ProShares Short S&P500

The Fund invests in financial instruments that ProShare Advisors believes, in combination, should produce daily returns consistent with the Daily Target. The Index is designed to measure the performance of the 500 largest companies listed and domiciled in the U.S. The top 500 companies based on market capitalization are included in the Index. These companies are then weighted based on market capitalization. The Indexs composition and the assigned weights are reevaluated every September with additional weight adjustments in March, June, and December. The Index is constructed and maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices LLC.

The stock market just got a fresh jolt of turbulence, and traders are buckling up for more. Monday's rollercoaster session saw the S&amp;P 500 index wipe out a staggering $1.5 trillion in value as trade war fears reignited. 
ETFs tracking the index closed lower: the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) closed lower by 1.75% while the Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) and the iShares Core S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IVV#NYSE">IVV</a>) were down 1.72% on Monday close.

With tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China ramping up, volatility is officially back in business. The VIX has surged over 33% over the past month:

But for investors, chaos breeds opportunity &#8211; if you know how to play it.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. The VIX Is Screaming &#8211; Use It</h2>
The Cboe Volatility Index ($VIX) is Wall Street's fear gauge, and when it spikes, traders take notice. With uncertainty surging, options-based strategies become lucrative.

Mastercard Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MA#NYSE">MA</a>): The credit card company saw increased interest from investors likely related to the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/m-a/24/02/37204534/capital-one-set-to-acquire-discover-in-landmark-35-3b-deal">$35 billion takeover of</a> Discover Financial Services (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DFS#NYSE">DFS</a>) announced by Capital One Financial Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COF#NYSE">COF</a>). 
The acquisition could cause headwinds for Mastercard and Visa Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/V#NYSE">V</a>), which are leaders in the credit card market. Capital One uses Visa and Mastercard for its credit cards and recently renewed partnerships. After the partnerships end, Capital One could transition to Discover and away from Visa and Mastercard. 
Visa shares also saw increased interest from Benzinga readers according to proprietary data.

Lululemon Athletica Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LULU#NASDAQ">LULU</a>): The apparel company joins the index with increased interest from readers likely due to a ratings update from Needham. The Buy rating and the price target of $525 were reiterated by Needham and come in ahead of the recent price of $455 and the 52-week high of $516.39.
The company is expected to report fourth-quarter financial results in March. In<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/23/12/36143318/lululemon-q3-earnings-overview-eps-beat-revenue-beat-comps-up-13-1b-buyback-and-more"> the third quarter</a>, Lululemon beat Street consensus estimates for both revenue and earnings per share. The company said it was pleased with the early performance of the holiday season in the fourth quarter. Shares of the apparel company are up over 40% in the past year, but remain down around 11% year-to-date in 2024.
Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMCI#NASDAQ">SMCI</a>): The technology company is carried over from last week&#8217;s Stock Whisper Index. Super Micro Computer is one of the fastest-gaining stocks in recent weeks and shares are up over 1,000% in the past year. 
Analysts have been sharing increased price targets as the stock continues higher. After a pullback from highs, Super Micro shares saw a +33% gain on Thursday, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/02/37262009/whats-going-on-with-super-micro-computer-stock-thursday">likely due to peer company</a> NVIDIA Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) reporting strong fourth-quarter earnings and seeing shares up. Super Micro recently announced that it is expanding its portfolio of AI solutions.
Adobe Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ADBE#NASDAQ">ADBE</a>): The content creation company saw shares fall early in the week potentially related to ChatGPT parent OpenAI <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/02/37185214/here-are-some-of-the-most-stunning-videos-from-openais-new-sora-video-tool">releasing teaser trailers</a> for is text-to-video tool Sora. The release of Sora expands the artificial intelligence capabilities that users of OpenAI can have at their fingertips. 
Several Adobe products are used by people to create images and videos and the new OpenAI tools may see users move over to the rival. Adobe reports first-quarter financial results in mid-March and may be asked for more details on the potential competition by analysts.
Short S&amp;P 500 ETFs: When looking at the proprietary data used to construct the Stock Whisper Index, ETFs also show up many times with increased interest from readers. ETFs are generally left off the index unless something big jumps out, which is the case this week with two (Benzinga is giving you a bonus Stock Whisper pick this week) S&amp;P 500 inverse ETFs seeing elevated interest. 
The ProShares UltraShort S&amp;P 500 (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SDS#NYSE">SDS</a>) and ProShares Short S&amp;P 500 (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SH#NYSE">SH</a>) inverse ETFs both saw increased interest. The funds seek to offer performance that is the inverse of the S&amp;P 500 index or in the case of the UltraShort ETF, two times the performance of the S&amp;P 500.
Increased interest in the inverse S&amp;P 500 indexes comes as the index and the tracking ETFs like the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>)<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/02/37020083/s-p-500-hits-5-000-milestone-yet-concerns-of-overvaluation-versus-its-equal-weight-counterpart-m"> hit record highs </a>and the index passed the 5,000 milestone. 
Benzinga previously shared that the performance of the Magnificent 7 stocks has made up a large portion of the S&amp;P 500 Index gains and the performance of the index is widely outpacing S&amp;P 500 ETFs that are equally weighted. Investors may think that a pullback in the S&amp;P 500 is coming given the increased interest in inverse ETFs.

