Leading And Lagging Sectors For April 9, 2025

<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/recession">Most sectors are stumbling</a>, but the more defensive corners of the S&amp;P 500 are quietly setting up for a comeback.
That&#8217;s according to JPMorgan's Jason Hunter, who breaks the market into three camps: 
<ul>
<li>Former leaders (Tech, Consumer Discretionary, Financials)</li>
<li>Cyclical sectors (Industrials, Materials, Energy), and </li>
<li>Defensives (Healthcare, Staples, Utilities). </li>
</ul>
The first two groups have cracked below key levels. Hunter predicts that even after recent bounces, they're likely to fade again before any real recovery takes hold.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Reflex Bounces Or Just False Hope?</h2>
Tech and Discretionary stocks saw sharp rebounds. But don't get too excited. In his latest technical chartbook, Hunter expects resistance near prior breakdown levels to stop these rallies in their tracks.
Tech, as tracked by the S&amp;P 500 Information Technology Sector Index (S5INFT Index), shows a ceiling between 3905 and 4240.
Discretionary? The S&amp;P 500 Consumer Discretionary Sector Index (S5COND Index) will likely fizzle between 1525 and 1660 before heading back toward support.
Financials aren't faring any better. The S&amp;P 500 Financials Sector Index (S5FINL Index) broke down from a classic top formation, and although it bounced, Hunter sees resistance near 767-791 acting as a lid before another leg down.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cyclicals Look Exhausted</h2>
Industrials, Materials, and Energy all saw sharp pullbacks, many of which hit key support zones. Industrials, as tracked by the S&amp;P 500 Industrial Sector Index (S5INDU Index), are bouncing from the 960-990 zone but face resistance just above 1050. 
Materials may be priced in a global manufacturing slump, with further downsides possibly occurring if economic data worsens. And Energy remains stuck between breakdown levels and deeper long-term support near 500-533 for the S&amp;P 500 Energy Sector Index (S5ENRS Index).
The takeaway? These economically sensitive sectors look bruised, and any bounce could be short-lived.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Defensives: The Quiet Comeback Kids</h2>
Where's the relative strength? It's in the so-called boring stuff.
Defensive sectors don't show the same distribution—or investor exit—patterns that plague other groups, says Hunter. That gives them a cleaner technical setup.
Healthcare is bouncing after narrowly missing its key support zone and may climb back into the upper end of its recent range. 
Consumer Staples, as tracked by the S&amp;P 500 Consumer Staples Sector Index (S5CONS Index), are holding their trading band, and if they can clear resistance around 870, it could mark a shift in trend. 
Utilities, meanwhile, as represented by the S&amp;P 500 Utilities Sector Index (S5UTIL Index), are attempting to bounce from the 360-370 zone. A push past 391 could open the door to more upside.
For investors looking to lean into the defensive rebound, sector ETFs offer a straightforward way to gain exposure. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLV#NYSE">XLV</a>) tracks major healthcare names and shows signs of stabilization. The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLP#NYSE">XLP</a>) captures companies with steady demand, from food producers to household goods giants, and could benefit from renewed risk-off sentiment.
Meanwhile, the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLU#NYSE">XLU</a>) offers exposure to power and water utilities that typically hold up well during economic slowdowns. These ETFs trading near key support zones may offer a lower-risk entry point as markets search for firmer footing.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">S&amp;P 500 Still Has Work To Do</h2>
The overall market, as represented by the S&amp;P 500 Index, is bouncing from its 4500-4800 long-term support zone, but Hunter warns that the rally could stall near 5396 or 5450. From there, another retest of support looks likely before a more durable bottom can take shape.
The market remains in a recession-driven bear, with more downside risk across most sectors. But while the high-flyers and cyclical names may struggle, the defensives are quietly preparing to step into the spotlight. Sometimes, playing it safe is the boldest move of all.

