"Progress takes countries up the curve from subsistence to prosperity, and along the way, they transition from agriculture to manufacturing to service-based economies. That happened everywhere. It wasn't just in the United States."
Turning to tariffs, Marks provides a nuanced analysis. Tariffs, often promoted as a means of protecting domestic industries and securing supply chains, are essentially taxes on imports. He concedes that tariffs might achieve goals like supporting U.S. manufacturing, reducing the trade deficit, and deterring unfair foreign practices. But the tradeoffs are substantial.
Consumers face higher prices, domestic producers may lose their incentive to innovate, and American exports can suffer as retaliatory measures take effect. Tariffs create artificial advantages that shield local industries from competition but at a cost to consumers and global efficiency.
"They impede foreign competition, enabling domestic manufacturers to sell their products even if they represent an inferior bargain," Marks notes.
Turning to the past, he references historian Niall Ferguson, who argues that industrial decline in the U.S. was inevitable due to <a target="_blank" href="https://appropriations.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/republicans-appropriations.house.gov/files/migrated/UploadedFiles/03.28.12_CJS_-_American_Manufacturing_and_Job_Repatriation_-_Niall_Ferguson_-_Testimony.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">structural economic evolution</a>. As GDP rises, manufacturing employment naturally declines and shifts to services.
"We cannot go back to the 1950s&#8230;not socially, and not economically," Ferguson states. According to Marks, even if manufacturing in America is nostalgic and symbolic, it isn't economically viable on a broad scale due to significantly higher costs.

There&#8217;s a trading strategy that can let you collect income while you wait for the stock to grow to its full potential.
The strategy in question &#8211; covered calls &#8211; is used to earn income from a range-bound asset by selling a call option on a stock you already own. In this trade, you would sell a call option with a strike price slightly above the stock's current market price and collect the upfront premium. Your obligation to the option buyer is "covered" by the 100 shares you already own. If the strike price is reached and the call is exercised, you deliver 100 shares to the buyer and retain the premium.
However, if the call expires without hitting the strike, you keep the stock and pocket the premium as a profit. The upside is limited, but your downside risk is protected by collecting the premium and owning the stock.

Ford is currently trading near the lower bound of its range, which means less premium collected on the call option, but also a slimmer chance of the stock reaching the strike price (which should be set around the $15 resistance level). 
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Colgate-Palmolive Co. </h2>
Consumer staples companies like Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CL#NYSE">CL</a>) make decent covered call candidates since they often have thin margins, steady demand, and low beta stocks. In other words, they don&#8217;t move much. However, CL shares make a different type of candidate as the stock's range has been narrowing in a wedge pattern, which could signal a consolidation of capital preparing to alter the current trend.

Shares of auto-insurance companies are trading lower after a Goldman Sachs note indicated that insurance costs are projected to decline due to disruptions from self-driving cars, which may result in fewer accidents and shifting risks.

 As vehicles become safer and smarter, Goldman sees a major transformation in how risk is priced and how legal liability is assigned.
"The two primary long-term risks to auto insurers, are declines in accident frequency and changes in claim costs and legal liability," Delaney said.
Autonomy, especially through Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), is already reducing accident frequency while simultaneously pushing up repair costs due to increasingly complex vehicles. 
Goldman forecasts that even with declining accident rates, a modest rise in total vehicle count and higher cost per claim—driven by both tech-heavy cars and litigation—will support modest premium growth over the next 10 to 15 years.
&#8220;We expect a continuation of the modest real growth that the auto insurance market has produced over recent decades/years, driven by increases in the number of vehicles and above-CPI increases in cost per claim,&#8221; Delaney said. 
While the long-term outlook for autonomous vehicles shows potential growth, the Global X Autonomous &amp; Electric Vehicles ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DRIV#NASDAQ">DRIV</a>) has slipped 7% year-to-date, still reflecting some market skepticism.

The P/E ratio measures the current share price to the company's EPS. It is used by long-term investors to analyze the company's current performance against it's past earnings, historical data and aggregate market data for the industry or the indices, such as S&amp;P 500.
