Big Moves At Intel: These 3 ETFs Stand To Benefit

Microchip Technology Incorporated (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MCHP#NASDAQ">MCHP</a>) shares are trading lower premarket on Thursday. On Wednesday, the company disclosed the launch of&nbsp;a public offering of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/03/g44405834/microchip-technology-announces-launch-of-offering-of-depositary-shares-representing-interests-in-s" rel="noreferrer noopener">$1.35 billion of depositary shares</a>.
Each share represents a 1/20th interest in newly issued Series A Mandatory Convertible Preferred Stock.
The company has also granted underwriters a 13-day option to purchase up to an additional $135 million in depositary shares to cover over-allotments.
Microchip plans to allocate part of the net proceeds to fund capped call transactions and, if the over-allotment option is exercised, additional capped call transactions.
The remaining funds will be used to repay existing debt, including outstanding notes under its commercial paper program.
In conjunction with the pricing of the depositary shares, Microchip plans to enter into privately negotiated capped call transactions with one or more underwriters, their affiliates, or other financial institutions.
As of December 31, cash and short-term <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/g43545040/microchip-technology-announces-financial-results-for-third-quarter-of-fiscal-year-2025" rel="noreferrer noopener">investments stood at $586 million</a>.

Allegro MicroSystems Board Deems ON Semiconductor's $6.9B Offer 'Inadequate'

JX Advanced Metals, a subsidiary of oil titan Eneos, is planning to raise an estimated ¥460 billion ($3 billion) through an initial public offering (IPO). This IPO is anticipated to be the largest in Japan since 2018.
What Happened: The firm has proposed a tentative price of ¥862 ($5.65) per share, as per a submission to the Finance Ministry. The final price will be determined on March 10, with JX Advanced Metals slated for its Tokyo Stock Exchange listing on March 19, <a href="https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2025/02/14/companies/jx-advanced-metals-ipo/">reported</a> The Japan Times on Friday.

"To me, it's an overreaction," Fundstrat Global Advisors‘ head of research Tom Lee <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/27/tom-lee-calls-market-sell-off-overreaction-nvidia-falls-on-deepseek-news.html?taid=67980792a96d920001c44f58&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter%7Cmain">told </a>CNBC's "Closing Bell," comparing the drop to Nvidia Corp.&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) March 2020 decline that proved to be a significant <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/01/43259288/fundstrats-tom-lee-sees-nvidias-17-plunge-as-an-opportunity-calls-nasdaqs-over-600-points-plunge-drop-a-market-overreaction">entry point</a> for investors.