Dividend-oriented ETFs are also attracting attention. The iShares Core High Dividend ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HDV#NYSE">HDV</a>), which owns a portfolio of financially healthy U.S. firms that pay high dividend yields, protects against declining stock prices with consistent income.
Value investing is also gaining traction. The move into defensive positioning occurs as investors process the latest ratcheting up of U.S.-China trade tensions. According to the White House, the U.S. tariff rate on Chinese imports will spike to 104% at 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday unless China removes retaliatory tariffs against the U.S.
The risk of blanket tariffs — a 10% base tariff on all imports to the U.S. and higher rates on major trading partners such as the EU, India, Taiwan, and Vietnam — has unsettled markets. Uncertainty about a supposedly planned 90-day tariff break, which the White House <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/04/44671308/stock-market-surge-evaporates-as-headline-roulette-plagues-traders-fake-news-white-house-says-in-response-to">called &#8220;fake news</a>,&#8221; contributed to the fluctuations.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trump Sparks Optimism With Trade Talk Blitz</h3>
The catalyst behind the rally was a lengthy post on Truth Social by Trump, in which he described a "great call" with South Korea's acting president. 
The president said South Korea is sending a "top team" to the U.S. for negotiations, calling the process &#8220;one-stop shopping&#8221; for trade and military agreements.
In a <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2025/04/08/asia/south-korea-acting-president-han-interview-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN</a> interview, South Korea&#8217;s acting president confirmed the country would not align with China and Japan to counter U.S. tariffs. 
Seoul faces 25% tariffs under Trump's global tariff rollout. Instead, it aims to strike a bilateral agreement with the U.S. to avoid a blow to its export-driven economy.
Trump also hinted at more openness in trade negotiations with China after threatening Monday to impose a 50% tariff on top of the 54% already levied.
&#8220;China also wants to make a deal, badly, but they don&#8217;t know how to get it started,&#8221; Trump wrote.
&#8220;We are waiting for their [China's] call. It will happen!&#8221; he added, suggesting renewed momentum on U.S.-China trade talks.
Senior White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett echoed the optimism, telling Fox News that the Trump administration is focusing on countries with "large trade deficits" with the U.S. He emphasized that "fair and reciprocal trade" remains the administration&#8217;s goal.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Mega-cap stocks (S&amp;P 100): Top 7 performers</h3>
Among S&amp;P 100 companies, CVS Health Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVS#NYSE">CVS</a>) led gains with a 9.26% surge, followed by Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>) and UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNH#NYSE">UNH</a>).

Leading And Lagging Sectors For April 7, 2025

Dip-buying remained absent in early Friday trading in New York, with Wall Street deep in the red as global trade war fears continued to escalate, despite the March jobs report showed continued signs of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/44645518/strong-jobs-report-offers-hope-but-will-it-be-enough-to-counter-tariff-turmoil">U.S. labor market resilience. </a>
The U.S. economy added 228,000 jobs in March—the strongest gain since December 2024—sharply beating expectations of 135,000, according to figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Still, the report did little to calm nerves. Investors fear it may be the last strong print for a while, with the economic impact of rising tariffs expected to seep into the data in the coming months.
The unemployment rate ticked up just 0.1 percentage points to 4.2%, remaining low by historical standards, while wage growth broadly aligned with forecasts. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% month-over-month and 3.8% year-over-year.
Wall Street remained deep in the red after China announced a retaliatory 34% tariff on U.S. goods—matching the rate imposed by President Donald Trump on Wednesday—intensifying fears of a full-blown trade war.
Trump took to Truth Social on Friday. "Great job numbers, far better than expected. It's already working. Hang tough, we can't lose!"
He added. "China played it wrong, they panicked," and reassured investors: "This is a great time to get rich—richer than ever before!"
Investors are now on edge, awaiting remarks from Fed Chair Jerome Powell at 11:25 a.m. ET on Friday, hoping for any hint of a dovish shift in policy tone.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wall Street In Bloodbath: Could Powell Halt The Bleeding? </h3>
Here's how the key benchmarks moved at the open:

<li>S&amp;P 500, tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), was down 2.9% by 9:55 a.m. in New York.</li>
<li>Dow Jones Industrial Average, tracked by the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), fell 2.6%, officially entering correction territory after falling more than 10% from its late-2024 peak.</li>
<li>Nasdaq-100, tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), fell 2.9%, hitting a 20% decline from all-time highs, entering a bear market. </li>
<li>Russell 2000, represented by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), fell 4.1%. </li>

Every sector traded in the red, with heaviest losses concentrated in Energy&nbsp;Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>), down 5%, and Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>), down 4%. 
While stocks continued to slump, bonds attracted haven flows. Yields on 10-year Treasury notes fell by 10 basis points to 3.94%. The popular iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rose 1.5%. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Top Performers Among Mega-Caps</h3>
<ul>
<li>American Tower Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMT#NYSE">AMT</a>) rose 1.80% to $232.30.</li>
<li>Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DUK#NYSE">DUK</a>) gained 1.25%, trading at $125.59.</li>
<li>Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMGN#NASDAQ">AMGN</a>) advanced 1.18% to $313.50.</li>

Wall Street just got a wake-up call. According to JPMorgan analyst Maia G. Crook, the probability of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/recession">a U.S. recession</a> has surged to 60%, up from 40% last month, thanks to the latest round of tariff hikes.
The "largest U.S. tax hike in nearly 60 years" is expected to hit household and business spending, drag down sentiment and disrupt global supply chains.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tariffs &amp; Tumbling Sentiment</h2>
The tariff war escalated with a fresh 22% hike, pushing fears of retaliation and economic slowdowns to new highs. Crook warns of ripple effects, noting that the uncertainty around trade policies could further dampen business confidence. 
While there's still a 40% chance of avoiding a recession, she cautions that it hinges on "negotiations&#8221; that &#8220;will bring these announced rates down in the coming weeks."

