O'Dell's day job, which he does during his four-day, 10-hour work week, requires extremely high attention to detail. O'Dell told CNBC's "<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/22/legit-kits-ceo-mike-odell-how-i-built-my-side-hustle-to-run-without-me.html">Make It</a>" that his work as a nurse anesthetist is so intense that he can't even use the bathroom or take a lunch break without another employee to cover for him. This highly specialized work pays O'Dell $240,000 per year, but it also comes with a high-stress level.

There is no such thing as a "do-over" in his profession, and even a small mistake could cost a patient their life. It stands to reason that someone who works in such a high-stakes environment would seek a creative outlet to help decompress from doing such high-stakes work. O'Dell told CNBC that outlet was sewing, a craft he learned 20 years ago to make a "Braveheart" Halloween costume.&nbsp;&nbsp;
According to CNBC, O'Dell realized his passion could be lucrative after sewing two custom <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43952678/lucasfilm-president-kathleen-kennedy-to-step-down-how-move-could-impact-star-wars-franchise-disney-stock">Star Wars</a> themed quilts for his sons in 2020. O'Dell used an innovative method known as "foundation paper piecing" to make them. He began by drawing a giant pattern on a 6'x5' piece of paper and then used his drawing as a sewing guide for the fabric. The final product was not only impressive, but the foundation paper piecing process was also much easier than he expected it to be.
That's when the proverbial light bulb came on for O'Dell, who decided to build a business around making and sewing quilts. The CNBC profile noted that O'Dell ran his company, Legit Kits, with the same methodical approach he used during his day job as an anesthetist.&nbsp; O'Dell knew Legit Quilts had potential, but he also knew it would have been precipitous to quit his day job and go all-in on a new project.

&#8220;The burnout I feel at the hospital fuels my energy to do the other thing for myself,&#8221; O&#8217;Dell said. &#8220;It turns the volume down when everybody&#8217;s mad at work.&#8221; He built Legit Kits to function independently. O'Dell brought in two graphic designers to handle the patterns and another person to cut the individual pieces. Legit Kits customers got a complete kit that allowed them to create much nicer pieces than their skill levels would normally allow.
Legit Kits was a hit with the quilting set, and the company was profitable by 2023. According to CNBC, O'Dell's company was doing enough business to move into a 4,500 square foot warehouse in 2024. Perhaps more impressively, CNBC reported Legit Kits broke even for the year after making such an expensive move.&nbsp; Legit Kits made a very strong $1.25 million in revenue for 2024. That's over $100,000 per month in income.
O'Dell still has his day job, but he spends one day per week at Legit Kits reviewing new designs and marketing. His time at Legit Kits may not be as lucrative as being an anesthetist, but it offers other rewards. O'Dell said that he can enjoy simple pleasures like driving his sons to school and having a leisurely cup of morning coffee on the day he works at Legit Kits.
He told CNBC he will earn an extra $50,000 this year for his work as Legit Kits' CEO and creative director. O'Dell would like to expand, but like many small businesses, he depends on products from Asia to stay profitable, and President Donald Trump's<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/05/45688655/trump-administration-mulls-global-tariffs-of-about-15-for-150-days-under-existing-trade-laws-report"> tariffs</a> have clouded his long-term outlook. O'Dell sources his fabric in Vietnam and Indonesia, whose products are currently subject to 46% and 32% tariffs.
However, those rates are set to be replaced by a blanket 10% tariff that will come into effect in July.  &#8220;The uncertainty is stressful,&#8221; O&#8217;Dell said. &#8220;Optimism is essential these days. Hope mine isn&#8217;t misplaced.&#8221; In the meantime, he has a very lucrative and stress-reducing side hustle. &#8220;I can eat breakfast, I can go to the gym. I set my own schedule," he said.

However, President Trump&#8217;s bill also faced resistance from within his own party. Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina voiced his inability to support the bill due to the severe Medicaid cuts it proposed. Both Tillis and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky voted against the bill.
The bill, dubbed the &#8220;One Big Beautiful Bill Act,&#8221; was unveiled just before midnight on Friday. Senators are expected to engage in debates and amendments over the coming days. If passed, the bill will return&nbsp;to the House for a&nbsp;final round of votes before&nbsp;it can reach the White House.

