The Fund invests in financial instruments that ProShare Advisors believes, in combination, should produce daily returns consistent with the Daily Target. The Index is designed to measure the performance of U.S. companies in the semiconductors subsector. The semiconductor subsector includes producers and distributors of semiconductors and other integrated chips, including other products related to the semiconductor industry, such as semiconductor capital equipment and motherboards. U.S. companies in this sub-sector are selected and then weighted based on market capitalization. The Indexs composition and the assigned weights are reevaluated every September with additional weight adjustments occurring in March, June and December.

Nvidia (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) GTC kicks off today, Mar. 18, and lays the groundwork for another installment of AI and semiconductor-fueled fervor. 
If past is prologue, this could translate to new <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">momentum for some ETFs</a>.

Why This Time Could Be Different—Or Not
This year&#8217;s GTC is a big deal not only for Nvidia but also other tech giants like Broadcom (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>), Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>), and heavy hitters like Vistra (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VST#NYSE">VST</a>). Even quantum computing equities like D-Wave Quantum (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QBTS#NYSE">QBTS</a>) may experience some aftershocks.
One fascinating aspect is the amount of sessions Nvidia is conducting in Chinese, with some heavy-hitters like Baidu (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BIDU#NASDAQ">BIDU</a>), Alibaba (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>) Cloud, and ByteDance, according to TechCrunch. Missing from the lineup, however, is DeepSeek, the Chinese AI company that shook Nvidia&#8217;s stock this spring.
DeepSeek&#8217;s meteoric growth resulted in government attention, with reports even suggesting some employees were put under travel bans. The lack of DeepSeek at GTC could reinforce the geopolitical overhang over the AI sector—another influence that could move ETFs in the weeks ahead.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What To Watch Post-GTC</h2>
Last GTC revealed Nvidia&#8217;s Blackwell GPUs, and another significant one is likely to come this time. That may portend a new rally in semiconductor ETFs—but also increased volatility.
In addition, with the large Chinese companies showcasing at GTC, investor sentiment regarding U.S.-China AI rivalry may affect ETF performance.
Traders may again mob funds such as NVDD, SSG, and SOXS to bet on both bullish and bearish trends in semiconductors if the last twelve months are anything to go by.
Nvidia&#8217;s GTC has a history of shaping AI and semiconductor markets. Whether it&#8217;s another leg higher or a wave of profit-taking, ETFs that rode last year&#8217;s wave of success could again be the vehicle of choice for traders as they navigate the post-GTC world.

<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/semiconductors" rel="noreferrer noopener">Semiconductor chipmaker</a> Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>) ended collaboration with Singapore&#8217;s PowerAIR after discovering a Taiwan Semiconductor chip&nbsp;in a Huawei Technologies artificial intelligence processor, SCMP <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/tech-war/article/3294199/tsmc-cuts-ties-singapore-firm-over-chip-found-huawei-processor-sources" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>.
In 2024, the Taiwanese contract chipmaker <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42644888/biden-administration-targets-chinese-firm-over-taiwan-semiconductor-chip-found-in-huawei-tech" rel="noreferrer noopener">suspended shipments to</a> China&#8217;s&nbsp;chip designing firm Sophgo after a chip it ordered from the Taiwanese chipmaker matched with one on Huawei&#8217;s Ascend 910B multi-chip system.
Washington imposed sanctions on Chinese smartphone giant Huawei in 2020, citing national security threats.

