And the best part? He didn't go it alone — he brought his unemployed friend along for the million-dollar ride.
Back in 1962, Munger was still practicing law in Los Angeles when he met Al Marshall, an out-of-work oil industry worker trying to buy mineral rights at auction.&nbsp;

Munger, seeing the flaws in Marshall's strategy but liking the bones of the deal, decided to go in with him. Each put up $1,000 and bought into oil royalties through what was then a legal tax shelter known as an AB trust, which was later outlawed.
And the returns? Straight-up legendary.
"Fifty years later we were getting $100,000 a year on that investment," Munger told the crowd at the 2016 Daily Journal shareholder meeting. "The trouble with that story is that it only happened once."
He delivered it with a chuckle, but the message was clear: not every great investment is repeatable — which is exactly why you act when you spot one.
Munger touched on the story again during his final Daily Journal meeting in 2023, a full-circle moment near the end of his career, where he once more emphasized the rarity of those life-changing opportunities.

The story is backed by Janet Lowe's 2000 biography "Damn Right!," where Marshall said, "We only put up $1,000 each, and we've each probably made a half a million out of it." He added, "I'm still getting $2,000 to $3,000 a month from that," confirming the checks were still rolling in decades later.&nbsp;
That's right — from a $1,000 investment, Munger's family was still cashing royalty checks well into the 21st century. All from a single, overlooked opportunity.
Of course, Munger never sugarcoated it. "The trick in life," he told that 2016 crowd, "is when you get the one, or two, or three [big opportunities] that your fair allotment for a life is — that you've got to do something about it."

Charlie Munger Turned $1,000 Into Over $1 Million — And Made His Unemployed Friend Rich Too: 'Trouble With That Story Is It Only Happened Once'

A cold email to billionaire Mark Cuban by Aaron Levie, co-founder cloud storage and file-sharing business Box, was the catalyst for the company&#8217;s current valuation of $4.6 billion.
What Happened:&nbsp;Back in 2005, Levie, then a University of Southern California student, was on the hunt for funding for his startup. He took the initiative to send cold emails to potential investors, including Cuban.
Within a few hours, Cuban replied, suggesting a partnership on a data-hosting project. This idea later evolved, and Cuban invested $350,000 in Box without ever meeting the co-founders face-to-face. 
This investment marked a significant milestone for Box, encouraging Levie to leave college and dedicate his full attention to the company.
Levie&#8217;s pitch to Cuban was straightforward: with the cost of online data storage dropping and internet speeds increasing, there was a golden&nbsp;opportunity for a company to&nbsp;simplify secure online data storage. Despite receiving hundreds of email pitches daily, Cuban was swayed by this proposition.

"That was wild, because it happened so fast," Levie <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/19/box-co-founder-cold-email-to-mark-cuban-landed-startup-investment.html">told </a>CNBC. &#8220;Cuban's funding represented Box's breakthrough investment," he added. 
However, Cuban had a change of heart about a year after his investment due to disagreements over Box&#8217;s business model. In 2006, Box secured additional funding, and Levie used a portion of this capital to repurchase Cuban&#8217;s stake.
Despite the fallout, Cuban&#8217;s initial investment was instrumental in Box&#8217;s early growth. The company has been profitable since 2023, with a reported&nbsp;net income of $129 million&nbsp;in 2024.

What Happened: Amazon&#8217;s success and increased valuation may be attributed to Bezos&#8217;s leadership. He led the company for 27 years before stepping down as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/education/22/11/29691021/walking-away-on-top-if-you-invested-1-000-in-amazon-when-bezos-stepped-down-heres-how-much-youd" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CEO in July 2021.</a>
Bezos&#8217; leadership and business practices may be among the reasons Amazon survived the dot-com bubble and later diversified into other new sectors, such as streaming and the cloud.
A company such as Amazon likely holds many meetings with executives, employees, and potential partners. One practice Bezos did during meetings with employees was to speak last, something his current fiancée Lauren Sánchez  said was one of the best business lessons she&#8217;s learned from him.

