Toy company Mattel Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAT#NASDAQ">MAT</a>) beat analyst estimates for<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/05/45209947/mattel-beats-q1-estimates-pauses-guidance-due-to-tariffs-plans-actions-to-mitigate-cost-impacts"> first-quarter revenue</a> and earnings per share Monday.
Attention now turns to the impact of President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs, with the company ready to raise prices ahead of Christmas.
What Happened: Mattel posted first-quarter revenue of $827 million, beating an analyst estimate of $786 million. The company reported a loss of 3 cents per share, beating an estimate of 10 cents per share, according to data from Benzinga Pro.
Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz called the quarter "strong" and said the company continued its "operational excellence."
"Our brands are thriving, our products and experiences stand out in the marketplace, and our balance sheet gives us resilience and flexibility to execute our strategy," Kreiz said.
The company said it will take action to offset incremental costs from tariffs, including diversifying its supply chain, improving product sourcing, and raising prices when necessary.
Mattel also paused full-year 2025 guidance given the "volatile macro-economic environment and evolving U.S. tariff landscape."

"We don't see that happening," he said.
Kreiz noted that portions of the toymaking process, such as design, development, product engineering and brand management, occur in America.
Mattel has been working on diversifying its global manufacturing for nearly 10 years to lower its dependence on China. Kreiz said in two years, no country will handle 25% or more of the company's sourcing, including China, which will represent around 540% at the end of 2025.
While Mattel aims to keep many of its prices under $20, the company will raise prices on many items to offset the rising prices.
"To continue to create a quality product and find the balance of price and value all in the service of the consumer," Kreiz added.
With the price increases, time will tell if Trump was right about Americans being willing to pay a few dollars more.

Based on individual risk preference, consider a protection band consisting of cash or Treasury bills or short-term tactical trades as well as short to medium term hedges and short term hedges. What To Know: Trump described the move as a symbol of &#8220;Law, Order, and Justice&#8221; in a post on Truth Social and suggested the prison would be significantly expanded and modernized to accommodate the most dangerous criminals.

Alcatraz operated as a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963 and housed notorious criminals like Al Capone and George &#8220;Machine Gun&#8221; Kelly. The prison was closed due to high operational costs, deteriorating infrastructure and logistical challenges. 
Everything, including food, fuel and water, had to be shipped by boat, making it nearly three times more expensive to run than other federal prisons. 
John Martini, an expert on Alcatraz history who served as a park ranger on the island, <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/alcatraz-trump-prison-reopen-reaction-20309745.php">told</a> the San Francisco Chronicle that it would be impossible to reopen the prison because the building is "totally inoperable," with no water or sewage, and electricity only in certain parts.
"If the discussion is to rebuild the prison building to hold people, I don't think that would be feasible," Martini said. "It would have to be torn down and rebuilt."

A rebuilt Alcatraz prison would also need security, communications and surveillance solutions from providers who specialize in public safety and correctional facilities like Axon Enterprise, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AXON#NASDAQ">AXON</a>) and Motorola Solutions, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSI#NYSE">MSI</a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;
Details of the plan to reopen Alcatraz remain unclear, including proposed costs or a timeline for expanding and opening the facility. However, the Bureau of Prisons, Justice Department, FBI and Homeland Security are expected to work on the project.

What Happened: Anysphere, the company behind the AI-powered code-writing assistant Cursor, has raised $900 million in new funding, tripling its valuation to $9 billion, Financial Times <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/a7b34d53-a844-4e69-a55c-b9dee9a97dd2">reported</a>.
This surge comes just months after FTX creditors offloaded their equity interest in Anysphere for only $200,000, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The massive valuation jump underlines just how costly distressed asset sales can be — and how rapidly AI start-ups are inflating in value. 
The new round was led by Thrive Capital, a backer of OpenAI, with participation from Andreessen Horowitz and Accel, according to people close to the deal.
Founded in 2022 by MIT alumni, Anysphere was last valued at $2.5 billion in January, when it raised $105 million from many of the same investors. 
Its flagship product, Cursor, has become popular with software engineers for enabling natural language-based coding and suggesting near-complete code blocks, often replacing manual development work.
