Friday's trading session saw another robust rally on Wall Street, with the S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both reaching new record highs, fueled by better-than-expected third-quarter earnings <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/10/41293190/us-banks-top-q3-earnings-estimates-jpmorgan-delivers-robust-beat-financial-sector-stocks-hit-record">from major U.S. banks.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 surged past 5,800 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed above 42,800.
Leading the charge were top U.S. financial institutions, which kicked off the earnings season with strong results. JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>), Wells Fargo &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WFC#NYSE">WFC</a>), Bank of New York Mellon Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BK#NYSE">BK</a>), and BlackRock Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLK#NYSE">BLK</a>) all beat analysts&#8217; earnings expectations. The upbeat results from these banking giants triggered a rally in financial stocks, pushing the sector to an all-time high. 
Furthermore, gains spilled over to regional banks and the broader small-cap universe, as the SPDR S&amp;P Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>) and the Russell 2000 rallied 2.7% and 1.7%, respectively. 
Meanwhile, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) plunged by 8%, on track for its worst session in more than a month, with analysts expecting further declines after the lack of clear business plans for robotaxis and no updates on the lower-cost production vehicle, following the highly anticipated Robotaxi <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/10/41295072/tesla-robotaxi-day-event-more-fanfare-than-substance-8-analysts-on-cybercab-optimus">Day on Thursday.</a>
On the macroeconomic front, inflation remains in focus. Following Thursday&#8217;s hotter-than-expected Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, Friday's Producer Price Index (PPI) data also came in above forecasts, indicating a setback <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/10/41290382/producer-inflation-rises-more-than-expected-in-september-as-food-transportation-c">in the disinflationary narrative.</a>
Despite the inflation uptick, market expectations for a Federal Reserve rate cut in November remained largely unchanged. According to CME's FedWatch tool, there is still an 85% probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut next month.
In the commodities space, oil prices steadied after surging 3.5% on Thursday, amid a lack of relevant news from the Middle East front. Gold advanced 1.2%, while silver gained 1.4%.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) also posted notable gains, rising over 3% in response to the strong earnings report from BlackRock, which showed higher-than-expected fund inflows. Investors appear optimistic about continued institutional interest in cryptocurrencies.

Wall Street Marks New Highs As Bank Stocks Rally, Tesla Tumbles As Robotaxi Disappoints: What's Driving Markets Friday?

Major U.S. equity indices edged lower on Thursday following a hotter-than-expected Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation report for September and as oil prices spiked, driven by fuel disruptions caused by Hurricane Milton and rising tensions <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/middle-east">in the Middle East.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 slipped 0.2% from its record high set on Wednesday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 mirrored the decline. Small-cap stocks lagged, with the Russell 2000 dropping 0.9%.
Consumer prices rose 2.4% year-over-year in September, slightly down from August&#8217;s 2.5% rate but above the consensus estimate of 2.3%. Core inflation, which strips out the volatile energy and food categories, also came in higher than expected, ticking up from 3.2% to 3.3%.
Despite the inflation uptick, economists and investors remained broadly steadfast in their expectations of a 25-basis-point interest rate cut in November. 
In a separate report, weekly unemployment claims surged to 258,000 for the week ending Oct. 5, exceeding forecasts. The spike was likely influenced by auto industry layoffs in Michigan and disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene.
Oil prices rebounded sharply after two days of losses, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude climbing more than 3% to $75 per barrel. Natural gas prices also advanced over 2%.
Energy stocks outperformed the broader market as a result of the rally in oil prices. 
Experts, cited by Reuters, indicated that power outages in Florida, the closure of several product terminals, delayed tanker truck deliveries, and pipeline disruptions would likely keep gasoline prices elevated.
In the Middle East, Israeli forces reportedly fired on UN peacekeeping bases in southern Lebanon, resulting in injuries to two soldiers, according to UN sources. This incident occurred amid ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, a militant group based in Lebanon. The incident prompted a sharp response from Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, who summoned Israeli diplomats for an explanation.
Treasury yields remained stable, while the U.S. dollar gained modestly. Gold and silver prices both rose, with gold advancing 0.5% and silver up 1.5%. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) softened 0.4% to $60,300.

