Economist Peter Schiff contends that former President Donald Trump's emphasis on "America first" has ironically relegated U.S. investments to the back of the pack.
What Happened: Schiff argues that massive foreign inflows from trade surplus nations partly fueled the longstanding dominance of American stocks and bonds. Those same flows could slow or reverse, dragging down U.S. returns amid shifting trade dynamics and weaker dollar expectations.
In a detailed post on X, Schiff asserts that this trend is already emerging, pointing to diverging returns seen by European investors. Measured in euros, the S&amp;P 500's losses appear more severe than they do in dollar terms.
&#8220;So far in 2025, the S&amp;P 500 is down 8.6%. But measured in euros, the way European investors would look at it, the S&amp;P is down 16.6%,&#8221; Schiff explains.
Conversely, Schiff notes that the German DAX looks far more appealing to an American portfolio, especially as dollar weakness amplifies overseas gains.

Schiff believes foreign holdings of U.S. bonds may also dwindle, raising interest rates for American borrowers and producing even sharper negative returns for international investors.

Beyond equity and bond markets, Schiff sees trouble for the broader U.S. economy. He warns of a severe recession triggered by falling asset prices and rising consumer costs, especially if foreign investors divest from Treasuries, forcing the Federal Reserve to prop up both markets and the government's ballooning debt obligations. Should tax revenues drop while budget deficits balloon, a full-blown fiscal crisis could follow.
Ultimately, Schiff argues Americans will be forced to transition from "spenders to savers and from consumers to producers." Although he believes this shift may bring long-term benefits, he predicts significant pain for holders of U.S. financial assets in the years ahead as the cycle of heavy foreign investment winds down.

A growing number of market experts now believe the chances of a recession hitting the US economy are <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/04/44774554/analyst-says-recession-chance-higher-than-50-musks-doge-cuts-to-knock-out-gdp-were-getting-closer-to-recession">rising</a> due to the upcoming impact of tariffs, declining consumer sentiment, and spending cuts by the new administration. That said, Goldman Sachs did a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/04/44723376/goldman-sachs-scraps-recession-call-after-trumps-surprise-tariff-pause-as-wall-street-marks-strongest-day-since-2008">U-turn</a> on its call for an outright U.S. recession last week just before Trump announced a 90-day tariff pause for countries that have not retaliated against U.S. trade measures.

Trump Tariffs Have Put 'America Last' For Investors, Peter Schiff Warns Of A Financial Crisis Worse Than 2008

The native cryptocurrency of a real-world asset-focused project dramatically crashed by nearly 90% on Sunday, wiping out billions of dollars worth of investors' fortunes.
What happened: The OM token of Layer-1 blockchain MANTRA nosedived from $5.26 to $0.42 in 90 minutes in the afternoon. The sudden plunge erased a whopping $4.6 billion from the coin's market capitalization.
Moreover, the crash triggered liquidations of over $68 million for OM in the last 24 hours, <a href="https://www.coinglass.com/LiquidationData">according </a>to Coinglass.
According to Lookonchain, about 17 wallets transferred $227 worth of OM tokens to exchanges, accounting for 4.5% of the circulating supply. Two of these addresses belong to Laser Digital, a "strategic" investor in MANTRA.

MANTRA&#8217;s official X account stated that the crash was caused by &#8220;reckless liquidations&#8221; and had nothing to do with the project.
"One thing we want to be clear on: this was not our team. We are looking into it and will share more details about what happened as soon as we can," MANTRA added.
Additionally, the project's CEO, John Patrick Mullin, revealed that a "massive" forced liquidation from a large OM investor took place.

President&nbsp;Donald Trump&nbsp;commended El Salvador&#8217;s President Nayib Bukele for accepting custody of dangerous criminals, emphasizing the nations&#8217; joint efforts against terrorism ahead of their meeting at the White House on Monday.
What Happened: Trump took to Truth Social to express his anticipation of a meeting with Bukele. He praised Bukele for accepting into his nation&#8217;s custody &#8220;some of the most violent&nbsp;alien enemies of the World&nbsp;and, in particular, the United&nbsp;States.&#8221;
Trump labeled the deportees &#8220;barbarians&#8221; and thanked Bukele, whom he called &#8220;President B,&#8221; for keeping them in El Salvador&#8217;s custody.

