What Happened: One of the major changes in its holdings during Q3 was the addition of 211,500 shares of Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) for $121.07 million, representing 3.08% of its total portfolio.
ValueAct Holdings is a hedge fund popularly known for its activist strategies, run by chief executive officer, Mason Morfit. An activist hedge fund usually follows an event-driven strategy and acquires sufficient equity to influence a company's policies, to increase company value. ValueAct has a long history of investing in technology companies and is generally considered to be more constructivist and collaborative than other activist funds.
ValueAct did not immediately respond to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga&#8217;s</a> request for comment.
In 2022, Brad Gerstner&#8216;s Altimeter Capital targeted Meta, urging the company to reduce its workforce. Gerstner articulated his concerns in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/10/29380959/meta-investor-proposes-curb-on-employees-strength-metaverse-spending">a letter titled &#8220;Time to Get Fit.</a>
ValueAct fund's specific intentions remain unclear, but CEO Morfit is reportedly supportive of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s strategic focus on advancing artificial intelligence initiatives, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/12/activist-valueact-has-1-billion-stake-in-meta-sources-say.html">according</a> to CNBC.
Why It Matters: According to its Q3 <a href="https://13f.info/13f/000141881224000021/compare/000141881224000017">13F filing</a>, ValueAct has acquired a passive stake in the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, namely, Meta. It is one of the largest companies to be targeted by an activist investor, with a market cap of nearly $1.5 trillion. The hedge fund also increased its investment in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/m-a/24/01/36471982/disney-partners-with-valueact-capital-for-strategic-counsel-in-anticipation-of-2024-shareholder-meet">The Walt Disney Co</a> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) by adding 1.33 million shares taking its total value to $718.04 million in ValueAct&#8217;s portfolio.

Apart from adding Meta, ValueAct has made some major changes to its portfolio which consists of ten holdings. The fund has increased its stake in the American video game developer Roblox Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RBLX#NYSE">RBLX</a>) by adding 7.83 million shares in Q3. It now represents 8.81% of ValueAct&#8217;s portfolio, having a total value of $448.62 million.
Live Nation Entertainment Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LYV#NYSE">LYV</a>), Visa Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/V#NYSE">V</a>) and Liberty Media Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLYVK#NASDAQ">LLYVK</a>) are other new holdings that ValueAct has added to its portfolio.

The Arena Group Holdings, Inc. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AREN#AMEX">AREN</a>) shares jumped premarket on Friday after the company delivered the first quarter of<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/11/b41989682/the-arena-group-generates-4-0-million-in-net-income-for-third-quarter-of-2024-first-ever-profitabl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> positive net income</a>.
Arena, which is home to hundreds of media brands, including TheStreet, Parade Media, Men&#8217;s Journal, Surfer, Powder and Athlon Sports, reported a net income of $4.0 million, or EPS of $0.11, in the third quarter of 2024, compared to a net loss of $11.2 million, or EPS loss of $0.47 per share a year ago quarter.
Adjusted EBITDA stood at $11.2 million compared to $3.1 million a year ago quarter. Revenue from continuing operations came in at $33.6 million, vs. $37.0 million a year ago quarter.
The company reduced quarterly operating expenses by 51% year-over-year, achieving a $13.6 million positive swing in quarterly income from continuing operations. This highlights the rapid effectiveness of its transformation plan.
The Arena Group CEO Sara Silverstein said, &#8220;We&#8217;re achieving meaningful revenue diversification, including a significant increase in e-commerce and other revenue, enabling a substantial improvement in profitability. We generated higher gross margins, returned to positive operating income, and delivered our first-ever quarter of positive net income.&#8221;
Arena&#8217;s affiliate commerce business grew 287% during the six months, driven by strong organic traffic to commerce posts and stronger partnerships with retailers who value its highly transactional audience.
The company expanded its commerce coverage while increasing revenue per post by 57% in the third quarter versus second quarter of 2024.
Arena finalized a deal to license its proprietary content management system, which also included the acquisition of multiple sites, notably the top-tier automotive platform Autoblog.
Additionally, Arena extended the maturity of its credit line with Simplify Inventions, LLC, and converted $15 million of debt into common equity.
Price Action: AREN shares are up 210% at $1.76 premarket at the last check Friday.