Stocks Dip As Inflation Slows Less Than Expected, Oil Prices Spike Due To Hurricane Disruptions, Middle East Tensions: What's Driving Markets Thursday?

A hotter-than-expected September Consumer Price Index inflation report, combined with a surprising spike in weekly jobless claims, weighed on major stock indices in early New York trading Thursday, while sparking diverging performances <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">among sectors</a>.
Technology and consumer discretionary stocks led the declines, while utilities outperformed, with the latter rebounding from significant losses earlier in the week.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Inflation Tops Estimates, Claims Likely Affected By Hurricane Helene</h3>
The annual headline inflation rate dipped slightly from 2.5% in August to 2.4% in September, but came in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/10/41270761/september-inflation-hotter-than-expected-jobless-claims-spike-the-most-in-over-a-">above economist forecasts of 2.3%</a>.
Despite this marking the sixth consecutive decline in annual inflation, core inflation — which excludes volatile food and energy — rose unexpectedly from 3.2% to 3.3%, marking its first increase since March 2023.
Monthly inflation readings also came in slightly above expectations for both headline and core metrics, though they showed no acceleration from August's growth pace.
With the Federal Reserve&#8217;s heightened focus on labor market dynamics, markets closely watched the latest jobless claims report, which revealed a surprising jump to 254,000, the highest since July 2023. 
Some experts, like Bill Adams, chief economist at Comerica Bank, attributed the spike to temporary disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene and said he anticipates similar effects from Hurricane Milton in the coming weeks.
Overall, the two key data releases pushed the S&amp;P 500 down from record highs reached the previous day while boosting expectations for a 25-basis-point rate cut in November. Notably, market-implied odds of a November rate cut inched up from 76% to 86% after the reports.

After starting the week with a negative session, U.S. markets rebounded on Tuesday, driven by falling oil prices, which helped alleviate concerns about a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/10/41234471/september-inflation-preview-traders-brace-for-market-jitters-as-crucial-report-loom">potential resurgence in inflation.</a>
Crude oil dropped as much as 5% on the day, weighed down by China&#8217;s lack of additional fiscal stimulus and a de-escalation in geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran.
At the same time, Treasury yields paused their recent climb, offering further relief to investors.

Wall Street started the week in the red, as traders weighed the economic and geopolitical fallout from escalating tensions in the Middle East. 
Monday marked the one-year anniversary of Hamas&#8217; October 7 attack, which triggered the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/specialty-etfs/24/10/41210761/oil-surges-on-1-year-hamas-attack-anniversary-as-israel-mulls-iran-retaliation">ongoing war in Gaza</a>. The situation is now threatening to spread across the region, as Israel considers retaliating for last week&#8217;s missile attacks from Iran.
By 1 p.m. ET, the major indices were modestly lower, with the S&amp;P 500 down 0.5% and the Dow Jones off by 0.7%. The Nasdaq 100 also slid 0.5%. The energy sector was the only bright spot, buoyed by surging oil prices.
West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude, as tracked by the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>), jumped over 3%, climbing to $77 per barrel. This rally marked its fifth consecutive session of gains, fueled by concerns that Israel may retaliate against Iran, a key oil producer, for its involvement in regional conflicts.
Last week&#8217;s blowout U.S. labor market data, coupled with rising oil prices and fresh stimulus measures out of China, pushed 10-year Treasury yields above 4%, setting the stage for the highest levels since late July. Investors appear increasingly wary of long-duration bonds, sending the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) down 0.6%, extending its losing streak to four sessions.
Market sentiment around the Federal Reserve&#8217;s upcoming policy decisions has also shifted. The probability of the Fed refraining from cutting interest rates next month has dropped to just 17%, according to CME FedWatch Tool, 
Rising yields weighed heavily on metals, with gold down 0.4% to $2,645 per ounce and silver dropping 1.3%. Meanwhile, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) gained 1.4%, trading at $63,682.