SALT Provision Compromise Stirs Controversy
According to reports, the Senate has included a compromise in their final draft regarding&nbsp;the so-called SALT provision, a&nbsp;deduction for state and local&nbsp;taxes. 
This&nbsp;has been a top priority&nbsp;for lawmakers from high-tax states like New York. The current SALT cap stands at $10,000 a year, but some Republicans have been advocating for a boost&nbsp;to $40,000 a year. The&nbsp;final draft includes a $40,000&nbsp;cap, but limits it for&nbsp;five years. 
This has drawn criticism from many Republican senators who believe it&#8217;s too generous, while&nbsp;House Republicans are not fully&nbsp;satisfied either.
The updated bill also introduces&nbsp;a new production tax credit&nbsp;for metallurgical coal, used in steelmaking, aligning&nbsp;with GOP support for the&nbsp;fossil fuel industry. The bill notably reduces&nbsp;subsidies for clean power sources&nbsp;like wind and solar, along&nbsp;with tax credits for buying&nbsp;electric vehicles,&nbsp;and instead includes incentives for&nbsp;the coal industry.
The new text also provides&nbsp;a bonus incentive for advanced&nbsp;nuclear facilities built in communities&nbsp;with high levels of employment&nbsp;in the nuclear industry. Additionally,&nbsp;the bill makes metallurgical coal&nbsp;eligible for the advanced manufacturing&nbsp;production tax credit through 2029.

Ken Griffin Says If You Think You're Done With Textbooks After College, You Need 'A New Career'

American credit card debt has surged to an astronomical $1.18 trillion, with a significant number of individuals reportedly concealing their financial predicaments.
What Happened: Nearly 40% of&nbsp;Americans saddled with credit card&nbsp;debt have been dishonest about&nbsp;their financial situation. The report, based on a survey conducted by&nbsp;LendingTree, discloses that individuals with higher income are more prone to hide their debt.
Since 2021, credit card balances have seen a significant increase from a low of $770 billion, a rise partly attributed to government checks issued during the pandemic.
The situation has since deteriorated, with almost half of Americans feeling embarrassed about their debt levels and resorting to downplaying or concealing it.
The <a href="https://www.lendingtree.com/credit-cards/study/debt-lies/">report </a>also highlighted that 46% of Americans are now grappling with some form of credit card debt, with half of those earning six figures also in debt.

Why It Matters: Despite the escalating debt, LendingTree asserts that most Americans believe they have their credit card debt under control, irrespective of their comfort level in discussing it with their loved ones. 
This alarming trend of increasing debt and the accompanying denial could potentially lead to a financial crisis if left unchecked. 
The report underscores the urgent need for financial literacy and transparency in personal finance, to prevent the debt situation from spiraling out of control.

Passively managed ETFs that mirror benchmarks like the S&amp;P 500 typically have low expense ratios. It's realistic to find passively managed ETFs that have expense ratios below 0.10%.&nbsp;
Investors can further explore index funds by analyzing their total returns. You can look at how much a fund has returned over the past five and ten years to gauge if it's consistent or volatile. It's also good to look at a fund's asset allocation to see if most of the stocks are in the tech sector or another industry.
Some investors also look at a fund's yield to see how much cash flow they will receive just by holding on to shares. While most investors shouldn't prioritize a fund based on its yield, receiving passive income from investments becomes more valuable as you get closer to retirement.

One American neurosurgeon responded directly to Musk's claim on X, <a href="https://x.com/DrSAdusumilli/status/1916612237558419743">saying</a>:
"This is false. As a neurosurgeon, I promise you that no &#8220;robot&#8221; surgeon can EVER autonomously perform brain and spine surgery or likely any surgeries effectively, appropriately or safely. Too many variables require critical thinking."
Another <a href="https://x.com/dr_francisco79/status/1916600843987546183">surgeon chimed in writing</a>: "The problem is that the human body is not a machine and, in surgery in particular, the unexpected happens all the time."

