<p>Risk appetite remained robust in the final trading session of the week, with all major U.S. indices poised to close the week in positive territory. Small-cap stocks outperformed their large-cap counterparts, continuing their <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/small-cap">recent streak of dominance</a>.</p>
<p>Fresh business surveys highlighted a notable health in the U.S. economy, with private sector activity recording its strongest expansion in over two and a half years. The services sector, in particular, showed remarkable growth, maintaining its rapid pace of expansion.</p>
<p>The Russell 2000, a benchmark for small-cap equities, surged 1.7% on Friday, building on a 1.5% gain from the previous session. The S&amp;P 500 edged higher, heading for a five-day winning streak, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed past the 44,000 mark, moving tantalizingly close to record highs. Technology stocks posted more modest gains.</p>
<p>The U.S. Dollar Index, tracked via the <strong>Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), extended its rally for an eighth consecutive week—the longest streak in 14 months—surpassing the 107 level to hit a two-year high. The dollar's strength was fueled by a mix of robust U.S. economic data <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/24/11/42138717/dollar-hits-2-year-highs-as-europes-recession-signals-spark-euro-pound-sell-offs">and economic malaise in Europe.</a></p>
<p>In commodities, gold climbed for a fifth straight session, advancing 5.6% for the week, its best weekly performance since March 2023.</p>
<p><strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) also maintained its bullish momentum, soaring past $99,000 and edging closer to the highly anticipated $100,000 milestone. </p>

<p>Wall Street witnessed a positive momentum on Thursday as investor risk appetite remained resilient despite escalating geopolitical tensions in Europe. The market brushed off concerns following a Russian missile strike on a Ukrainian military facility overnight, which came in response to Ukrainian missile <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42113449/natural-gas-prices-spike-to-over-1-year-highs-oil-surges-to-70-as-russia-fires-intercontinental-ballistic-missile-to-ukraine">attacks earlier this week. </a></p>
<p>Russian President <strong>Vladimir Putin</strong>, in a televised address on Thursday, stated that after the use of long-range missiles from Ukraine, &#8220;the regional conflict gained elements of global one.&#8221;</p>
<p>Major U.S. indices traded higher by midday trading in New York, with standout performances among blue-chip stocks and small-cap equities. </p>
<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 500 points, reaching 43,965, marking a 1.3% gain and its strongest session in over two weeks.</p>
<p>The Russell 2000 outperformed with a 1.7% jump, setting up its best day since the post-election rally. </p>
<p>In contrast, the Nasdaq 100 lagged slightly, rising 0.5%. <strong>Nvidia Corp. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>), despite higher-than-expected earnings, failed to spark broader optimism in the tech sector. Meanwhile, shares of <strong>Alphabet Inc</strong>. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>)(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) tumbled nearly 6% after the Department of Justice (DOJ) mandated the sale of Google Chrome aimed at curbing Google&#8217;s dominant position in search and digital advertising.</p>
<p>Geopolitical uncertainties drove strong gains in the commodities market. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/24/11/42118286/7-us-natural-gas-stocks-to-watch-as-henry-hub-prices-surge-50-in-november">Natural gas Henry Hub prices </a>soared 5%, bringing year-to-date gains to over 50% and marking the best monthly performance since July 2022. Crude oil prices also climbed 0.9%, supported by supply concerns.</p>
<p>Gold extended its winning streak, rising 0.7% for its fourth consecutive session of gains as investors sought safe-haven assets.</p>
<p><strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) continued its rally, rising over 3% and hitting an intraday high of $98,367. The largest cryptocurrency now hovers tantalizingly close to the $100,000 milestone. </p>

<p>Wall Street saw the first surge in risk aversion after <strong>Donald Trump</strong>'s election victory last week, as concerns grew over potential tariffs and trade policy shifts spurred by the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/24/11/41902202/trumps-china-hawks-rumored-for-top-roles-yuan-hits-3-month-low"> incoming administration's key appointments.</a></p>
<p>Trump is reportedly considering Sen. <strong>Marco Rubio</strong> (R-Fla.) for secretary of state and Rep. <strong>Mike Waltz </strong>(R-Fla.) for national security advisor. Both are vocal hawks on China and NATO, raising concerns of a tougher U.S. stance that could strain key geopolitical and trade relationships.</p>
<p>Adding to the cautious sentiment, investors are bracing for Wednesday's key inflation data release, with economists forecasting the annual rate to hit 2.6% in October.</p>
<p>As of midday trading in New York, none of the major U.S. equity indices posted gains, while small caps underperformed, with the Russell 2000 down 1.5%. Ten out of 11 S&amp;P 500 sectors traded in the red, with consumer staples the only marking tiny gains.</p>
<p>Chinese stocks suffered steep declines, with major U.S.-listed companies falling between 5% and 9% as worries over potential tariffs spooked investors.</p>
<p>The dollar, viewed as a hedge against tariff risk, strengthened, with a currency-weighted index reaching its highest level since May 2024. </p>
<p>The Japanese yen slipped past 154.7 per dollar, fully erasing gains from the Bank of Japan's August intervention, while the Chinese yuan and the euro also weakened, with the euro falling below $1.06.</p>
<p>Treasury yields climbed, with the 10-year Treasury yield up eight basis points to 4.42%, pushing the popular <strong>iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) down 1.2%.</p>
<p>The cryptocurrency market also faced pressure, with <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) down 1.6%. <p>Famed market analyst Tom Lee, managing partner of Fundstrat, summarized trade ideas on Monday following President-Elect <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/11/41768178/donald-trump-defeats-kamala-harris-to-win-2024-election"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><strong>Donald Trump&#8217;s </strong></span>victory</a>. Fellow analyst Ryan Detrick concurred with two of Lee&#8217;s ideas.</p>
<p><strong>Tom Lee&#8217;s Picks:</strong> Lee <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIIzr4_3MvU&amp;ab_channel=CNBCTelevision">appeared</a> on CNBC Monday morning, touting cyclical and small-cap stocks.</p>
<p>Lee asserted that energy stocks may not do as well as expected under a second Trump term, but cyclical industrial and financial stocks may perform well.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is for [industrials and financials]&#8230; a great environment, including M&amp;A, cost of money falling and deregulation,&#8221; Lee said.</p>
<p>The analyst noted that markets have begun pricing in future inflation, perhaps due to Trump&#8217;s plan to deport undocumented immigrants or run up fiscal spending. Lee says markets are unsure of Trump&#8217;s plans on trade, but noted that markets may shape policy to be pro-business. </p>
<p>Lee subsequently touted small-cap companies due to <span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">their historical underperformance and cheap valuations compared to the S&amp;P 500, tracked by the <strong>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>). He also noted that small-cap earnings</span> are faster than those of their larger counterparts. Additionally, roughly 44% of small-caps are cyclical (regional banks and industrial stocks).</p>
<p><strong>Detrick Agrees:</strong> Detrick agreed with Lee&#8217;s ideas following his appearance on CNBC.</p>