The latest FX &amp; Rates Survey from Bank of America reveals that bond investors are hunting for long-dated Treasuries, put options on the stock market, and long positions in the Japanese Yen (JPY) versus high-beta currencies to shield themselves from the dangers connected with the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/23/05/32362327/yellen-warns-of-catastrophe-if-debt-ceiling-impasse-continues-need-to-see-congress-committed-to-payi" target="_blank">U.S. debt limit crisis.</a>
Long-duration bets on U.S. treasuries were favored by 28% of the 73 global fixed-income investors polled by Bank of America, followed by stock puts at 26% and the long JPY strategy at 21%.

&ldquo;The investment objective of the AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear ETF is capital appreciation through short sales of domestically traded equity securities,&rdquo; the company&rsquo;s website says. &ldquo;In selecting short positions, the Fund seeks to identify securities with low earnings quality or aggressive accounting which may be intended on the part of company management to mask operational deterioration and bolster the reported earnings per share over a short time period.&rdquo;
AdvisorShares says the ETF could be used as a tool in a long/short strategy where investors go long on an index ETF and go long HDGE giving them short exposure as well.
The fund invests in companies with future catalysts that could drive stock prices lower. The fund seeks to hold between 20 to 75 short positions averaging in size of 2% to 7% each.
Among the current top ten holdings of the ETF are Universal Display (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/oled#NASDAQ">OLED</a>), OneMain Holdings (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/omf#NYSE">OMF</a>), Equinix (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/eqix#NASDAQ">EQIX</a>), DoorDash Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/dash#NYSE">DASH</a>) and Cirrus Logic (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/crus#NASDAQ">CRUS</a>).
The current makeup of the ETF is 45.7% small cap stocks, 36.5% mid-cap stocks and 17.8% large cap stocks.
Why It&rsquo;s Important: While members of Congress are allowed to buy and sell stocks, including taking short positions, as long as they properly disclose, this could be a bad take for the public.
The<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/07/28252561/could-nancy-pelosi-and-husband-be-banned-from-stock-trading-heres-what-could-be-coming-in-august"> push to ban members </a>of U.S. Congress from buying and selling stocks, options and ETFs has risen in recent years. Over the last two years, members of Congress have been buying and selling <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/02/25337519/10-best-stock-traders-in-congress-in-2021-spoiler-nancy-pelosi-isnt-no-1">stocks linked </a>to committees they serve on or based on new policies or contracts announced by the U.S. government.
Carper, who previously served as Delaware governor from 1993 to 2001, has been a U.S. Senator since 2001. He has actively been <a href="https://sec.report/Senate-Stock-Disclosures">betting </a>against the performance of the U.S. stock market in 2022.
As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Carper could be privy to information of what the U.S. government plans to do to fight high inflation and keep the country out of a recession.
Along with the new position in the Ranger Equity Bear Bear ETF, Carper <a href="https://unusualwhales.com/politics/profile/Thomas%20R%20Carper">previously </a>held shares of the ProShares Short QQQ (ARCA:PSQ), which bets against the performance of the Nasdaq 100, as tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/qqq#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>).
Carper also previously held shares of the ProShares Short S&amp;P 500 (ARCA:SH), which shorts the S&amp;P 500, a key market index tracked with the S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (ARCA:SPY).
The U.S. Senator holds long positions in several stocks, so the new position could be a hedge as it was meant or a trust that AdvisorShares has found companies that will likely have earnings pressure going forward.
News of Carper&rsquo;s bets against the U.S. stock market could continue to put pressure on a ban of members of Congress to be able to trade stocks.

