Leading And Lagging Sectors For April 3, 2025

A sweeping new wave of tariffs unveiled by President Donald Trump on Wednesday triggered a sharp selloff during the after hours of trading as the scope and scale of the trade duties exceeded <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44616760/donald-trump-sets-reciprocal-tariffs-on-key-trade-partners-in-historic-policy-shock">Wall Street's worst-case expectations.</a>
The president framed the move as a long-overdue correction to decades of trade imbalance, instituting what he called a "reciprocal tariff rate," set at 50% of what trading partners charge the United States, but also factoring in non-tariff barriers like currency manipulation, value-added taxes and outright import bans.
While Trump had telegraphed his intention to "rebalance" U.S. trade policy, the specific duty levels, some of which reached into the mid-30% range with key trading partners, jolted investors.
Under the new framework, China, which Trump said imposes tariffs as high as 67% on American goods, will now face reciprocal U.S. duties of approximately 37%. The European Union, which applies a 39% combined rate including VATs, will be subject to a 20% U.S. tariff. Japan, with an estimated 46% trade barrier, now faces a 24% duty on exports to the U.S.
Canada and Mexico, two major trading partners, were notably excluded from the tariff program — a move that suggests Trump may be preserving the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, at least for now.
The White House confirmed that new trade tariffs will take effect on April 9. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariffs Spark After-Hours Chaos: Index Futures Dive</h3>
The market&#8217;s reaction was swift and brutal. By 5:10 p.m. ET, futures on the S&amp;P 500 dropped 2.5%, while Nasdaq 100 futures fell 3.3%. Dow Jones Industrial Average contracts lost 1.4% and the Russell 2000 futures collapsed by 4.7%. 
Losses were broad-based. Every major sector of the S&amp;P 500 was in the red, with Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLY#NYSE">XLY</a>) and Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) down about 3%.
As risk appetite evaporated, gold prices climbed. Futures on the yellow metal gained 1.1%, extending their year-to-date advance as investors sought shelter from escalating geopolitical and trade tensions.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tech Megacaps Bear the Brunt</h3>
The Magnificent Seven stocks, the market's dominant tech names, are on track to lose a combined $685 billion.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) was the biggest laggard, down 6.6% and projected to erase $221.7 billion in market value.
 Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) lost 4.7%, a drop equivalent to $127.2 billion. Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) fell 5.1%, and Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) slid nearly 6%, as traders repositioned for a potentially more inflationary and protectionist economic environment.

Following the worst quarterly performance for U.S. stocks in over two years, caution dominated Wall Street as investors awaited details on the tariff plans expected from the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">Trump administration on Wednesday.</a>
On Tuesday, a Washington Post report suggested the administration is considering a sweeping 20% tariff on most of the $3 trillion in annual imports.
Survey data showed that goods-producing businesses had been front-loading purchases ahead of the expected tariffs by the end of first quarter, with inventory levels rising and input cost pressures<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/44588076/us-manufacturing-slips-into-contraction-as-tariff-driven-costs-hit-near-3-year-high"> hitting a three-year high.</a>
Major indexes showed little movement by midday in New York, with the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posting modest gains.
Notably, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>), and Lucid Group Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LCID#NASDAQ">LCID</a>) each jumped around 6% as investors viewed them as potential winners from auto-related tariffs. 
Reports last week highlighted that all three manufacture vehicles entirely in the U.S., giving them a competitive edge over peers like Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) and General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>).
Treasuries climbed as yields fell, and gold took a breather after hitting a record $3,122 per ounce. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rose more than 3% to over $85,000, marking its strongest session in three weeks.

