The firm also highlighted China's ongoing economic challenges, particularly in the property sector, as a drag on copper prices. Mainland China accounts for about half of global copper consumption, and its stimulus measures in late 2024 did little to offset the sector's slowdown.
Meanwhile, S&amp;P Global's analysts anticipate that any major turnaround will require significantly more policy intervention.
"A strong dollar adds downside risk to prices in 2025, with most economists downgrading growth forecasts due to expected U.S. tariff hikes," <a href="https://www.spglobal.com/commodity-insights/en/news-research/latest-news/metals/123024-commodities-2025-trump-trade-tactics-loom-over-2025-copper-demand-prices">said</a> principal analyst Ronnie Cecil. The anticipated tariffs, ranging from 10% to 100% on key imports, are expected to disrupt global trade flows and exacerbate economic pressures, particularly for export-driven economies like China.

Copper prices on the London Metal Exchange averaged $9,307 per ton in 2024 and Commodity Insights forecasts a rise to $9,825 per ton in 2025. However, the concentrate market faces significant challenges, including the prolonged shutdown of First Quantum's Cobre Panama mine, which the local government shut down in December 2023.
Without a mine that provided around 1.5% of the global supply, the estimated 52,500 metric ton deficit from 2024 could balloon to over 840,000 in 2025. Davidson noted that Cobre Panama might not resume operations until 2026.
Despite uncertainties, some industry leaders remain cautiously optimistic. Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm pointed out that previous U.S. trade policies had bolstered their operations and expressed confidence in navigating potential challenges. "We are a global business; we can cope with this," he remarked.

White &amp; Case's straw poll of 112 decision makers from the metals &amp; mining sector noted copper as the <a href="https://www.whitecase.com/sites/default/files/2025-01/mining-metals-2025-market-sentiment-survey-results.pdf">number one pick</a> to outperform in 2025. The new forecast anticipates global demand will average 104 million barrels daily, reflecting a combination of improving economic conditions and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iea.org/reports/oil-market-report-january-2025" rel="noreferrer noopener">lower fuel prices</a>.
In the fourth quarter of 2024, oil demand rebounded strongly, increasing by 1.5 million barrels daily—the highest growth since late 2023.

Meanwhile, Brent crude prices hover around $80 per barrel, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate trades near $77 per barrel, reflecting market concerns over tightened supply, the WSJ reports.
Despite geopolitical pressures, global oil supply rose modestly in December 2024, supported by increased production in Nigeria and Libya. For 2025, the IEA forecasts supply growth of 1.8 million barrels daily, led by non-OPEC+ countries such as the U.S., Brazil, and Canada. What Happened: Amazon set a new <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/streaming">Prime Video</a> NFL record with an average of 22.07 million viewers during the Steelers and Ravens matchup, which the Ravens won 28-14 and advanced.
The record tops the 17.92 million Amazon's Prime Video had for a regular season game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers earlier this season. That match was the most streamed game during the season, before Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) set the 2024 NFL streaming record<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/24/12/42711504/lebron-james-vs-nfl-nba-star-says-christmas-is-our-day-2024-ratings-paint-a-different-picture"> on Christmas Day.</a>
Amazon has the rights to "Thursday Night Football" games and has regularly shared that the NFL games have provided a boost to Prime subscribers and also helped with advertising revenue.
The NFL Playoffs game sets a new bar for Amazon in its sports streams and the NFL partnership, as <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/nfl-wild-card-2025-tv-ratings-prime-video-fox-1236108797/">reported </a>by The Hollywood Reporter. While the viewership was high and the game hit a peak of 24.66 million viewers during the game, the viewership trails several other media companies in their NFL coverage.
This is the second straight year the NFL has featured a NFL Playoffs game exclusive to a streaming platform. Last year, Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>) streamed a NFL Playoffs game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins on Peacock.
That game had average viewership of 22.86 million, which ranks ahead of Amazon's game this season.
Also ranking ahead of Amazon are both Christmas Day games that streamed on Netflix with average viewership of 24.1 million and 24.3 million.

Why It's Important: Amazon's NFL Playoffs match was also the least watched of the first weekend of games.
Fox Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOX#NASDAQ">FOX</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOXA#NASDAQ">FOXA</a>) had average viewership of 35.89 million for the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers game on Fox. Comcast had a viewership of 29 million for the Washington Commanders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers game. These games had viewership down 11% and 19% year-over-year respectively from last year.
CBS, which is a unit of Paramount Global (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PARA#NASDAQ">PARA</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PARAA#NASDAQ">PARAA</a>), had two games over the first weekend with average viewership of 26.6 million for the Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans game and average viewership of 31.2 million for the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos game. These games saw an increase in viewership compared to last year.
Monday's contents between the Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings, which aired on Walt Disney Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) units ABC, ESPN and ESPN2, had average viewership of 25.34 million, down 13% from last year's opening weekend Monday night game.
Four games will be played in the second weekend of the NFL Playoffs with Disney, Fox, Comcast and Paramount each having one contest.
Amazon's Playoffs game could serve as a continued test of how streaming viewership matches up against broadcast channels. This year's playoffs showed that so far more viewers watched on broadcast than on streaming.
The fact that Amazon's Playoffs game also fell shy of Netflix's Christmas Day viewership for NFL games could also prove costly if the two streaming platforms go head-to-head on sports rights in the future.
Amazon had a successful season of NFL viewership in 2024, with an average of 13.2 million viewers for its "Thursday Night Football" games, up 11% year-over-year, as <a href="https://frontofficesports.com/amazons-nfl-ratings-rose-13-in-2024-a-playoff-game-is-next/">reported </a>by FrontOfficeSports.
The company also streamed a second annual Black Friday game on Prime Video. When that game is counted into the games, Amazon's 2024 NFL viewership averaged 13.5 million viewers and was up 13% year-over-year.
Amazon has come a long ways from the 9.58 million average viewers it had for "Thursday Night Football" games in 2022.

What Happened: Hamas accepted a draft agreement on Wednesday for a ceasefire in Gaza that includes the release of several hostages, according to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/43011383/israel-gaza-ceasefire-hostage-exchange">multiple reports</a>. 
The agreement follows months of negotiations and paves the way for a potential end to the ongoing war in the Middle East that began about 15 months ago. The verbal agreement also comes just days before President-elect Donald Trump&#8217;s inauguration. 
&#8220;We have a deal for the hostages in the Middle East. They will be released shortly. Thank you!&#8221; Trump&nbsp;said in a post on Truth Social.
The deal reportedly includes a six-week ceasefire and the release of 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners. Israel still needs to ratify the deal, but a vote is expected by Thursday.

Defense Stocks Fall On Gaza Ceasefire While Broader Market Rallies: What's Going On?

JP Morgan notes that the management believes each TV franchise has the potential to generate over $3 billion in value.
The analyst views Denali Therapeutics as being in the early stages of unlocking the full potential of its BBB TV platform across various applications, maintaining the stock&#8217;s Overweight rating.
Ahead of the conference, DNL310 received Breakthrough Therapy Designation in Hunter Syndrome and is on track to file a BLA for accelerated approval in early 2025. Based on this timeline, JP Morgan expects a potential late-2025/early 2026 launch.

To support this, they expanded the Phase I/II trial from two to five cohorts, aiming for a faster approval pathway. Management estimates a global patient population of over 1,500.
JP Morgan also notes that Denali Therapeutics has a manufacturing facility. While it won&#8217;t be used for the commercial launch of Tivi in Hunter syndrome, it is expected to support the company&#8217;s other programs.
As of September 30, 2024, cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities were approximately $1.28 billion. Scholar Rock Sets Sights on $2 Billion Apitegromab Revenue Amid Spinal Muscular Atrophy Market Growth

Just before the JP Morgan healthcare conference, Eli Lilly and Co&nbsp;(NYSE:&nbsp;LLY) announced that it expects 2024 full-year worldwide revenue to be approximately&nbsp;$45.0 billion, representing a 32% growth compared to the previous year versus the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42976923/eli-lilly-expects-around-55-billion-sales-from-weight-lossdiabetes-drugs-with-overall-topline-growth-of-32-issues-2025-forecast" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $45.50 billion</a>.
The company's expected 2024 revenue is&nbsp;$400 million, or about 3%, below the guidance range issued during the&nbsp;third-quarter earnings. The guidance includes approximately&nbsp;$3.5 billion&nbsp;for Mounjaro and $1.9 billion&nbsp;for Zepbound.
During the conference, David Ricks outlined two reasons for the guidance update:

<li>The diabetes GLP market, in December, outperforms the rest of the quarter and in year this did not happen&#8230;The CEO said this could be just a guess. The company said it did not predict it. "This year that didn't happen in GLP-1," said Ricks, who speculated that changes in Medicare Part D and insurance edits have prevented patients from doubling up their prescriptions at the end of the year to avoid deductible costs early in the following year."</li>
<li>Stocking levels were a big discussion during Q3 results. The company dropped about 8 selling days in that quarter alone. The company expected a buildback at the end of the year because every year, a couple of days of buildback happen, and it did not happen this year.</li>

Regarding the guidance approach, the CEO noted, "The scale of this business and the way it's been growing, the consumer part of it, along with the stocking dynamics, it's just been a learning [experience] for us," Ricks said. "Our forecasters really nailed the rest of the portfolio. We don't have a problem with forecasting. It's just, this market is quite different."
Goldman analyst Chris Shibutani writes, "We expect this preliminary 4Q results to heighten concerns relating to underlying demand dynamics, which initially emerged at a broader level amongst investors during the 3Q results and guidance update."