Sánchez said living with Bezos has been like &#8220;having a master class every day.&#8221;

Why It&#8217;s Important: Bezos previously shared that changing meeting practices helped Amazon succeed and could have been &#8220;the smartest thing we ever did&#8221; at the company.
Bezos shared in 2018 that Amazon discontinued PowerPoint presentations and instead opened meetings with a 30-minute silent reading period. This gave employees time to read through a detailed memo covering the discussion topics prior to the start of the meeting.
Similar to Bezos's speech last time, these meetings would see employees share reactions to the memo before the CEO shares his thoughts.
Bezos said the silent reading helped create &#8220;the context for what will then be a good discussion.&#8221;
The former Amazon CEO said the silent reading period ensured attendees read through the notes rather than ignoring emails.
&#8220;Executives will bluff their way through the meeting as if they&#8217;ve read the memo, because we&#8217;re busy, and so you&#8217;ve got to actually carve out the time for the memo to get read.&#8221;
Bezos also recommended&nbsp;keeping meetings as short as possible once the silent reading period is done. Sanchez said Bezos told her the key was to keep meetings under an hour if possible.
CNBC&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/10/14/jeff-bezos-this-is-the-smartest-thing-we-ever-did-at-amazon.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported&nbsp;</a>that other business leaders such as&nbsp;Twitter&nbsp;co-founder and former CEO&nbsp;Jack Dorsey&nbsp;also shared a similar belief in starting meetings with a silent reading period to go over the meeting agenda.
&#8220;This practice makes time for everyone to get on the same page, allows us to work from many locations, and gets to truth/critical thinking faster,&#8221; Dorsey&nbsp;said.
The business advice from Bezos could be worth it for&nbsp;bosses and companies to consider with Amazon shares up 945% in the past 10&nbsp;years and the company now one of the largest in the world.&nbsp;

Jeff Bezos Advice On Getting True Opinions From Employees: 'Time For Everyone To Get On The Same Page'

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a stark warning over the weekend, labeling China&#8217;s potential military move against Taiwan as an &#8220;imminent&#8221; threat and encouraging Indo-Pacific nations to bolster their defenses in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/crypto/cryptocurrency/25/05/45709673/us-should-stockpile-bullets-not-bitcoin-jamie-dimon-says" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">close coordination with the United States</a>.
Delivering his remarks at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Hegseth claimed that Beijing is accelerating military preparations aimed at altering Asia&#8217;s power dynamics through force, especially toward Taiwan, which China claims but does not govern, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c071xm4x7g7o" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a> BBC.
Hegseth warned that Chinese President Xi Jinping has allegedly set 2027 as the year by which China&#8217;s military should be capable of taking Taiwan. Although this timeline is cited by U.S. officials, Beijing has not confirmed it, BBC adds.

He said China is &#8220;training for it, every day&#8221; and added, &#8221;&nbsp;The threat China poses is real. And it could be imminent. We hope not but certainly could be,&#8221; BBC quoted Hegseth.
China responded sharply, calling the U.S. the region&#8217;s &#8220;biggest troublemaker.&#8221;
In a Facebook post, its embassy in Singapore accused Hegseth of stoking confrontation and distorting China&#8217;s intentions, citing America&#8217;s military activity in the South China Sea as destabilizing, the report adds.
Hegseth pressed Asian partners to significantly increase military investment, referencing Europe&#8217;s rising defense budgets in response to Russian aggression. &#8220;Europe is stepping up,&#8221; he said.
He criticized allies for relying too heavily on U.S. protection and urged them to become &#8220;partners, not dependents.&#8221;
Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), also in attendance, criticized Hegseth&#8217;s speech as patronizing and said it strayed from core American values like human rights and international law.
She said, &#8220;We need to stand with our allies, work together, and send the message that America is not asking people to choose between the PRC (People&#8217;s Republic of China) and us,&#8221; BBC quoted Duckworth.
While China scaled back its involvement in the summit—sending a low-level delegation and canceling a key speech—U.S. officials said many Asian governments welcomed the firm stance on Beijing.
Still, analysts cautioned that while America&#8217;s message may resonate, regional compliance remains uncertain.

