While the S&amp;P 500 Index continues its post-election surge, breaking through key resistance levels, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/nasdaq-100">the NASDAQ 100</a> is struggling to keep up.
This catch-up is prompting JPMorgan analyst Jason Hunter to ask: Is this a shift in market leadership or a temporary pause for the tech-heavy index?
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">S&amp;P 500 Breaks Out, NASDAQ 100 Stalls</h1>

After the S&amp;P 500 re-accelerated through April's channel resistance and the 5850-5878 highs post-election, the index remains firmly bullish, with key support holding in the 5600s. The next resistance levels are now pegged at 6166 and 6194. Meanwhile, the NASDAQ 100 has faced a roadblock, unable to surpass its August rebound high. 
Hunter highlights that despite a broad market rally, the NASDAQ has underperformed, suggesting a potential leadership shift away from tech.
This divergence between the two indices is critical. If the NASDAQ 100 fails to break through its recent range, it would further support the idea that a regime change is in the cards — one where sectors outside of tech, like communication services, could be driving the market forward.

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Communication Services Steals The Spotlight</h1>
Interestingly, while the NASDAQ 100 as a whole struggles, the Communication Services sector has been leading the charge in the index's breakout. Good news for investors in the iShares U.S. Telecommunications ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IYZ#NYSE">IYZ</a>) and the SPDR S&amp;P Telecom ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XTL#NYSE">XTL</a>)
Tech and semiconductor stocks have lagged, clustered just below resistance. Relevant for investors in the Vanguard Information Technology ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VGT#NYSE">VGT</a>), the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>), the Invesco QQQ Trust Series I (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) and the Invesco NASDAQ 100 ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQM#NASDAQ">QQQM</a>).
Hunter's outlook suggests that in the coming weeks these hardware-oriented stocks may get "dragged higher" if the broader market rally continues. The question remains: Will they catch up, or will they continue to underperform as the rally unfolds?
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Semiconductor Struggles: A Key Test For Tech's Future</h1>
Semiconductors, once at the heart of tech's dominance, have been particularly sluggish. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) has faced stiff resistance at the 5397 July peak and the 5537 78.6% retracement level.

While it has managed to hold above the 4997 200-day moving average, Hunter is closely watching whether these resistance levels will break.
If the semiconductor sector can't clear this hurdle, it would signal a continuation of the underperformance that has characterized the group since mid-summer. 
On the other hand, if bullish momentum drags semiconductors through these barriers, it could fuel a catch-up rally in tech stocks, reversing the trend of broad market leadership shifting to other sectors.
Investors in the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMH#NASDAQ">SMH</a>), the iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) and the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3x Shares (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXL#NASDAQ">SOXL</a>) should remain wary of their holdings.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Will Tech Stage A Comeback?</h1>
Despite these challenges, Hunter remains optimistic that the post-election bullish momentum could eventually carry tech stocks, particularly semiconductors, back into the leadership role they held for much of the 2022-2024 rally. 
But if semiconductors continue to falter, and the broader market continues to rally without them, it could confirm that the days of tech dominance are coming to an end — at least for the near term.
For now, Hunter is watching for any breakouts in the tech sector, especially in semiconductors, to see if they can reclaim their former leadership position. 
The key levels to watch are the 5397 July gap for the SOX Index and the 21433-22306 range for the NASDAQ 100.

Apple's Q3 Smartphone Sales Slip Despite Strong iPhone 16 Demand, Market Share Dropped Slightly

Beginning Monday evening, Apple offered a 500-yuan voucher for all iPhone 16 models, with the base iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Max starting at 5,499 yuan and 9,499 yuan, respectively, SCMP <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3283270/apples-iphone-16-sees-price-cuts-chinese-online-platforms-singles-day-promotions?module=perpetual_scroll_0&amp;pgtype=article" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>.

