A political firestorm erupted on Wall Street Wednesday as speculations surged that President Donald Trump could fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell before his term ends, reigniting fears <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/federal-reserve">over central bank independence. </a>



Powell's current term runs until May 2026. Legal scholars and market participants have long debated whether a sitting president has the authority to fire a Fed chair without evidence of misconduct—a move that would almost certainly spark a constitutional crisis and rattle global markets.



If Trump goes through with firing Powell, it would mark the first time in modern U.S. history that a president attempts to remove a Federal Reserve chair without cause. 



On Kalshi, a CFTC-regulated prediction market platform, the probability of Powell being ousted by the end of 2025 has climbed to over 20%, its highest level since April.

This uptick in political risk comes after a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/16/us/politics/trump-powell-firing-letter.html">New York Times report</a> revealed that Trump had shown a draft letter firing Powell during a closed-door meeting with House Republicans.



Trump reportedly waved the letter in the Oval Office, polling GOP lawmakers on whether he should act.



While the president later claimed he had "no imminent plans" to remove Powell, he openly admitted, "I talked about the concept of firing him. I said, ‘what do you think?' Almost every one of them said I should."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Producer Inflation Softened In June</h2>



On Wednesday, the Trump-Powell feud escalated further after the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) report revealed that inflationary pressures <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/07/46440481/producer-prices-rise-less-than-expected-inflation">are continuing to ease</a>. 



U.S. producer prices were flat in June, missing estimates for a 0.2% gain and down from a 0.3% increase in May. The decline was driven by a 0.1% drop in services costs, with a sharp 4.1% fall in traveler accommodation services leading the slide. Prices also declined in retail auto parts, airline fares, and food and alcohol wholesaling. 



Goods prices rose 0.3%, mainly due to an uptick in communication equipment, gasoline, electricity, and some food items. On a year-over-year basis, PPI cooled to 2.3%—its slowest pace since September 2024—while core PPI came in flat for the month and slowed to 2.6% annually, both below expectations.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Accusations Over $2.5 Billion Fed Renovation</h2>



Adding fuel to the fire, Trump and his allies—including Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte—have started targeting the Fed's $2.5 billion renovation project, suggesting it may provide grounds for Powell's removal "for cause."



In a post on X, Pulte wrote: "Who spends $2.5 billion on a renovation? I believe there is strong legal basis to terminate Jerome Powell, and for cause. He has destroyed the independence of the Fed."



A day earlier, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Bloomberg TV that a "formal process" has begun to identify Powell's successor, though he later clarified that firing Powell was "highly unlikely unless he has to leave for fraud."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Who Might Replace Powell?</h2>



As speculation builds over Powell's possible removal, attention is quickly turning to who could take the helm at the Fed. 



According to Kalshi odds, Kevin Hassett leads the field with a 34% chance of being nominated, followed by Kevin Warsh at 32%, Christopher Waller at 18%, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent at 14%.



Each candidate brings a different policy stance, with both Hassett and Warsh seen as more aligned with Trump's preference for looser monetary policy—a stance that could significantly shift the Fed&#8217;s current trajectory if Powell is ousted.

Trump-Powell Feud Heats Up: Odds Of Fed Chair Ouster Spike

Sarepta Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SRPT#NASDAQ">SRPT</a>) shares are soaring in Wednesday&#8217;s after-hours session after the company announced a strategic restructuring and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/07/b46454162/sarepta-therapeutics-announces-strategic-restructuring-and-pipeline-prioritization-plan-to-maintai">cost-cutting measures</a>.



What To Know: After the market close on Wednesday, Sarepta Therapeutics introduced a strategic restructuring plan that involves focusing on high-value, high-impact programs and supporting long-term financials.



Sarepta said it initiated immediate changes to reduce operating expenses, including a 36% workforce reduction and a pipeline reprioritization.



The changes are expected to drive approximately $400 million in annual cost reductions and lower the company&#8217;s average annual research and development expenses and selling, general and administrative expenses to between $800 million and $900 million starting in 2026. Sarepta anticipates $100 million in cost savings through the end of 2025.