<li>American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAL#NASDAQ">AAL</a>) fell to the lowest level since late August, after Jefferies downgraded the stock from &#8216;Buy&#8217; to &#8216;Hold&#8217; and reduced its price target from $20.00 to $12.00.</li>
<li>IAC Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IAC#NASDAQ">IAC</a>) rallied 26.5% after completing the spin-off of Angi Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ANGI#NASDAQ">ANGI</a>). </li>

Stock and ETF investors, take note. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/peter-schiff">Peter Schiff </a>sees trouble ahead and he's not mincing words. The renowned investor warns that the government and financial media are &#8220;making the same mistake again&#8221; as they did before the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, Schiff wrote <a href="https://x.com/PeterSchiff/status/1906690596640600283">on</a> X.
The culprit this time? A toxic mix of tariffs, rising interest rates and misguided Federal Reserve policies that could unleash an economic firestorm.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tariffs: A Recipe For Inflation, Rate Hikes</h2>
Schiff argues that tariffs won't just impact trade &#8211; they'll send shockwaves through the economy. &#8220;Tariffs mean fewer goods will come into the country, and fewer dollars will go out. More money chasing fewer goods means higher domestic prices. This is an economic certainty,&#8221; he said.
For investors, that translates to higher inflation, a weaker consumer and pressure on corporate margins.
But it doesn't stop there. &#8220;Lower trade deficits will result in fewer dollars being recycled into U.S. bonds, sending long-term interest rates higher.&#8221; With higher rates, borrowing costs rise for businesses and consumers alike, slowing growth and putting pressure on stocks—especially high-flying tech names.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Fed To The Rescue? Not So Fast</h2>
Schiff sees the Federal Reserve making the wrong move when the economy starts showing signs of strain. &#8220;The Fed will respond to this &#8216;unexpected&#8217; economic weakness with rate cuts, ignoring the surge in consumer prices as a transitory effect of tariffs.&#8221; 
Translation? Inflation won't just persist &#8211; it could spiral. And if the Fed resorts to quantitative easing (QE) again, Schiff warns, &#8220;throwing gasoline on an already burning inflation fire&#8221; could create a crisis far worse than 1970s-style stagflation.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What It Means For Investors</h2>
If Schiff's prediction plays out, stock investors should brace for turbulence. High-growth and rate-sensitive sectors like technology, as tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) and the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>), could face pressure. On the other hand, inflation-resistant assets &#8211; such as:
Commodities, as tracked by the Invesco DB Commodity Index Tracking Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DBC#NYSE">DBC</a>); Gold, as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), and select energy stocks &#8211; may become safe havens.
Bond investors and those invested in popular Treasury tracking ETFs such as iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>), the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BND#NASDAQ">BND</a>) and the iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AGG#NYSE">AGG</a>) beware: rising long-term rates could send Treasury prices tumbling.
Meanwhile, a &#8220;weaker dollar and larger budget deficits&#8221; could mean international ETFs and hard assets outperform U.S. equities.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Is This The Next 2008?</h2>
Schiff isn't predicting a simple market correction &#8211; he's warning of something much worse. &#8220;This will not be 1970s-style stagflation. It will be something much worse.&#8221;

Peter Schiff Sounds The Alarm: 'Same Mistake Again' Could Trigger Economic Firestorm

Risk sentiment remains under pressure at the start of the week on Wall Street, with tech-heavy indexes sliding while commodities advance, as traders fear a new wave of price pressures following <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">the upcoming tariffs announcement.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 experienced a turbulent morning session, first hitting its lowest level in over six months before clawing back some ground and trimming losses. Nevertheless, the benchmark equity index is on track for its worst month since September 2022, having fallen 7% in March.
Tech stocks remained the weakest link, with the Nasdaq 100 down 1.1% as semiconductor names weighed on the broader sector. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) dropped 1.9% and is down 11.9% month-to-date — also marking its worst month since September 2022.
President Donald Trump's threats toward Iran over the weekend pushed crude oil prices up by 3.5% for the session, marking the biggest single-day gain since October.
Energy-related stocks outperformed and are on pace to log their fourth consecutive positive month, now up 8.5% year-to-date.
Meanwhile, gold prices continued to smash record highs, with bullion surging over 1% to $3,115 per ounce. Quarterly gains have reached 18% — the strongest three-month rally since 2009.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) inched up 1.2% to $83,400, fighting to avoid a second consecutive monthly decline.