<p><strong>Recent Price Action:</strong> The financial-focused <strong>Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) has performed well in the green since Trump&#8217;s win, up nearly 7%. Regional banks have performed even better—the <strong>iShares US Regional Banks ETF </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IAT#NYSE">IAT</a>) is up over 11% in that timeframe.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, industrials have also performed well; the <strong>Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLI#NYSE">XLI</a>) is up over 5%.</p>

<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) also dominated headlines, surpassing</span> the $85,000 milestone and fueling widespread gains across other crypto assets.</p>
<p>Major crypto-related stocks, including <strong>Coinbase Global Inc</strong>. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COIN#NASDAQ">COIN</a>), rallied nearly 22%, hitting highs last seen in late November 2021. <strong>MARA Holdings</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MARA#NASDAQ">MARA</a>) soared 25%, with <strong>Riot Platforms Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIOT#NASDAQ">RIOT</a>) and <strong>CleanSpark Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CSLK#NASDAQ">CSLK</a>) both up by 21%.</p>
<p>Within tech, Tesla continued its rally, while the rest of the sector lagged, weighed down by sharp declines in semiconductors following new AI-related export restrictions to China, impacting <strong>Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>).</p>
<p>Elsewhere, the U.S. dollar extended its gains, while Treasury yields held steady, with the 10-year yield hovering around 4.3%.</p>
<p>Prices tumbled in commodities, with the exception of natural gas, which rose roughly 10%. Gold dropped over 2%, and oil fell by 3%.</p>

<p>Financial stocks have surged ahead of tech in year-to-date performance, fueled by a Trump-led rally on Wednesday that lifted banks and brokers amid investor expectations of a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">deregulation-friendly political landscape ahead.</a></p>
<p>The <strong>Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) has risen by 30% in 2024, outpacing the <strong>Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>), which is up 26% this year. </p>
<p>Small and mid-sized banks, tracked by the <strong>SPDR S&amp;P Regional Banking ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>), have also seen strong performance, with a 13% jump following election results, bringing them in line with tech sector gains. </p>
<p>Financial stocks, which have lagged behind technology for six of the past seven years, are now catching up, propelled by renewed optimism for deregulation and M&amp;A activities.</p>
<h1 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Analysts Expect M&amp;A Activity to Heat Up</strong></h1>
<p>With the Trump administration&#8217;s return to the White House, analysts are projecting a significant uptick in mergers and acquisitions (M&amp;A) in the financial sector.</p>
<p>&#8220;Under the upcoming Trump II administration, we expect a more favorable backdrop for M&amp;A which could lead to additional activity in the space after having been quiet for the past few years,&#8221; said <strong>Anthony Elian</strong>, CFA, analyst at JPMorgan.</p>
<p>Lower regulatory barriers could pave the way for consolidation among smaller banks, while larger financial institutions are expected to benefit from a more active capital markets environment. </p>

<p><strong>Devin Ryan</strong>, analyst at Citizens JMP Securities, highlighted that a Trump-led "sweep of Congress" could significantly ease regulatory pressures for the broader financial and fintech sectors.</p>
<p>&#8220;The &#8216;Trump Trade&#8217; had already been underway in the market in recent weeks, but the resounding presidential win, and perhaps more importantly, likely sweep of Congress, is adding fuel to the fire in stock moves,&#8221; Ryan explained.</p>
<p>For fintech firms, this shift could relieve recent regulatory scrutiny, particularly in areas such as connectivity with traditional banks and practices overseen by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Companies involved in digital assets stand to benefit even more, as regulatory clarity would open the door for new market entrants and increase industry participation.</p>
<p>"Digital assets could arguably be the biggest winner of them all," said Ryan, who sees sentiment in the space "improving materially from here." </p>
<p>Ryan indicates the political climate has shifted to one more favorable for cryptocurrencies, as policymakers begin to recognize the economic and electoral weight of pro-crypto sentiment.</p>
<p>The expert is particularly bullish on several key players in the financial sector. </p>