How This US Senator, Finance Committee Member Is Betting Against The Stock Market

If history is a guide, there&rsquo;s a chance that the recent selloff in the market may have just gotten started. As you can see on the below chart of the Dow Jones Industrial Average going back to 1897, the current move lower is barely visible.
There have been many bear markets that lasted for many months or even years.

BZ Chart Of The Day: The Selling Just May Be Getting Started

With the extreme volatility of the&nbsp;S&amp;P 500&#39;s 12.1% 2022 correction, many investors are worried about where the stock market is headed next.
For traders that believe the recent dip is merely the beginning of a much larger downturn, here are some potential ways to profit from a market downturn.
<h3>Short Sell Individual Stocks</h3>
There are two inherent benefits to owning shares of stock.
One is that the market, volatile as it may be, has a general upward trend over time because of the general growth of the economy. The other advantage to owning shares of stock is that the maximum risk is capped at a 100% loss, while the reward is potentially limitless.
When short selling a stock, these two advantages are flipped to disadvantages.
The best-case scenario, improbable as it may be, would be a 100-percent gain from short-selling a stock that eventually goes to zero. However, if the share price of a shorted stock doubles or triples, losses can amount to multiples of the size of the initial short position.

Because of the nature of their business models,&nbsp;the bottom lines of online brokerages such as&nbsp;Charles Schwab Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/schw#NYSE">SCHW</a>), Robinhood Markets Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/hood#NASDAQ">HOOD</a>) and Interactive Brokers Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ibkr#NASDAQ">IBKR</a>)&nbsp;tend to grow and shrink right along with the overall market, so these stocks might make good candidates for short sale during a pullback.
<h3>Buy Put Options</h3>
If the idea of capping your gains at 100% while still allowing for the possibility of unlimited losses does not seem appealing, another approach is to buy put options. Put options limit losses to 100% while allowing gains of much greater than 100%.
The disadvantage of buying put options is that timing is critical. Not only does the price of the underlying stock need to fall for a put option to be profitable, but it must also fall before the put&#39;s expiration date. The further into the future the option expiration date is, the more expensive the time-related option premium.
<h3>Buy Precious Metals</h3>
One indirect way to bet against the market is to bet on something that investors tend to flock to when they are scared: <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/topic/gold">gold</a>. One of the easiest ways to invest in gold without needing a treasure chest buried in the backyard is to buy shares of the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/gld#NYSE">GLD</a>).
Any time there is economic uncertainty, the price of gold tends to spike because investors view gold as something that holds intrinsic value. However, the problem with betting on a rise in gold prices during a market downturn is that the inverse correlation between gold prices and the stock market is very loose. In fact, sometimes there is even a positive correlation between the S&amp;P 500 and the price of gold.
<h3>Buy An Inverse ETF</h3>
Inverse <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/topic/etfs">ETFs</a> are funds comprised of stocks and derivatives that are intended to trade inversely to a particular target. Many inverse ETFs are meant to trade inversely to the broad market, such as ProShares Short S&amp;P 500 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sh#NYSE">SH</a>).
The advantages to owning an inverse ETF include diversification, no margin requirement, no time constraints or time premiums, and a correlation to the overall market that is nearly exactly inverse. However, even these inverse ETFs do not provide perfect inverse correlation, and the imperfect correlation can compound over time.