The discounting is partly due to Apple Intelligence&#8217;s on-device AI system not supporting Chinese until next year.
Tmall has also introduced a trade-in subsidy of up to 1,100 yuan, allowing customers to save as much as 1,600 yuan on iPhone 16 purchases. JD.com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JD#NASDAQ">JD</a>) announced a similar discount, offering a free AppleCare+ subscription for the iPhone 16&#8217;s base and Plus models. PDD Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PDD#NASDAQ">PDD</a>) Pinduoduo further slashed prices, with the 256GB iPhone 16 Pro Max now priced at 9,199 yuan.
Riding the success of its 5G comeback, Huawei Technologies Co outpaced Apple in mainland smartphone sales in August for the first time in 46 months, SCMP cites CINNO Research.
<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/10/41399541/apple-iphone-16-sees-20-sales-surge-in-china-but-ai-absence-prompts-early-price-cuts" rel="noreferrer noopener">Prior reports indicated</a> that Pinduoduo and Taobao were slashing the prices of the iPhone 16 series before its official release due to its&nbsp;lack of AI features.
Pinduoduo started selling the iPhone 16 Plus with 512 gigabytes of storage at a 10% discount and the 128GB iPhone 16 at an 11% discount. Both Pinduoduo and Taobao marketplace have slapped a 4% discount on the 256GB version of the high-end iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Needham&nbsp;analyst Laura Martin expects the iPhone to constitute 89%- 96% of Apple&#8217;s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/41005053/apple-iphone-to-fuel-96-of-2025-revenue-analyst-says-a-safer-bet-than-ai-heavy-amazon-alphabet-micro" rel="noreferrer noopener">fiscal 2025 revenue</a>.
Apple&nbsp;stock gained 37% in the last 12 months. Reportedly, Apple will transition to an edge-to-edge screen, removing the old home button design. The new SE phone will likely support Apple Intelligence.
Needham&nbsp;analyst Laura Martin&nbsp;expects 89%- 96% of Apple&#8217;s 2025 revenue to depend <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/41005053/apple-iphone-to-fuel-96-of-2025-revenue-analyst-says-a-safer-bet-than-ai-heavy-amazon-alphabet-micro" rel="noreferrer noopener">on iPhone sales</a>, underscoring the importance of Apple&#8217;s smartphone strategy.

This surge was fueled by a remarkable $691 billion in inflows this year alone, as <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-09-27/wall-street-s-etf-assets-hit-10-trillion-milestone-amid-frenzy?srnd=phx-latest&amp;sref=TBDibEcD&amp;leadSource=uverify%20wall">reported</a> by Bloomberg. 
This impressive surge has set the stage for a record-breaking year, with ETF flows on track to shatter the previous record of $900 billion in inflows.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">VOO, VGT Outshine SPY In Fund Flows</h1>
According to ETF.com <a href="https://www.etf.com/etfanalytics/etf-fund-flows-tool">data</a>, as of the end of Aug.2024, the market saw a robust performance, with a total of $71 billion pouring into ETFs during the month. Leading the charge were heavyweights such as the Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) and the Vanguard Information Tech ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VGT#NYSE">VGT</a>), while the SPDR S&amp;P 500 (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) experienced notable outflows.
As investors diversify their portfolios, it's clear that ETFs are becoming the go-to investment vehicle.

Launched on 05/08/2007, the First Trust Technology AlphaDEX ETF (ARCA:FXL) is a smart beta exchange traded fund offering broad exposure to the Technology ETFs category of the market.
<h2>What Are Smart Beta ETFs?</h2>
For a long time now, the ETF industry has been flooded with products based on market capitalization weighted indexes, which are designed to represent the broader market or a particular market segment.
Investors who believe in market efficiency should consider market cap indexes, as they replicate market returns in a low-cost, convenient, and transparent way.

The ETF has a beta of 1.14 and standard deviation of 25.32% for the trailing three-year period, making it a medium risk choice in the space. With about 103 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk.

What's Going On With AMD Stock On Wednesday?

Undeterred by early August volatility, investors poured a staggering $75 billion into U.S. exchange-traded funds in August, a fivefold increase compared to the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">same period last year.</a>
According to Bloomberg data, the strong August inflows into ETFs have pushed the year-to-date total to over $600 billion, putting 2024 on track to potentially challenge the all-time record of $911 billion in inflows, set in 2021 — a year before the Federal Reserve initiated its rate hike cycle.
Athanasios Psarofagis, an ETF analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, highlighted that investors took advantage of the early August market dip to increase their equity ETF holdings. Additionally, there was a notable surge in demand for bond-related ETFs and small-cap ETFs as investors anticipate the start of the Federal Reserve's rate cuts.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">ETF Market Nears $10 Trillion In Total Value</h3>
Bloomberg data reveals the total value of ETFs is approaching the $10-trillion mark, representing nearly one-third of the total value of all investment funds in circulation. Passive ETFs dominate this space with $8.7 trillion in assets, while actively managed ETFs have grown by 30% this year to $783 billion.
Both fixed-income and equity ETFs have seen strong inflows, with fixed-income products attracting $187 billion and equity ETFs $367 billion so far in 2024. 
Todd Sohn, an ETF strategist at Strategas, said bond ETFs have particularly benefited from an array of new offerings, including actively managed funds. Bond ETFs have attracted $100 billion over the last three months, surpassing the inflows seen during the early pandemic-recovery period in 2020.
Bitcoin-based ETFs have also gained traction, with net inflows exceeding $17 billion so far this year. Leveraged and inverse funds based on single companies have accumulated more than $9 billion in assets.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) shares may not rise very much when the tech giant debuts the iPhone 16 on Monday because much of the anticipation is already baked into the stock, but the new phone should give some <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40680904/7-products-apple-will-likely-discontinue-next-week-after-iphone-16-launch">legs to the stock </a>over the next year, according to a tech expert. 
"I think the announcement is typically going to be a disappointment," Deepwater Asset Management managing partner Gene Munster told Benzinga on Tuesday. 
"I don't expect it to trade up on the event."
Munster&#8217;s expectation is the shares will start rising considerably after the company reports its third-quarter earnings in late October because consumers and investors will have had time to explore the iPhone&#8217;s expected artificial intelligence features, he said. 
&#8220;I think they&#8217;re really gonna catch on,&#8221; Munster said.
&#8220;Once that starts happening into next year, that&#8217;s when the excitement really goes, but this is going to be the disappointment before the excitement. I think this year is really going to be a great 12 months for Apple.&#8221;