The update coincides with reports indicating Nvidia and other chipmakers are susceptible to potential <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/01/42897081/nvidia-and-ai-chip-stocks-brace-for-impact-as-biden-administration-considers-new-china-export-ban-report" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. AI chip sanctions</a> to China. Washington&#8217;s new curbs could restrict Nvidia&#8217;s AI chip shipments, with three-tier export rules favoring allies like Taiwan and barring Tier 3 nations like China.
Taiwan Semiconductor stock surged over 105% in the last 12 months, gaining prominence by manufacturing AI chips for Nvidia Corp GPUs and chips for Apple Inc smartphones.
Taiwan Semiconductor reported <a href="https://pr.tsmc.com/english/news/3198" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consolidated revenue of</a> 2.89 trillion New Taiwan dollars between January and December 2024 (up by 33.9% year-on-year). It reported a <a href="https://pr.tsmc.com/english/news/3177" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consolidated revenue of</a> 2.03 trillion New Taiwan dollars between January and September 2024. 
Therefore, it implies that the chipmaker reported a consolidated revenue of 868.46 billion New Taiwan dollars ($26.3 billion versus a consensus of $26.2 billion) for the December quarter versus $19.62 billion a year ago.
The company expects <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/10/41373163/nvidia-supplier-tsmc-reports-q3-revenue-earnings-beat-amid-rising-demand-for-ai-chips" rel="noreferrer noopener">fourth-quarter revenue</a> of $26.1 billion &#8211; $26.9 billion.
Taiwan Semiconductor considered China the most significant revenue source after the U.S., as per the SCMP report. The chipmaker expected its China sales to grow by 26% in 2024 to $10.4 billion, accounting for 12% of its total revenue of $88.3 billion, SCMP cites Visible Alpha.
Investors can gain exposure to stocks of companies that manufacture semiconductors through the Invesco Semiconductors ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PSI#NYSE">PSI</a>) and ProShares UltraShort Semiconductors (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SSG#NYSE">SSG</a>).

Taiwan Semiconductor Hits $26.3 Billion Q4 Revenue, Reportedly Ends PowerAIR Deal Over Huawei Chip Breach Amid US Sanctions

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>) is all set for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tsmc" rel="noreferrer noopener">full-capacity production</a> in the U.S. and Germany after commercializing its debut Japanese chip plant in Kikuyo, Kumamoto Prefecture, last December.
Nvidia Corp&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) $3 trillion valuation and Taiwan Semiconductor&#8217;s 2nm progress testify to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42813592/ai-chip-stocks-nvidia-broadcom-amd-taiwan-semi-micron-super-micro-surge-on-monday-whats-going-on" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI-driven chip industry growth</a>. The contract chipmaker aims to complete production of plants in Arizona in 2025 and Dresden in 2027. Construction of Taiwan Semiconductor&#8217;s second Japanese factory will likely begin near the Kikuyo plant, the Japan News <a target="_blank" href="https://japannews.yomiuri.co.jp/business/companies/20250106-231710/" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>.
Taiwan commanded 67% of the global market share in contracted semiconductor manufacturing and nearly 80% in cutting-edge products in 2023, the Japan News cites TrendForce.
Taiwan attempted to shield itself from geopolitical tension by concentrating production on the island. Still, it also remains focused on its geographical diversification to help the world boost its semiconductor base by reducing its dependence on China, whose semiconductor supply chain was disrupted during the 2020 pandemic.
Kumamoto Gov. Takashi Kimura shared with Japan Times the country&#8217;s hopes to attract Taiwan Semiconductor&#8217;s third plant in the prefecture.
The new plant, located in Kikuyo, began commercializing 12-28 nm technology last December. It caters to Sony Group Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SONY#NYSE">SONY</a>), which produces camera sensors for Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>).
Taiwan Semiconductor is proficient in making general-purpose chips between 12 and 28 nm. However, chip plants in Japan failed to produce semiconductors thinner than 40 nm, prompting them to tap the Taiwanese chipmaker.
Taiwan Semiconductor is building a new plant in Arizona, where commercialization of 4-nm chips will likely begin between January and March. It aims to complete its debut European plant in Dresden in 2027. The plant targets a quadrupolar production plan with principal plants in Taiwan, Japan, the U.S., and Germany.
Meanwhile, some concerns loom in the form of President-elect Donald Trump taking charge on January 20.
The U.S. posted a significant trade deficit with Taiwan in 2023, prompting Trump to verbally attack the country during his presidential campaigns for allegedly depriving the U.S. of the semiconductor industry.
He suggested redemption by slapping tariffs on Taiwan, which can increase the contract chipmaker&#8217;s production costs since labor costs in the U.S. are about 30% higher than in Taiwan.
Taiwan Semiconductor stock surged over 115% in the last 12 months.
Goldman Sachs&#8216; Bruce Lu projected <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42825523/taiwan-semi-likely-for-upside-backed-by-ai-demand-and-advanced-node-pricing-analyst-says" rel="noreferrer noopener">another year of </a>robust revenue growth for Taiwan Semiconductor in 2025E, 26.8%, following 29.4% revenue growth in 2024E (all in USD terms). Demand in leading-edge nodes, mainly supported by AI, backed this growth.