President Donald Trump's sweeping new trade tariffs sent shockwaves through global markets on Thursday, triggering a massive sell-off that echoed the COVID-19 pandemic-era routs, as investor risk <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">appetite vanished in a flash.</a>
Wall Street saw a staggering $2 trillion in market cap erased, with the U.S.&#8217;s biggest 10 companies shedding $1 trillion alone.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) plunged 8.7%, staring down its worst day since March 2020 and wiping out nearly $300 billion in value. NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) tumbled 6.4%, losing $171.9 billion, while Amazon.com Inc. The S&amp;P 500 fell nearly 4%, poised for its worst session since September 2022, and sank to a seven-month low. Small caps took the brunt of the sell-off, with the Russell 2000 plunging over 5% and officially entering a bear market, now down more than 20% from its 2024 peak.
Fears of retaliatory action from key U.S. trading partners dragged every major sector into the red, except for defensive plays like consumer staples and utilities.
Consumer discretionary stocks were slammed. Apparel names posted double-digit losses: Ralph Lauren Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RL#NYSE">RL</a>), Nike Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NKE#NYSE">NKE</a>), Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LULU#NASDAQ">LULU</a>) and Garmin Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GRMN#NYSE">GRMN</a>) each dropped between 10% and 16%.
Cruise lines were also hit hard: Norwegian Cruise Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NCLH#NYSE">NCLH</a>) sank 13%, Carnival Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CCL#NYSE">CCL</a>) fell 10%, and Royal Caribbean Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RCL#NYSE">RCL</a>) slid 9%.
Bond markets saw a mild flight to safety. Treasury yields edged lower, yet the U.S. dollar weakened 1.6%, with the DXY index heading for its worst day since November 2022.
Commodities weren't spared. Oil prices nosedived on fears of a global slowdown, worsened by OPEC+'s surprise move to raise output. West Texas Intermediate crude plunged 7.5%, slipping below $70 per barrel.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) showed relative resilience in the carnage, dipping just 1% and holding above $81,600.

Leading And Lagging Sectors For April 3, 2025

Wall Street extends gains on Wednesday, as investors remain resilient in their risk appetite despite the looming announcement of sweeping trade tariffs <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">by President Donald Trump.</a>
The president is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/wgmKYg-zK9o">scheduled to speak at 4 p.m. ET</a> on what he dubbed "Liberation Day," with expectations pointing to the imposition of tariffs around 20% on a broad range of goods.
The S&amp;P 500 is up 0.8%, aiming for what could become its third consecutive positive session. The Nasdaq 100 is also rebounding strongly, rising 1.1%, while small-cap stocks outperform large caps, with the Russell 2000 climbing 1.5%.
Nearly all sectors are in the green, except defensive consumer staples. Consumer discretionary and tech lead the way in performance.
Treasury yields are on the rise, with the 30-year yield hitting 4.57%, up 5 basis points, dragging the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) down by 0.7%.
The latest ADP Employment Report showed a stronger-than-expected pace of private payroll growth in March, reinforcing the resilience of the U.S. labor market despite the tariff-related uncertainties.

Wall Street Rebounds Ahead Of Tariff Announcement, Small Caps Rally, Bitcoin Hits $87,000: What's Driving Markets Wednesday?

Americans are still spending, but not as freely as before. JPMorgan analyst Richard Shane notes that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/consumer-spending">overall spending growth</a> slowed to 2.4% in March, down from earlier in the year. 
Blame it on cautious consumers, a later Easter, or just a tough comparison to 2024 &#8211; but the numbers don't lie.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gen Z, Millennials Keep the Party Going</h2>
Younger consumers aren't feeling the pinch just yet. Their spending shot up nearly 5% in March, well ahead of older generations, where spending has flatlined, says Shane. Whether it's streaming subscriptions, dining out, or the latest must-have gadgets, this cohort continues to drive the economy forward.