Sales for iPhone may grow as much as 15% next year versus Wall Street expectations of 7% because the iPhone 16 may convince 10% of iPhone users who planned on upgrading in 2026 to do so next year, he said. 
&#8220;I think it&#8217;s conservative to say 10% because there&#8217;s a group that&#8217;s just going upgrade this year because it&#8217;s time. Their phone is five years old they&#8217;re just gonna get a new phone.&#8221; 
The higher revenue will move the stock higher, Munster said, but he declined to predict a number. 
The question is how many users who initially planned to upgrade in 2026, 2027 and 2028 will go for the iPhone 16 in 2025 as a result of the new AI features, Munster said.
&#8220;These pools are so massive that just a small increase in that uptake has a measurable impact on revenue growth,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;I think the bottom line is if &nbsp;the AI features are as exciting as I believe, they&#8217;re going to have a massive wave of upgrades.&#8221;
Munster recalled iPhone sales growing 52% 10 years ago when the iPhone 6 came out with a bigger screen.
"Small changes to features can have big impact to growth,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;That&#8217;s the key question. Do you think these features are going to spur big upgrade cycle?&#8221;
AAPL Price Action: Apple lost 2.72% in Tuesday&#8217;s session, closing at $222.77. Exchange-traded funds that hold the stock performed as follows:

Intel's $10B Cost Cut Seen as Necessary but Not Enough for Competitive Edge: Analyst

The <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/24/08/40142331/chip-stocks-staring-at-another-bloodbath-as-intel-tumbles-nvidia-dips-4-asml-crumbles-over-6-whats-a">tech space took a tumble</a> in the week ended Aug. 2, with the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) declining more than 5% and underperforming the S&amp;P 500 Index &#8211; a measure of broader market performance. Here&#8217;s a summary of what dragged the sector this week and a perspective on where these stocks are headed into the near- and medium-term.
Mixed Tech Earnings, Geopolitics Weigh: Tech stocks started the week on a cautious but a winning note as traders awaited earnings reports from a slew of mega-cap tech names. They pulled back notably on Tuesday, dragged by some tech earnings disappointments, and caution ahead of imminent catalysts.
Strong earnings report from Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) fueled a rebound by tech stocks on Wednesday but macro concerns reignited the selling pressure on Thursday. Separate reports on the manufacturing sector and the job market proved to be the undoing of the sector, with traders largely ignoring Meta Platform, Inc.&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) fairly robust earnings.
The selling pressure extended to Friday&#8217;s session as Intel Corp.&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INTC#NASDAQ">INTC</a>) earnings miss and reports of a potential Federal Trade Commission probe into high-flying Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) sapped risk appetite of traders toward tech stocks.
Commenting on the week&#8217;s tech sell-off, Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said, &#8220;The perfect storm panicked tech sell-off has now gained steam after the weaker jobs report&#8230;fueled the R word fears and worries the Fed is now too late in its cutting cycle with tech stocks in the center of this Category 5 storm sell- off.&#8221;

The Nasdaq 100 Index, which tracks the performance of 100 biggest non-financial tech stocks, has entered the correction territory following the week&#8217;s sell-off. From a July 11&#8217;s intraday high of 18,671.07, the Nasdaq 100 has lost a little over 10%. A pullback of over 10% from a recent high is called a correction in stock market parlance.