Hegseth Urges Asia To Arm Up as China Eyes Taiwan

Joe Rogan and British comedian Jimmy Carr held nothing back in their latest conversation on &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r63cwSWbFME">The Joe Rogan Experience</a>,&#8221; tackling outrage culture, taxes, and what they see as government mismanagement.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Victimhood Over Talent?</h2>
Rogan and Carr criticized the modern trend of gaining attention through outrage or victimhood instead of talent or effort.
&#8220;This is a society that rewards outrage and that coddles people for the most preposterous beliefs,&#8221; Rogan said. &#8220;It's a weird society of social media and the amount of attention you can generate.&#8221;

Carr referenced a bit from comedian Chris Rock, saying there are three ways to get attention: You could be brilliant, infamous, or a victim.&nbsp;
Carr argued that the difference between ambition and entitlement comes down to responsibility. &#8220;If you want to do something about it, that's ambition. If you think that's someone else's problem, that's entitlement,&#8221; he said.&nbsp;
He said he has empathy for people dealt a tough hand but believes in empowering them to play those cards as best they can.

One of the most passionate parts of the episode came when Rogan slammed the idea of simply <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/08/40408996/jamie-dimon-supports-warren-buffett-rule-of-taxing-the-rich-he-says-it-will-fix-americas-debt-proble">taxing the rich to fix America's problems</a>.
&#8220;What are you going to do? You're going to enrich [the government],&#8221; Rogan said. &#8220;They're just going to get bigger and stronger and have even more power&#8230; It's not going to help you if they tax rich people.&#8221;
&#8220;Are the poor people going to get that money? No. Are their services going to improve? No, you&#8217;re just going to get more government,&#8221; he continued.
Then Rogan hit on what he sees as the real issue: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/05/45597839/elon-musk-wants-the-us-government-to-hang-up-the-phone-government-is-wasting-about-100-million-per-y">government waste and mismanagement</a>. &#8220;Figure out what to do with the money they already get from everybody,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And you&#8217;re not doing a good job with it. That&#8217;s the problem, the problem isn&#8217;t that the rich people aren&#8217;t paying their taxes.&#8221;
Carr, who faced his own tax scandal in 2012, joked that you know you&#8217;re in real trouble when &#8220;the prime minister of the country that you live in breaks off from the G20 summit to come out and do a press conference where he talks about nothing other than your personal tax affairs.&#8221;
&#8220;It was tax avoidance, not tax evasion,&#8221; Carr clarified. &#8220;There's a difference, and the difference is about 18 months in prison.&#8221;

Carr pointed to Scandinavian countries like Norway and Denmark as examples where high taxes actually deliver real public services, without much public resentment. Rogan responded that these are smaller, more manageable societies.
&#8220;When you scale that to like hundreds of millions of people, things get really weird,&#8221; Rogan said.
Carr also praised the European country of Estonia for offering a free, English-language medical school to attract foreign students. The idea behind it, as he says, is that some will stay, work, and contribute to the local economy.

Tesla (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) CEO Elon Musk is doubling down on his belief that artificial intelligence and robotics will reshape the global economy—and soon.
&#8220;Accelerating GDP growth is essential,&#8221; Musk <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1925977691162816639">posted on X</a> on May 23. He claimed that the U.S. government&#8217;s overspending could result in a financial crisis unless there&#8217;s a massive jump in productivity. He did, however, mention that the Department of Government Efficiency &#8220;has and will do great work to postpone the day of bankruptcy of America.&#8221;

The X post came in <a href="https://x.com/BarrettHoffarth/status/1925595695610044438">response</a> to someone wondering whether &#8220;Elon has somewhat moved away from politics in order to accelerate GDP growth with humanoid robots&#8221; after another person <a href="https://x.com/farzyness/status/1925593927232442488">wrote</a> that &#8220;Given the disastrous GOP bill, the only chance the US has is explosive GDP growth.&#8221;
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Musk's Timeline: AI And Robots Impact In 1 To 5 Years</h2>
When asked how soon humanoid robots could start affecting &#8220;the GDP of any country,&#8221; Musk replied, &#8220;4 to 5 years.&#8221; He added that &#8220;robot cars&#8221; using Tesla&#8217;s Full Self-Driving technology, could have a &#8220;noticeable effect&#8221; within one to two years.
In an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDREZmpkIz8">interview</a> with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in March, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/25/03/44526637/elon-musk-says-ai-will-be-smarter-in-10-years-than-humans-who-will-have-a-much-higher-standard-of-living">Musk said that within 10 years</a>, &#8220;AI could probably do anything better than the human can cognitively,&#8221; and predicted a future where humanoid robots are as common as personal assistants. &#8220;Ultimately, there will be tens of billions,&#8221; he said.
He also predicted that 90% of all miles driven could be autonomous within a decade. &#8220;Goods and services will become close to free,&#8221; Musk told Cruz. &#8220;It&#8217;s not that people will have a lower standard of living, they&#8217;ll have actually a much higher standard of living.&#8221;

