Sugar Industry Merger Challenged By Justice Department

Semiconductor equipment maker Lam Research Corporation (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/lrcx#NASDAQ">LRCX</a>) <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/LRCX/analysis?p=LRCX">topped estimates</a> for the fiscal first quarter 2021 and guided better than the street&#39;s expectations of revenue and earnings per share for the December quarter in its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/20/10/g18003475/lam-research-corporation-reports-financial-results-for-the-quarter-ended-september-27-2020">earnings report</a>, late Wednesday.
The company expects softer margins in the second quarter.
Key Highlights:
<ul>
<li>Lam Research&#39;s Q1 revenue of $3.18 billion beat consensus by $70 million, growing 46.5% year-over-year and 14% sequentially.</li>
<li>Non-GAAP diluted EPS of $5.67 beat analyst estimates by 48 cents. Diluted EPS was $5.59.</li>
<li>System revenue, which includes sales of new leading-edge equipment in deposition, etch and clean markets, grew 57.35% year-over-year to $2.15 billion; customer support revenue crossed the billion mark for the first time, rising 28.5% year-over-year to $1.03 billion.</li>
<li>Non-GAAP gross margin grew 140 basis points sequentially to 47.4%, and non-GAAP operating margin rose 310 basis points sequentially to 30.2%.</li>
<li>The company generated $642.5 million in operating cash flow and ended the quarter with a cash balance of $4.38 billion.</li>
<li>Capital expenditure increased by 60% year-over-year to $62.8 million.</li>
</ul>
Outlook For Q2:

<li>Lam Research expects revenue in the range of $3.1 billion to $3.5 billion, exceeding analyst consensus of $3.08 billion.</li>
<li>Non-GAAP diluted EPS expected in the range of $5.20 to $6.00, higher than the consensus of $5.16.</li>
<li>Non-GAAP gross margin&nbsp;in the range of 45% to 47%, and non-GAAP operating margin in the range of 28.5% to 30.5%</li>

Management commentary: &quot;Our strong operational execution is enabling the [company] to meet our customers&#39; critical needs, providing a solid foundation to deliver on our long-term growth objectives,&quot; said Lam Research&nbsp;President and CEO Tim Archer.
&quot;As has been widely reporting, US regulations have impacted our ability to ship wafer fab equipment and parts to a large foundry customer in China. We are working with regulators on this issue and have applied for licenses to ship equipment and parts that are subject to the restrictions. As a result of the current situation, our December quarter guidance reflects an impact to sales to this customer,&quot; Tim said on the <a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/lam-research-corp-lrcx-q3-2020-earnings-call-transcript-2020-10-22">company&#39;s conference call</a>.
&quot;From a market perspective, we see positive momentum in the underlying drivers of semiconductor growth and believe this translates into a healthy outlook for Lam&#39;s business,&quot; he added.
&quot;Third-party data suggests that growth in PC, notebook and workstation shipments in the calendar third quarter surpassed a 10-year high to reach record levels,&quot; said Tim.

US Regulations Hampered Lam Research's Q1 Business With China

The price of crude oil hit a new five-year low over the weekend after OPEC refused to cut production. As ugly as the chart is for oil, it is not alone with a number of other <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/topic/commodities">commodities</a> trading at or near lows.

		iPath Bloomberg Sugar Subindex Total Return Sm Index (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sgg#NYSE">SGG</a>) is a few ticks from a four-year low.</li>
</ul>

	While it may appear to be the end of the road for the commodity ETFs and ETNs, not all are created equally.

	There are sub-sectors in the commodity sector that have been able to hold up better than the broad sector. When the time comes that commodities as a whole start to attract money, it will likely be led by the sub-sectors that have held up the best during the downturn.

	The iPath Bloomberg Livestock Total Return Sub-Index ETN (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cow#NYSE">COW</a>) is up over 18 percent this year, beating the S&amp;P 500 as well as the broad commodity index. The ETN is composed of an unleveraged investment in the futures contracts of live cattle and lean hogs. With the former commodity making up 67 percent of the portfolio and the latter accounting for the remainder.