Although each choice has its advantages and disadvantages, investors that believe the worst is yet to come for the stock market certainly have plenty of choices for betting on further downside.

4 Ways To Profit Off A Falling Stock Market

There&#39;s a chance&nbsp;the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/broad-u-s-equity-etfs/21/09/22932111/is-the-spy-rally-finally-about-to-end">stock market rally is over</a> and the long-awaited correction is here. If so, astute investors can hedge their portfolios or even profit from a market sell-off.
This can be done with inverse ETFs. These ETFs are designed to move in the opposite direction of the market. One of them is the ProShares Short S&amp;P500 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/sh#NYSE">SH</a>).

Many analysts are predicting there will soon be a correction in the market. They cite the high levels of inflation and the problems employers are having highering employees.

The market is trading close to all-time highs and many analysts are expecting a correction or sell-off over the next few weeks.
They argue that the market has come too far. Some consolidation is overdue and would be natural.
Retail investors can protect themselves against market downturns by using inverse ETFs. These ETFs move in the opposite direction as the market. If the market goes down, they will move higher.
They include the ProShares Short S&amp;P 500 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/sh#NYSE">SH</a>) and the Direxion Daily S&amp;P 500 Bear 3X Shares (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/spxs#NYSE">SPXS</a>).
SH is designed to move in the opposite direction as the S&amp;P 500 Index. If the index is down by 1%, SH should rise by about the same amount.

2 ETFs For A Potential Market Sell-Off

If the market goes down, there&#39;s an easy way to profit.
Many investors think the market is overvalued and they may be correct. At 2.9, the price to sales ratio of the S&amp;P 500 is the highest that it has been in at least two decades. By this measure at least, the market is overvalued.
Bearish investors should consider inverse ETFs as a way to protect themselves from, and even profit, if the market heads lower. These ETFs use complicated strategies to inversely mirror the market, but they trade as regular ETFs or stocks. This means average investors don&rsquo;t need to be concerned with the mechanics.

3 ETFs That Will Go Up If The Market Goes Down

Inverse ETFs move in the opposite direction as the market. They include the ProShares Short Dow 30 ETF (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/dog#NASDAQ">DOG</a>), the ProShares Short S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/sh#NYSE">SH</a>), and the Direxion Daily Small Cap Bear 3X Shares ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tza#NYSE">TZA</a>).
Some investors believe the stock market will go lower, but they may not want to use complicated options strategies to protect their portfolios. These investors could consider using inverse ETFs as a way to hedge themselves.

The most widely cited index in the media is the Dow Jones Industrial Average. This index has been calculated and reported on since 1896. Its members include 30 large and well-known companies.
The ProShares Short Dow 30 ETF moves in the opposite direction of the Dow Jones. If the Dow&nbsp;is down by 1%, this ETF should rise by 1%.

The S&amp;P 500 Index is also commonly cited by the media.
This Index is much more broad-based than the Dow. The Dow is made up of 30 stocks, while the S&amp;P 500 consists of approximately 500 stocks.
The ProShares Short S&amp;P 500 ETF&nbsp;moves in the opposite direction as the S&amp;P 500 Index. If the index falls 5%, this ETF should appreciate by about 5%.

The Direxion Daily Small Cap Bear 3X Shares ETF is much more volatile than DOG and SH. It&#39;s structured to move three times inversely to the Russell 2000 Index, an&nbsp;index that consists of roughly 2,000 small-cap companies.
These small-cap stocks tend to be more volatile than the larger company stocks in the other indices. If the Russell 2000 drops by 1%, this ETF will gain about 3%.