Earlier this month, Musk <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45400104/elon-musk-says-mohammed-bin-salman-and-trump-were-impressed-with-tesla-optimus-as-the-humanoid-robot-danced-to-ymca">showcased Tesla&#8217;s Optimus humanoid robots</a> to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and President Donald Trump during a demonstration in Riyadh. The robots even danced to &#8220;YMCA.&#8221;
&#8220;I think they were very impressed,&#8221; Musk said at a Saudi economic forum. He also joked that one of the robots performed the &#8220;Trump dance.&#8221;
Musk envisions a world where humanoid robots are everywhere, calling them personal versions of &#8220;Star Wars&#8221; robots C-3PO or R2-D2. He believes robotics could create an economy &#8220;10 times the size of the current global economy&#8221; and result in &#8220;universal high income.&#8221;
Still, challenges remain. When a language model summarizes a financial report, recommends a treatment, or writes a poem, researchers still can't explain why it made certain choices, according to Amodei,. We have no idea why it makes certain choices—and that is precisely the problem. This interpretability gap blocks AI from being trusted in areas like healthcare and defense.
The post, &#8220;The Urgency of Interpretability,&#8221; compares today's AI progress to past tech revolutions—but without the benefit of reliable engineering models. Amodei argued that artificial general intelligence will arrive by 2026 or 2027, as some predict, "we need a microscope into these models now."
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Stress Tests Are Revealing Cracks</h2>
Anthropic has already started prototyping that microscope. In a <a href="https://assets.anthropic.com/m/317564659027fb33/original/Auditing-Language-Models-for-Hidden-Objectives.pdf">technical report</a>, the company deliberately embedded a misalignment into one of its models—essentially a secret instruction to behave incorrectly—and challenged internal teams to detect the issue.&nbsp;

According to the company, three of four "blue teams" found the planted flaw. Some used neural dashboards and interpretability tools to do it, suggesting real-time AI audits could soon be possible.
That experiment showed early success in catching misbehavior before it hits end users—a huge leap for safety.

Meanwhile, Washington is boosting oversight. In a wide-ranging conversation with David Friedberg, billionaire investor Ray Dalio compared today's AI investment <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/01/42995814/billionaire-investor-who-predicted-the-dot-com-crash-25-years-ago-warns-of-another-market-storm-brewing-in-the-us">frenzy to the dot-com bubble</a>, warning that overhyped assets, rising interest rates and global tech tensions could spell trouble for unprepared investors.
What Happened: Speaking with Friedberg on the All-In podcast earlier this year, Dalio underscored the risks of blindly investing in hot sectors like artificial intelligence without regard to valuation or macroeconomic conditions.
"This looks quite a lot like 1998 or '99," Dalio said, referencing the peak of the dot-com era. "A great company that gets expensive is much worse than a bad company that's really cheap."

While both Friedberg and Dalio agreed that investing in productivity, such as AI, robotics and manufacturing, makes long-term sense, Dalio warned that prices and global competition cannot be ignored.&nbsp;
"The AI war… It's a war that no country can lose because it's more important than profits," he said, highlighting the strategic <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/25/04/44892275/eric-schmidt-warns-china-is-going-to-win-ai-race-unless-washington-fights-with-funding-and-instills-american-values-at-the-core">urgency in the U.S.–China tech race</a>.
Dalio also raised concerns about market concentration and herd behavior. "The world is so leverage long," he said, referring to investors piling into similar bets with borrowed money. "You have to pay attention to correlation."
He stressed the importance of uncorrelated assets and geographic diversification. "That's why when I look at something like gold, it's interesting… it reduces the risk of the portfolio," he added.

