be laid off. With fewer staff, there is a higher likelihood of delays in the review process and manufacturing site inspections.
Perlman noted that the FDA will try to protect review quality by moving slower if needed.
With Congress in control of the NIH budget, he doesn&#8217;t expect large cuts to be implemented soon.
Budget reductions could negatively impact future drug discovery; however, the effects likely won&#8217;t be felt in the near term.
Perlman acknowledged that it will not be easy to replace the former head of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), who resigned last weekend due to a disagreement with HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. over vaccine safety and transparency.
However, Blum noted that the adverse market reaction to the news, particularly in the cell and gene therapy space, was likely to be overblown. He said that many competent professionals are still working in the agency, attempting to drive novel therapies to market. Blum warned that it may be challenging for whoever replaces Dr. Marks to have an independent viewpoint in the position for as long as Kennedy remains HHS Secretary.
Blum&#8217;s discussion covered the nuances of 503A and 503B compounding. 503A represents one-off, non-solicited instances where a patient requires a special accommodation to consume the molecule, while 503B is more pertinent to outsourcing and the broad manufacturing of compounds.
With 503A focusing on unsolicited receipts, Blum noted that the Hospital Information Management System&nbsp;(HIMS) may be a violation; if a company is advertising that it will accept an unsolicited receipt, Blum noted this alone represents solicitation. A response could come in the form of updated FDA guidance, which tends to start with draft guidance before being followed by rounds of public comments before final guidance is determined; under the Trump administration, processes can be expedited and jump to final guidance, which could result in faster than expected changes if the FDA pursues them.
Blum&#8217;s call highlighted various other items that likely rank higher in priority on the FDA&#8217;s near-term list. On the other hand, private industry could also take legal action. Blum noted that companies could have a basis on drugs not being approved through normal processes and vendors potentially violating 503A/503B regulations.
Injunctions are approved by the courts in cases involving the FDA or private companies. Given the lack of precedence, they remain a bit of a wild card.
In the interim, Blum noted the more HIMS could diversify its weight loss portfolio, as it has to an extent with oral offerings and generic liraglutide, the better. He noted the near-term catalysts for the stock to be any potential tariff extensions to pharma, as it will clarify the administration&#8217;s stance on the likes of Eli Lilly and Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLY#NYSE">LLY</a>) versus Novo Nordisk (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVO#NYSE">NVO</a>) and any announcements related proposed updates to FDA guidance on 503A/503B.
Perlman pointed out that every new administration has its priorities, including healthcare-related. What&#8217;s unprecedented is the extremeness of the projects being focused on. According to Blum, there is almost no question that Kennedy will continue to have a negative stance on vaccines and vaccine policy for the remainder of his term. It&#8217;s unclear whether this negative sentiment will prevent additional vaccines, such as the next version of the COVID booster shot, from being approved.
New FTC chair Andrew Ferguson will likely take a lighter stance on antitrust enforcement than former chair Lina Khan. Blum noted that chairman Ferguson will take more aggressive actions than historically seen under previous Republican administrations. Tech deals will likely continue to be under closer scrutiny than those in healthcare. Perlman also pointed out that the FTC cannot fully operate until replacements are found for the agency&#8217;s previous Democratic commissioners, who Trump fired in March.

This move marks a strategic move to strengthen ties in Saudi Arabia's financial sector.

SS&C Expands Into Middle East With New Saudi Arabia Office

Needham analyst John Todaro warns that materials costs for high-performance computing (HPC) capital expenditures and core infrastructure at <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/crypto">U.S. Bitcoin mining </a>sites are set to rise by roughly 20%, driven largely by newly imposed tariffs.
Most Bitcoin mining machine manufacturers rely heavily on Asia for production.