Taiwan Semiconductor Ramps Up Production in Japan, US, and Germany to Diversify Away from China

Semiconductor, hardware, and artificial intelligence-linked stocks led by Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) are down as the sector continues to pull back.
AI stocks led by Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>), and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>) selloff continue their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/09/40746353/nvidia-super-micro-arm-tumble-2-in-premarket-most-chip-peers-deep-in-red-whats-dragging-down-sem" rel="noreferrer noopener">downward price trajectory</a> as the Nvidia and Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>) quarterly prints failed to impress the Street.
Broadcom released its third-quarter earnings on Thursday. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/09/40741225/broadcom-q3-earnings-revenue-beat-eps-beat-continued-strength-in-ai-solutions-and-vmware-2024-ai-gu" rel="noreferrer noopener">topline grew 42%</a> to &nbsp;$13.07 billion in the third quarter, topping the analyst estimate of $12.96 billion. The chipmaker expects fourth-quarter revenue of $14 billion, above the analyst consensus of $12.70 billion. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/09/n40740457/broadcom-inc-announces-third-quarter-fiscal-year-2024-financial-results-and-quarterly-dividend" rel="noreferrer noopener">adjusted gross margin</a> grew by 110 bps sequentially and 230 bps year-on-year to 77.4%.
JPMorgan analyst Harlan Sur projected upside, citing robust AI growth, VMware momentum, and recovery in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/09/40750949/broadcom-analysts-lifts-ai-revenue-forecast-to-12b-on-potential-strong-demand-from-" rel="noreferrer noopener">traditional semiconductor sectors</a>.
Last week, Nvidia&#8217;s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/08/40613050/nvidia-q2-earnings-guidance-top-street-view-as-ai-fuels-record-data-center-revenue-gross-margin-fal" rel="noreferrer noopener">second-quarter topline</a> grew 122% to $30.04 billion, surpassing the analyst estimate of $28.68 billion. It expects third-quarter revenue of $31.85 billion-$33.15 billion versus the analyst consensus of $31.77 billion. The adjusted gross margin declined 320 bps sequentially and grew by 450 bps year-on-year.
BofA Securities analyst Vivek Arya maintained a bullish outlook backed by data center and AI training demand and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40737481/nvidias-future-tied-to-llms-and-gaming-despite-ai-capex-skepticism-remains-a-sector-favorite-analyst" rel="noreferrer noopener">supply chain recovery</a>.
VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMH#NASDAQ">SMH</a>), which tracks the overall performance of the 25 largest U.S.-listed companies that produce semiconductors, including Nvidia, Taiwan Semiconductor, Broadcom, and AMD, has been down 12% in the last five days. iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) fell 12% in the previous five days.
Nvidia has been down 15% in the last five days. AMD lost over 10%, and Taiwan Semiconductor lost 8%. The selloff refused to subside despite assurances from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40735058/taiwan-semis-supplier-dismisses-selloff-projects-strong-ai-growth-surge" rel="noreferrer noopener">contract chipmakers like</a> Taiwan Semiconductor and Samsung Electronics (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SSNLF#OTC">SSNLF</a>) regarding sustained AI demand.
ProShares Ultra Semiconductors (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USD#NYSE">USD</a>), which corresponds to two times (2x) the daily performance of the Dow Jones U.S. Semiconductors&nbsp;Index, lost 26% in the last five days.
ETFs with exposure to riskier indexes noted volatility during the period. ProShares UltraShort Semiconductors (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SSG#NYSE">SSG</a>), which corresponds to two times the inverse (-2x) of the daily performance of the Dow Jones U.S. Semiconductors Index, gained 28% in the last five days.
The ETFs tracking broader indexes like the S&amp;P 500 and NASDAQ saw relatively lesser value losses due to Big Tech stocks like Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), Amazon.Com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>).
SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), which tracks the S&amp;P 500 stock market index, including Big Tech stocks, lost 3.5% in the last five days. Semiconductor ETFs Take A Beating, Dragged Lower By Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom Stocks