&#8220;Faced with environmental changes, we have decided to act decisively, implementing a focused strategy to ensure Sarepta remains a vibrant, financially enduring, patient-centric organization dedicated to improving the lives of those with rare genetic diseases,&#8221; said Doug Ingram, CEO of Sarepta Therapeutics. 



&#8220;These changes will ensure we remain a financially strong and profitable organization built on a sharpened and focused strategy.&#8221;



In connection with the announcement, Sarepta reported preliminary financial results for the second quarter. The company said it expects to report second-quarter net product revenue of $513 million. 



Sarepta had $850 million of cash, cash equivalents, restricted cash and investments as of June 30. 



The company also announced several new executive leadership changes, including the appointment of Ian Estepan as president and COO and Ryan Wong as CFO. Louise Rodino-Klapac was named president of R&amp;D and technical operations, Rachael Potter was appointed as chief scientific officer and Patrick Moss was named chief commercial officer.



SRPT Price Action: <a href="http://benzinga.com/quote/srpt">Sarepta Therapeutics shares</a> were up 38.08% at $25.38 in after-hours trading at the time of publication Wednesday, according to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>.

Sarepta Therapeutics Stock Is Surging After The Bell: What's Going On?

This morning, I woke up to the sound of pounding rain on the roof of my bus and a generator that made me decide to take the day off. Add in some flash flooding, a Wi-Fi signal riding on Starlink, and it's already been a day to remember.



But even with all that going on, I had to get a story out to you because we've officially entered one of my favorite times of the year: earnings season.



This isn't just any earnings season, either. It's the second quarter (Q2) earnings, when the biggest batch of reports hits. But while most traders are busy guessing whether a stock will beat or miss expectations, we're going to take a different approach.



So today, I want to walk you through how I'm trading earnings this quarter, the patterns I'm spotting, and the stocks I've got on my radar right now.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Most Traders Blow It on Earnings</h2>



Let's get something out of the way: trading earnings the day before the announcement is a bad idea.



That's what I call "meme trading" or the "Robinhood crowd" mentality. You buy a call because you hope the stock will go up—or a put if you think it'll tank—and hold through earnings. That's a quick way to lose money, even if you're right on direction.



Why? Because of the volatility crush.



Implied volatility usually surges leading into earnings. But once the report drops? Volatility falls off a cliff—often faster than the stock price can move in your favor. That means even if you're "right," you can still lose money because the time premium gets obliterated.



So, what's the better play? Trade the setup, not the outcome.



That means you want to get in one to two weeks before earnings, not the day before. And you want to get out before the report hits, selling to someone else who's willing to pay top dollar for all that pumped-up volatility.



I call it "scalping the implied volatility wave."



Now, if I can pair that volatility ramp with a strong directional pattern, that's where the real edge comes in. Some stocks tend to drift higher (or lower) into earnings like clockwork. And when price and volatility rise together, that's our signal to strike, which brings me to a few setups I've got my eye on.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Pan American Silver</h2>



I've been watching Pan American Silver (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PAAS#NYSE">PAAS</a>) for a while. Over the last four quarters, PAAS has sold off in the week leading up to earnings, and each time, implied volatility has spiked. That's a textbook setup for put buyers.



Now, earnings aren't coming until August 6, but that gives us time to prepare. I'll be watching closely for the next dip and any IV surge. If we see both, I'll be looking to grab short-term options and ride them for a few days before the announcement.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">AbbVie</h2>



AbbVie (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ABBV#NYSE">ABBV</a>) is the opposite of PAAS. This one has a bullish pattern leading up to earnings, with the stock moving higher ahead of the last few reports. Same deal—volatility ramps, price climbs, and that creates a sweet spot for call options.



Earnings drop on July 30, so again, we've got time. I'll be eyeing this one about 10 days out, especially if we see any early pullbacks that offer a cheaper entry.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why This Matters And What To Do Next</h2>



A lot of traders think earnings are binary: either the stock beats expectations and pops, or it misses and crashes. But that's not how the smart money trades.



We're not gambling on outcomes, we're stacking probabilities.



We're looking for patterns that have played out multiple times, we're aligning with the natural volatility cycle, and we're getting out before the crowd even shows up.



Remember, I track the top 325 stocks every quarter to find these patterns. PAAS and ABBV are just two names with strong historical setups—but they're not the only ones. The more you study these moves, the easier it gets to spot consistent winners.