Trump Praises Nayib Bukele For Taking In 'Violent Alien Enemies' Ahead Of Monday Meet Even As US Deports 10 More To El Salvador

U.S. stock futures rose following President Donald Trump&#8217;s decision to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44778464/trump-administration-grants-tariff-reprieve-to-tech-industry-apple-and-nvidia-among-beneficiaries">pause tariffs</a> on consumer electronics products on Sunday, after a whirlwind week for the markets.
Nasdaq Futures led the way with 1.2% gains reaching 19,036, followed by S&amp;P 500 Futures up 0.74% at 5,433, and finally Dow Jones Futures at 40,527, up 0.32%.

Japan&#8217;s Nikkei is trading up on Monday morning, by 473 points or 1.41%, with iPhone component makers Murata Manufacturing Co., TDK Corp. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TTDKY#OTC">TTDKY</a>), and chip testing equipment maker Advantest leading the charge with gains of 1.6%, 5.6%, and 4.07%, respectively.
This comes as the Asian giant is set to negotiate tariffs and a trade deal with the United States this week, with Japan&#8217;s top trade representative Ryosei Akazawa&nbsp;expected to visit the U.S. to hold talks.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) continued its descent on Monday, and is down 0.22% at 99.58 after recovering from the day&#8217;s low of 99.35. While it is still near its three-year lows, the Greenback found much-needed stability after taking a bruising over the past week.
The surprise announcement of exemptions for all electronics, including smartphones, computers, semiconductors, and their components from tariffs on Sunday prompted this rally, but uncertainties continue to loom, with the President referring to this reprieve as temporary, and said he would give more &#8220;very specific&#8221; answers on the semiconductor tariffs on Monday. 
Traders will be looking at further announcements from the White House during the course of the day, alongside important earnings releases coming from Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>) later tonight.

US Stock Futures, Nikkei Climb On Trump's Electronics Tariff Pause: iPhone Parts Makers Surge In Tokyo

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) may have <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/25/04/44780473/apple-escapes-supply-chain-crisis-as-trump-excludes-popular-electronics-from-tariffs">avoided the worst</a> of Donald Trump's new reciprocal tariffs—for now—but top analyst Ming-Chi Kuo warns that the company's supply chain could still face major disruptions in the months ahead.
What Happened: Apple has temporarily dodged steep tariffs on Chinese-made electronics, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and AirTags, following an exemption granted by Trump late Friday.
However, TF International Securities analyst Kuo says this relief may be short-lived, and Apple's response could create new challenges.
In a post on X, Kuo noted that Apple began stockpiling U.S.-bound iPhones after the Lunar New Year, which fell in late January, building up more than two months of inventory in anticipation of trade volatility.

While this move helps protect second-quarter sales, he warned it may lead to "a sharper disruption to the supply chain during the model transition compared to prior years."
He went on to add that production lines in China that assemble iPhones for the U.S. market remain idle, reinforcing Apple's plan to shift more of its iPhone manufacturing to India. However, he cautioned that the plan is "subject to change and should be closely monitored."
Kuo also flagged multiple trade risks still on the table, including a potential 20% semiconductor tariff and executive orders tied to reciprocal tariffs.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed over the weekend that current tariff exemptions for electronics are only temporary and that additional levies—possibly impacting iPhones—could be introduced within months.
&#8220;Amid the Trump administration's unpredictable tariff policies, Apple's best option—beyond ongoing talks with the White House for exemptions—is to establish sufficient iPhone production lines in India to meet U.S. market demand,&#8221; Kuo stated.

Why It Matters: Despite Apple's efforts to diversify its supply chain away from China, nearly 80% of the 77 million iPhones shipped to the U.S. last year were still manufactured there.
Earlier this month, ahead of Trump's new tariffs taking effect, Apple reportedly exported <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44706383/apple-airlifts-iphones-from-india-and-china-in-72-hour-race-to-beat-trumps-tariffs-as-stock-sinks-amid-us-china-trade-panic">600 tons of iPhones</a> — about 1.5 million units — from India to the U.S.
Amit Daryanani, an analyst at Evercore ISI, voiced relief for Apple in a Saturday note, saying, "The tariffs would have driven material cost inflation."
Previously, Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan warned that Apple could see iPhone production <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/price-target/25/04/44720209/apple-faces-up-to-90-cost-surge-on-iphones-if-us-tariffs-stick-analyst-looks-at-possible-shift-to-india-price-increase">costs surge by over 90%</a> if U.S. assembly requirements and tariffs are implemented.