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) disclosed its plan to invest billions of dollars in Taiwan over the next 15 years. The investment aims to establish data centers, further expanding the company&#8217;s global footprint in Asia to meet the region&#8217;s increasing demand for cloud services.
What Happened: Amazon Web Services, the cloud computing arm of the Seattle-based tech giant, revealed on Tuesday its intention to launch an AWS infrastructure region in Taiwan by early 2025, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/amazon-to-invest-billions-in-taiwan-cloud-infrastructure-2e6e935c?mod=latest_headlines">reported</a> The Wall Street Journal.
&#8220;The new infrastructure will enable organizations to unlock the full potential of the cloud and build with AWS technologies like compute, storage, databases, analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence,&#8221; said Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of infrastructure services at AWS.
This investment in Taiwan follows AWS&#8217;s recent plans to spend $9 billion on expanding its cloud services in Singapore and a $15 billion investment in Japan to build cloud capacity.

US Regulations Hampered Lam Research's Q1 Business With China

The price of crude oil hit a new five-year low over the weekend after OPEC refused to cut production. As ugly as the chart is for oil, it is not alone with a number of other <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/topic/commodities">commodities</a> trading at or near lows.

	While it may appear to be the end of the road for the commodity ETFs and ETNs, not all are created equally.

	There are sub-sectors in the commodity sector that have been able to hold up better than the broad sector. When the time comes that commodities as a whole start to attract money, it will likely be led by the sub-sectors that have held up the best during the downturn.

	The iPath Bloomberg Livestock Total Return Sub-Index ETN (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cow#NYSE">COW</a>) is up over 18 percent this year, beating the S&amp;P 500 as well as the broad commodity index. The ETN is composed of an unleveraged investment in the futures contracts of live cattle and lean hogs. With the former commodity making up 67 percent of the portfolio and the latter accounting for the remainder.

	Coffee</h3>

	The iPath Bloomberg Coffee Subindex Total Return SM Index (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/jo#NYSE">JO</a>) is up an amazing 61 percent in 2014, as there have been supply issues with the commodity. The ETN tracks an unleveraged investment in one futures contract on coffee.

	Aluminum</h3>

	The iPath Bloomberg Aluminum Subindex Total Return SM (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/jju#NYSE">JJU</a>) has also had a solid year, up 10 percent since the start of 2014. Similar to the other ETNs, the vehicle tracks an unleveraged investment in one futures contract on aluminum. The metal as been strong this year as supply issues and increasing demand have resulted in the outperformance.

Benzinga's Mandatory ETF Reading for September 4, 2013 

Shares of Applied Materials (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/amat#NASDAQ">AMAT</a>) are trading higher in the after-hours following the release of the company's Q1 earnings results. Currently, shares are higher by 4.09%, trading at $13.75; they ended the regular session higher by 2.40%, at $13.21. 

Applied Materials reported Q1 non-GAAP EPS of $0.18 (GAAP $0.09) on revenues of $2.19 billion. Q1 orders came in at $2.01 billion.

"Global demand for mobile devices is driving a third consecutive year of strong capital investment by semiconductor customers," said Mike Splinter, chairman and chief executive officer. "As a result, we see solid order momentum and an improved outlook overall for our second quarter."