What Lies Ahead? Ives says that this tech bull market and historic run for tech stocks isn&#8217;t over. &#8220;This is just a white knuckle moment in a multi-year bull run for tech stocks that need hand holding,&#8221; he said.
The analyst called for soft-landing and expects the Fed to kickstart a major cutting cycle the next 18 months. 
Ives&#8217; optimism on tech stocks is premised mainly on his confidence in the artificial intelligence technology.
&#8220;We strongly believe this is still the early innings of a $1 trillion AI Cap Ex cycle that will be a 4th Industrial Revolution fueling the broader tech sector for years to come with accelerated growth rates across the tech ecosystem,&#8221; he said.
&nbsp;This June quarter earnings season validated Wedbush&#8217;s bull thesis and field checks around the massive cloud buildouts, Ivs said. 
&#8220;While we clearly get the worries/fears the US consumer is weakening (Amazon consumer softer print), Fed is late to the game, hard landing/hello again bear thesis returning&#8230;we focus on tech spending and the winners that will be front and center in this massive AI tech buildout that is still in the 2nd inning of a 9 inning game,&#8221; he said.
The prospect of the Fed embarking on rate cuts, though negative for mega-caps, may prove healthy for SMID-cap tech stocks. Also, regulatory overhang is in the spotlight in the wake of the presidential election. A Republicans victory is seen by many as resulting in a far less stringent regulatory environment.
Palantir Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NYSE">PLTR</a>) , another AI-levered name, is <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/08/40129511/palantir-faces-critical-prove-me-moment-analyst-says-commercial-growth-will-be-star">on track to report earnings in the unfolding week, </a>potentially offering insights into the strength of the AI wave. On the economic front, things will likely be a little bit slow, with two service sector activity readings and jobless claims among the notable releases.
The QQQ ended Friday&#8217;s session down 2.37% at $448.75, according to <a href="https://benzinga.grsm.io/register174">Benzinga Pro data</a>.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) once again <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/08/40092219/apple-meta-platforms-and-3-stocks-to-watch-heading-into-thursday">offering lower prices </a>on its products for college students heading back to school in the fall through its yearly Higher Education Offer, formerly known as its Back To School promotion.
The global sales drive, which has a new name to communicate its exclusive focus on college students, began in the U.S., Canada and India in June and has been running in the U.K. and Europe since early July, MacWorld <a href="https://www.macworld.com/article/673191/apple-back-school-sale.html">reported</a>. Apple is handing out gift cards in the U.S., U.K. and Canada while giving discounts on AirPods in Europe and India.
The Higher Education Offer kicked off on June 20 and will end on Sept. 30 in the U.S., Canada and India. It began on July 3 and will stop on Oct. 21 in the U.K. and Europe.

The deal, which usually ends about a month after the first semester, has already taken place in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and South Korea from January to mid-March. 
Higher Education Offer deals include getting $100 and $150 gift card for buying Mac computers and iPad tablets, a 20% discount off AppleCare technical support services and an Apple Pencil Pro for $119.
Apple&#8217;s Education Store also offers product discounts to students all year long.
Price Action: Apple Inc., which is scheduled to release third-quarter earnings after Thursday&#8217;s close, rose 1.01% to $224.32 in Thursday&#8217;s premarket trading, while exchange-traded funds that hold the stock also trended upward.

Apple Higher Education Offer Spans Globe, Gives Discounts To College Students

Goldman Sachs expects Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/07/40029731/apple-operating-in-an-alternative-universe-says-top-analyst-as-cupertinos-strategy-will-likely-w">beat analyst expectations</a> when it reports third-quarter earnings after Thursday&#8217;s closing bell.
The tech giant should exceed Wall Street consensus of $1.33 earnings per share (EPS) by 3 cents on Thursday, according to Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng. He predicted revenue for the quarter to come in at $85.1 billion, up 4% from $81.8 billion in revenue posted a year ago.
&#8220;While Apple's iPad market share has lagged in recent quarters relative to history, we expect the recently announced new iPad models (May 7) should benefit market share in F3Q24,&#8221; he wrote in a note.
&#8220;The new iPad models represented the first new iPads since October 2022.&#8221;
Goldman Sachs maintains a Buy rating on Apple because it believes the company&#8217;s focus on slower product revenue growth does not reflect its growth in services and product innovation, Ng said.

&#8220;The majority of gross profit growth over the next five years should be driven by services, which should mark an inflection point in the services investment narrative,&#8221; he wrote.
&#8220;The durability of Apple's installed base and the resulting revenue growth visibility from attaching more services and products is what underpins the recurring revenue &#8212; or Apple-as-a-Service &#8212; opportunity.&#8221;
But Apple is exposed to downside risks such as weakening consumer demand for products and services, supply chain disruption and growing competition, Ng said.
&#8220;Although Apple is the largest company and the most well resourced among its competitors, it is not the market leader in every single business line,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;For instance, in video streaming, it faces several key competitors that invest more heavily than Apple in content.&#8221;
Price Action: Apple was down 0.3% to $217.54 at the time of publication Tuesday.
The decline in Apple shares also impacted related ETFs:
