On September 5, 2024, U. S. Steel, along with the United Steelworkers union ("USW") and Wheeling-Nippon, has filed antidumping and countervailing duty petitions with the United States Department of Commerce ("DOC") and the United States International Trade Commission ("ITC"), on imports of corrosion-resistant steel ("CORE") from Australia, Brazil, Canada1, Mexico, Netherlands, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.

Turkey&#8217;s stock market dipped on Monday while government bond yields jumped, following a resounding defeat for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's&nbsp;ruling Justice and Development party (AKP) in this weekend&#8217;s local elections.
The main opposition Republican People&#8217;s party (CHP) scored wins in Turkey&#8217;s five biggest cities — Istanbul, capital Anakara, Izmir, Bursa and Antalya — leaving Erdoğan facing his biggest political setback since he came to power as prime minister in 2003.
Markets don&#8217;t tend to like change, unless change is desperately needed — and with inflation running close to 70%, investors appeared agree with the voters. Equity investors remained upbeat, while the lira currency gained. Bond yields jumped, however, pushing prices lower. 
<ul>
<li>The country&#8217;s main stock index, the BIST 100, initially dipped 0.5%, then turned 0.7% higher.</li>
<li>On the foreign exchange market the lira climbed 1.2% against the dollar.</li>
<li>Bond yields jumped, with the benchmark 10-year yield adding 152 basis points to 26.7%.</li>
<li>The iShares MSCI Turkey ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TUR#NYSE">TUR</a>), the only exchange-traded fund (ETF) that offers exclusive exposure to Turkish shares, gained 2.1% in early trade.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Istanbul And Ankara Defeats For Erdoğan</h3>
In Istanbul, Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who first won the city from the AKP in 2019, held on for the CHP, winning by 10 percentage points.
&#8220;Istanbul has delivered its message,&#8221; İmamoğlu told supporters gathered in the main city square. &#8220;The era of one person's tutelage is over.&#8221;
In Ankara, the opposition&#8217;s win was even more emphatic, as Mayor Mansur Yavas held the city by securing more than 60% of the vote.
Analysts saw the defeat for Erdoğan as a major pushback by voters against the AKP&#8217;s economic record as the rate of inflation in Turkey nears 70%.
Erdoğan served as prime minister between 2003-2014 and, under his presidency since 2014, he presided over a 2017 constitutional referendum that dissolved the senior role of prime minister, leaving the president as the main source of power, following his defeat of an attempted military coup in July 2016.
However, the weekend&#8217;s local election results are the first time Erdoğan&#8217;s party, described generally has hardline right, although the AKP denies it is Islamist, has suffered a national defeat.
The AKP held on to many of its stronghold districts in the center and east of the country, but Erdoğan acknowledged it had not gone well. He stopped short of marking it down as a defeat, however, calling it &#8220;a turning point.&#8221;
Although his current presidential term, due to end in 2028, is set to be his last under constitutional law, some political analysts were expecting further constitutional reforms to allow him to run for a further term had the results at these local elections gone better.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">U.S. Related Stocks</h3>
<ul>
<li>The iShares MSCI Turkey ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TUR#NYSE">TUR</a>), which holds stocks in the country&#8217;s major listed companies — including some that have American Depository Receipts on over-the-counter exchanges in the U.S. — was up 2.1%.</li>
<li>Among the ETF&#8217;s biggest stocks, Koc Holdings AS (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KHOLY#OTC">KHOLY</a>), an industrial and financial conglomerate controlled by the Koc family, was up 1.7%.</li>
<li>Akbank Turk Anonim Sirketi (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AKBTY#OTC">AKBTY</a>), Turkey&#8217;s largest financial services group gained 5.8%.</li>
<li>Ford Otomotiv Sanayi AS (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOVSY#OTC">FOVSY</a>), a motor manufacturer that is jointly owned by Koc Holdings and Ford Motor Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>), was unmoved.</li>
<li>Turk Hava Yollari AO (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TKHVY#OTC">TKHVY</a>), the domestic listed name for Turkish Airlines, was similarly flat in early trade.</li>

Turkish Stock Markets Welcome Change: Will Erdoğan Defeat Prompt Economic Reforms?

In the summer of 2019, Bora was celebrating his mother's birthday at a seaside restaurant in Istanbul when he suddenly became very ill and couldn't finish his meal.
"I woke up the next day with a high fever and terrible pain and was unable to move or eat for 10 days," recalls Bora.
It was at this point that a friend took him to an anonymous HIV testing clinic. After losing a close friend to an HIV-related condition years earlier, Bora understood the importance of taking precautions and periodically got tested.
"I was stunned to get a positive test result, but after the initial shock I knew that with the therapies available today I would be able to manage it," Bora says.
He immediately went on antiretroviral treatment and soon thereafter, the virus was no longer detected in his system.
An actor and singer by profession, Bora has since also become a peer counselor with Pozitif-iz Association - a nonprofit HIV advocacy group in Istanbul. "I want people to know the importance of testing and how early detection is key to recovery and moving forward to living a healthier life," he says.
Last fall, Bora decided to share his story more broadly with the media as Türkiye joined European HIV Testing Week for the first time since the biannual testing campaign began a decade earlier throughout the continent. During that time, Türkiye experienced a fourfold increase in HIV diagnoses over an 11-year period.
Gilead subsequently worked closely with Pozitif-iz Association and various other partners and healthcare organizations to help launch the inaugural testing week campaign in Türkiye. As the largest private funder of nonprofit HIV programs in the U.S. and the world, Gilead strives to address unmet needs and help ensure people receive the HIV care and services they need.
"More than 27,000 free, anonymous tests have been provided to healthcare organizations by Gilead," says Çiğdem Şimsek, founder of Pozitif-iz Association. Those diagnosed with HIV were referred for antiretroviral treatment, which is reimbursed under the national health care system.
According to the government's figures, more than 40,000 people are now living with HIV in Türkiye, a figure Çiğdem attributes to a climate of stigma, fear, misinformation and lack of awareness and education. Young people, she says, don't have sufficient access to sex and reproductive health education in the schools so they don't know how to protect themselves against sexually transmitted diseases like HIV.
A recent modeling study by Assistant Professor Emine Yaylali of Istanbul Technical University projects that the numbers of people living with HIV could swell to 2.4 million people by 2040 if the trend continues.
"These are dramatic numbers, especially if you consider we're a nation of some 80 million people," says Çiğdem. "There's an urgent need to increase testing centers and build awareness in key groups." Due to this urgency, Türkiye plans to participate in the HIV testing weeks held twice a year, with the next one taking place in May.
Bora does his part to respond to the need by answering calls that come in through the peer counseling hotline. Many of the more than 5,000 calls fielded by Pozitif-iz Association last year were from people who are afraid that they will be spurned by a spouse, family member or a friend if they are diagnosed.
"They shouldn't despair and live in fear," he says. "I'm in a good position to tell them HIV is no longer a death sentence. Instead, it can be very manageable if detected and treated early."