During the quarter, Varian generated orders of approximately $270 million and net sales of approximately $200 million which were reported within the Silicon Systems Group (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/ssg#">SSG</a>) and the Applied Global Services (AGS) segments. 

The Varian business contributed approximately $0.01 to the company's non-GAAP EPS, which excludes acquisition-related charges equivalent to approximately $0.09 per share.

The company sees Q2 EPS in the range of $0.20-0.28.

Applied Materials, Inc. provides manufacturing equipment, services and software to the global semiconductor, flat panel display, solar photovoltaic and related industries.

Applied Materials Jumps on Stellar Q1 Earnings

Novellus Systems (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/nvls#NASDAQ">NVLS</a>) is scheduled to report its second-quarter 2011 results Monday after the closing bell, offering an early peek at what to expect from coming earnings from semiconductor companies. Analysts expect to see Novellus's per-share earnings up nearly 12% from a year ago but down about 27% from the previous quarter. 

While Novellus does not make the following list, here are six semiconductor stocks that are trading in the neighborhood of their 52-week highs.

Avago Technologies (NASDAQ: AVGO): After recent meetings with Avago management, Citigroup raised its price target on the stock and Kaufman Brothers forecast a stronger second half 2011 for the company. The dividend yield is 0.8% and the long-term EPS growth forecast is 12.1%. The share price is more than 33% higher than at the beginning of the year. The stock has outperformed competitor Analog Devices (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/adi#NYSE">ADI</a>) and the industry average in that time.

Cypress Semiconductor (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cy#NASDAQ">CY</a>): Cypress was recently named a top pick by Collins Stewart, and the company is expected to post year-over-year earnings and revenue growth on July 21. Analysts on average underestimated per-share earnings in the past five quarters, and the long-term EPS growth forecast is 16.1%. The stock appears poised to recapture the 52-week high of $23.95 per share from back in May; the share price is up more than 25% year to date.

EZchip Semiconductor (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ezch#NASDAQ">EZCH</a>): After seeing record revenues in the fourth quarter, EZchip reported disappointing revenue results in the first quarter, but expects the launch of its NP-4 to help it regain momentum. The long-term EPS growth forecast is 24.6%. The share price is more than 33% higher year to date; the stock has outperformed competitor Broadcom (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/brcm#NASDAQ">BRCM</a>) and the semiconductor equipment industry average, as well as the broader markets, in that time.

Intel (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/intc#NASDAQ">INTC</a>): Intel seems poised to benefit from corporations that can no longer delay enterprise equipment purchases, as well as Japanese companies rebuilding following the earthquake and tsunami in March. Intel has a dividend yield of 2.9% and a return on equity of 24.4%. The share price is nearly 12% higher than six months ago. The stock has outperformed competitors Advance Micro Devices (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/amd#NYSE">AMD</a>) and Texas Instruments (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/txn#NYSE">TXN</a>) in that time.

Varian Semiconductor Equipment (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vsea#NASDAQ">VSEA</a>): Applied Materials (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/amat#NASDAQ">AMAT</a>) agreed to acquire Varian back in May, and Varian is expected to post 40% EPS and revenue growth in its July 28 quarterly report. Short interest has risen since the takeover announcement and is now 3.7% of the float. The share price recently hit a multiyear high of $62.00 and ended last week more than 66% higher than at the beginning of the year.

Xlinx (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/xlnx#NASDAQ">XLNX</a>): This maker of programmable logic devices reported record revenue results for fiscal 2011, and its CFO recently bought 14,500 shares. Xilinx has a dividend yield of 1.8% and a return on equity of 15.0%. The long-term earnings per share growth forecast is 12.2%. Its P/E ratio is less than the industry average. Shares reach a multiyear high of $37.37 last week. The stock has outperformed its industry average, but underperformed rival Altera (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/altr#NASDAQ">ALTR</a>) year to date.

