<p>Wall Street witnessed a positive momentum on Thursday as investor risk appetite remained resilient despite escalating geopolitical tensions in Europe. The market brushed off concerns following a Russian missile strike on a Ukrainian military facility overnight, which came in response to Ukrainian missile <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42113449/natural-gas-prices-spike-to-over-1-year-highs-oil-surges-to-70-as-russia-fires-intercontinental-ballistic-missile-to-ukraine">attacks earlier this week. </a></p>
<p>Russian President <strong>Vladimir Putin</strong>, in a televised address on Thursday, stated that after the use of long-range missiles from Ukraine, &#8220;the regional conflict gained elements of global one.&#8221;</p>
<p>Major U.S. indices traded higher by midday trading in New York, with standout performances among blue-chip stocks and small-cap equities. </p>
<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 500 points, reaching 43,965, marking a 1.3% gain and its strongest session in over two weeks.</p>
<p>The Russell 2000 outperformed with a 1.7% jump, setting up its best day since the post-election rally. </p>
<p>In contrast, the Nasdaq 100 lagged slightly, rising 0.5%. <strong>Nvidia Corp. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>), despite higher-than-expected earnings, failed to spark broader optimism in the tech sector. Meanwhile, shares of <strong>Alphabet Inc</strong>. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>)(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) tumbled nearly 6% after the Department of Justice (DOJ) mandated the sale of Google Chrome aimed at curbing Google&#8217;s dominant position in search and digital advertising.</p>
<p>Geopolitical uncertainties drove strong gains in the commodities market. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/24/11/42118286/7-us-natural-gas-stocks-to-watch-as-henry-hub-prices-surge-50-in-november">Natural gas Henry Hub prices </a>soared 5%, bringing year-to-date gains to over 50% and marking the best monthly performance since July 2022. Crude oil prices also climbed 0.9%, supported by supply concerns.</p>
<p>Gold extended its winning streak, rising 0.7% for its fourth consecutive session of gains as investors sought safe-haven assets.</p>
<p><strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) continued its rally, rising over 3% and hitting an intraday high of $98,367. The largest cryptocurrency now hovers tantalizingly close to the $100,000 milestone. </p>

<p>Investor sentiment remained subdued on Wednesday as escalating geopolitical tensions weighed on risk assets ahead of the week&#8217;s most anticipated event: <strong>Nvidia Corp.&#8217;s</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) third-quarter earnings report, set to be <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/24/11/42093025/will-nvidia-deliver-a-blowout-beat-in-q3-poll-says-maybe-not-but-over-half-see-stock-clearing-150">released after market close.</a></p>
<p>The market mood deteriorated further after multiple outlets confirmed Ukraine&#8217;s deployment of U.K.-made Storm Shadow missiles into Russian territory, a day after launching U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles.</p>

<p>Today, Walmart announced third-quarter results and raised its fiscal-2025 guidance. The retailer reported adjusted EPS of 58 cents, beating the consensus of 53 cents. Sales were $169.59 billion, up <a href="https://corporate.walmart.com/content/dam/corporate/documents/newsroom/2024/11/19/walmart-releases-q3-fy25-earnings/q3-fy25-earnings-release.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">5.5</a>% year over year or 6.2% (at constant currency), <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42060801/walmart-tops-q3-estimates-ecommerce-growth-shines-with-27-lifts-full-year-forecast" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beating the consensus of $167.72 billion. </a></p>
<p>For FY25, Walmart raised its adjusted EPS outlook to $2.42 – $2.47 (from $2.35 – $2.43), vs. the consensus of $2.45. Walmart boosted FY25 net sales (at constant currency) growth guidance to 4.8% – 5.1% from 3.75% – 4.75% earlier.</p>