Why It Matters: According to Moulik, DeepSeek&#8217;s claim of lower training costs of $6 million vs ChatGPT&#8217;s $100 million plus, remains unverified. The Chinese firm's reliance on less-advanced Nvidia chips, due to U.S. chip export restrictions, could also hinder its ability to maintain a competitive edge in AI development.
Even if DeepSeek&#8217;s cost claims hold, it&#8217;s still positive for Big Tech, said Moulik, as AI extends beyond Large Language Models. Cost-effective LLM training allows U.S. companies to prioritize <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/01/43222744/verizon-launches-ai-connect-as-mckinsey-predicts-that-60-70-of-ai-workload-will-shift-from-training-to-inferencing-by-2030">LLM inferencing</a> – the next stage. Inferencing involves applying pre-trained LLMs for real-world tasks, optimizing AI investments by shifting focus from costly training to scalable, practical applications, ultimately driving long-term growth.
"For industry leaders like Microsoft Corp. and Alphabet Inc., this means redirecting massive spending from training infrastructure to real-world applications such as search, customer service, and automation," added Moulik. The Biden administration is reportedly considering a new set of sanctions over the next few days. According to a Bloomberg report, the new sanctions may include a three-tier framework targeting AI chip exports, aiming to curb China's access to advanced technology. These restrictions could take effect before Donald Trump assumes office on Jan. 20.
Nvidia, a sector heavyweight, faces a double whammy. In addition to the potential export restrictions, Nvidia's hyperscaler customers — Microsoft (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>), Amazon&#8217;s (NADAQ: AMZN) AWS, Alphabet (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>), and Meta (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) — recently postponed $10 billion worth of orders for its Blackwell GB200 data center racks due to overheating issues. This disruption adds to the challenges Nvidia faces, as up to 50% of its chips may be destined for markets that could fall under the new export rules, according to D.A. The contract chipmaker aims to complete production of plants in Arizona in 2025 and Dresden in 2027. Construction of Taiwan Semiconductor&#8217;s second Japanese factory will likely begin near the Kikuyo plant, the Japan News <a target="_blank" href="https://japannews.yomiuri.co.jp/business/companies/20250106-231710/" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>.
Taiwan commanded 67% of the global market share in contracted semiconductor manufacturing and nearly 80% in cutting-edge products in 2023, the Japan News cites TrendForce.
Taiwan attempted to shield itself from geopolitical tension by concentrating production on the island. Still, it also remains focused on its geographical diversification to help the world boost its semiconductor base by reducing its dependence on China, whose semiconductor supply chain was disrupted during the 2020 pandemic.
Kumamoto Gov. Takashi Kimura shared with Japan Times the country&#8217;s hopes to attract Taiwan Semiconductor&#8217;s third plant in the prefecture.
The new plant, located in Kikuyo, began commercializing 12-28 nm technology last December. It caters to Sony Group Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SONY#NYSE">SONY</a>), which produces camera sensors for Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>).
Taiwan Semiconductor is proficient in making general-purpose chips between 12 and 28 nm. However, chip plants in Japan failed to produce semiconductors thinner than 40 nm, prompting them to tap the Taiwanese chipmaker.
Taiwan Semiconductor is building a new plant in Arizona, where commercialization of 4-nm chips will likely begin between January and March. It aims to complete its debut European plant in Dresden in 2027. The plant targets a quadrupolar production plan with principal plants in Taiwan, Japan, the U.S., and Germany.
Meanwhile, some concerns loom in the form of President-elect Donald Trump taking charge on January 20.
The U.S. posted a significant trade deficit with Taiwan in 2023, prompting Trump to verbally attack the country during his presidential campaigns for allegedly depriving the U.S. of the semiconductor industry.
He suggested redemption by slapping tariffs on Taiwan, which can increase the contract chipmaker&#8217;s production costs since labor costs in the U.S. are about 30% higher than in Taiwan.
Taiwan Semiconductor stock surged over 115% in the last 12 months.
Goldman Sachs&#8216; Bruce Lu projected <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42825523/taiwan-semi-likely-for-upside-backed-by-ai-demand-and-advanced-node-pricing-analyst-says" rel="noreferrer noopener">another year of </a>robust revenue growth for Taiwan Semiconductor in 2025E, 26.8%, following 29.4% revenue growth in 2024E (all in USD terms). Demand in leading-edge nodes, mainly supported by AI, backed this growth.

What Happened: A day after the U.S. blacklisted 140 Chinese entities and restricted exports of memory chips vital to artificial intelligence, Beijing retaliated with export bans and reviews for U.S.-bound shipments of these minerals. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce justified the measures as necessary for national security.
China also cautioned its businesses against purchasing American chips due to reliability and safety concerns. 
The restricted minerals are critical to the U.S. economy and defense supply chains, with Beijing accounting for a significant portion of imports between 2019 and 2022. For instance, the U.S. relied on China for 80% of its antimony needs during this period, WSJ reports.

China Retaliates Against US Chip Sanctions, Tightens Mineral Exports

On Monday, the outgoing Biden administration will implement its third crackdown on China&#8217;s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/semiconductors" rel="noreferrer noopener">semiconductor industry</a> within three years, citing the same national security threats as reasons it mentioned for its prior sanctions, intensifying geopolitical tensions between the countries.
The initiative, launching Monday, will impose export restrictions on 140 Chinese entities, including chip equipment manufacturers such as Naura Technology Group and other firms, targeting advanced memory chips and chipmaking tools.

Companies on the list will require special licenses to receive shipments from U.S. suppliers, with most license requests likely to be denied.
The new rules also expand the foreign direct product rule, restricting exports from U.S., Japanese, and Dutch manufacturers to essential Chinese chip plants.
Due to agreements with the U.S., Japan and the Netherlands are exempt, which relieves ASML Holding N.V. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASML#NASDAQ">ASML</a>)&nbsp;and&nbsp;Tokyo Electron Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TOELY#OTC">TOELY</a>).