ETFs This Week: Markets Whipsaw On Nvidia, Fed, And China—5 Funds That Outperformed

Robert Reich, who served as labor secretary under President Bill Clinton, called out what he sees as a glaring contradiction in corporate America: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/05/45127511/ceo-pay-surges-50-since-2019-as-worker-wages-stall-oxfam-calls-for-75-tax-on-super-rich-ahead-of-international-workers-day">skyrocketing CEO pay</a> alongside stagnant wages for everyday workers.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Growing Pay Divide</h2>
Reich&#8217;s post drew on data from a 2024 <a href="https://www.epi.org/publication/ceo-pay-in-2023/">report</a> by the Economic Policy Institute, which shows that while CEO compensation dipped in 2023, the long-term trend is unmistakable: executive pay has exploded over the last four decades.
In 2023, CEOs at the top 350 U.S. firms earned 290 times more than the average worker. That's a huge jump from 1965, when the ratio was just 21 to one.
The report also found that CEO compensation has increased far faster than even the earnings of the top 0.1% of wage earners, indicating it&#8217;s not just about market competition for talent. &#8220;CEO compensation reflects substantial &#8216;rents&#8217; (income in excess of actual productivity),&#8221; the authors wrote.

One reason for this, the report says, is that CEOs have more sway over their pay than most workers do. Their compensation is heavily tied to stock performance and negotiated with corporate boards that often lack independence. In 2023, stock-related pay made up 77.6% of total CEO compensation.
Meanwhile, average worker pay has only seen a modest increase, just 24% since 1978, despite a 74.8% rise in overall productivity during that time.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Policy Proposals to Close the Gap</h2>
The EPI report says this imbalance is a key driver of income inequality. &#8220;If very high earners hadn&#8217;t pulled away so dramatically, there would be room for broader-based wage growth for the rest of the workforce,&#8221; it notes.

To rein in executive pay, the report suggests policies such as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/05/45317302/trump-renews-effort-to-hike-taxes-on-wealthy-americans-holds-talks-with-mike-johnson-report">raising taxes on top incomes</a>, tying corporate tax rates to CEO-to-worker pay ratios, and giving shareholders more power to approve or reject executive compensation packages.
Reich's post comes amid broader conversations about wage fairness, labor strikes, and inflation. His question touches a nerve in today's economy: why is there always money for the top, but not for the base?

The company missed analyst estimates for earnings per share. Bernstein initiated coverage on the stock with an Outperform rating shortly after financial results. CRH CEO Jim Mintern said the first quarter results showed strength and highlighted the company's differentiated strategy and recent acquisitions.
"Although the first quarter is typically the seasonally least significant period for our business, we are encouraged by the continued strength of underlying demand across our key markets," Mintern said.

The company beat analyst estimates for both revenue and earnings per share in the first quarter with revenue up 26% year-over-year. The company ended the quarter with remaining performance obligations of $6.7 billion, up 34% year-over-year. The company also ended the quarter with 606 customers that have trailing 12-month product revenue of more than $1 million. Investors and analysts were impressed with the report and guidance with a large number of analysts <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/SNOW/analyst-ratings">raising their price targets</a> after the report. Along with earnings, Snowflake also announced a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/05/45623498/snowflakes-ai-driven-insights-to-power-la28-olympic-and-paralympic-games">three-year partnership</a> to be the Official Data Collaboration Provider of the 2028 Olympics and Paralympic Games and Team USA. Snowflake stock was up over 3% on the week with shares now up over 45% in the last year.

Former President Barack Obama once said that he believes achieving success often requires sacrificing <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/05/38635370/meta-or-google-which-tech-giant-offers-better-work-life-balance-heres-what-an-ex-product-manager-who">work-life balance</a>, but says it's possible to restore that balance over time.
What Happened: Speaking on The Pivot Podcast in October last year, Obama explained that high achievement in any field—whether politics, business, or sports—inevitably requires intense, unbalanced effort at times, <a href="https://fortune.com/2025/05/30/former-president-barack-obama-work-life-balance-not-real-successful-people-career-grind/">reported</a> Fortune.
&#8220;If you want to be excellent at anything—sports, music, business, politics—there's going to be times of your life when you're out of balance, where you're just working and you're single-minded," Obama said.
He recalled the demanding 18-month grind of his first presidential campaign, during which his wife Michelle Obama carried much of the family burden alone while also working full-time.

After taking office, Obama made a personal rule to have dinner every night at 6:30 p.m. with Michelle and their daughters, even if he had to return to work later. "They ground you and give you perspective, and over time, that makes you better."
Obama also stressed the importance of mutual support in relationships. "You can have it all—but you can't have it all at once," he said.