Stocks Fall, S&P 500 Eyes Worst Month In Almost Two Years, Oil Rallies: What's Driving Markets Monday?

U.S. technology-linked ETFs endured a wave of selling pressure in March 2025 as investor enthusiasm for the artificial intelligence boom cooled and macroeconomic uncertainties—from tariff risks to geopolitical tensions—dampened appetite <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/technology-stocks">for high-growth names.</a>
The Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which tracks the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index, plunged 9.1% in March, its worst monthly performance since December 2022. 
Unlike previous corrections, where dip-buying quickly followed. This time, investors pulled back. QQQ posted $1.4 billion in outflows, snapping a four-month streak of inflows and signaling rising caution.
The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) slumped 10%, marking its steepest one-month drop since September 2022. The ETF also bled $770 million in March, bringing combined outflows over the past two months to more than $1.1 billion.
Semiconductor-related ETFs—previously the poster children of the AI revolution—were particularly hard hit.
The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) suffered $200 million in outflows, marking the fourth straight month of capital leakage. 
The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMH#NASDAQ">SMH</a>) and SPDR S&amp;P Semiconductor ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XSD#NYSE">XSD</a>) recorded outflows of $210 million and $40 million, respectively. 
These ETFs have entered a bear market after falling more than 20% from their late 2024 peak.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Valuation Reset: The AI Trade Comes Back to Earth</h3>
According to Ed Yardeni, president at Yardeni Research, the semiconductor sector has now "mostly erased its valuation premium" over the broader market—an edge it had built up since the debut of ChatGPT in late 2022.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve opined that DeepSeek would be a net positive for AI demand, as cheaper training and model proliferation helps non-tech companies adopt AI and boost productivity. Perhaps there was a mini-bubble built up on AI euphoria,&#8221; Yardeni said in a recent note. 
Yet, he also expressed room for optimism.
&#8220;Since the Magnficent-7 stocks&#8217; long-term earnings expectations and valuation multiples already have realigned closer to historical averages without a bear market or recession, we think further downside for the AI trade is limited,&#8221; Yardeni added.

Leading And Lagging Sectors For March 28, 2025

Wall Street dipped slightly on Thursday, with all major indexes edging into the red as investors digested President Donald Trump&#8216;s latest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44517885/trump-slaps-25-tariffs-on-autos-what-it-means-for-your-next-car-purchase">move on auto tariffs.</a>
Late Wednesday, Trump announced a 25% tariff on all auto imports starting next week, with duties on auto parts set to follow in May.
European automakers took a hit, with Mercedes-Benz Group AG (OTCPK: MBGAF) and Porsche Automobile Holding SE (OTCPK: POAHF) sliding 2.5% and 5%, respectively. 
Michigan-based carmakers didn't fare much better. Shares of Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) fell 2.5%, while General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) plunged 6.5%, with the latter marking the worst performance on the S&amp;P 500.
In contrast, U.S. electric vehicle makers rallied. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) rose 2.6%, and Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>) jumped 5%. U.S. stocks declined on Wednesday, with all major indices in the red by midday in New York, as renewed concerns <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">over tariffs rattled investors.</a>
President Donald Trump signaled that new trade duties on automobiles could be announced as early as today, while market participants are also bracing for April 2, which marks the start of reciprocal tariffs.
Technology shares, particularly semiconductor stocks, led the selloff, dragging the Nasdaq 100 sharply lower and trimming much of its weekly gains. Shares of Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) tumbled 5.9%, on track for the worst daily loss since early March, as investors fear further restrictions on chip exports to China. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NYSE">SOXX</a>) fell 3.4%. 
Meanwhile, blue-chip stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average were more resilient, supported by strength in the energy and consumer staples sectors. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), Wall Street's so-called "fear gauge," jumped 8% to 18.9.
The dollar and Treasury yields remained flat, reflecting a wait-and-see stance in the bond market amid uncertainty over the broader economic impact of potential tariffs.
In commodities, crude oil rose 1.4%, extending weekly gains to 2.5%—on track for its best week since early January—after a surprise drop in commercial inventories. Metals held steady, with copper holding record highs.
Bitcoin slipped 1% to $86,500 following a flat close the previous day.

Stocks Slip As Tariff Fears Resurface: What's Driving Markets Wednesday?

April tends to be a favorable month for U.S. equities, and history makes a compelling case for this. Over the past 95 years, the S&amp;P 500 has gained an average of 1.1% in April, finishing <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">higher 61% of the time.</a>
In April, the index notched some of its most powerful monthly rallies in history, surging 43.6% in April 1933 and 17.9% in April 2020. Yet, it&#8217;s not always been a smooth ride — the worst April returns were a 20% crash in 1932 and a 9.5% drop in 1970.
Zooming in on the past three decades, April's track record becomes even more convincing. 
The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), the benchmark ETF tracking the S&amp;P 500, delivered an average gain of 1.9% over the last 30 Aprils, making it the second-best month of the year after November. SPY ended April in the green 77% of the time.
That said, 2025 has started on a cautious note. Through March 26, the S&amp;P 500 is down about 3% year-to-date. 
Yet history suggests a seasonal tailwind could soon be at play — especially in four specific sectors that have consistently outperformed the broader market in April.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Financials (XLF): Banks Lead The Earnings Charge</h3>
The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) has historically been April&#8217;s top-performing sector. 
Since its inception in 1999, XLF has risen an average of 2.7% during the month, with gains coming in 65% of the time. The seasonal strength is largely tied to the first-quarter earnings season, which kicks off in April and is typically led by major banks. Optimism surrounding annual earnings outlooks often provides a boost.
XLF has already outperformed the broader market in 2025, gaining 4.5% year-to-date. Within the sector, JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>) stands out: Over the past 45 years, JPM shares have climbed an average of 2.6% in April, delivering positive returns 68% of the time.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Consumer Discretionary (XLY): Big Tech Retailers Deliver Spring Strength</h3>
The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLY#NYSE">XLY</a>) also posted a strong seasonal performance, rising 2.4% on average in April over the last 26 years. It has a 65% winning rate during the month.
April is historically the best month for Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), with an average gain of 7.6% and a 70% success rate. 
Likewise, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) tends to accelerate this time of year, with April returns averaging 5.9%, making it the second-strongest month for the electric vehicle maker, behind only November's 11.9% surge.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Materials (XLB): A Solid Spring For Commodities And Chemicals</h3>
The Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLB#NYSE">XLB</a>) also delivered strong April sector performers. XLB has risen an average of 3.1% in April over the past 26 years, with a 65% win rate. The ETF is up about 3% year-to-date, suggesting some early momentum heading into April.
One heavyweight in the materials space, Linde plc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LIN#NYSE">LIN</a>) — which represents roughly 20% of XLB's holdings — has consistently delivered in April. With 32 years of historical data, Linde has averaged a 3.5% gain in the month and ended April in positive territory 69% of the time.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Energy (XLE): The Strongest April Performer</h3>
Energy stocks have historically delivered the most robust gains in April, with the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) averaging a 4.1% return and closing the month higher 62% of the time. 
Yet, it&#8217;s worth noting that this impressive figure is skewed by an extraordinary rebound in April 2020, when XLE surged nearly 30% following a historic 35% plunge in March 2020 — a period marked by collapsing oil prices and pandemic-driven market chaos. 
Looking at long-term leaders within the sector, Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) shares have gained an average of 2.7% in April over the past 40 years, while Chevron Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) performed slightly better, rising 3.1% on average over the same period.