This week, I'll be running more scans and breaking down a few ETF setups as well (seasonality is back in play). And of course, I'll be keeping one eye on the headlines. After all, even a strong earnings setup can get shaken up by the 24/7 news cycle.

My Top 2 Earnings Picks For This Earnings Season

United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UAL#NASDAQ">UAL</a>) reported second-quarter financial results after the market close on Wednesday. Here&#8217;s a rundown <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/07/n46454110/united-airlines-reports-second-quarter-profit-sees-third-quarter-positive-inflection-in-both-suppl">of the report</a>.



Q2 Earnings: United reported second-quarter revenue of $15.27 billion, missing the&nbsp;<a href="http://benzinga.com/quote/UAL/earnings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus estimate</a>&nbsp;of $15.35 billion. The airline company reported second-quarter adjusted earnings of $3.87 per share, beating analyst estimates of $3.77 per share, according to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro</a>.



Premium cabin revenue was up 5.6% year-over-year and basic economy revenue climbed 1.7%. Loyalty revenue was up 8.7% year-over-year and cargo revenue rose 3.8%.



Capacity was up 5.9% on a year-over-year basis. TRASM (total revenue per available seat mile) was down 4% while CASM (cost per available seat mile) increased 0.6% year-over-year.



United generated $2.2 billion in operating cash flow and $1.1 billion of free cash flow in the second quarter. The company ended the period with $18.6 in total liquidity and $27.1 billion in total debt and finance lease obligations.



&#8220;Our&nbsp;second-quarter&nbsp;performance was more proof that the United Next strategy is working. I am extremely proud of the team for executing a strong operation and navigating through a volatile macroeconomic period, while still growing earnings and pre-tax margin for the first half of the year,&#8221; said&nbsp;Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines. 



&#8220;Importantly, United saw a positive shift in demand beginning in early July, and, like 2024, anticipates another inflection in industry supply in mid-August.&#8221;



Outlook:&nbsp;United lowered its full-year 2025 earnings outlook. The company now expects full-year earnings of $9 to $11 per share, down from prior guidance of $11.50 to $13.50 per share. Analysts are forecasting full-year earnings of $10.05 per share.



&#8220;Beginning in early July, United has seen a sequential six point acceleration in demand and a double-digit acceleration in business demand versus the second quarter. The airline attributes this to less geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainty,&#8221; the company said.



United said it will provide guidance for the third quarter on its conference call Thursday at 10:30 a.m. ET.

United Airlines Q2 Earnings: Revenue Miss, EPS Beat, Lowered FY25 Guidance Despite 'Positive Shift In Demand' In Early July

Each year, FTSE Russell recalibrates its U.S. indexes to ensure they accurately represent the evolving market. The Russell 1000 Index, comprising the largest 1,000 U.S. companies by market cap, saw some notable additions and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/07/46313915/tom-lee-calls-robinhood-morgan-stanley-for-gen-z-draws-1980s-wall-street-broker-analogy-to-explain-fintechs-rise">exclusions in 2025.&nbsp;</a>



Reconstitution: The Russell Index reconstitution ranks among the busiest trading days of the year, as asset managers rebalance portfolios to align with the updated index components. 



This year's event set a new record when 2.5 billion shares changed hands in just 0.9 seconds, representing a staggering $102.4 billion in traded securities, according to Jeff Buchbinder, chief equity strategist at LPL Financial.

"For investors considering adjustments to their portfolios following these changes, we suggest staying patient while keeping in mind that volatility may pick up over the next few weeks around tariff headlines, incoming inflation data, the upcoming earnings season and historical seasonal weakness," Buchbinder said.&nbsp;

Volatility surged across interest rate-sensitive assets Wednesday after reports circulated that President Donald Trump may be preparing to remove Federal Reserve Chair Jerome <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/07/46430675/trump-powell-june-inflation-fed-rate-cuts">Powell from his post.</a> The rumors sparked fears over the Fed's independence, triggering a broad flight to gold and a sell-off in the U.S. dollar.