	Coffee</h3>

	The iPath Bloomberg Coffee Subindex Total Return SM Index (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/jo#NYSE">JO</a>) is up an amazing 61 percent in 2014, as there have been supply issues with the commodity. The ETN tracks an unleveraged investment in one futures contract on coffee.

	Aluminum</h3>

	The iPath Bloomberg Aluminum Subindex Total Return SM (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/jju#NYSE">JJU</a>) has also had a solid year, up 10 percent since the start of 2014. Similar to the other ETNs, the vehicle tracks an unleveraged investment in one futures contract on aluminum. The metal as been strong this year as supply issues and increasing demand have resulted in the outperformance.

Benzinga's Mandatory ETF Reading for September 4, 2013 

Shares of Applied Materials (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/amat#NASDAQ">AMAT</a>) are trading higher in the after-hours following the release of the company's Q1 earnings results. Currently, shares are higher by 4.09%, trading at $13.75; they ended the regular session higher by 2.40%, at $13.21. 

Applied Materials reported Q1 non-GAAP EPS of $0.18 (GAAP $0.09) on revenues of $2.19 billion. Q1 orders came in at $2.01 billion.

"Global demand for mobile devices is driving a third consecutive year of strong capital investment by semiconductor customers," said Mike Splinter, chairman and chief executive officer. "As a result, we see solid order momentum and an improved outlook overall for our second quarter."

During the quarter, Varian generated orders of approximately $270 million and net sales of approximately $200 million which were reported within the Silicon Systems Group (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/ssg#">SSG</a>) and the Applied Global Services (AGS) segments. 

The Varian business contributed approximately $0.01 to the company's non-GAAP EPS, which excludes acquisition-related charges equivalent to approximately $0.09 per share.

The company sees Q2 EPS in the range of $0.20-0.28.

Applied Materials, Inc. provides manufacturing equipment, services and software to the global semiconductor, flat panel display, solar photovoltaic and related industries.

Applied Materials Jumps on Stellar Q1 Earnings

Novellus Systems (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/nvls#NASDAQ">NVLS</a>) is scheduled to report its second-quarter 2011 results Monday after the closing bell, offering an early peek at what to expect from coming earnings from semiconductor companies. Analysts expect to see Novellus's per-share earnings up nearly 12% from a year ago but down about 27% from the previous quarter. 

While Novellus does not make the following list, here are six semiconductor stocks that are trading in the neighborhood of their 52-week highs.

Avago Technologies (NASDAQ: AVGO): After recent meetings with Avago management, Citigroup raised its price target on the stock and Kaufman Brothers forecast a stronger second half 2011 for the company. The dividend yield is 0.8% and the long-term EPS growth forecast is 12.1%. The share price is more than 33% higher than at the beginning of the year. The stock has outperformed competitor Analog Devices (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/adi#NYSE">ADI</a>) and the industry average in that time.

Cypress Semiconductor (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cy#NASDAQ">CY</a>): Cypress was recently named a top pick by Collins Stewart, and the company is expected to post year-over-year earnings and revenue growth on July 21. Analysts on average underestimated per-share earnings in the past five quarters, and the long-term EPS growth forecast is 16.1%. The stock appears poised to recapture the 52-week high of $23.95 per share from back in May; the share price is up more than 25% year to date.

EZchip Semiconductor (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ezch#NASDAQ">EZCH</a>): After seeing record revenues in the fourth quarter, EZchip reported disappointing revenue results in the first quarter, but expects the launch of its NP-4 to help it regain momentum. The long-term EPS growth forecast is 24.6%. The share price is more than 33% higher year to date; the stock has outperformed competitor Broadcom (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/brcm#NASDAQ">BRCM</a>) and the semiconductor equipment industry average, as well as the broader markets, in that time.

Intel (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/intc#NASDAQ">INTC</a>): Intel seems poised to benefit from corporations that can no longer delay enterprise equipment purchases, as well as Japanese companies rebuilding following the earthquake and tsunami in March. Intel has a dividend yield of 2.9% and a return on equity of 24.4%. The share price is nearly 12% higher than six months ago. The stock has outperformed competitors Advance Micro Devices (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/amd#NYSE">AMD</a>) and Texas Instruments (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/txn#NYSE">TXN</a>) in that time.

Varian Semiconductor Equipment (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vsea#NASDAQ">VSEA</a>): Applied Materials (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/amat#NASDAQ">AMAT</a>) agreed to acquire Varian back in May, and Varian is expected to post 40% EPS and revenue growth in its July 28 quarterly report. Short interest has risen since the takeover announcement and is now 3.7% of the float. The share price recently hit a multiyear high of $62.00 and ended last week more than 66% higher than at the beginning of the year.

Xlinx (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/xlnx#NASDAQ">XLNX</a>): This maker of programmable logic devices reported record revenue results for fiscal 2011, and its CFO recently bought 14,500 shares. Xilinx has a dividend yield of 1.8% and a return on equity of 15.0%. The long-term earnings per share growth forecast is 12.2%. Its P/E ratio is less than the industry average. Shares reach a multiyear high of $37.37 last week. The stock has outperformed its industry average, but underperformed rival Altera (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/altr#NASDAQ">ALTR</a>) year to date.

Analysts are looking for Novellus to report per-share earnings of $0.76, which is up from $0.67 per share in the same period of last year. The consensus earnings estimate is unchanged in the past 60 days. Analysts also expect to see revenues of $352.3 million, an increase of 9.6% from a year ago.

Note that Novellus earnings have grown in each of the past five quarters, topping consensus estimates each time. And analysts so far are looking for full-year EPS to be 15.4% higher than a year ago and revenues to come in 11.1% higher.

The Company

Novellus Systems develops, manufactures, sells and supports equipment used in the fabrication of integrated circuits. The San Jose, California-based company operates in two segments: the Semiconductor Group and the Industrial Applications Group. It markets its products primarily in Europe, the United States and Asia. 

During the three months that ended in June, Novellus offered cautious guidance for the second quarter and announced a senior note offering. Novellus also was the subject of takeover rumors.

Performance

The long-term earnings per share growth forecast is 13.0% and the return on equity is 20.9%. Novellus has a P/E ratio of 10.2 and a PEG ratio is 0.8. Analysts have a mean price target on the stock of $37.71 per share; shares ended the week at $35.97.

The share price is more than 16% higher than six months ago. During that time, the stock has outperformed competitor Applied Materials (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/amat#NASDAQ">AMAT</a>) and the semiconductor equipment industry average, as well as the broader markets.

Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bear 3X Shares (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/soxs#NYSE">SOXS</a>) led the decliners among the ETFs today, with a 6.03% loss. SOXS traded lower, as the semiconductor stocks traded higher. Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/altr#NASDAQ">ALTR</a>) gained 4.01% today.
ProShares Ultra DJ-UBS Crude Oil (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/uco#NYSE">UCO</a>) traded lower on Friday, along with crude oil. UCO lost 4.00%, and crude oil fell below $90.
iPath Dow Jones-UBS Cotton Subindex Total Return ETN (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bal#NYSE">BAL</a>) fell 3.50%, as cotton futures showed some weakness. BAL closed at $84.05, and it had a volume of 91.6K traded shares.
ProShares UltraShort Semiconductors(<a class="ticker" href="/stock/etf#">ETF</a>) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ssg#NYSE">SSG</a>) is another bear market semiconductor ETF that struggled today. SSG fell 3.05%, and closed at $9.23.