Israel mulling a counterattack against Iran caused oil prices and energy stocks to surge, driven by concerns over supply disruptions in a critical oil-producing region. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>), which tracks 31 major U.S. energy companies, including giants like Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) and Chevron Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>), recorded a remarkable 6.4% gain this week.
Investors poured nearly $300 million into the XLE ETF this week, the highest inflow since late July, according to Tradingview data.
Exxon Mobil, the largest U.S. oil company, reached a record high of $125 per share on Friday. The stock posted its sixth consecutive day of gains, ending the week up over 7%, marking its best performance since October 2022.
Oil prices continued their rally, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude recording its fourth straight day of gains, hitting levels last seen in late August. The geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran have sparked concerns over global oil supply disruptions.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Rising Middle East Tensions, Biden Calls For Measured Israeli Response</h3>
Israel promised a strong retaliation after Iran launched more than 180 ballistic missiles on Tuesday. While Israel&#8217;s air defense systems successfully intercepted most of the missiles, the attack further intensified the already heightened regional instability.
On Friday, President Joe Biden addressed the escalating crisis during a rare appearance at the White House daily press briefing. He mentioned Israel&#8217;s right to defend itself but said the country had not yet decided how it would respond to Iran&#8217;s ballistic missile strike.
Biden said he advised Israel against further escalating the conflict, suggesting that Israel might consider alternatives to targeting oil fields in its retaliation.
In his first public appearance since the attack, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei defended the strike as &#8220;legitimate punishment&#8221; for what he called Israeli crimes and urged greater resistance against Israel in the region, Reuters reported.
Iran's deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also issued a stark warning, stating that Iran could target Israeli oil refineries and gas fields if Israel chooses to strike Iranian territory.

US Energy Stocks Notch Biggest Weekly Gains In 2 Years, Exxon Hits Record Highs As Crude Surges To $75 On Israel-Iran Jitters

A stronger-than-expected September jobs report fueled gains on Wall Street, overshadowing investor concerns that had been driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/24/10/41126038/iran-attacks-israel-with-missiles-middle-east-tensions-escalates-s-p-500-stocks-bitcoin-fall-as-oil">East earlier this week. </a>
The U.S. economy added 254,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in September, a significant jump from August's 159,000 and well above forecasts of 140,000. This marked the most robust employment growth since March 2024.
In addition, the unemployment rate dropped more than anticipated to 4.1%, while average hourly earnings also surpassed expectations, signaling a red-hot labor market.
Small-cap stocks outpaced their large-cap peers as worries about an economic slowdown subsided further. Meanwhile, traders adjusted their outlook for the Federal Reserve's November meeting, reducing the probability of a 50-basis-point rate cut from 30% to just 10% as the stronger jobs data diminished the need for a more aggressive policy move.
U.S. Treasury yields rose sharply in response to the solid labor market data. The 2-year yield climbed by 20 basis points, while the 10-year yield increased by 12 basis points. 
Chinese equities continued their upward trajectory, driven by ongoing domestic stimulus measures. The iShares China Large-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXI#NYSE">FXI</a>) reached levels last seen in February 2022, just before Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Gold dipped 0.3% as the U.S. dollar strengthened and bond yields climbed. Oil prices extended their rally for the fourth consecutive session, with WTI crude hitting $75 per barrel during intraday trading.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) surged 2.2%, climbing to $62,000.