3 ETFs To Buy If You're Bearish

With the present market volatility, some investors may want to consider hedging their portfolios. One way to do that is to short stocks.&nbsp;
The problem with shorting stocks outright is the unlimited risk associated with it. Because stocks can theoretically go up forever, betting against them makes the amount you can lose unlimited. Most brokers also require a margin account in order to short stocks, which is something not all retail traders have access to.&nbsp;
There are however, other ways to bet against the market. One of the most popular ways to do that is with inverse ETFs.&nbsp;
<h3>Inverse ETFs</h3>
One risk to shorting has been eliminated with the creation of certain inverse ETFs. Inverse ETFs are not short individual stocks; they are long portfolios of securities structured to perform in an inverse direction to benchmarks. Derivatives and other securities are used, including swap agreements. Some of these ETFs do not use benchmarks to short against, but rather create their own models to perform in an inverse manner.&nbsp;
Suppose you thought the overall market will decline in the short term. One way to hedge your portfolio to prepare for that would be to buy the ProShares Short S&amp;P 500 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/sh#NYSE">SH</a>), which attempts to return the daily investment result that is the inverse of the S&amp;P 500 Index performance. If the S&amp;P 500 Index goes up one percent in a day, the daily goal of SH is to decline by one percent on that day.&nbsp;
<h3>Emphasis On Daily Returns</h3>
Maybe the biggest difference between sophisticated investors and retail investors regarding inverse ETFs is that experienced investors understand how different the performance of a daily return versus a non-daily return can be on a longer than one-day basis. Before trading an inverse ETF, you need to understand that an inverse ETF&rsquo;s asset base will be reset on a daily basis.&nbsp;
An example is to suppose that you think the tech sector is going to decline, and you want to short the sector for a big move. So, you buy the ProShares Short QQQ ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/psq#NYSE">PSQ</a>) and plan to hold it for more than one day. Even if you&rsquo;re right, and QQQ declines, PSQ will match the inverse of QQQ&rsquo;s performance for only one day. The second day and third day, and every day after that, QQQ and PSQ will travel in an inverse direction, but they will not necessarily not match each other.&nbsp;
There are several factors that cause inverse ETF&rsquo;s to not return the exact opposite performance of an index. One of these is costs: inverse ETFs usually have higher expense ratios, sometimes much higher, than regular ETFs. Some inverse ETFs have expense ratios of one percent or more, which cuts down on the return of inverse ETFs.&nbsp;
Another factor contributing to performance difference is the compounding effect. After each trading day, inverse ETF&rsquo;s are reset, and the gain or loss for the next trading day is based on the principal reset principal price. This is not true of the index, which is not reset; the principal amount of the index includes factors such as its prior gains or losses, dividends, and other earnings, and expenses, which increases and reduces the index principal value. &nbsp;&nbsp;
Among the other factors differentiating the price performance between an index and its inverse ETF performance for more than one day is correlation risk; some of the companies in an index might be hard to trade, increasing trading costs. This is a daily potential problem since an inverse ETF rebalances each trading day.
<h3>Actively managed inverse ETFs. &nbsp;</h3>
There are inverse ETFs offered for a wide variety of markets, such as sectors, countries, or asset classes. Most inverse ETFs are passively managed, meaning they track an index. However some inverse ETFs are actively managed, that is they&rsquo;re managed by a team that makes changes according to their investment model. In actively managed portfolios, managers seek out the asset classes that are most prone to decline. This strategy is different than a benchmark inverse ETF. With actively managed inverse ETFs, the ETF may not go up when the market is declining because there is no benchmark to tie its market performance to. Instead, the ETF maker decides which sectors to short according to its methodology. All the major indexes might go down, for example, and an actively managed inverse ETF can decline. Of course, the adverse can also happen where actively managed inverse ETFs can advance when the market goes up.
When used correctly, inverse ETFs can be a great way to hedge your portfolio and bet on the downside. For any investor who understands the risks and benefits of using leverage, these products can provide a tactical way to protect your investments and even profit in the event of a downturn.&nbsp;