Leaders in outpatient surgery centers echoed those concerns to<a href="https://ascnews.com/2025/04/ai-surgery-debate-heats-up-after-elon-musks-robot-prediction/"> Ambulatory Surgery Center News</a>.
Wes Battiste, CEO of Destin Surgery Center, pushed back diplomatically:
"I admire Elon Musk as an exceptional entrepreneur and visionary. But I would beg to differ with him in regard to his recent post referencing AI replacing surgeons in the next five years."
Battiste emphasized that while AI excels at analyzing patterns, surgery involves subjective decisions and unpredictable anatomy — the kind that doesn't always match textbook diagrams.
"Medicine is called an art and not a science for a reason," he said.
Others, like Michael McClain of Left Coast Healthcare Advisors, warned of regulation lagging behind AI's capabilities:&nbsp;
"There is a ton of work to do in terms of safety, reliability, liability and governance before truly autonomous surgery is a remote possibility."
Robotic systems will absolutely keep playing a bigger role in operating rooms. But for now, most experts agree they're still just tools — not replacements.
Joan Dentler, founder of Avanza Healthcare Strategies, summed up what many doctors were thinking when she told ASCN:

The poster's friend is 67, still working full-time, and just sold his house. He hasn't started collecting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/management/25/06/46056038/still-working-at-69-eligible-for-social-security-should-he-keep-waiting-or-claim-now">Social Security</a> yet, but a bank advisor told him he should claim now — or risk "losing money" because of a so-called "look back" tied to his high income.
Commenters quickly weighed in, but let's break down what's really going on — and whether the advisor's warning holds up.

Because the man is already 67, he's reached his full retirement age, or FRA, under <a href="https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10069.pdf">Social Security rules</a>. That means he can earn as much as he wants from working — or from selling his home — and it won't reduce his monthly benefit at all.
Claiming now is an option, but not a requirement. And waiting a bit longer will actually increase his benefit thanks to delayed retirement credits, which add about 8% per year up to age 70.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Will Selling the House Hurt His Benefits?</h2>
This is where the bank advisor's claim gets shaky.
Social Security only cares about earned income — money from working or self-employment — when it comes to calculating any reductions in benefits before FRA. Once you hit FRA, those limits go away entirely.
On top of that, profits from a home sale are considered capital gains, not earned income. They don't affect your Social Security benefit calculation — and there's no "look back" rule in Social Security that would penalize him later.

As some of the commenters on the thread mentioned, the "look back" the advisor mentioned probably comes from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/management/25/06/46044386/ill-lose-my-marriage-72-year-old-man-asks-if-hes-a-bad-son-for-applying-for-medicaid-to-place-his-broke-94-year-old-mom-in-a-nursing-home">Medicaid</a>, not Social Security. Medicaid has a five-year look-back period to see if applicants transferred assets below market value in an attempt to qualify for long-term care coverage.
That rule has nothing to do with claiming Social Security benefits.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Could Medicare Costs Go Up?</h2>
Here's the one area where income from a house sale might have an impact: Medicare.
If the sale significantly increases his taxable income this year — with the sale of his property, his annual income this year went from $87,000 to $300,000 — he could get hit with higher Medicare premiums in a couple of years. Medicare uses a two-year income "look back" to determine whether someone owes Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount, or IRMAA, surcharges on their premiums.
But this doesn't affect whether or not he should claim Social Security — it's a separate issue.

There's no penalty for waiting once you hit <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45534539/social-security-full-retirement-age-shift-means-filing-at-62-could-chop-your-check-by-30-what-every-worker-born-in-1960-or-later-must-know">full retirement age</a>, and in this case, there's no financial downside to holding off — especially if he doesn't need the money yet.

In the same conversation, Ohanian explained that he photographed "half-finished" cartoon rockets he drew as a kid and let ChatGPT return "full-color illustrations" in seconds.&nbsp;
"I want Olympia using it every day," he said, arguing that access to super-intelligence will soon be table stakes for homework. "It was just so wild to see her reaction to it," he said when the new drawings appeared. Ohanian recalled how the second-grader immediately asked to "make it fly through space."&nbsp;
"I still need her to know the fundamentals of reading and writing and arithmetic," Ohanian said, "but I want her to know that the raw intelligence part has been solved." Beyond art, he points to the AI-powered tutoring platform <a href="https://www.synthesis.com/tutor">Synthesis</a> as Olympia's homework helper—a tool that drills math and logic while still encouraging her to practice traditional pencil skills.