Oil is trading more than 5% higher Thursday on the heels of President Joe Biden&#8216;s statement that the U.S. spoke with Israel about a possible attack on Iran's oil facilities.
"We're in discussions about that,&#8221; Biden said during an interaction with reporters. 
Biden seemingly indicated he wasn&#8217;t partial to the idea of striking at Iran&#8217;s oil facilities, before cutting himself off: &#8220;I think that would be a little&#8230; anyway.&#8221; See video below.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Oil And The Israel-Iran Conflict</h3>
Iran is the seventh-largest oil producer in the world. The country, which backs the Hezbollah militant group, exports around half its production abroad. 
China, where <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/08/40596334/asia-markets-mixed-europe-gains-crude-oil-falls-on-chinese-demand-concerns-global-markets-today-whil">oil demand is weak</a>, is its main customer.
Since Iran's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/24/10/41126038/iran-attacks-israel-with-missiles-middle-east-tensions-escalates-s-p-500-stocks-bitcoin-fall-as-oil">missile attack on Israel</a> on Monday, the price of barrels has fluctuated. As of Oct. 3, the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil is $73.83 per barrel. This reflects a 5.32% increase from the previous day&#8217;s close of $70.10.
The price of Brent crude is approximately $77.76 per barrel. It has fluctuated within a range of $74.33 to $77.58 for the day.
The U.S., which is producing more oil under Biden than any other U.S. presidential administration, has been filling its reserves. The Biden administration acquired an additional <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/eurozone/24/10/41146905/geopolitical-risks-may-be-biggest-threat-to-markets-boe-says">6 million barrels of crude</a> just this week.
It&#8217;s worth noting that ongoing violence in the Middle East puts the Straits of Hormuz at risk. A third of tanker traffic and a fifth of LNG frozen gas is transported through that passageway. 
The U.S. and its allies are likely determined to keep the Strait open due to its strategic importance. Any attempt to block the Strait could provoke military intervention.
Iran controls much of the northern coastline of the Strait and has previously threatened to block the passage in response to sanctions or conflicts with Western countries. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reaction</h3>
So far, market reaction to the Middle East conflict is relatively mute compared to February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine.
At the time, the oil market reacted with significant volatility and disruption, leading to a sharp rise in global prices. 
Brent crude, the global benchmark, surged above $100 per barrel for the first time since 2014, and by March 2022, it had briefly spiked to $139 per barrel, near the all-time high.
Oil-related exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, were trending up at last check Thursday afternoon. Here&#8217;s where they stand:

Oil Prices Rally: Biden Confirms US 'Discussions' With Israel About Striking Iran Facilities

President Joe Biden and his administration purchased an additional <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/eurozone/24/10/41146905/geopolitical-risks-may-be-biggest-threat-to-markets-boe-says">6 million barrels of crude oil</a> earlier this week. 
The acquisition is meant to fill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The price tag came in at an average price of $68.56 per barrel, according to Patrick De Haan aka <a href="https://x.com/GasBuddyGuy/status/1840864888291242330">@GasBuddyGuy on X.</a> 
This is just the latest move in a series of oil trades executed by Biden's administration to stabilize the market.

The Context: In 2022, Biden ordered the release of more than 100 million barrels of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/02/36914512/biden-the-master-oil-trader-part-iii-president-refills-emergency-stash-as-crude-price-slides">oil from the SPR </a>after Russia invaded Ukraine. That created a supply shock in the oil markets. At the time, oil sold for more than $100 per barrel. But, through the release of oil from the SPR, Biden's administration managed to calm the markets, with oil returning to a more normal price of around $80 per barrel. While the administration still has not fully refilled the SPR to its pre-Russia invasion levels, the trades showcase how governments may intervene to help stabilize markets in times of uncertainty. When Biden originally released millions of barrels of oil from the SPR, gas prices were skyrocketing, putting pressure on American consumers. The release from the SPR led to a 40-cent-per-gallon decrease in gas prices, according to the Department of Energy. Now, as gas prices have returned to relatively normal levels, the administration's focus has shifted to refilling the SPR. On Wednesday, the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>), a fund that roughly tracks the price of oil, fell by more than 2% intraday amid ongoing unrest and uncertainty in the Middle East. Biden The Master Oil Trader Part IV? President Loads Up On Millions Of Barrels To Refill Emergency Stash In 'One Of The Best Oil Trades In History'