While Wall Street was mostly flat during midday trading in New York, traders were on edge, digesting the potential implications of a leadership shake-up at the central bank. Speculators are already positioning for a more dovish monetary path, anticipating that Powell&#8217;s possible ouster could accelerate future interest rate cuts.



Gold prices jumped sharply, soaring from $3,325 to over $3,377 per ounce within minutes before paring gains to around $3,350.



Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rallied 1.2% to $119,000, benefiting from dollar weakness and renewed demand for decentralized assets.



The U.S. dollar index fell 0.3%, on track to snap a four-day winning streak. At the same time, Treasury yields edged slightly lower as bond traders priced in increased political and monetary policy uncertainty.



Economic data released Wednesday added fuel to the rate-cut narrative. The <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/07/46440481/producer-prices-rise-less-than-expected-inflation">Producer Price Index was flat in June</a>, down from a 0.3% gain in May and below the 0.2% consensus forecast. On a year-over-year basis, producer prices rose 2.3%, the slowest pace since September 2024 and softer than the 2.5% economists had expected.



Core PPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was also unchanged in June. The annual rate dropped to 2.6% from a revised 3.2% in May, falling short of the 2.7% consensus.

Gold, Bitcoin Surge As Trump Eyes Powell Ouster: What's Moving Markets Wednesday?

A day after the Consumer Price Index reignited concerns over sticky inflation, Wednesday's Producer Price Index (PPI) offered <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/07/46413961/june-inflation-cpi-report">a more benign view. </a>



Producer prices were flat in June, down from May's upwardly revised 0.3% increase and coming in below the 0.2% consensus estimate. On an annual basis, PPI slowed to 2.3%, the lowest since September 2024, also weaker than the expected 2.5% and down from 2.7% in May.



Core PPI, which strips out food and energy, also was also flat during the month, softer than the 0.2% forecast. The year-over-year rate cooled to 2.6% from an upwardly revised 3.2% previously, and 0.1 percentage point below the economist consensus.



Communication equipment led gains, rising 0.8%. Prices for gasoline, electricity, poultry, meat, and tree nuts also increased. Chicken egg prices plunged 21.8%. Plastics and natural gas liquids declined.



Service prices slipped 0.1% in June, after a 0.4% rise in May. Core services fell 0.1%. Transportation dropped 0.9%, while trade margins were flat.



Hotel prices dropped 4.1%, leading the decline. Auto retailing, airline fares, and deposit services also fell. Portfolio management fees increased by 2.2%, driven by gains in machinery and apparel retailing.



The softer PPI print comes just one day after headline CPI inflation surged to 2.7%—its highest level since February—and monthly CPI rose 0.3%, marking the biggest increase in five months. 



That report gave political cover to Fed Chair Jerome Powell, who has resisted President Donald Trump's demands for immediate rate cuts.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions</h3>



Futures on major US indices edged up in the premarket trading Wednesday. Contracts on the S&amp;P 500 were 0.3% higher by 8:35 a.m. in New York. 



On Tuesday, the S&amp;P 500 – as tracked by the Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) – reached fresh record highs during the session but closed 0.4% lower. 



The U.S. dollar index – as closely represented by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) – slipped 0.1%. 



Treasury yields slipped after cooler-than-expected producer price data eased concerns about building inflation pressures.

June Producer Prices Flat—Is Inflation Finally Cooling?

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) surged to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/07/46404410/bitcoin-shatters-all-time-high-to-hit-123-000-as-ethereum-cracks-3-000-and-xrp-taps-3">new all-time highs</a> last week, and a new poll now gauges whether it will retreat to $100,000 or rally toward $150,000 next.



What Happened: Bitcoin reached an all-time high of $123,091.61 on July 14. The milestone underscored the optimism felt by investors ahead of what Congress members dubbed "Crypto Week,&#8221; in which <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/crypto/cryptocurrency/25/07/46424764/trump-wishes-bitcoin-ethereum-xrp-happy-crypto-week-it-is-all-part-of-make-america-great-again">several cryptocurrency-related bills</a> are up for vote.



Bitcoin pulled back on Tuesday as the bills failed to gain traction in Congress, but it remains ahead of levels seen last week.



Benzinga recently polled its users on social media to ask where Bitcoin could trade next.