Effective Friday, October 15, 2010, iShares S&amp;P North American Technology-Semiconductors Index Fund (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/igw#">IGW</a>) changed its name and ticker symbol to iShares PHLX SOX Semiconductor Sector Index Fund (SOXX).  The CUSIP did not change, but the PHLX (Philadelphia Stock Exchange) is owned by Nasdaq so the listing changed from the NYSE to Nasdaq.
The underlying index also changed to the PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index, which has been the benchmark semiconductor index since its introduction in 1993.  It remains a mystery as to why it took so long for an unleveraged ETF tracking the SOX index to become available.  The <a href="http://investwithanedge.com/category/etf-statistics" target="_blank">ETF statistics</a> will treat this as an ETF change – not a closure and launch.
<a href="http://us.ishares.com/product_info/fund/overview/SOXX/index.htm" target="_blank">SOXX overview</a> indicates 31 current holdings with the largest being Broadcom Corp Class A (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/brcm#">BRCM</a>) 8.7%, Texas Instruments (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/txn#">TXN</a>) 8.6%, Applied Materials (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/amat#">AMAT</a>) 8.0%, Intel (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/intc#">INTC</a>) 7.5%, and Marvell Technology Group (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/mrvl#">MRVL</a>) 6.3%.  The expense ratio remains at 0.48%.

The NASDAQ-100 Index fell 1.22%, and ProShares Trust UltraPro Short QQQ ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sqqq#NYSE">SQQQ</a>) jumped 3.46%. Among the NASDAQ-100 components Patterson Companies, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pdco#NASDAQ">PDCO</a>) had the biggest loss with a decline of 4.91%.

While the buy-and-hold strategy makes the most intuitive sense, it&rsquo;s boring, which invariably leads curious investors down the path toward inverse ETFs. Just like any other exchange-traded fund, these bear trades represent a basket of securities under a single umbrella. However, the main difference is that when the underlying index falls, your holdings rise. Of course, the opposite is also true; hence the risks.



Still, inverse ETFs offer myriad advantages or conveniences. Some of them are as follows:



<ul><li>Convenience: You just buy the bear fund and don&rsquo;t have to worry about complex mechanisms.</li>



<li>Mitigation: You only lose what you put in which isn&rsquo;t always the case for other short trades.</li>



<li>Access: Both standard and inverse ETFs can be <a href="https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/investing/inverse-etfs#:~:text=Yes%2C%20ETFs%2C%20including%20inverse%20ETFs,the%20day%20and%20reset%20daily.">traded through a regular brokerage account</a>.</li>
</ul>At the same time, there&rsquo;s no such thing as risk-free investments. Below are some dangers to consider:



<ul><li>Compounding: Inverse ETFs undergo a daily rebalancing, forcing a short-term mentality.</li>



<li>Correlation: The inverse relationship of bear funds isn&rsquo;t always perfectly aligned.</li>



<li>Counterparty: Some inverse ETFs may use derivatives that countering parties may default on.</li>
</ul>To be sure, it&rsquo;s a risky endeavor. However, because it&rsquo;s one of the easiest ways to short the market, these inverse ETFs could see contrarian demand.



<h2>ProShares Short QQQ (PSQ)</h2>

One of the most popular inverse ETFs based on its average trading volume of 31.62 million units, ProShares Short QQQ (NYSEARCA:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/psq-stock-quote/">PSQ</a>) seeks daily investment results before fees and expenses that correspond to the 1X inverse of the daily performance of the Nasdaq 100 index. Of course, the technology sector has been on fire, which means that PSQ represents a clear laggard.



Since the beginning of the year, PSQ dropped almost 31% of market value. In the past five years, it slipped more than 69%, thus reinforcing the short-term nature of inverse ETFs. Remember, this is about getting in quickly and getting out with similar urgency.



Fundamentally, though, the PSQ could be intriguing because of the natural ebb and flow of the markets. Specifically, the target index began popping higher in late October, likely on <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/12/05/fed-should-cut-rates-at-least-5-times-next-year-portfolio-manager-says.html">speculation that the Federal Reserve could cut interest rates next year</a>. However, if that doesn&rsquo;t pan out, the Nasdaq 100 could be due for a correction, one that you could benefit from.



<h2>Direxion Daily S&amp;P 500 Bear 1X Shares (SPDN)</h2>

Another popular example of inverse ETFs, the Direxion Daily S&amp;P 500 Bear 1X Shares (NYSEARCA:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/spdn-stock-quote/">SPDN</a>) features average trading volume of 7.44 million. According to its <a href="https://money.usnews.com/funds/etfs/trading-inverse-equity/direxion-daily-s-p-500-bear-1x-etf/spdn">prospectus</a>, the SPDN attempts to track 100% of the opposite of the daily performance of the S&amp;P 500 index. Notably, this fund invests at least 80% of its net assets in swap agreements, futures contracts, short positions or other financial instruments.



Stated differently, you&rsquo;ve got to watch for counterparty risk among other possible pitfalls. For now, the immediate challenge centers on the robust performance of the benchmark index. With the target index up 19% since the start of the year, it&rsquo;s a bit merciful that the SPDN is down &ldquo;only&rdquo; 15%.



Still, an argument exists that &ndash; based on the relative strength indicator (<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/rsi-stock-quote/">RSI</a>) &ndash; the S&amp;P 500 rides in overbought territory. Yes, intense speculation surrounds the concept that the Fed may cut rates. However, inflation remains stubbornly high so I don&rsquo;t see this as a foregone conclusion. Therefore, this inverse ETF could be intriguing.



<h2>ProShares UltraShort Financials (SKF)</h2>

Dialing up the risk factor significantly, ProShares UltraShort Financials (NYSEARCA:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/skf-stock-quote/">SKF</a>) corresponds to <a href="https://money.usnews.com/funds/etfs/trading-inverse-equity/proshares-ultrashort-financials/skf">two times the inverse</a> of the daily performance of the S&amp;P Financial Select Sector Index. Because we&rsquo;re dealing with 2X leverage, the compounding effect becomes even &ldquo;worse&rdquo; when the fund rebalancing materializes. Basically, the percentage-based ebb and flow over time erodes your holdings on a net basis.



To give you an idea of how speculative the SKF is, consider the underlying index. Since the January opener, the S&amp;P Financial Select Sector gained nearly 4%. In sharp contrast, this bear fund dropped more than 14% of market value. That&rsquo;s a severe misalignment between the losses that should be printed versus what we actually see.



Still, the fundamental case for SKF centers on the lingering concerns related to the financial sector. As The Hill stated last month, the <a href="https://thehill.com/opinion/finance/4315718-the-regional-bank-crisis-is-not-over/">regional banking crisis is still not over</a>. Timed correctly, the SKF could be lucrative contrarian trade among inverse ETFs.



<h2>ProShares UltraShort Semiconductors (SSG)</h2>

When it comes to inverse ETFs that could blow up in your face, ProShares UltraShort Semiconductors (NYSEARCA:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/ssg-stock-quote/">SSG</a>) suffers from two clear disadvantages. First, the bear fund corresponds to two times the inverse of the daily performance of the Dow Jones U.S. Semiconductors index. As we just saw, leveraged ETFs can become discombobulated from their &ldquo;true&rdquo; correlations.



Second, the semiconductor space represents one of the hottest ecosystems of the year. With enterprises like Nvidia (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nvda-stock-quote/">NVDA</a>) storming higher due to the burgeoning development of artificial intelligence and machine learning, it&rsquo;s only the most intrepid of contrarians that would even consider betting against the sector. Then again, the audacious nature of the speculation could possibly yield dramatic returns.



Interestingly, the target semiconductor index peaked in the second half of November. Since then, the benchmark has slipped conspicuously. If traders anticipate that the index could continue its decline, the SSG may be enticing.



Keep in mind that in the trailing five sessions, SSG gained nearly 7%.

Dialing up the risk-reward profile to the maximum level, the Direxion Daily S&amp;P 500 Bear 3X Shares (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/spxs-stock-quote/">SPXS</a>) should not be entered into lightly. If regular inverse ETFs require a quick-in, quick-out approach, you need to be that much more vigilant with SPXS. As the name of the fund suggests, the platform attempts to deliver the 3X inverse of the S&amp;P 500 index.



Another factor to consider is that per its <a href="https://money.usnews.com/funds/etfs/trading-inverse-equity/direxion-daily-s-p-500-bear-3x-etf/spxs">prospectus</a>, the SPXS under normal circumstances invests at least 80% of its net assets in swap agreements, futures contracts, short positions or other financial instruments. Therefore, the counterparty risk is extremely heightened with the Direxion Daily S&amp;P 500 Bear. Also, keep in mind that with an expense ratio of 1.08%, it&rsquo;s not cheap.



To give you an understanding of the dangers of triple leverage, the benchmark index gained 19% year-to-date. In sharp contrast, the SPXS cratered to the tune of 41%. Again, quick in, quick out.



Still, the benchmark index does look a little stretched. If the stars align, SPXS could be a big winner.



<h2>Direxion Daily FTSE China Bear 3X Shares (YANG)</h2>

If we&rsquo;re going to be cynical with inverse ETFs, we might as well consider shorting global equities, particularly from competing nations. For that, we have the Direxion Daily FTSE China Bear 3X Shares (NYSEARCA:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/yang-stock-quote/">YANG</a>). According to its <a href="https://money.usnews.com/funds/etfs/trading-inverse-equity/direxion-daily-ftse-china-bear-3x-etf/yang">prospectus</a>, YANG seeks 300% of the opposite of the daily performance of the FTSE China 50 index.



Now, for some risk awareness. Under normal circumstances, YANG invests at least 80% of its net assets in swap agreements, futures contracts and other instruments that carry counterparty risk. Fundamentally, though, the case for YANG is appealing because of fading economic conditions in the world&rsquo;s second-largest economy. Per Foreign Affairs, a key negative catalyst stemmed from <a href="https://www.foreignaffairs.com/united-states/how-america-should-react-chinas-economic-slowdown#:~:text=China's%20slowdown%20is%20the%20result,localities'%20ability%20to%20issue%20debt.">overinvestment in property and infrastructure</a>.



Sure enough, YANG popped up about 34% since the start of the year. Further, as more questions rise regarding Chinese economic stability, the bear fund could continue its ascent. Still, with an expense ratio of 1.08% &ndash; the category average being 1.05% &ndash; caution is warranted.



<h2>ProShares UltraPro Short Russell 2000 (SRTY)</h2>

Finally, closing out this list of inverse ETFs is the ProShares UltraPro Short Russell 2000 (NYSEARCA:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/srty-stock-quote/">SRTY</a>). According to its <a href="https://money.usnews.com/funds/etfs/trading-inverse-equity/proshares-ultrapro-short-russell2000/srty">prospectus</a>, the SRTY seeks daily investment results that correspond to three times the inverse of the daily performance of the Russell 2000 index. Because the underlying canvas targets small-capitalization companies, both big risks and big reward potential cover the market idea.



To be sure, those that decide to dive into SRTY will be taking on extreme dangers. Right now, the Russell 2000 is <a href="https://money.usnews.com/funds/etfs/trading-inverse-equity/proshares-ultrapro-short-russell2000/srty">up around 6%</a> since the January opener. On the other end of the aisle, the UltraPro Short ETF is down 26%. In other words, when you&rsquo;re trading 3X inverse ETFs and the underlying index moves marginally against your position, your portfolio could implode.



Still, the opposite could be true. For example, if the Fed decides to forego interest rate cuts and instead raises them to combat stubbornly high inflation, the equities sector could suffer badly. So, it really depends on your convictions.