Given the soft demand for mining rigs today, manufacturers likely eat some tariffs but already operate on thin margins.
According to Todaro, Bitdeer sells machines at $15/th. He estimated that it produces around $11/th.
Recently, the company cited soft demand from private miners as they delayed delivery to customers on most prior orders (the company can retain the 20% deposit, however).
Here are Todaro&#8217;s estimates for tariff impacts across his complete coverage universe:
For Applied Digital Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APLD#NASDAQ">APLD</a>), Todaro noted the majority of the first 100MW HPC build was done at ~$11 million/MW. The analyst expects ~20% higher capex from here for the remainder and new builds ($13 million/MW). He expects similar increases to HPC build costs for Cipher Mining Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CIFR#NASDAQ">CIFR</a>), Riot Platforms, Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIOT#NASDAQ">RIOT</a>), IREN Ltd (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IREN#NASDAQ">IREN</a>), TeraWulf Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WULF#NASDAQ">WULF</a>), Hut 8 Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HUT#NASDAQ">HUT</a>), Bitdeer Technologies Group (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BTDR#NASDAQ">BTDR</a>).
Todaro expects the retrofit of Core Scientific, Inc&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CORZ#NASDAQ">CORZ</a>) sites, which were initially expected to cost $5 million &#8211; 8 million, to be at the high end or above that range. Core Scientific&#8217;s spending is fixed at $1.5 million/MW for its HPC site builds. Todaro expects builds to run similarly to peers&#8217; 20% higher costs for future sites with a different tenant.
Bitdeer Technologies produces its own mining machines manufactured in Malaysia, primarily (24% tariff). Todaro confirmed the company expects ~20% higher build costs for its U.S. data centers and mining site infrastructure (not including machines). Machine manufacturing costs see some relief with semiconductors. The analyst also estimates that most of its prior external sales are to private miners outside the U.S.
Todaro noted Hut 8 as a large purchaser of Bitmain machines (Asia production). Recent orders hold the company over for near-term targets, but hash expansion is subject to higher machine prices. Notably, Hut 8&#8217;s Bitcoin mining infrastructure is now part of American Bitcoin, of which Eric Trump is a co-founder and CSO.
Robinhood Markets, Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HOOD#NASDAQ">HOOD</a>) has no direct exposure to tariffs besides its Gold card offering, which is manufactured by CompoSecure, Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMPO#NASDAQ">CMPO</a>). Todaro expects CompoSecure to see higher material costs for its metal cards.

Analyst Warns Tariffs Could Push US Bitcoin Mining Build Costs 20% Higher

Needham analyst Scott Berg is taking a look at the software sector following the Trump administration&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reciprocal tariffs</a> announcement on all imported products.
Much of the companies Berg covers have traded 25% lower or more over the last month. Companies are beginning to tighten their overall budgets/spending. 
Given the potential impact on margins, some software players could be impacted by increased budget scrutiny and elongated sales cycles as prospects evaluate their overall spending, driving less demand for their product/service.
However, other companies are expected to see a positive impact on demand from tariff volatility. PROS Holdings (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PRO#NYSE">PRO</a>), for example, is an AI-infused pricing optimization platform that works with airlines and business-to-business industries that are heavily manufacturing-based. These include automotive parts, chemicals, consumer goods, industrial distribution, and manufacturing. 
Tariff volatility could be a general tailwind to demand for PROS, Berg notes.

Another company to note is Global-E Online (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLBE#NASDAQ">GLBE</a>). It offers an interesting double-edged sword scenario as tariffs could benefit merchant interest or face volume headwinds as consumers have less purchasing power. 
While tariffs could serve as a headwind to cross-border purchasing, especially as the US Federal government considers the de minimus exemption an opportunity for further change, the company&#8217;s limited history shows the impact is almost negligible for several reasons. Brexit experienced minimal effect on volumes in and out of the UK. The company&#8217;s fast-growing multi-local solution is also a good example of how brands can utilize the platform to reduce their exposure.
Berg would expect a more dynamic tariff environment to be relatively net neutral to SPS Commerce, Inc&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPSC#NASDAQ">SPSC</a>) overall business. The impact on transactional items or even a tailwind should be minimal, and supplier changes should be minimal. Marketing software vendors should have minimal to no real effect. Revenue models are usually tied to the number of consumer profiles stored and marketed to, not the number of transactions or GMV volumes.
Similar to SPS Commerce, certain marketing software companies don&#8217;t have direct exposure to the number of sale transactions or GMV for these respective customers.