The NYSE said it is investigating the reported technical issue. &#8220;Additional information will follow as soon as possible,&#8221; NYSE-owner Intercontinental Exchange Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ICE#NYSE">ICE</a>) stated. 
Among the largest companies halted on Monday were Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BRK#NYSE">BRK</a>) at 9:50:52 a.m. ET and Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMG#NYSE">CMG</a>) at 9:44:58 a.m. ET.

Berkshire Hathaway, Chipotle, More NYSE Stocks Hit With Trading Halts Triggered By Technical Issues (UPDATED)

Needham analyst N. Quinn Bolton upgraded Silicon Laboratories, Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SLAB#NASDAQ">SLAB</a>) to a Buy rating from a Hold rating with a price target of $150.
According to the analyst, the company is well-positioned for the semiconductor cyclical recovery. 
Following the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/04/38409522/silicon-labs-still-in-early-stages-of-recovery-ceo-says-citing-sharp-revenue-drop" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">first-quarter earnings</a> report, Bolton expects consensus estimates will reflect a more moderate recovery. 
The analyst flagged how the management called out three drivers that underpin a second-half recovery, including inventory de-stocking, the ramp of new design wins and improvements in end market demand.
Bolton is encouraged by improving inventory levels at end customers and distributors, increasing order trends, robust operating leverage and new design wins that ramp up production this year. 
With Street estimates moving closer to his more conservative outlook post-earnings, he noted Street estimates are more attainable.
Bolton said Silicon Laboratories is the best-positioned company in the fast-growing IoT space and is set to achieve double-digit top-line growth into calendar year 2026. 
With high revenue growth and operating leverage, he noted investors will be willing to pay a premium multiple for SLAB in the cyclical recovery.
Channel mix and revenue levels are key gross margin drivers, and he expected both to improve in the second half.
Bolton expects the mix to trend higher post-second-quarter as end customers continue to burn inventory this quarter.
Bolton projects 2024 revenue and EPS of $601.4 million (prior $600.0 million) and $(1.85) (prior $(1.40)).
Silicon Laboratories stock lost 24% in the past 12 months. Silicon Laboratories Poised for Growth, Eyeing Strong IoT Expansion: Analyst

Silicon Laboratories&nbsp;Inc&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SLAB#NASDAQ">SLAB</a>)&nbsp;reported fiscal first-quarter 2024 sales of $106.4 million, down 56.9%&nbsp;Y/Y, beating the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/04/n38399872/silicon-labs-reports-first-quarter-2024-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $105.1 million</a>.&nbsp;
The fabless global technology&nbsp;company's&nbsp;adjusted EPS loss of $(0.92) beat the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus loss of $(0.98)</a>.
Margins:&nbsp;Adjusted&nbsp;gross margin of 52.2% and adjusted operating margin loss of (36.5)% fell from 62.5% and 19.2% a&nbsp;year ago, respectively.&nbsp;
Industrial&nbsp;&amp; Commercial&nbsp;revenue for the quarter was $65 million, down from $151 million a year ago. Home&nbsp;&amp; Life&nbsp;revenue for the quarter was $41 million, down from $96 million a year earlier.
CFO Transition:&nbsp;Dean Butler&nbsp;will join the company as CFO on&nbsp;May 15, 2024. Butler will succeed&nbsp;Mark Mauldin, who is currently serving as interim CFO.
Silicon Labs CEO Matt Johnson said, &#8220;While we are still in the early stages of the recovery, we expect revenue growth to accelerate in the second quarter as excess inventory is further reduced, bookings improve, and design wins continue to ramp.&#8221;
Outlook: Silicon Lab expects&nbsp;a&nbsp;second-quarter revenue of $135 million&nbsp;&#8211; $145&nbsp;million versus the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $141.41 million</a>.
The company projects an adjusted EPS loss of $(0.58) – $(0.70), against the consensus loss of $(0.45).
Silicon Laboratories stock&nbsp;lost 24% in the last 12 months.