Oil prices continue to rise on Wednesday, adding to gains driven by potential supply disruptions in the Middle East and fresh warnings out of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/oil">known as OPEC+</a>.
What To Know: Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, the oil minister of Saudi Arabia, has warned that prices could fall to $50 per barrel if global oil producers don&#8217;t comply with production curbs, according to a <a href="https://www.wsj.com/business/energy-oil/saudi-minister-warns-of-50-oil-as-opec-members-flout-production-curbs-216dc070?mod=hp_lead_pos4">report</a> from the Wall Street Journal. 
The report indicates the Saudi oil minister&#8217;s comments are being viewed as a threat that Saudi Arabia is willing to start a pricing war to help maintain its market share.
Oil prices had been in decline before jumping this week amid <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/24/10/41126038/iran-attacks-israel-with-missiles-middle-east-tensions-escalates-s-p-500-stocks-bitcoin-fall-as-oil" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rising Middle East tensions</a>. Iran launched an attack on Israel Tuesday following the recent killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, reportedly firing between 100 and 200 missiles toward Israel.
Brent Crude futures, the international benchmark, climbed as much as 5% on Tuesday before pulling back and finishing the day up about 2.4%. Brent Crude futures were up 2.75%, trading around $75.50 at the time of writing Wednesday, while front-month&nbsp;WTI Crude futures were up 3.06%, hovering around $72. 
Saudi Arabia reportedly needs prices to be at least $85 per barrel in order to help fund its planned economic transformation. 
The rising tensions in the Middle East are also likely to push up prices of U.S. gasoline. According to an ABC News <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Business/rising-oil-prices-after-iran-strike-increase-us/story?id=114394795">report</a>, drivers could see prices at the pump rise between 10 cents and 15 cents per gallon.
The United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>) was up 2.7% at $74.06 and the IShares U.S. Oil &amp; Gas Exploration &amp; Production ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IEO#BATS">IEO</a>) was up 2.24% at $93.50 at last check. The SPDR Energy Select Sector Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) was up 1.25% at $90.93 at the time of writing.

Analysts React: OPEC is set to hold an online Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee meeting on Wednesday that the market will be watching closely, Roth MKM analysts said in a note. OPEC members are expected to discuss whether to ease production curbs in December.
The Roth MKM analysts also highlighted oil inventory data that is positive for oil prices and noted that oil is likely to continue trading higher on Wednesday. 
Analysts at Truist Securities and Jefferies highlighted other opportunities given the elevated global threat environment. Jefferies highlighted opportunity in the tanker market as the Middle East conflict raises risk premiums on the energy market, and Truist analysts said they expect the intensifying conflict to ultimately translate into bookings and backlog growth for the U.S. defense industry overall.

Wall Street is in full risk-on mode following the Federal Reserve&#8217;s landmark decision to slash interest rates by 50 basis points, signaling further cuts as inflation approaches <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/09/40938732/wall-street-ramps-up-interest-rate-cut-bets-after-fed-meeting-the-hard-landing-crow">the central bank&#8217;s target.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones both set fresh record highs during the morning session in New York, buoyed by strong performances from the Magnificent Seven tech giants.
By midday, these elite tech stocks added over $500 billion in market value, boosting their combined market capitalization to $15.9 trillion.
Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) led the rally, surging nearly 7% and hitting a two-month peak, while NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) climbed 5%, driving the semiconductor sector higher.
The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) jumped 4.6%, fully erasing its losses from September.
The Nasdaq 100 rose 2.9%, on pace for its strongest session in over a month and outperforming other major indices. Small caps joined the rally, with the Russell 2000 index surging 2%.
Commodities rallied across the board: Gold, silver, and copper increased by 1.2%, 3.8%, and 1.8%, respectively. Oil prices, tracked by the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>), spiked over 3%.
The bullish sentiment extended to cryptocurrencies, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rising over 2%, poised to close at its highest level since late August.