<p>Investors grappled with growing uncertainties surrounding the economic impacts of <strong>Donald Trump</strong>'s policies and the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">Federal Reserve&#8217;s next moves.</a></p>
<p>Fed Chair <strong>Jerome Powell</strong>'s remarks from the previous day weighed heavily on risk assets. Powell signaled no need to lower rates, citing the economy's resilience and emphasizing the importance of fully finishing the inflation jobs. </p>
<p>Boston Fed President <strong>Susan Collins</strong> added to the uncertainty on Friday, stating she needs to see additional data before deciding on further rate cuts at the Federal Reserve&#8217;s upcoming policy meeting.</p>
<p>Expectations for a 25-basis-point rate cut in December were significantly scaled back, with odds falling to 59%, down from 82% just a day earlier.</p>
<p>U.S. indices are poised to end the week in negative territory, as optimism fueled by Trump's win fizzled. Tech stocks were hit hardest, with the Nasdaq 100 plunging 2.5%, wiping out its post-election gains. </p>

<p>Signs of a waning Trump-led rally emerged Thursday as investors assessed the economic outlook and awaited potential signals on the interest-rate path from the upcoming Fed Chair <strong>Jerome Powell</strong>&#8216;s speech in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/jerome-powell">Dallas at 3 p.m. ET. </a></p>
<p>Inflation data from the past two days provided mixed signals: consumer prices met expectations, while producer prices slightly exceeded forecasts, with both indicators showing a year-over-year uptick in October.</p>
<p>Despite this inflation data, markets remain confident the Fed will continue easing, pricing in an 80% likelihood of a December rate cut.</p>
<p>Wall Street&#8217;s major indices were in the red by midday, with the S&amp;P 500 down 0.3% and small-cap stocks lagging behind large-caps.</p>
<p>The U.S. dollar index ticked up 0.1%, even as Treasury yields declined. Bonds outperformed equities, with the <strong>iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) climbing 1.2%.</p>

<p>Wall Street saw a modest rebound on Wednesday, spurred by an in-line inflation report that reinforced expectations for a December rate cut. The U.S. dollar continued to gain strength, buoyed by potential tariff tailwinds under <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">the new Trump administration.</a></p>
<p><strong>Bitcoin</strong> again captured headlines as it surged past $93,000, lifting its market capitalization to $1.8 trillion and fueling a wave of enthusiasm across crypto markets, with <strong>Dogecoin</strong> up over 12%.</p>
<p>The Consumer Price Index met expectations in October, with the annual headline rate increasing to 2.6% and the core <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/11/41938762/october-inflation-rate-rises-to-2-6-as-expected-december-interest-rate-cut-remains-uncertain">rate steady at 3.3%. </a></p>
<p>The report alleviated concerns over a potential rate pause in December, driving market odds for a 25-basis-point cut from 58% to 82%, as per the CME FedWatch tool. Treasury yields eased slightly in response to the report.</p>
<p>By midday in New York, all major U.S. equity indices were in slightly positive territory, although with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 underperforming. Leading sectors included consumer discretionary and real estate, while utilities and health care lagged.</p>
<p>In political developments, U.S. Sen. <strong>John Thune </strong>(R-SD) was elected as the new majority leader in a secret ballot.</p>