Six Semiconductor Stocks Trading Near 52-Week Highs

Novellus Systems (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/nvls#NASDAQ">NVLS</a>) will be reporting its second-quarter 2011 results Monday, July 11, after the closing bell. While Novellus is not usually a sector mover, investors will be looking for early signs of what to expect from tech sector earnings.

Analysts are looking for Novellus to report per-share earnings of $0.76, which is up from $0.67 per share in the same period of last year. The consensus earnings estimate is unchanged in the past 60 days. Analysts also expect to see revenues of $352.3 million, an increase of 9.6% from a year ago.

Note that Novellus earnings have grown in each of the past five quarters, topping consensus estimates each time. And analysts so far are looking for full-year EPS to be 15.4% higher than a year ago and revenues to come in 11.1% higher.

The Company

Novellus Systems develops, manufactures, sells and supports equipment used in the fabrication of integrated circuits. The San Jose, California-based company operates in two segments: the Semiconductor Group and the Industrial Applications Group. It markets its products primarily in Europe, the United States and Asia. 

During the three months that ended in June, Novellus offered cautious guidance for the second quarter and announced a senior note offering. Novellus also was the subject of takeover rumors.

Performance

The long-term earnings per share growth forecast is 13.0% and the return on equity is 20.9%. Novellus has a P/E ratio of 10.2 and a PEG ratio is 0.8. Analysts have a mean price target on the stock of $37.71 per share; shares ended the week at $35.97.

The share price is more than 16% higher than six months ago. During that time, the stock has outperformed competitor Applied Materials (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/amat#NASDAQ">AMAT</a>) and the semiconductor equipment industry average, as well as the broader markets.

Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bear 3X Shares (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/soxs#NYSE">SOXS</a>) led the decliners among the ETFs today, with a 6.03% loss. SOXS traded lower, as the semiconductor stocks traded higher. Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/altr#NASDAQ">ALTR</a>) gained 4.01% today.
ProShares Ultra DJ-UBS Crude Oil (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/uco#NYSE">UCO</a>) traded lower on Friday, along with crude oil. UCO lost 4.00%, and crude oil fell below $90.
iPath Dow Jones-UBS Cotton Subindex Total Return ETN (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bal#NYSE">BAL</a>) fell 3.50%, as cotton futures showed some weakness. BAL closed at $84.05, and it had a volume of 91.6K traded shares.
ProShares UltraShort Semiconductors(<a class="ticker" href="/stock/etf#">ETF</a>) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ssg#NYSE">SSG</a>) is another bear market semiconductor ETF that struggled today. SSG fell 3.05%, and closed at $9.23.

Effective Friday, October 15, 2010, iShares S&amp;P North American Technology-Semiconductors Index Fund (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/igw#">IGW</a>) changed its name and ticker symbol to iShares PHLX SOX Semiconductor Sector Index Fund (SOXX).  The CUSIP did not change, but the PHLX (Philadelphia Stock Exchange) is owned by Nasdaq so the listing changed from the NYSE to Nasdaq.
The underlying index also changed to the PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index, which has been the benchmark semiconductor index since its introduction in 1993.  It remains a mystery as to why it took so long for an unleveraged ETF tracking the SOX index to become available.  The <a href="http://investwithanedge.com/category/etf-statistics" target="_blank">ETF statistics</a> will treat this as an ETF change – not a closure and launch.
<a href="http://us.ishares.com/product_info/fund/overview/SOXX/index.htm" target="_blank">SOXX overview</a> indicates 31 current holdings with the largest being Broadcom Corp Class A (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/brcm#">BRCM</a>) 8.7%, Texas Instruments (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/txn#">TXN</a>) 8.6%, Applied Materials (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/amat#">AMAT</a>) 8.0%, Intel (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/intc#">INTC</a>) 7.5%, and Marvell Technology Group (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/mrvl#">MRVL</a>) 6.3%.  The expense ratio remains at 0.48%.