Not all purchases are getting the green light. Shane notes that consumers are prioritizing essentials, with non-discretionary spending up 3.1%, while discretionary spending lagged at 2%.
Travel-related purchases like airline tickets and hotels took a hit, reflecting a pullback in big-ticket splurges.
While the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLP#NYSE">XLP</a>) is up 4.36% YTD, the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLY#NYSE">XLY</a>) is down 9.88% YTD; down 5.88% over the past month alone.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gas Prices Offer A Surprise Relief</h2>
Here's one bright spot: spending at gas stations plummeted over 10%, thanks to lower oil prices. The Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) has gained over 7% in the past month.
That's good news for middle- and lower-income households, as cheaper fuel means more cash for other necessities.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Health, Wellness Get A Boost</h2>
One area still on the rise? Healthcare and pharmacy spending, which climbed 8%. Consumers are prioritizing health, perhaps a lingering effect of pandemic-era habits or simply an aging population driving demand.
With economic uncertainty looming, it's clear that consumers are tightening their wallets in some areas while splurging in others. 
As Shane puts it, the data reveals a shift in priorities—where Gen Z swipes, and Boomers hesitate, shaping the spending landscape for the months ahead.

Markets faltered on Friday, with Wall Street reeling as investors hurried to shed risk in the face of mounting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44537936/consumer-inflation-expectations-skyrocket-in-march-hit-highest-levels-in-32-years">inflation and tariff uncertainties.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 fell 2.1% by 1:30 p.m. trading in New York, on track to end the week with losses. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 tumbled 2.6%, and the Dow fell 1.7%. 
All members of the Magnificent Seven group were in the red, with Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) marking the widest drops, both down 4.4%.
Earlier on Friday, the Fed's favorite inflation gauge – the core Personal Consumption Expenditure price index – rose 2.8% on a yearly basis in February, surprising estimates of 2.7%. 
Investor anxiety deepened following the latest University of Michigan Survey of Consumers, which showed 5-year forward inflation expectations jumping to 4.1% — a 0.2-point increase from prior estimates and the highest reading since February 1993. As stocks fell in unison, a flight to safety ensued, sending gold up 1% to a record-breaking $3,090 per ounce. Treasury bonds also rallied, with yields declining across all maturities. 
Price action in commodities was mixed with oil down 1% and natural gas up 2.4%. Sentiment in crypto also took a sharp hit, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) down by 4% to below $84,000, flipping to weekly losses.

Leading And Lagging Sectors For March 28, 2025

Wall Street dipped slightly on Thursday, with all major indexes edging into the red as investors digested President Donald Trump&#8216;s latest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44517885/trump-slaps-25-tariffs-on-autos-what-it-means-for-your-next-car-purchase">move on auto tariffs.</a>
Late Wednesday, Trump announced a 25% tariff on all auto imports starting next week, with duties on auto parts set to follow in May.
European automakers took a hit, with Mercedes-Benz Group AG (OTCPK: MBGAF) and Porsche Automobile Holding SE (OTCPK: POAHF) sliding 2.5% and 5%, respectively. 
Michigan-based carmakers didn't fare much better. Shares of Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) fell 2.5%, while General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) plunged 6.5%, with the latter marking the worst performance on the S&amp;P 500.
In contrast, U.S. electric vehicle makers rallied. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) rose 2.6%, and Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>) jumped 5%. The rally followed comments from Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Delenay, who pointed to their fully domestic production as a significant advantage <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44515578/trumps-25-tariff-set-to-hike-imported-car-prices-up-to-15000-higher-goldman-sachs-warns">under the new tariffs.</a>
Meanwhile, gold extended its rally, climbing over 1% and testing record highs as the U.S. dollar softened. Silver gained 2%, while copper pulled back 2% after a strong run that had lifted it to all-time highs.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) held firm at $86,875, signaling a cautious tone across the crypto market.

<li>AutoZone Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AZO#NYSE">AZO</a>) rallied 3.7% to fresh record highs in reaction to import tariffs on automotive parts.</li>
<li>Shares of car rental firms also rallied amid potentially higher margins. Avis Budget Group Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CAR#NASDAQ">CAR</a>) and Hertz Global Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HTZ#NASDAQ">HTZ</a>) both rocketed by about 20%. </li>
<li>GameStop Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GME#NYSE">GME</a>) plunged 22% after it announced a private offering of convertible debt to buy Bitcoin.</li>
<li>New Fortress Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFE#NASDAQ">NFE</a>) tumbled more than 10% after the company announced plans to divest its natural gas assets and operations in Jamaica. </li>
<li>Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LULU#NASDAQ">LULU</a>) will report its earnings after the close. Shares were up 0.7%. </li>