<p>Wall Street saw the first surge in risk aversion after <strong>Donald Trump</strong>'s election victory last week, as concerns grew over potential tariffs and trade policy shifts spurred by the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/24/11/41902202/trumps-china-hawks-rumored-for-top-roles-yuan-hits-3-month-low"> incoming administration's key appointments.</a></p>
<p>Trump is reportedly considering Sen. <strong>Marco Rubio</strong> (R-Fla.) for secretary of state and Rep. <strong>Mike Waltz </strong>(R-Fla.) for national security advisor. Both are vocal hawks on China and NATO, raising concerns of a tougher U.S. stance that could strain key geopolitical and trade relationships.</p>
<p>Adding to the cautious sentiment, investors are bracing for Wednesday's key inflation data release, with economists forecasting the annual rate to hit 2.6% in October.</p>
<p>As of midday trading in New York, none of the major U.S. equity indices posted gains, while small caps underperformed, with the Russell 2000 down 1.5%. Ten out of 11 S&amp;P 500 sectors traded in the red, with consumer staples the only marking tiny gains.</p>
<p>Chinese stocks suffered steep declines, with major U.S.-listed companies falling between 5% and 9% as worries over potential tariffs spooked investors.</p>
<p>The dollar, viewed as a hedge against tariff risk, strengthened, with a currency-weighted index reaching its highest level since May 2024. </p>
<p>The Japanese yen slipped past 154.7 per dollar, fully erasing gains from the Bank of Japan's August intervention, while the Chinese yuan and the euro also weakened, with the euro falling below $1.06.</p>
<p>Treasury yields climbed, with the 10-year Treasury yield up eight basis points to 4.42%, pushing the popular <strong>iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) down 1.2%.</p>
<p>The cryptocurrency market also faced pressure, with <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) down 1.6%. <p>In the first three months following Trump's 2016 election, financials stocks saw significant gains. </p>
<p>The <strong>Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (XLF) rose by 17.2% between Nov. 8, 2016, and Jan. 10, 2017, outpacing all other sectors. The rally was driven by anticipation of deregulation and tax cuts, which boosted investor confidence in banks and other financial stocks.</p>
<p>Conversely, <strong>consumer staples</strong> and <strong>utilities</strong> — traditionally defensive sectors — were the weakest performers in that initial period, with losses of 2.39% and 2.3%, respectively.</p>

<p>On November 6, 2024, the day after Trump's re-election was confirmed, market activity showed a familiar pattern with <strong>financials</strong> and <strong>industrials</strong> posting the strongest gains. </p>

How Did S&P 500 Stock Sectors Perform During Trump's First Term? Could This Time Be Different?

<p>The S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average surged to record levels on Wednesday after <strong>Donald Trump </strong>was elected as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">the 47th U.S. president.</a></p>
<p>In Congress, Republicans clinched a majority in the Senate, while the House race remains close. As of Wednesday morning&#8217;s tabulations, Republicans held 198 seats versus 180 for Democrats.</p>
<p>The S&amp;P 500 index, as tracked by the <strong>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), climbed 2% to 5,900 points, while the Dow soared over 3% to 43,500 points. The blue-chip index, monitored through the <strong>SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), marked its biggest single-day gain since November 2022.</p>
<p>The financials and industrials sectors were the top performers, up 5.2% and 3%, respectively.</p>
<p>The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 witnessed smaller gains, up 1.8%, while small-cap stocks skyrocketed, with the Russell 2000 index spiking over 5%.  </p>
<p>The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), often called the &#8220;fear gauge,&#8221; plummeted 22%, indicating waning investor concerns amid post-election optimism.</p>
<p>Investors are responding positively to the prospect of more lenient tax policies under the upcoming Trump administration, though inflation risks and potential shifts in Federal Reserve policy highlighted by economists seem to be largely overlooked by the market for now.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Economic Implications Of A Trump Presidency, Goldman Sachs Weighs In</h3>
<p>&#8220;If Republicans secure a narrow House majority, this would likely enable a full extension of the 2017 tax cuts, set to expire in 2025, potentially with some reinstated business investment incentives,&#8221; wrote <strong>Jan Hatzius</strong>, Goldman Sachs&#8217; chief economist.</p>
<p>A Republican-controlled Congress may also drive increased federal spending, particularly on defense, Goldman Sachs indicated.</p>
<p>"We would expect Trump to impose additional tariffs averaging 20% on imports from China," Hatzius added, highlighting that this policy could provide a &#8220;one-time boost to core PCE inflation&#8221; and &#8220;a modest drag on GDP.&#8221;</p>
<p>Goldman Sachs projects that the incoming Trump administration would likely pursue a more relaxed approach to regulation, especially in energy, financial services, and labor. </p>
<p>However, while antitrust oversight may soften somewhat, scrutiny of the tech sector is expected to persist.</p>