"With Bitcoin at record highs, what's the more likely move from here?" Benzinga asked on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/benzinga/?hl=en">its Instagram page.</a>



The results were:

Why It's Important: The contrasting results of the polls and slim majorities could indicate that investors are divided on what will happen to Bitcoin in the second half of 2025.



This follows <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/crypto/cryptocurrency/25/06/46053846/will-bitcoin-hit-new-all-time-highs-after-dip-under-100k-heres-what-new-poll-predicts">a June poll </a>conducted by Benzinga asking if Bitcoin would hit new all-time highs after its dip under $100,000 or would head back to the five-figure range. At the time with Bitcoin trading at $107,500, the poll was split 50%, 50%.



The price of Bitcoin would later hit new all-time highs and has yet to go below the $100,000 level since the poll was conducted.



Another&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/crypto/cryptocurrency/25/06/45871245/exclusive-bitcoin-to-hit-200k-in-2025-15-say-yes-while-many-see-new-all-time-highs-coming" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recent Benzinga poll in May&nbsp;</a>asked readers to predict the highest price Bitcoin will hit before the end of the year.



&#8220;Bitcoin hit new all-time highs of nearly $112,000 in May 2025. Do you believe this will be the top price for BTC in 2025 or will the leading cryptocurrency hit new highs later this year?" Benzinga asked.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. <li>Asset and Wealth Management revenue declined 3% to $3.78 billion due to lower returns from equity and debt investments, partially offset by higher fees and lending income. Wealth management client assets totaled approximately $1.7 trillion.</li>



<li>Platform Solutions revenue edged up 2% to $685 million, as gains in consumer platforms were offset by softer transaction banking results.</li>

Operating expenses climbed 8% to $9.24 billion, driven by higher compensation and transaction-based costs. The firm's efficiency ratio improved to 62.0% for the first half, down from 63.8% a year ago.

Louis Navellier said that the &#8220;Wall Street has finally figured out that this is how President Trump negotiates, namely by making the other side increasingly uncomfortable,&#8221; citing that stock market is largely ignoring the latest tariff news, such as 30% tariffs on the European Union (EU) and Mexico, and a whopping 50% on Brazil on Aug. 1st.



He added that &#8220;the CPI report is not a market mover, so the Producer Price Index (PPI) on Wednesday should provide more insight, especially any tariff impact on wholesale goods prices.&#8221;



Meanwhile, Ed Yardeni highlighted that the CPI report for June suggests that inflation is no longer declining toward the Fed&#8217;s 2.0% target. Instead, it might continue to hover around 3.0% for a while, as it has recently.



&#8220;Trump&#8217;s tariffs may be a contributing factor, though their impact remains debated. The core CPI inflation rate upticked to 2.9% last month, hinting that the core PCED inflation rate (at 2.7% in May) might have followed a similar trend.&#8221;



&#8220;The June CPI report reinforces the FOMC&#8217;s cautious stance,&#8221; Yardeni added.

Juneau expects this dynamic to carry into the Fed's preferred inflation metric, projecting a 0.3% monthly increase in core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) that could keep the year-over-year rate near 3% by the third quarter.



"If our PCE tracking estimate is correct, the case for the Fed to remain on hold this year (our call) would strengthen," he said.



"Inflation's not going quietly. June's 2.7% CPI reading tells us the road back to 2% won't be smooth and gives the Fed reason to pause before cutting rates," Gina Bolvin, president of Bolvin Wealth Management Group, added. 



Bill Adams, chief economist at Comerica Bank, said CPI data shows inflation is still running above target, though within range. "Core CPI has ranged from 2.8% to 3.3% since last June, and total CPI from 2.3% to 3.0%. Both currently sit at around the middle of those ranges."



Given that the unemployment rate edged lower in June, Adams said the Fed has room to wait. "There's no smoking gun forcing a rate cut in July."

Markets now widely expect the Federal Reserve to hold rates steady at its July meeting. However, rate futures still reflect hopes for two cuts in the second half of 2025, and another two in 2026—bets that look increasingly fragile as inflation proves sticky.

According to Kalshi, the leading betting platform, former Fed governor Kevin Warsh leads with a 36% chance of taking the role, followed by economist Kevin Hassett at 30%.
